I'm okay with the single rumor being false. If it was true I thought it was coming out a bit too soon. I think the rumor was that it was gonna be out by June. Namie already had Checkmate coming out and Fight Together. One top of that she still had her tour coming up. I just thought June was a bit too soon.

Checkmate!'s so gonna break 300k. so amazing Namie <3

I still really wonder what her "secret" was to her comeback in the PLAY/BEST FICTION era... does anyone know?

bondingo 5th May 2011 12:54 PM

^ Honestly there wasn't one. If you've been following Namie for awhile, it's pretty clear that her style has been preeeety much the same since STYLE, but I just think it took a little while to catch on with the Japanese public. Queen of Hip-Pop sold almost as well as PLAY though, so I feel like it's been more of a steady rise than a sudden boom with PLAY. STYLE was undoubtedly less mainstream than any of her albums if you ask me, so I can see why it didn't sell too well, especially since her popularity went really downhill after marrying and giving birth. I think after that though, the style became more mainstream and pop than straight out R&B or whatever you'd call the SUITE CHIC style.

interesting.. man, I thought of using Namie as an example of a "brand" that has "died" and managed to have a "comeback"... but it appears that she has not.. ahhh

Celaphorce 5th May 2011 01:53 PM

^Her career never really died so to speak, it just came to a halt for a moment, and the hiatus def. didn't help, then again they never really do, but she managed to pick herself up from it.

yeah I'm kinda being liberal in using "dead" and "hiatus" but I'm kinda bumped now... eck I thought if I could find out what made BEST FICTION sell a million copies, I could apply the same theory on my project... :laugh

She was actually really unpopular with the more traditional of the Japanese public for a while. This was years ago, in about..2002-2006? I even think it's mentioned on Wiki. She'd got divorced and was now a single mother, and was kind of given a vague label of a bad role model.

Here's a quote from what Namie said about it at the time:

"Amuro explained that while she wished to regain popularity, she did not want to "force" herself on the public anymore."

And also, here's an article on her rise of popularity again. Clicky here for article!

Her music style may not have changed, but her image and how she was viewed by the general public certaintly did. It's admirable that she made such a comeback, in that way.

Namie has gone through alot and she's still in the top

I guess so...but I also think the strength and her will to continue played a huge part. Her releases following..were like, nothing happened, that "Namie Amuro" the singer hadn't changed. It's quite amazing.

sugarbasil 5th May 2011 06:26 PM

That article you posted, Kou...is phenomenal. :tired I've always liked Namie's music, but I've never followed her religiously; and I had absolutely no idea of her childhood or all the stuff with her mother being murdered or any of that. O_O I have so much respect for her right now. Wow, what an amazing, strong-willed person. :yes

kayokyokufan 6th May 2011 01:50 AM

Even years after reading this article it's still amazing. It's mind boggling to think of all the things Namie has been through.

I finally received my copy of Checkmate CD+DVD in the mail today! I'm really pleased with the album overall and am happy I decided to purchase it. The only songs I would skip over are Wet N'Wild and FAKE but other than that, I felt that this was a really well rounded release. And congrats to her for her high sales and having a tight hold on the #1spot on Oricon! I'm so proud of her!

adantatu2 6th May 2011 04:50 AM

Picaflor 7/4 6th May 2011 06:19 AM

Really amazing sales!!!
I didn't think a collaboration album would sell that much especially after the earthquake...

I am happy for Namie, but kind of sad for Kumi, because she is falling down in sells=(
