I've always been curious about her fragrances, but basically all the reviews I saw tells that is either very sweet or very "old lady"-ish, is it true (for those who have tried them)? Not that I would use them, just curiosity. Maybe Eternaluxe is better? Idk.

Always good to see Kumi on television. I guess I'm odd, but I enjoy Watch Out more than Haircut. I'm pretty satisfied with the promotion thus far. A solid anime tie in, nice Shibuya promo and some television. I can't really complain. It's nice to see Rhythm Zone still standing firmly behind their First Lady.

I don't like the song and would have prefered a different song to perform, but it helped pushing the album on amazon.jp.
Plus some Japanese fans already made a catch phrase out of it - ワォチャー. :laugh
Same reason Japanese loved Lollipop - to most of you guys her Japanese pronounciation of the full English chorus was horrendous, for the Japanese it was fun.

It's nice that the appearance helped boost the album on Amazon. I don't really keep up with that as much, but I'm not surprised. Comments on Twitter were mostly positive. A lot of people appreciate her dancing and energy.

Given the climate for soloists in Japan and the current state of the industry there, I'm grateful that Koda still has firm support from Rhythm Zone. Avex is not doing well, that is a reality. The fact that they are still willing to invest in Koda, and do right by her is something we should be grateful for.

Let me be clear. I and others aren't saying you can't have honest critique or debate, but at the same time have some awareness of the alternative. If she gave you nothing, many of you would be trying to surround the avex building with pitchforks demanding answers.

I'm just happy that she's trying and still making the effort to give us something. No shade, but at least we're not being taken for granted.

To be honest I also feel the same with Ayu's new album. It may only be 5 tracks with no PVs, but I'm happy that we got anything from a woman who said she was basically starting to go completely deaf at the beginning of the year. I worry more about her health than getting a full album.

With her health issues and everything else, I get it. Trouble was probably the best she could do, given her situation.

It's ok to criticise and not to like every single thing Kuu put out but when people's choice of words used are insensitive if not hurtful , then that's a different matter

The music scene in Japan now is very different as compared to a decade ago . Male and female solo acts can't sell physical releases in Japan but the very lucky few are still able to sell out concerts which's now their main source of income , aside from selling their music digitally + concert goods

Anyway to stop myself from writing a long essay , I respect Kuu cos she work hard to get to where she's at now . I thought for her to release 2 albums last year was wild & for her to do it again this year , it's even woah

I don't like everything from both W FACE albums and also AND . I think that will apply to DNA as well but at least Kuu tried her best

Also on a side note , based on the DVD/Blu-ray tracklist , the DNA album track PVs should be watched in this sequence ?

Random, but I had forgotten how strong Kumi's debut album was. affection is one of the strongest debuts from an avex soloist. Crazy to think they seriously considered terminating her contract.

The first of the 4 PV specials for the album on TV is also airing on Friday, a day before bpm. Maybe they air one of the other new PVs in full?

For those wondering why she mentions Ayu in the preview...the host (a guy from EXILE btw.) apparently asked her something about her and she says here, that Ayu is also like that and if she does it she doesn't win.

Oh, it's a long story. Rhythm Zone wasn't satisfied with Kumi or her chart performance. By the end of 2002, there were rumors avex was going to drop her. Never any confirmation, but Max most likely stepped in and saved her at the last minute. real Emotion/1000 no Kotaba was probably her last chance and thankfully turned out to be a platinum single and helped her 2nd album become successful.

@ Corvina, I can't get into her 2nd album. Maybe it's because avex didn't let her write as much.

Idk if it was Max, cause wasn't he the one telling her before or right after her debut, that she'd be too fat and ugly to be in her own PVs?
To fill in the whole story:
After the success of real emotion/1000 no Kotoba the singles and the album after didn't meet expectations again, even though Kuu worked as hard for it (and e.g. performed in lots of clubs). Though she also stated later she needed time to find her own style in music and visuals and that lacked in her first three years, cause she didn't really know back then, who she is or wanted to be. That just started to slowly change in 2003 with her first steps into ero-kakkoii. And with the full change in 2004 she got big. I guess it was Koda Reki where she said, that people probably felt that she wasn't sure about herself before.

Her 2nd album is just such a well-produced body of work to me. So poppy and catchy with an urban tinge. She worked with Lisa and Blistah for the first time and it really set the tone of her coming direction. I really think it helped her finding herself in her career. Which is why I don't mind that much that she wasn't so involved - she probably learned a lot through it (hence also the theme of the album).

You are 100% correct, by saying Kumi didn't have a clear vision of herself or career. To be fair, she was a young girl fresh out of high school signed to the most famous label in Japan. There was some personal growth that needed to happen and ultimately she figured out her own style/brand.

I should probably clarify my feelings on grow into one. As an album it's fine and her involvement with Lisa and Blistah, was indeed a match made in heaven. She probably wouldn't have made the excellent feel my mind, without the experience of 2000 to 2003. That said, I just get annoyed that she wasn't allowed as much input despite her lyrical skill on the 2nd album.

Out of her first albums I prefer affection over grow into one, it feels just more solid even tho her singing technique wasn't polished. But feel my mind for sure wins against both affection and grow into one, you can feel she just clicked with her stage persona during that era and everything worked well together. I feel like affection got personality, grow into one got the technique/production and feel my mind got all of it.

I used to dislike grow into one, but lately I've been listening a lot and enjoying it. I feel like affection didn't age as good as grow into one.

grow into one was also one of my first J-Pop CDs ever, in my case I got it along with affection. Lucky for me, back in 2003 my dad and his friends used to go to Japan quite often for business, so after I got obsessed with real Emotion I asked him to get me affection & grow into one albums. I played affection first then grow into one. I love both but grow into one is still one of my top fav albums from her. It's just amazing. I'm still waiting for her to perform One night romance one day. Honestly, I'm surprised that she TAKE BACK wasn't a hit, this song is awesome.

It is a word, but freeze is more likely, cause she's asking if you're feeling a freezing feeling with your body. She could mean the meaning of cloth here, but I doubt it.
PARTY also had spelling mistakes, even though Kuu pronounced everything correctly in the song.

She explains that Pin Drop means a silence, where you can even hear a pin falling down. It's a performance song.

Frieze is an extremely obscure word. I’d say the majority of English speakers would not even know it exists... So I have a hard time believing it was used as some sort of double meaning... I’m going to assume it’s a stylistic choice more than anything.

I just actually read all of this and I'm SO glad there are longer songs than in AND. already sad that HOT HOT is short tho.

Watch Out is at least tolerable in high quality. Some edgy elements were added here and there, I am actually loving the bridge part before the final chorus. I don't think Haircut would be this powerful live.. It is certainly Kenji's most experimental track to date :laugh

The choreography in that live there was...hoo boy...that was something. Just messy, sloppy, nonsense. Kuu is such a great performer, but you can only do so much with the material.

Maybe I'm being harsh, but I haven't really enjoyed one of Kuu's albums for a long time now. She's continuing in a direction that I just don't understand. :(

haha not at all. all of those songs have been tough for me as well. actually, kuu has quite a handful of things that i just can't get into/don't enjoy/understand. it's always been that way. but i'm not a fair weather fan, so i keep coming back every time to see what else she has going on. in the last couple of years i've just found less material i enjoy, and a greater dislike on the tracks that i don't like.


this thread made me go back and pop in grow into one, which i also never really got into. it's way better than i remember it being.

When AND bounced back in weekly sales with over 2k it was because of the 2nd batch of FC versions being shipped out.
As long as there is a version of a release of the same name released through normal retailers, special versions are counted.

@Corvina, does that mean that the total sales for AND are incomplete then? I didn't think the first batch of fan club versions counted when the album first entered the album chart.
