This issue has been mentioned several times - even on this forum - its definitely nothing new at all. And rumors like this HAVE effected her popularity in Japan but being outside of Japan, people generally don't see it as much. Making a big deal about everything that's negative when it comes to Ayu? Well, THIS is a big deal if proved true believe it or not.

There is a bit more in this article than the Chinese one. It asserts that the leak was done by a disgruntled Avex employee who is disgusted with how the upper management of Avex works.

^ according to livedoor (the link you posted) it was posted on 2008 April 28 09. I think that if it was proven true, something of all the things you've posted would've happened by now, as of course that did make sense. But as I previously said, one can't really assume they were in a relationship based on that photo or based on just what someone said. I am not saying that Matsuura and Ayu aren't on the photo, just that the photo looks as if they were having fun and not really as if they were having an intimate moment.

Even if they were in any kind of unprofessional relationship that would mean Ayu was cheating on Tomoya Nagase as I am pretty sure they started dating a couple of years before they even announced they're together in 2001 (they didn't wait 8 years since meeting each other?) and I really doubt that was ever the case

People already said here that this rumor has been around for a long time. :) This photo was already posted on this forum a year ago (when the livedoor article came out). The only thing I've posted is that the rumor has cost her some fans, that it has been rumored for a very long time (maybe even since her debut), and that if there is more proof, it would be very damaging to her career. The point is whether or not Friday will ever publish all that they have or if Avex will continue to buy them off (or whatever it is they are doing)

btw, her relationship with Tomoya is thought to have started in 2000. Max/Ayu supposedly broke up in summer/fall 2000.

That rumour is so huge over here. Since I moved over here and I talk to ppl and say that I'm a fan of Ayu they often respond with "Hey, did you know Ayu is 90% platic..." Then I often ask, "and you know this from what?" The answers are often "well my firend said so" and such. The funny thing is that its only guys who says things like this, girls always goes "Oh really? She is sooooo beautiful!!!".

Hi MissElin! I so agree with everything you said. What you described is like a typical response from the Japanese people I met, who come to my country for studying or work. Also, when I was in Japan this is the response too. They seem to think that "foreigners" like us (I assume you're not Japanese) do not know about her pre Avex days. We know. We just don't see anything that drastic (also being Asian I know about all the plastic surgeries we can do). One Japanese person I know even said that because she was from fukuoka, that she knew some people who knew Ayu when she was young, and other bullocks. I just use video clips throughout her career to judge how much she's changed. No need for someone to "enlighten" me.

And yeah, most of the (sweet and kind) Japanese girls say positive things about Ayu and her beautiful self and works, but the guys usually say she's plastic and act all know-it-all-ish.

It will prove that Ayu kissed Max at some party. Doesn't prove anything else. From kissing to cohabiting with your boss, that's a big jump. Totally illogical.

Unless there are videos or pictures out there of Ayu a la "Paris Hilton-style", noone will be able to prove that Ayu was sleeping with her boss.

But, if this WERE true, and Ayu WAS dating Max, then she would have been cheating on Nagase. If I remember correctly, they had been dating for about ten years. (They met on a dorama and began dating shortly afterwards, I think.)

But I don't think it would affect her career at all at this point. I mean, Ayu has a huge fanbase but she isn't loved by the mainstream Japanese public (like Namie Amuro at the moment or SMAP or Johnny's or EXILE). Right now, imo, she has a career closer to Seiko Matsuda (except with decent CD sales) and her biggest profit comes from touring, she is more capable of selling-out huge arenas than more popular artists (like Seiko) and her fans are quite fanatic.

Why am I comparing her to Seiko Matsuda? Because she, Seiko, is the QUEEN of controversy. She made some things in the past that would make Madonna blush (relationship with bazillion different guys, cheating on bazillion different guys - everything caught by the media, drug abuse, was responsible for the suicide attempt of another huge female artist, was the responsible for the suicide attempt of her own daughter, had fights with her past agencies, etc. etc). And look, she still is selling-out huge arenas all over Japan, CM deals and has a huge fanbase. So there you go, I don't think it'll affect Ayu that much.

Anyway, surprise surprise, I always thought a relationship between the two of them was quite obvious. The whole "believing in her blindly after listening to her at a karaoke" thing ALWAYS sounded fishy and somewhat unbelievable. And Ayu and AVEX, like most Jpop artists and agencies, have lots and lots of skeletons in their closets.

Yeah, looks exactly the same to me. The only difference is the lighting and angle in the picture. The same thing happened in the Whatever tv appearances at the time - depending on the lighting of the music show, her hair either looked totally black or more brownish, especially in the front. I'm surprised I hadn't seen that other photo until now.

Honestly, even BEFORE pictures leaked, I always kind of suspected this was a strong possibility. Just based on how they supposedly met and the circumstances surrounding that and her early career with Avex. That doesn't mean though that the stuff she released wasn't great at the time, it definitely was and it doesn't mean she didn't deserve it either. Has anyone else thought that the lyrics for Love~Destiny~ are about Max? I always thought that the lyrics fit perfectly.

I agree these days that her career is much closer to Seiko's than anything else. You forgot to add, supposedly cheated with a member of New Kids on the Block to the list. :) Its worth noting though that most of those scandals occurred either during the time her popularity was nose diving or well after the fact.

And yep, totally agree with your last paragraph. I think sometimes, we as foreigners, view Japan with this heightened sense of morality that doesn't exactly mesh with reality. Many Japanese businesses are extremely dirty, including the record companies.
