^ Yeah, its interesting because I ran into a few of those comments too. That people feel the lyrics are a turn off because it doesn't suit her age.

ayumisrael 14th August 2009 08:28 AM

So it's forbidden for her to do so because of the cultural taboo and it makes some of them feel uneasy about it?

Kaiouforever 14th August 2009 08:33 AM

I think people are just surprised, because her summer songs are usually very popular. But, to be honest, sales don't really matter. She still has #1 ranking, and I love the songs, so it's all good.

It's not really linked to a cultural problem. I mean, she's not a little girl anymore.... And she has to adapt her vocabulary to her age ... right ?

SunshineSlayer 14th August 2009 08:36 AM

^ The translation into English sounds totally fine. But I suppose in Japanese there are nuances and words that make it sound like a teenager is singing it and in extremely age conscious Japan I guess that's a turn off for some people.

Not really, ayu admits herself that she feels younger in her mind so just because she is not a teenager anymore doesn't mean she has to write the lyrics with the right words for her age, she also can write lyrics from the point of view of younger ages.
I agree that a lot would expect her to write the lyrics with words that fits her age though.

A drama producer even wanted Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~ for his drama (which means the lyrics can't be bad or else he wouldn't do it to his drama, even if it's not a high rating one).

I have the same opinion but for eg, she uses "otomegokoro" (in english translated as "girl's feeling") but in fact the use of "otome" means "young girl / virgin" so it's a bit too much xD

She also used otome in Days and it was a good hit and was really liked by the public. XD
At least way more than Sunrise (unless if it can go platinum digitally).

keikeiaznqueen 14th August 2009 08:53 AM

^ Haha, yeah, although perhaps her lyrics were the way they were because she wrote them with the drama in mind? Since it's a drama with young people and one older man right. I think people who are uneasy with the way her lyrics don't match her age have been uneasy for a long time and probably won't stop being uneasy.

Oh yes you're right ! But maybe it fitted more the single concept (regarding to the covers, Days' ones were pretty "innoncent") so it was okay..
Well... I don't really know xD

octolina 14th August 2009 09:35 AM

^ oh hey guys sorry to butt in to your convo, but are most of her songs considered otomegokoro? because sometimes, I find her songs somewhat masculine, not in the "love me I'm a girl" but kind of "I'll protect you". and she uses boku which i know doesn't mean much but it gives a boyish feeling... I LOVE IT. she is my girl crush :)

Ayumiko 14th August 2009 09:40 AM

^omg your sig...XD...he is indeed a diva

Yagami Raito: that's interesting. I wonder which ayu summer songs they like.

njanjayrp 14th August 2009 09:41 AM

People don't have to like the song, I wouldn't mind if Ayu was to go all rock and serious, drop the whole poppish thingy and make some GUILTY music in the future.

And just to remind you that the single has entered it's 4th week on Recochoku and that it's still in top5 of all categories, even top 3 or #1 in some and that tells a lot how well received the songs and the PVs are. The single might simply not be an eye candy for buyers (and it's really not). If we're already looking for the reason of sales lower than the previous ones.

@Octolina - that sig is extremely funny lol

Ayumiko 14th August 2009 09:54 AM

I would like to see ayu do more cool songs like rule and sparkle...such a great single...and for ballads, I want more depressing dramatic ones.

Nowdays, the use of "boku" by a girl meens nothing. I mean except some most of the girls I know use "boku" and not "atashi" or "watashi". Maybe since the late 90's it's like this.
But in the case of the use of "atashi" it gives a more "fragile" feeling.
Anyway the use of "boku" doesn't give a masculine form to Ayu's lyrics but a stronger feeling.

I haven't really asked but Greatful days, July 1st and Blue Bird seems to be quiet popular. But I can't assure it ^^'

Yeah, it seems she had parent-child love in mind while writing the lyrics. And she said that the younger female audience will probably relate more to "Sunset". So maybe she used "words that don't fit her age" on purpose. The tie-in songs like "Sunrise", "HEAVEN" and "fated" seem to be mostly the thoughts and emotions she gets from reading the script or watching the movie, maybe mixed with her own personal experiences.

Yeah so exactly what I mean. I already know it doesn't mean much if a girl uses boku nowadays but it does in fact remind me of male speech. Also, although I believe you when you say most J girls you know use "boku", of all the J girls I've met and befriended, atashi and watashi have been most common, atashi being used exclusively in informal situations. Perhaps they prefer a more feminine tone to their speech? :D

:cigsmile

Aha ^^'' Sorry for the grammar error ! I've just edited it.
I don't really know what J poeple would prefere about Ayu. Well.... if she uses "ore" it would be relly strange and not appreciated I think xD
Anyway I think there's no problem about the "masculine / feminine" tone of Ayu's lyrics. Only about some words that doesn't reflect the whole single (cover/PV/tune) (and afterwards Ayu's age.. ).
