I just want the best for her and it hurts me kind of to see such a talented musician so low in the rankings, I mean rankings aren't everything for sure but you still want to see your faves do well right?

I loved Diamond Princess style, too. But I'm curious, what do you think was very unique about that album? I mean, I wasn't listening to Miliyah back when that album was released so I can't really compare it to anything else that was popular at the time (kind of forgot). To me that album (Diamond Princess) was very r'n'b, with some heavy pop undertones. I can't say that she has an album that's unique per se, but songs like Shounen Shoujo and Reisei to Jounetsu no Aida for example definitely are. She also has songs that are unique to her discography, but that aren't really unique "out there", if you get my point.

I understand caring about your favorite artist's sales and not wanting to see them sink. But I definitely don't want her talent to go to waste just so she can entertain a bigger pool of people. To be honest most of the things she releases is what most people would consider entertaining anyway. She really doesn't have that many songs that are as unique as Shounen Shoujo. I don't think that experimenting this rarely can sink her down. And besides, it gives you something fresh and inspired for a change.

I personally don't care too much (as long as it means she'll continue releasing music) about her "failing in public", because she succeeded with Shounen Shoujo in my eyes and that's far more important for me. Yeah, if she continues "failing" like that her career might stop, but in the end she doesn't really experiment that much for that to happen, in all honesty. I was very happy when she released SS, it actually made me think of her as more creative and caring towards her music, not the other way around. I mean, don't you think it's more disheartening for people to release music just for the sake of "the larger pool of people" loving them than for the sake of music? I mean, if you are on a big label like Miliyah is, you can't possibly stray too far from the mainstream. And btw it's not like SS is that far from being a mainstream song itself, lol. But yeah, it's something more different and I don't see anything bad about that.

Corvina 30th April 2015 10:04 AM

As I'm just following her loosely, I had to check, how her last releases sold.
And it's unfortunate and a bit shocking that it is so low. At least albums are still doing alright. And btw. she's doing better digitally anyway.

Personally I absolutely love Shounen Shoujo!
Great song, great single, even with visuals (and Miliyah is sometimes far off with those :laugh)
The singles before weren't my cup of tea.

It really is a matter of taste. Though I guess with those sales she's able to do, what she wants and at least she seems to be somehow stable.

Ryusei 30th April 2015 11:41 AM

^ the thing is she didn't do well on either with SS but yeah her physical single sales hardly matter for her it's just albums and digital single (song) sales

^^ what I think is unique about diamond princess is that some songs were very fun sounding which is not that common for miliyah if you ask me like last summer for example and the reggae-flair in songs like kono mama zutto asa made idk it's just not like any other album I have really listened to except maybe Che'Nelle's luv songs (also has some reggae-ish songs) and as you said the R&B was in there some pop some sampling which I love from her it was like all her good things coming together in one album maybe I'm just biased but I love that album. My fave album by her is TRUE LOVERS though because it was the first one I heard and there are no tracks that I don't like.

I don't want her to waste her talent either I'm just getting tired of this all ballads thing she's doing I get that she wants to write meaningful songs but Ballads aren't the only way to write a song with meaning. Idk I wish she tried something new like rock or smth her voice is definitely strong enough for that genre and I think it would suit her

ayu_ready? 30th April 2015 01:41 PM

Shounen Shoujo might not be for the Japanese taste and that's all

tenshi no hane 30th April 2015 02:57 PM

I only skimmed through the recent comments, but this might be interesting for y'all:

After releasing Loveland, she mentioned* that the album Heaven was her attempt at being as "sell-able" as possible. I.e. making songs she thought would be a hit with the general public. But she doesn't want to make music with such a mindset again. She makes the music she wants to make.

* I don't remember exactly which interview. I think in ViVi during Loveland era.

Utena 30th April 2015 06:41 PM

It's quite interesting considering HEAVEN often is a fan favorite. I think it's my favorite as well, but I must say I really liked all of the album she released after HEAVEN as well.. Ring as well. Well to be honest I love them all for different reasons.

Thanks for answering. What you say about Diamond Princess is interesting, and to be honest I'm glad that there is someone out there who likes it as much as I do! The funny thing is that TRUE LOVERS is also my favorite album by her (was also the first one and there's also no tracks I don't like).

And yeah, I guess I can understand that one would get bored of ballads seeing as she really did release a lot of singles that were ballads this and last year, which is why I said I wouldn't mind an upbeat song.

@ tenshi no hane

Thanks for sharing that. I had no idea. I never understood why so many people absolutely loved HEAVEN seeing as it's one of my least favorite albums by her. But it's still a great album; don't get me wrong. I actually loved everything before HEAVEN a lot more than HEAVEN itself, TRUE LOVERS being my favorite and LOVELAND being a really great album but thematically did not leave as great impression as TL for me.

I think you are not so much into Miliyah then. i think her live performances are among the best in Japan, even on par with Koda Kumi (Miliyahs voice is better than Kumis, its less nasaly and she does not have the engrish problem). Miliyah is much more feeling it than just performing, but you have to like her music from start to finish and her weird emo persona to enjoy her fully.

I don't know if your post was directed at anyone in particular, but it kinda bugged me. You can't tell someone how into Miliyah they are based on one post. I, personally, consider her one of my favorite artists. Even if I criticize an aspect of her, it doesn't make me less of a fan. And if I may also let my Kuu-stan out, you also can't tell me Miliyah's voice is better. That's just an opinion. Maybe you meant it as such, but it comes off rude to me.

She doesn't want to make music like from HEAVEN no wonder I gave up on this bitch after that release LOL

My apologies. It's a bad habit of mine. I refer to all my pop stars as bitches. But yeah... I'll try to refrain myself from doing so lol.

Not exactly news I was expecting, but hey! Miliyah announced a remix album, Kato Miliyah M-Mix ~Mastermix Vol.1 I'm really hoping for new material soon aside from the Piece of Cake theme song.

I wonder if it'll be all new remixes, or old remixes from previous releases throughout her 10 years.
