The vocals are really good! It's just weird having both background vocalists when they are clearly not singing (she's singing with the original mix instrumentals that have her own voice as background).

I was trying to figure out how can she look so different in a matter of just a few days (between FNS and a-nation). To me, she looks much more natural, refreshed and younger during a-nation.

And then I realised her make up during a-nation is waaaay gentler than FNS.
No over-contouring of her nose, her eye make-up seems lighter and i think even her eyebrows are less dark.

This suits here wayyyy better imo! Also the bangs helped :D

her voice felt like it got stronger than it had been in 夏ノトラブル, so much that she was able to shout during Startin'. the stress from the screaming was carried over to subsequent songs, but overall she managed to sound great! :luv2 Dreamed a Dream, especially, was perfect.

I hope Queen could fully un-learn the screamy technique so her future live voice could sound better and more stable.

Watching the performance I didn't notice anything suspicious, it didn't look like she was lipsynching to me. In some performances you could hear that her voice was a little thin, like SEASONS chorus. She also didn't move that much, so it seems like she was very focused on her voice.

Started listening. I won't believe that Dreamed a Dream was live, Ayu's pitch is NEVER that good if it's just one take. Thank god for not shouting in Vogue, very surprising. Enjoying the background vocals that her back-up singers contributed. Hearing Glitter is really nostalgic.

if you watch the performance, it's clear that it was live.

she has become SO BAD at lip-syncing the past couple of years that whenever she does it, the camera would avoid zooming in on her face as much as possible (just compare with the faraway angles of e.g. kanariya in Just the beginning -20- CDL, identity in Promised Land CDL). in this performance, the camera doesn't shy away from zooming in at all.

I think in recent years it's just been really loud heavy backing tracks for songs she would have normally fully lipped in the past, she even does it with songs that she sings fully nowadays too during choruses and stuff. Typically too with songs that she does use it heavily for there is a lot going on so there isn't as much reason to zoom in imo.

that makes sense, I should've phrased it more clearly. what I meant is that when she does lip-sync in recent years, the camera appears to purposefully avoid showing her 'singing'.

by the way I'm watching the a-nation performance as we speak and I've just reached SEASONS. I got the audio rip yesterday but I just got the video now and I have a lot of feelings about this trilogy. bullet points review incoming.

Her vocals here were so good. I was really surprised. She already sounded really good during her FNS performance so I was keen to hear what she sounded like here. I was definitely surprised. Obviously not a fan of the fake crying lmao but whatever it's a given at this point. I actually like that she lowered the key, cause that way she could sing comfortably and prettily instead of screaming through it.

Yeah, I will watch. I don't necessarily think it was lip-synced, it's not impossible that they used pre-recorded footage consisting of several takes, nobody would find out anyway, so why not. Overall this set sounds suspicious AF, because Ayu normally doesn't do this good live.

She sounded like this at FNS. Also, this years CDL was not bad.

She had the exact same kind of vocal going on in Dreamed a Dream for FNS and this. She went slightly 'cutesy' but it was clearly vocally controlled. It was live like much of the other performances broadcast from Japan with comments from mu-mo Live showing for many artists if they chose to focus on them.

I think she was very much focused on her voice compared to Natsu no Trouble, maybe doing some work on her vocals in the time since then?

I find it laughable to suggest that ayu was lip syncing or secretly doing multiple takes as if she hasn’t been performing live for two decades.

in the end she's a professional who has had record of performing live really well in the past. she must have received regular coaching in order to adapt her singing technique to her Deafness. in addition, the few months of lockdown has given her voice the necessary rest she'd desperately needed after 56 years of non-stop TROUBLE tour.

I know ayu loves performing but I really wish she wouldn't tour so extensively. Resting her voice during the pandemic has been a wonder for her, I enjoyed both the fns and a-nation performances, a-nation especially. She was great! Bit shouty during the summer songs section but she'd been on for 45 mins by then so understandable lol

I think that the extensive touring is sort of her rebellion against the 'inevitable' with the deafness. When we got word of the increased danger for her working ear in 2017 or so, we thought she might stop but since then she has been touring MORE than ever before! Might be that she feels it's a race against the clock and she wants to let as many people see her lives as possible.

Or avex is trying to milk as much from her when they can. I totally believe this increase in touring and decrease in music has to do with avex going where the money is.
Thats why its been so great to finally get consistent new music from her!

I highly doubt that, it just doesn't make sense given the state of her career. If she didn't want to do it (AKA she was being forced to), then she wouldn't have done it. Especially not during her pregnancy. It's clear to me that this is what Ayu wants/wanted.

It's probably both.
Ayu is a successful senior artist (and she even owns quite a percentage of avex herself, doesn't she?), so she enjoys privileges.
But she also is under contract and has to fulfil certain criteria.

FNS was pre-recorded, so it doesn't count as her usual live performance. CDL was mostly pretty good, yes.

This. I think its both too. Never said Ayu did not enjoy doing it. But doesn't mean Avex isn't pushing her to perform more and giving her less of a budget for music releases. If music sold more or as much as it did in the past, we would have had more albums believe me. Again, this does seem to have changed recently with all the new music. Just hypothesizing of course!

I'm pretty sure if she was eager to release music, we woudln't be getting so much generic ballads lately lol. Ayu feeds her music with her own personal issues... I wouldn't be surprised if after so much music released, she just had nothing new to share for a while.
