To add on, her arrangements are beautifully executed as well. Background vocals + haunting instruments = masterpiece of the instrumentals/original karaoke :D.

So we've stripped the songs down to the bone to rate best instrumentals now lol.
Next up: Best Song Credits |
Any song that has Utada as sole writer and primary producer aka most of heart station and ultra blue. But nijiiro bus > ultra who.

Nijiro Bus is annoying and I hate the way she sings the verses too. However, I really like the part (melody/composition) where she goes: Ensoku zenya wa kanarazu nebusoku Tanoshimi de tanoshimi de Kininaru ano ko ga totsuzen ryuugaku Setsunakute setsunakute I guess that's the prechorus? |
Reminds me what could have been with Kiss n Cry and an extra 'rap' verse. That song up until the 2nd chorus is everything.

http://i62.tinypic.com/160zsht.jpg KEYBOARD WARRIOR! Nijiiro BASU is a good song but it's not an anytime everyday song. |
^ Nijiiro bus is my soul song, I can do it everyday all day tbh.
But I won't front and say that Be My Last and even Kairo is worse. Then we have Eclipse which is probably my favourite interlude. |
It took years for that interlude to grow on me. I love the one on DEEP RIVER though. Then Gentle Breast came along and I had to give jesus all the praise and all the glory.
|
Nijiiro Bus is an ew never song. It's just so ugly and gross and annoying lol

I love nijiiro bus. then again my points are never valid because I like all of utada's songs. Some more than others but she doesn't have any songs where I could legitimately say I hate it or it's gross or terrible.
|
I like the bridge in Niji-iro because the song goes from happy-go-lucky to "take me to a planet where there is no one" like aight Utada
|
Her melancholy is one of her best traits.
Urge to go back and listen to Goodbye Happiness now. EDIT: Just want to say we're into her 5th year of hiatus. It's been 7 years to the month since her last Japanese album. Like we're in completely different places in our lives. I'm no longer in college or in my early 20s. I'm d@mn near 30! That's crazy! I hope she has fans left 'cause we've all grown up! |
It's been 7 long years. I've been a fan of Utada for FAR LONGER than ayu and...
Oh lord when she dropped sakura nagashi out of thin air it was just... I couldn't believe it. I thought Angela Aki won that year with Kokuhaku but Sakura Nagashi made me go like 'who's ayu? Who's namie? Who's Kumi? Who's anyone else?' I'm in a better place in my life so her melancholy isn't as impactful as it once was (and it REALLY WAS. I can't even make myself listen to Be My Last volitionally, but comimg up randomly is ok, because personal reasons and I wanna forget it exists sometimes because it just hit every chord at one point) but if she were to make another ballad I will be onboard 100%. |
^Sakura Nagashi is the only song I like from her, I was curiuous because it was her supposed "comeback" song, the voice, the piano, It's a beautiful masterpiece.
|
Sakura Nagashi. The one song she happens to just nonchalantly release while on hiatus shits on every ballad ayu has released since utada went on hiatus. Even without her vocals, the instrumental for Sakura Nagashi is so fucking beautiful and powerful. It easily stands on it's own.

^Oh my god. My bad lol.
And honorable mention to "Keep Tryin'" Instrumental. And I love hearing Utada's lower register as backing vocals in her instrumentals. And just any interesting sounds you don't get to hear well in the original song. Like in HEART STATION. At the end of the choruses, "I miss you/love you/himitsu," you can hear a very high pitched chipmunked Utada. Wasn't until years later that I caught that. |

My favorite album of hers will always be Distance, but I think her masterpiece is DEEP RIVER. I really dislike HEART STATION. |

Heart Station made me appreciate the layering found in her songs. |
