Koda not being there doesn´t surprises much, but I don´t still get why nor Ayu or Ayaka aren´t there. Ayu may not be selling as hell nowadays, but well, now that I think of it, she has not been much on TV or magazines, and she has been more focused on concerts, but still, she should have least have appeared at the bottom of the list. And wasn´t ayaka really popular?

I think the reason as to why he's on the list is probably because after he revealed he was the grandson of the late former prime minister Noboru Takeshita & whether you like it or not , it has helped him to boost up his popularity a LOT & also BREAKERZ too

cos frankly if he didn't choose to reveal it before he turned 30 last year , BREAKERZ will still be at the pit , chart position wise

There may be other athletes on the list, I just simply don't know what their names are. I actually went to some of the World Baseball Classic games with my boyfriend. He wanted to go even though he isn't really that big of a baseball fan but simply because he wanted to see Ichiro. He really is treated as kind of like a hero there in the pop culture right now.

My guess is that Ayu would have done really well on the recognition question, but must have done poorly on the interest question. As for ayaka, I don't know.

Whats interesting is even on the breakdown of what the women age groups voted for - across all the age groups they heavily favored the male artists over the females and on the mens list its almost exclusively male artists.

Isn't this kind of usual there? I mean... we can almost count on the fingers the important female acts jpop had since the 70s... But it's not that easy with male acts...

Not to mention that female acts in J-pop have far shorter lifespans in the industry compared to male acts.

You'd think Ayu would at least be on the list, considering her Morinaga and Panasonic endorsements, at least. May be this year, because of Dragonball.

There are way more popular female acts from the 70s onwards that would take several hands to count on. :) There aren't THAT few. They just simply aren't talked about much on this board because we pretty much just deal with current artists. But yeah, generally they don't stick around like say Southern All Stars. Many of them left the entertainment industry to raise families.

But anyways, you'd think you'd at least see a few more females on the womens list of rankings, but it is dominated by men as well. I think that might have to do with a general shortage of female talent that are really great that people are interested in at the moment. We need some fresh blood on the female side that not only will do well publicly but that will have real talent to back it up. There hasn't been really any new female talent to come out that I've been super impressed by for at least a few years now expect for Shiho the singer from Superfly - but even then, she's not gaining the popularity she should. I wonder when the next big female star will come and who it will be?

Yamashita Tomohisa at least made the list voted by teen girls. But really, what has NEWS done lately thats very popular outside of the usual Johnny's fan base?

May be we need some hype, like a hispanic girl straight from South America or something. Haha.

I'm assuming this list goes on though, because aren't those numbers in the parenthases last year's ranking?

Can someone clarify if this is "2008" rankings? I mean, they base it on what they viewed last year, or is it 2009 up to this point in time?

^ Right, it is a list that is released annually. They ranked 1,149 entertainers. However as far as I know only the top 100 are released - I could be wrong though.

this is a little different...but remember back when everyone was like "who's going to take the title as Queen from Ayu?"

And it was like, Ai Otsuka, Ami Suzuki, then kuu...and then no one really even did anything...No female artist has gotten really big have they...at least not in the same terms as namie, ayu, and hikki...i think.

Yeah its been a while. There have been glimpses of that, but nobody that has been able to make it last. I thought Otsuka Ai might have legitimately had a shot back in 04/05 but then she just became very stagnant in basically everything that she did.

The last really attention grabbing drama a NEWS member was in was in 2005. Code Blue did alright last year as well but didn't seem to have quite a lasting impact and NEWS wasn't involved with a theme song or anything like that. They also don't have a tv show like most Johnny's groups do.

I believe this gets published the same month every year. This is the May issue, so you can think May 2008-May 2009.

I'm just amazed at the pretty diverse group.

I'm not talking about only popular acts... I'm talking about that bizarre status some of them get becoming then remembered for ages... I may be wrong, but as far I know, very little of the considered top jpop acts were women... when thinking about the really influent ones (artists I discovered talking to people more intereste in old jpop than me, and some of then big fans of enka music and older pop acts), I can remember Matsutoya Yumi, Akina Kakamori, Seiko Matsuda, Princess Princess, Pink Lady, Minako Honda, Izumi Sakai, DCT, Namie Amuro, Speed... Shiina Ringo, Hikaru Utada and Ayumi Hamasaki if we take in consideration the ones that became famous in the final of the 90s...

I don't know... there are so much more man names... IMO it looks like japanese just prefer male enterteiners... and that they still think is wrong when women work after a certain age (a lot of the female singers retired to make some babies :P)

You are missing probably the MOST influential one: Yamaguchi Momoe, also it's Akina NAKAmori. :) You already listed quite a few people, but there are still even way more than that such as off the top of my head: Kudo Shizuka, Chisato Moritaka, Teresa Tan, Rebecca (NOKKO), Tomomi Kahala (if we are going to include late 90s), WINK, Nakayama Miho, Itsuwa Mayumi, Kawai Sonoko. And those I would say are just some of the really top tier names. So really, not that small of an amount. Maybe still smaller than the men, but it seems that there was definitely a higher concentration of successful female talent in the 70s/80s than there is today.

The singers that got famous in the 00s... We have Ayaka, Koda, Ai Otsuka and Mika Nakashima... I don't really feel that they made it to the top (I mean, that they will turn into very influential pop icons), maybe Koda...

Compared to their senpai ARASHI & koukai KAT-TUN , NEWS's selling power's the least if you compare all 3 bands side by side together which's quite unfortunate

seriously no other jpop female solo artiste has accomplished what has ayumi done in the 21st century , it's going to be hard for her to 'find' a successor of sorts

that's the thing , they don't have a variety show , they're probably the only group that doesn't have 1 in Johnny's

heck even Kanjani8 has their own one which started last year but not NEWS which's real fishy

I think their popularity & sales will be higher should they have 1 & ehhh you don't count Ryusei no Kizuna in the mix ?
