Especially considering physical CDs don't sell that much anymore.

- Highest selling album (First Love, 7.6 million copies at least)
- Highest first day selling album (Distance, with over 1.5 million copies)
- Highest first week (Distance, 3 million copies)

It will be really hard to break those records...

Don't forget she has 3 albums among the top 10 best selling j-pop albums of all time xD

@ bluegie: thank you. yes that documentary sort of showed it. haha. i wouldve been the confused ayuhikki fan. i wouldntve been that excited. First Love album is so overrated and generic to me (like whats mainstream now). and then im not into buying best albums a lot lol. XD interesting period though. lots of hype huh?

^__^ and about boku wa kuma. i dont mean to cal anyone a kid (trust me. im quite childish myself a lot). its just. Take 5 was like the best song and most poetic song on that album to me. and then we get light and shallow Boku wa kuma lol. i think Take 5 fits in better with Ultra Blue. is has that deep dark surrealness about it. that HS as an overall album lacks. its simple and easy to get in comparison. :)

Niji-iro basu was good though haha.

The type of music in First Love was one of the reasons why it was sold that much in Japan. Back then there were hip hop/rap/R&B in Japan, but those were not really considered as mainstream music. Hikki was the person who make the R&B-pop blossomed in the mainstream.

But I'm glad that hikki has more dynamic in her music. From R&B (First Love, Distance) to colorful arrangements (DEEP RIVER) to synthetic soundings (UB and HS). I'm waiting for another transition form her :D.

Well... yeah but the chance of another 3 million+ album is not that slim :), as there may be a new artist who can create a new miracle.

omably 15th April 2010 02:13 PM

urghhh, haven't been here for like half a year and still nothing.. haha

^that would be a magnificent miracle. i would hope it would actually be good though (for me). and unique ^__^

but that seems like theres just no chance :)

Keiichi_JPU 16th April 2010 01:24 AM

I'm craving for Hikki so much I might be over-analyzing things.
I have this theory that Hotel Lobby is about prostitution. Let me explain it using the lyrics.

Spoiler:
The world is full of money
She goes out unprotected
She doesn't listen to her best friend
It's only for the money

It's about a woman who needs money, but earns it in a risky way.

She doesn't want to be respected
In the city, the town and the household
So many things go unreported
So many things her eyes have seen

Prostitution isn't the most respected profession, and she'd obviously keep it as a secret. And I bet prostitutes see many things most people don't have to see.

Meet me in the hotel lobby
Everybody's looking lonely

Hotels are quite a common place for prostitutes to meet men, and those men are probably quite lonely.

I might be completely wrong, but it's interesting to think about right! :) I've been listening to Exodus a lot lately, and Hotel Lobby is one of my favorite songs so I've always wondered what it's about..

(I'll look like such a perv when this is proven wrong)

JackieRos 16th April 2010 01:34 AM

^when my uncle first heard Hotel Lobby he said the same thing and
I do think is about prostitution in a Brothel

visionfactory 16th April 2010 01:35 AM

^
^ Your theory makes sense ^_^

NintendoHTF1242 16th April 2010 01:40 AM

Um I knew it was about prostitution right as I heard it. Don't really need a deep mind to figure that out haha.

Crystal_Ageha 16th April 2010 02:03 AM

Yeah, I thought the prostitution thing was obvious.... Not to be a smart-ass, but she basically said everything except for 'HEY THIS SONG'S ABOUT A *****!!' hah. It's one of the reasons I love that song, actually. I mean, Hikki singing about prostitutes..? Awesome. :cool

ahtka-chan 16th April 2010 02:11 AM

Yeah, Utada confirmed in a interview that the song talks about a prostitute :) She said It was fun to write a song like this because in her Japanese carreer she could never do something like that

Picaflor 7/4 16th April 2010 02:23 AM

"All through high school I lived in hotels, and for me hotels came to represent false appearances and isolation. In 'Hotel Lobby', I tell a story about a prostitute. When I became famous, I felt so overprotected and pampered and fussed about all the time that I fantasised about being unprotected, like the girl in the song. I used to feel lost in a strange lifestyle that I couldn't escape from. So I can relate to this character, even though we have different lifestyles." --Utada Hikaru

JackieRos 16th April 2010 03:14 AM

I never seen and interview of hikki before after 10 years listening to her:laugh
I'm a bad fan yeah not

Picaflor 7/4 16th April 2010 03:17 AM

^you're not missing anything. they're all exactly the same.

"So you speak 2 languages? what's that like for you?"
"Tell me about how you used to live between New York and Japan as a child."
"How do you pronounce your name?"
"Who is kuma chang?"
"Tell me a bit about this new album/song/single."

over, and over, and over, and over. she gets asked the same questions all the time. I will strangle the next person that asks about how her life was living between america and japan as a child. which reminds me. a while ago, she had an english interview, and a few fans called in to ask her questions. they were the most ludicrous!!! you can ask her anything you want, and you come up with these questions? "Can you tour in wisconsin?" (next person) "Can you tour in Los Angeles?" (next person) "What album is hikari on?" (next person) "Can you sing simple & clean for me? right now, on the radio? with an acoustic guitar?" (next person) "will you marry me?".

trust me jackie, you are not missing a thing by not listening to interviews. but i will say, she did comment on ayumi hamasaki once during a radio interview, which was really cool. but i think it was completely inappropriate to ask. the girl was like "um yea, i like your new english album, btw can you ask ayumi hamasaki to come to america?" i mean really? that's like kanye saying "taylor swift, your music is good and all but the real winner should have been beyonce."

gallowsCalibrator 16th April 2010 03:37 AM

^ Lol, those are hilarious questions! Seriously, that's all they could think of, to say to Utada?! :laugh

jean-baptiste 16th April 2010 03:39 AM

sorry to be random but is it 3 or 4 albums in the top 10 japanese albums of all time?

i always thought it was First Love, Distance, DEEP RIVER and Single Collection Vol.1. am i wrong?

@Picaflor: holy crap that last sentence had me dying! xD but that's soo true though.

Polyrhythm 16th April 2010 04:02 AM

Single Collection Vol.1. is the 35th highest selling album in Japanese music history.

First Love is #1
Distance #4
DEEP RIVER #8

jean-baptiste 16th April 2010 05:17 AM

^ooh i see. thanks for explaining. (don't know why the hell i thought Single Collection was up there. o_0)
