07-08 seems like a bad year... and 08 is just starting only....

Ok i think i'll be praying for her too whenever i go to temple

Zemus 4th January 2008 09:29 AM

Wow shocking and sad, must say I really admire Ayu a lot :O I'll try to pray for her best!

Aggar 4th January 2008 09:34 AM

after seeing that Ayu endured so many difficulties of her problems and still .. . I love her more than ever

Draggi 4th January 2008 09:37 AM

I'm really shocked...
and near to tears as well..
even now, when i think about her words to us during CDL 07~08 i could start crying..
i think you know what i mean...

But also i have to say that i think she should take a break...
this would be bette than anything else..
i want to hear her as long as i can, and so it would be great if she would celebrate her
10th Anniversary and afterwards take a break..
if she is holding an CDL again i will be there supporting her,
because i will be in japan this year.

Let's pray for her best

takamioda 4th January 2008 09:40 AM

poor our Dear Ayu!! why both Ayu's love & health are not good :shakehead

DestinyWishes 4th January 2008 09:43 AM

Oh my god... Poor Ayu, we should all look up to her and admire her. She never gives up for anything.

zeroshin888 4th January 2008 09:47 AM

I really admire Ayu's preserverence and positive attitude toward this. Honestly, her vocal qualities during lives may be becoming worse and worse due to the fact that only ONE ear functions properly.

Lee_Hamasaki 4th January 2008 09:48 AM

:((((((((((((((((((((((((( no words....

Cyria 4th January 2008 09:53 AM

This is very sad news. I have a lot of respect for her for still thinking of her fans and wanting to do her best.

qwerty 4th January 2008 09:55 AM

This is so surprising. :( I feel terrible for Ayu. I'm really glad that she's so strong through this whole thing; it's really inspiring. I just hope that her other ear works for the rest of her life.

Qt Mashi 4th January 2008 09:58 AM

this is very sad news, 2007 is the worst year for Ayu, she said she lost it since last year...i wonder when though...

sweetangel_293 4th January 2008 09:59 AM

i feel really sry for ayu and i'm also shocked who would've known avex needs to stop working her so hard but then again they won't be happy till she is completley deaf

Bad Wolf 4th January 2008 10:00 AM

Ayu, I love you. :( I know you'll never read this, but I feel so sorry for you and I'm really wishing for the best. This breaks my heart.

tenshi no hane 4th January 2008 10:09 AM

poor Ayu. She's being strong, but I hope she won't push it, especially with the Asia Tour 2008 coming up. (by the way she first had ear-problems during her Concert Tour 2000, it came back during her Dome Tour 2001)

LacusClyne 4th January 2008 10:10 AM

i bet her tickets in other countries will sell even faster now that she can't hear well

rikku411 4th January 2008 10:11 AM

This is like, extremely sad news for me right now :( and I literally started crying (I think listening to I am... while reading this didn't help).

I definitely respect and admire her soo much more now, and as much I would love to hear more Ayu, I don't want her to keep releasing stuff at the expense of her health like this.

I feel ashamed almost, because since I was a new Ayu fan (since Dec 2006) I wanted her to keep releasing stuff... I didn't want to catch her at the end of her career, but I definitely agree now that she should take a break, or at least slow down.

I hope she'll make the right choice, and that Avex will work with her as well, and that she's seeking the right medical attention.

I hope she doesn't go crazy trying to release stuff as much as possible thinking she needs to please us, her fans... possibly making her other ear bad/worse.

It must be really hard for her now... and I wonder when exactly she lost it?

But I wish her all the best, like really, she's in my prayers... I hope this year really looks up for her.

We're with you (just like you said you were with us), always.

AyuHamasaki01 4th January 2008 10:23 AM

Wow, indeed shocking!
I hope she can go on being a singer for a long time and we should all support Ayu as good as possible!!!

Jwiz 4th January 2008 10:24 AM

Sad and hate to see ayu ended up in this state.

part of me wants japan to know this shocking news..showing them how much ayu had gone through and the tremendous efforts that she had put in.

Aga-chan 4th January 2008 10:30 AM

ayu is purely... awesome. I'm quite speechless. She really should slow down. Specially when it comes to concerts.

alternarist 4th January 2008 10:30 AM

OMFG!!!! I NEARLY SPAT OUT THE WATER I JUS DRANK... i am still in the state of shock.. i cannot believe this. i thought ayu has always taken care of her ear by putting on ear plugs???

its sad to see how much ayu has sacrificed for her career.... her health is deteriorating and she wants to continue put up a good show... i feel sad :(

Sasha 4th January 2008 10:35 AM

I wanna cry T.T

Jwiz 4th January 2008 10:41 AM

being in such situation..it's really unfair for ayu.

jon_the_d 4th January 2008 10:55 AM

So sad...

from wikipedia:

Quote:

Long term exposure to environmental noise
Populations of people living near airports or freeways are exposed to levels of noise typically in the 65 to 75 dbA range. If lifestyles include significant outdoor or open window conditions, these exposures over time can degrade hearing. The U.S. EPA and various states have set noise standards to protect people from these adverse health risks. The EPA has identified the level of 70 db(A) for 24 hour exposure as the level necessary to protect the public from hearing loss (EPA, 1974).

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) typically is centered at 4000 Hz.
The louder the noise is, the shorter the safe amount of exposure is. Normally, the safe amount of exposure is reduced by a factor 2 for every additional 3 dB. For example, the safe daily exposure amount at 85 dB is 8 hours, while the safe exposure at 91 dB(A) is only 2 hours (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, 1998). Sometimes, a factor 2 per 5 dB is used.
Personal electronic audio devices, such as iPods (which can reach 115 decibels or higher), can produce powerful enough sound to cause significant Noise-Induced Hearing Loss, given that lesser intensities of even 85 dB can also cause hearing loss.
These concerts must be the cause of it, and the things she puts in her ears I always thought were NOT ear plugs, but headphones to be able to take direction from the producer/director, which would have to be on SUPER loud for her to be able to hear them over the whole concert...which is really sad cos it's the inner ear headphones (see the note on Ipod above) which can do the most damage wiithout you realising....

I hope the right ear isn't too bad, she can't let it deteriorate any further...

And all her fans should stop shouting and screaming so much!!!! whisper from now on! OK?!?!

HanabiChick 4th January 2008 10:59 AM

Poor Ayu, I hope she will take care of her other ear this year and not have such a big schedule :(

jon_the_d 4th January 2008 11:04 AM

more from wiki:

Quote:

Exposure to very loud noise (90 dB or more, such as jet engines at close range) can cause progressive hearing loss. Exposure to a single event of extremely loud noise (such as explosions) can also cause temporary or permanent hearing loss. A typical source of acoustic trauma is a too-loud music concert.
just thought I'd look into modern implants and such, artificial ears and things like that:
here

also, the fact that her right ear is still functioning (though we don;t know how well):
Quote:

Unilateral hearing loss
People with unilateral hearing loss (single sided deafness/SSD) can hear normally in one ear, but have trouble hearing out of the other ear. Problems with this type of deficit is inability to localize sounds (ie. unable to tell where traffic is coming from) and inability to process out background noise in a noisy environment, such as in a restaurant.
anyway, with only one ear totally deaf, and with rapid advances in medical technology, don't give up hope...

in the mean time, she'll have to take as much care of her good ear as humanly possible.

yikes! on second thoughts/further reading:

Quote:

He described the robotic sound of human voices perceived through the cochlear implant as "a croaking dalek with laryngitis".
AND

Quote:

As with every medical procedure, the surgery involves a certain amount of risk; in this case, the risks include skin infection, onset of tinnitus, damage to the vestibular system, and damage to facial nerves that can cause muscle weakness, or, in worst cases, disfiguring paralysis. There is also the risk of device failure, usually where the incision does not heal properly. This occurs in 2% of cases and the device must be removed. The operation also may destroy any residual hearing the patient may have; as a result, some doctors advise single-ear implantation, saving the other ear in case a biological treatment becomes available in future.
perhaps better hope for more improvements first :(

especially if you see the picture!!!! :(

robo ayu!?!?! :(

A-TeensFan 4th January 2008 11:15 AM

OMG, i'll support you forever Ayu~~~ keep goin' !!!! we love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

criminal 4th January 2008 11:15 AM

Oh my god. This is really upsetting. Though I can't stop thinking about Foxy Brown. I remember that she also was deaf in one ear, but now has regained full use of it thanks to some treatment/surgery. Maybe there is a chance? But maybe the rapper had a whole different diagnosis.

I don't know what I should wish for her. She practically said it herself. She's a fighter, alright.

austin. ♥ 4th January 2008 11:16 AM

My respect for the woman just quadrupled in the matter of a second.

truehappiness 4th January 2008 11:18 AM

The in-ear-monitors she uses during concerts are to hear herself as well as the band..., not to hear instructions from directors, as she rehearses all the moves done during the performances beforehand..

She could but she probably wont because she'll feel that she's not doing justice to her fans outside of Japan

~ayu-cake~ 4th January 2008 11:33 AM

This is so horrible to hear.
I really hope Ayu cuts down her schedule and takes it more easy.
I think she needs a well earned break.
It could explain her shaky performances recently :S

criminal 4th January 2008 11:34 AM

Maybe, since everyone visiting is a fan, can forgive Ayumi if she wants to take it slower, and maybe more quieter.

fine, I WILL call you selfish. if ayu's hearing needs a break, then I can't believe you'd still prefer her to risk it just to give you a concert...get out.

she won't go to singapore anyway....

agree

Lee_Hamasaki 4th January 2008 11:50 AM

agree too

Rebirthia 4th January 2008 11:52 AM

She has guts. To be a singer with just one ear is laudable, even if her singing is not really good (even if it has not been really good for the last years, I suppose, for this problem, because I still remember the Ayu of I am..., I really remember her...)

... it seems she really loves music. I think the lyrics well grow more and more stronger and deeper from now on.

AND PLEASE, AYU, FOR J.C.! TAKE A REST!

ayu_ready? 4th January 2008 12:06 PM

actually I thought she lost the hearing of the left ear after DOME 2001 completely, now I see it wasn't all lost that time

very sad. I don't want it to affect her career and life that much :(

GO AYU!

Draggi 4th January 2008 12:13 PM

I could imagine she will take a break after her ASIA TOUR 2008...
i think it would be okay..

and everyone..
her music and ayu herself...
will live forever..
in our hearts and minds..
i will never stop listening to her..

lalalaomg 4th January 2008 12:22 PM

Guess this means if I ever want to see Ayu live I better do it soon. T_T

Taki 4th January 2008 12:28 PM

If she has asked me, I would tell - " Stop to sing and become the producer or write lyrics for other...health is most important" but she would not make it because Ayu is workaholic and music is her life... she likes to sing

juunigatsu 4th January 2008 12:39 PM

Gosh, this made me cry.

Cys86 4th January 2008 12:43 PM

I'm not suprised that she will fight till the end. Remember?? Music is her life, if not music she would die (from the CNN interview)

Isthan 4th January 2008 12:47 PM

I wish this was a bad joke or something...

Music is her life and now she's partially lost hearing. I can't imagine what it feels like, although I have somewhat similar situation. Writing is very important to me and I'm gradually losing my right hand because of nerve damage, it's incurable. But that's no where near Ayu's situation, no way... she's had such terrible things happening to her already, losing her love and then her friend...

I admire her determination. Gambatte Ayu~!

KuroixShiroi_Namida 4th January 2008 12:50 PM

^ me too i wish it was some prank aswell but unfortunately it isn't...

i feel pretty sad right now too ;(!

Foxxy_Fuyumi 4th January 2008 12:51 PM

But she needs to look more about her life, her health....
But If she wants to continue!!
GANBARU!
=P

Hamasaki_Vaan 4th January 2008 12:52 PM

I feel so... upset....
Do we really want ayu to try so hard in this situation???

Cys86 4th January 2008 01:03 PM

But she will not give up and it's not our decision. If I were in her situation I wouldn't give up if music meant so much for me. But what can I say?? It's her choice and we need to respect it.

sibby 4th January 2008 01:07 PM

omg im like crying now. T^T. i really really really really appreciate her hard work and all. GO AYU :D

ian lim 4th January 2008 01:14 PM

what she gains and what she lost? All the best to ayu...................

Dgirl 4th January 2008 01:23 PM

i'm sorry for ayu. ....
but I admire her insistence

Mari-chan 4th January 2008 01:35 PM

Ah.. poor Ayu. Must be hard for a singer, to can hear only on one ear.
Maybee, she really made to much tours and so on. She needed to rest a little bit more.
Sure... something like that is because of loud sound.
So.. we all can be happy, she still wanna be a singer, and don't give up.
Hope, she will take care of her right ear.

I don't know whether this is true...... I don't know whether I should believe this or not..... my goddess, Ayu..... has lost half of her hearing......

Well, it's now possible to insert a transmitter inside ther ear bone that acts as an ear drum, it's like few thousand USD but I'm very sure Ayu can pay for it, if she wants it.

i highly doubt it... she has been having problems with her hearing since her Dome tour; plus it's not like this is some so-so drama, she's lost half her hearing and that's a scary experience

jon_the_d 4th January 2008 02:22 PM

see my posts back on page 7 about that (ear implant)^

it's nowhere near a replacement for natural hearing....

Publicity stunt? are you kidding? get out.

:no she won't do this kind of things and let all her fans worry just to boost her popularity or sales or whatever. That would be really awful.

Yeah, when she posts stuff in her blog, usually it's because we have to know. Like when she cried listening to GUILTY or when she broke up with Nagase... it's stuff that comes straight from the source. Nothing to do with avex.

roanmy 4th January 2008 02:51 PM

This is obviously very sad news... However... In CDL 07/08, she has the ear-piece thing in her LEFT ear. A little strange if she's gone deaf on that ear?

She has them in both ears usually...

My take on it is that it's there to aid her ear, because she wants to at least try to hear, and the IEM thing increases the volume of the sounds around her..

I noticed that during the MC, she left the left-ear one in and took the right ear one out... O____O Maybe that was a sign?

jon_the_d 4th January 2008 02:57 PM

NOT putting it in her left ear might arouse suspicions....she probably wouldn;t have wanted to give anything away before she was ready to announce it...

apart from that she's probably had all that equipment for ages, and it'll just be a habit.

She usually takes out both ear-monitors.. but this time.. during the MC, the left one was kept in. Suspicious. D:!!!!!!

Not~Yet 4th January 2008 03:05 PM

Yeah those ear-pieces are almost always used in both ears for what I know..
She may not hear the left one but it wouldn't look too good if it was hanging on her side through the whole live.

jon_the_d 4th January 2008 03:05 PM

so she left it in cos she can't hear anything through it anyway....

I think she probably at least wanted to try... if the sound is loud enough, you could probably at least.. "hear" it.. :\

jon_the_d 4th January 2008 03:11 PM

loud sounds are the last thing her failing hearing would need...:(

Well, a deaf ear can partially hear at a high decibel frequency.. but technically, you can't hear diddly. D:

Actually, it looks more like that earpiece was in there to block sound, rather than let it in.. :O

It looks like she forgot that she took the right one out JUST before the end, and was like "dang, better take the left one out before someone notices it's been in there so long.."

ayu_fantasy 4th January 2008 03:51 PM

Perhaps too... To block the sounds... That'll do help for her ear...

If Ayu ever does a concert again, I want her to lip synch the whole way through, and take good care of her ears... Please do not stress it again. Please ayu. Take care...

sitara 4th January 2008 03:53 PM

she needs a break! she is working for all these years non stop! she must have had burnout syndrom a couple of times already because of the constant stress! D:

SO SAD! take at least 1/2 year off and return in good spirits again!! ;_____;

Bad Wolf 4th January 2008 03:54 PM

I wouldn't want her to lip synch... that doesn't sit right with me. I would want her to take the absolute best care of herself as she can and preferably I'd have her not perform for a while, but since she's going to push on I can only say that I wish she does her absolute best with the talents she has. :( She's been managing for however long she figured out about her ear and hasn't let it stop her...

CDL08 makes so much sense to me now and it makes me want to cry... All those notes she couldn't hit, how she probably couldn't even HEAR that it came out like that... Her smile throughout SURREAL.. Her crying so hard during MY ALL--and Shuya crying with her--how she's been trying so hard for herself and for us fans. I'm tearing up just thinking about it. She's a wonderful woman and a true artist, but I just want the best for her. :( I want her to stay healthy.

Go Ayu! I'm sure that it won't stop her in making good piece of music ;)

how very sad....but it was bound to happen at the rate she is working. I'm sure her deafness will be permanent now. I hope she will take it easy after her ASIA TOUR 2008.

:(

CDL08 makes so much sense to me now and it makes me want to cry... All those notes she couldn't hit, how she probably couldn't even HEAR that it came out like that... Her smile throughout SURREAL.. Her crying so hard during MY ALL--and Shuya crying with her--how she's been trying so hard for herself and for us fans. I'm tearing up just thinking about it. She's a wonderful woman and a true artist, but I just want the best for her. :( I want her to stay healthy.

It seems that during the LALALAs of MY ALL, she's like "oh crap" and just smiles her way through it, because she knows she can't just be like "D:!!!!" in the middle of it..

OMG!! :( how brave of her to continue on anyway. I wonder if this struggle is why she's started to let some of her fashion slide (she's starting to copy Koda). I guess its sometimes difficult to remain on top of everything when she'd facing tragedy.
I wish the best for ayu

Well, the plaid is a nice refresher. I don't think she's copying Koda, since I don't think anyone does.. Ayu's probably just deciding: "Hm, I'll wear this." for some things, and in terms of magazines, she doesn't have a choice sometimes as to what clothes are given to her..

Mhmm. :( And it's just so sad to me--when I think of her smiling and how she sounded throughout SURREAL I wonder if she knew that's how she sounded or if she thought she was doing OK... god, I feel so bad for her. She's put up with enough in 07 she doesn't need any more stress or pain. :(

....... Now more than ever she should get better back-up singers. *coughcough* Trying to joke.

truehappiness 4th January 2008 04:15 PM

This kinda makes me think that her crying during MY ALL is a culmination of all the holding it in during the other numbers when she's supposed to be energetic.. seeing as how this show is to commemorate Natsuki in a way as well as celebrate her anniversary and she's disappointed that she is unable to hit the notes, thus the crying....

SURREAL's laughter in the middle of the song, as for glitter too.. could be that she's trying to laugh off the whole thing..

Here's an excerpt of her TalkAsia thing about her "feelings":
Quote:

Ayu: My job is simply to be myself, to be Ayumi Hamasaki. I might have a day during which I feel upset or sad, or perhaps a day when I feel very happy about something. No matter what my mood, my job is to sing as Ayumi Hamasaki all the time regardless of how I'm feeling on any particular day. For instance, when I'm performing on a music show, I would have just 5 minutes to sing one of my songs. My job is to sing a song of Ayumi Hamasaki in just a short 5 minutes of time. It doesn't matter whether I feel sad or angry at any given time. Of course, I don't always want to show those feelings either, but what can I say? I have feelings too, as I am a human being, so I put the emotions into all my songs.
Perhaps this was kinda what happened at CDL, and she broke? Frustration and stuff got to her? :\

Oh no... :(

I want her to take a break from concerts now...
