That's because it was a completely standard single. There were no b-sides and it had already been revealed that 'HEART STATION' and 'Stay Gold' would be featured on Utada's new album. Besides, if you look at her album sales right now, you'd see she's doing not too shabby.

I think it would be fun, to collaborate once like with Ayu X KEIKO, I loved that duo. Though I really don't think Ayu and Hikki's voices would match, they're both great singers but they have completely different styles, in which I think wouldn't mix too well.
Also I don't think Ayu would be so desperate as to run to Hikki if she lost popularity among the fans. And as others said she's a perfectionist and wouldn't want others to get in her way all the time. And even if Ayu became desperate I think she'd rather go to Madonna haha jsut for the fun of it
