The arrangement is definitely not all that impressive or original IMO.
It's just the fact of Ayu's vocals...and her rapping. They all just blew my mind!
The song wouldn't be as good if it weren't for her,
though I do agree they could've done more with it.
It's also nice to hear Ayu rap again c:.

The rest of the album though. It really is WOW lmao :luv2

I like the song. Not my favorite but I probably wouldn't skip it. This is the closest I've came to liking anything from m-flo in a long time.

jbrat2219 27th March 2014 04:31 AM

I really like the song. I disagree that it needs a better arrangement. I think this arrangement really showcases her voice because there's not a lot going on. I know it probably won't, but I hope it makes it on her album. Because I'm not buying theirs. :laugh

Just to clear this up. I know you guys aren't that familiar with m-flo, but stop referring to m-flo as a rapper, lol... The rapper is VERBAL. The producer/trackmaker is Taku Takahashi. The DUO is m-flo. m-flo doesn't rap. VERBAL does.

Okay, now that that's out of the way! XD

On the official m-flo website there are self liner notes from Taku Takahashi about the making of each track, so I translated what he said about "My way."

We got the idea "Wouldn't it be cool to have ayu rap on top of a trap beat?" so we figured we'd go to her with the offer, since we had nothing to lose by doing so, and she happily accepted. Maybe it's because it was her first time rapping, but she kept asking "Is this okay?" so I was concerned, but her intonation & attitude when delivering the lyrics was magnificent.

When she lowered the pitch of her voice for the chopped & screwed part, even then her voice was so cool. So I'd personally like to hear her rap more from now on, I think. On the track, I felt like something was missing in the first version, so I swapped the kick & snare with sounds I'd put into an E4 sampler. What I'd done was sample these crunchy "bachi--!" and "bari--!" sounds from records. Lately I've felt through every part of me that maybe it's still incomplete. But even now, I just surrender to the sound when using samples, just as I did before. I always feel like correcting things when I'm mixing it all together. Besides, I think stuff like the piano samples are really effective, aren't they?

Don't know if it was already posted, but:

I like how some of y'all calling this unoriginal and boring lol please. This shit is fucking flawless. Ayu sounds so damn beautiful, VERBAL on that crunk shit, and Taku killing me with the production work. Sorry it's not another Pray???

Ayu, more songs like this on the next album kthx

I'm honestly so down for that.

I could get so turnt to this song. Ugh, it's so great.

Delirium-Zer0 27th March 2014 04:52 PM

It really is good. I mean if you're not into the genre I can see how, cuz it's mid-tempo and kinda chill, you wouldn't immediately get pulled in by it, but it's so well done.

I can't talk about it more though cuz my podcast is reviewing the album this afternoon and I have to keep it inside my brain XD

njanjayrp 27th March 2014 05:14 PM

I think the song is oke. I like it. I am not really a fan of rap music in general. It's different for sure, but personally I would always go with Pray :P Though Merry-go-round was epic and I wouldn't say no to another couple of songs like that on the album.

owlflight 27th March 2014 05:43 PM

I'm not a big fan of this genre of music but Ayu sounds superb in this song. Will buy the track from iTunes as soon as I can.

amen preach hallelujah

ayumisrael 28th March 2014 01:20 AM

I'm down for that too, but I'm sure that ayu with her touch can make even stronger songs.

Btw for who's interested and mixed about tagging the songs on iTunes/for last.fm.

I tag it: m-floMy Way / m-flo + ayumi hamasaki

As m-flo's song. The track name is the official.

Btw, it's a shame they didn't make a PV for that song. ayu would probably look so cool!

The production isn't dated enough for Ayu's core fanbase. It's weird hearing Ayu with actual decent production and programming.

The production awfully reminds me of sweetbox's Jade album from 2002...

Yeah the production on this most certainly isn't at the forefront of entertainment. It's absurdly stale.

ExodusUK 28th March 2014 06:02 PM

If it is 2003 then it's still ahead of the dated musicians and production Ayu uses.

Just heard it today. Funnily enough I've just recently gotten into trap and chill-out so I was surprised to hear this style and then wasn't that surprised I enjoyed it a lot. Yes sure the the arrangement can come across as too simple and boring for it's lack of a climax at first but I loveee it cause it's just soo chill. The way the arrangement is kinda slow and "dragging" in a good way makes it pure bliss. There's actually a lot going on with the arrangement. Plus I love that fat bass. Who cares about the lack of a climax when the whole song is like making sweet lazy love lol. First I cringed at the Miley Cyrus-y "Imma do it my way"s but her vocals are so smooth and soothing and perfect otherwise. Her actual rap part is actually quite nice and I like her breathiness, especially where she goes mou furimawasarena-iiiiihhhhhh :heart

Mhmm mhmm. I find that my opinion fits well with yours. I agree about loving how chill it is and the lack of a climax.

I think this kind of arrangement is perfect.

marty 28th March 2014 11:58 PM

It doesn't sound very Ayu-ish, but I think that's because it's not hers.
It's a m-flo's track, she's just featuring. The rap part in Merry-go-round instead flows perfectly with Ayu style!

I don't know if I'd say it's THAT bad. :laugh As much as I love and adore sweetbox, most of the time their music doesn't even sound MIXED. Though, Jade is actually probably their best album in that respect.

Anyway. The song isn't as bad as the preview made it sound, but I really don't find it particularly fresh or original either. :shrug For Ayu, sure, but she's just the featured artist. For music in general? No...

I think it's okay. I kind of like it, but then I don't want her to do this style ever again. (Yes, I realize she's just a featured artist on m-flo's track, etc. etc.)

I can't help but think of Usher every time I see the title lol
