Like... it's something you expect to hear/see in the 60s or 70s old drama, such as her harmony in the end of the song. And the pv actually boosts that sense to me. (e.g., the phoenix, the cranes, hikki wearing ancient asian clothing flying, etc.).

I didn't really like the song when it first came out cuz I thought it was too oldie, and the ending part wasn't finished in the radio version somehow (her harmony disappeared, only background harmony presented). Once the video came out it totally change my feel to the song.

I will say it was one of the first Japanese songs and videos I heard and saw and when I did I thought, "Wow......this sounds simultaneously alien, foreign and as oriental as anything I'd expect out of Japan and so I thought EVERYTHING in Japan sounded like this. I didnt think there would be different genres or anything. I thought Japanese was a genre and "Sakura DROPS" WAS it and all there was.

And then when I saw the video, I was in ecstasy and thought Japan with all its technological prowess was just popping out and producing gems like this left and right. I was like this is nothing like what I've been subjected to all my life and thought every music video looked like this. All the while not knowing that it wasn't Japan responsible for the magic of this song and video, but Utada and (whatever that dude's name was that she cheated on) alone.

Also I would later discover that Japan too had artists, music and videos just as basic as the ones I had grown up with. I remember the first normal video I saw of some chick just walking down some sidewalk moving her lips to some song that could have very well been made for an American market. There was no magic at all. Grounded all in boring reality. I was devestated. Japan made these too? It was Namie Amuro.

mizuki-7 11th January 2013 01:59 PM

I like this song too ^^

Dragging Namie in Hikki's thread. Lol.

People say exodus doesn't sound like utada. I think only some songs could be sung by her, like kremlin dusk, devil inside and animato.

Minttulatte 11th January 2013 03:53 PM

Exodus sounds like Hikki to me. It's just that it takes a bit more experimental tone than before. I mean, DEEP RIVER was rather experimental but to me Exodus is probably the most experimental album in her discography. At first I didn't like the album too much but later I found so many gems from it that I really started to love it♥

I believe it sounds far more like her than First Love or Distance...

It still amazes me how many musical trends she foresaw on this album... quite a lot of stuff she done there hit the radios hard done by other people some years later.

You know... actually Sakura doroppusu was actually the very first "oriental" song from hikki. (Or that's the only one if you think Kairo doesn't sound "oriental"). Like I said I didn't like the song in the beginning because it sounded so not R&B at all. I was used to her R&B style from First Love to Distance. traveling and Hikari aren't really R&B but at least they sound modern, but Sakura sounded like a song for a 60's movie. (well actually Hikari sounds like something you'll sing on a grassland with lots of wild animals surrounding hikki :P).

Of course, in the end I think Sakura doroppusu as one of the signature songs and DEEP RIVER as her best album (I think I should stop right here or else we'll start another best album debate again).

I agree. Exodus is totally a DEEP RIVER pt. 2 (music wise), except it's in English and it's more experimental than DR.

SERIOUSLY. I can't wrap my mind around the fact that there's so many of who you don't like this song! :thud I fell in love with it the moment I heard it!

BlackSilence 14th January 2013 10:05 PM

lol Utada is totally not my kind of artists, but lets see what I have....
I love you
Sakura drops
Prissoner of Love (blame Last Friends)
This one (crying like a child)
First love

these are SONGS, that's all xD I actually like messy stuff when it's reasonably messy, so i really enjoyed Sakura Drops lol however, she's not that great, really xD

emi♡ 14th January 2013 11:07 PM

^I'm surprised you don't like her more rock tracks, like You Make Me Want to Be a Man, and Kremlin Dusk.

But oh. She IS that great. You know, it IS possible to believe someone is great, without liking their music. For example, I think GACKT has a lot of ****** music and ****** artwork, but I still think he's great and creative XD

NintendoHTF1242 15th January 2013 12:25 AM

^ That last part of your post, yes!

I cannot stand the group Train, but I can't deny that they are really creative.

And saying Utada isn't that great...Prepare yourself, artcika...Utada will find you.

And she will kettobase Artcika to dust!

bluegie 15th January 2013 07:55 AM

There aren't many non-hikki lovers coming to this thread, so it's quite fresh to read someone bashing hikki LOL.

CoriKaru 15th January 2013 08:11 AM

I realize after seeing all these mentions of Utada songs that I have spent enough time away from overplaying her music and I'm ready to return. I miss HEART STATION.

And Kairo. Oh my god.

I was showing some of my associates what Utada looked like because they were curious who my favorite Artist was and what she looked like. I showed them her Ultra Blue cover and one said "Now without all of the photoshop.".

I fired him.

I showed another videos of Utada in some of her music videos and she said Utada was Goofy and when she saw Utada pop up from beneath a desk with a big teddy bear on her head.........I realized I had made a mistake had been enveloped in Asian culture for far too long to remember how different America sensibilities are to Asians' because she just walked away and said she was done.

She then said Utada was pretty but just looked like a normal girl in some shots and not so prettty in others. So I followed her out to her car showed her more pictures and videos and dared her to denounce Utada's profound dazzling grace and beauty and when she wouldn't say what I wanted her too I put her on suspended leave. She doesn't know she's not really coming back though.

Some people just can't handle the great Japanese lozenge.
Like how some have a low tolerance for alcohol. Who knows hat kind of potent stuff utada put in those Sakura drops. It seems to work for most though

Minttulatte 15th January 2013 11:41 AM

I don't remember if I said it before, but to me there's no Hikki song that I don't like. I absolutely love all of them for different reasons. I can just say that her R&B songs always hit me so hard. ♥
