Same. It seems downright racist if you ask me :\

4minute Girl 4th December 2010 03:21 AM

a lot of people seem to be totally uneducated on this issue and are throwing around strong words like 'racism', there is actually a big difference between stereotyping and racism. i'll just leave it at that i don't want to go into it any further because i don't know what the rules are on AHS about this sort of stuff and i don't want to cause trouble

miroro 4th December 2010 10:39 AM

^thank you! omg, im thinking the same, people just need to calm down about this:o

milky_way 4th December 2010 02:41 PM

Racism and stereotyping go hand in hand, so I don't see why anyone would say it's one over the other. Cultural appropriation at its best.

Stereotypes and racism are so closely linked that it's irresponsible to say that there is a big difference between the two.

You can argue that there are "good stereotypes" that are complimentary to an ethnic group but I prefer to believe that any generalization about any ethnic group is detrimental to their humanity. By reducing them to a set of predetermined aspects, you are drawing a clear distinction between you and them.

Can you really watch "Yayaya" and think that what it portrays is flattering to Native Americans? Would you, personally, want to be seen doing anything that the girls do in the video? No, because it's vulgar, antiquated, and embarrassing.

If you think it's okay because it's "just pop culture" you should reexamine just how influential pop culture is.

bondingo 5th December 2010 01:55 AM

^^ & ^ People who actually know what they're talking about. I don't understand how anyone can look at the video and concept and not think it's utterly ridiculous and incredibly offensive.

Calling me "uneducated" because I said "it seems downright racist" says a lot about your own character. I adore T-ARA but I'm not going to defend them for going through with a concept like this (their idea or (obviously) not). Racism isn't strictly confined to hating someone because of their race, and the sooner you realize that, the sooner you might be able to get off your damn high horse.

4minute Girl 5th December 2010 04:54 AM

umm no i completely see how it would be offensive to some, i'm saying i don't see it as 'downright racism' like you said. i just don't see any point in the seemingly endless arguments about this on the international sites. they aren't taught about the history of this stuff in korea and this concept is something that's completely acceptable to CCM (not saying that it's an excuse for them, it's just the way it is and we aren't going to change that) and people in korea, which is their target audience, love it. IMO it's harmless. there's no malicious intent behind it, simply ignorance on their stylist's part since she didn't do her research when she was deciding on a concept. i'm not going to get mad about it.

I love T-ara and these songs, but that video was not okay (and gasp, I am native american, and actually a part of my tribe). Was it done in ignorance? Probably. Does that make it okay? No. Can anything really be done about it? Probably not. A lot of those things are probably stuff they picked up from older western media that often portrayed Native Americans that way until they got the hint that it was hurtful. And obviously NA aren't known much about outside of the Americas. I'm not trying to give them excuses, but that's just kinda the way it is when you get down to it.

And that whole stereotypes and racism thing? Yeah no. Racism is built heavily off stereotypes. they may not be the same exact thing, but one depends heavily on the other. (And there's no such thing as a "good stereotype".)

But we're not getting mad about it. We're discussing it.

If we were mad about it, we would be attacking T-ARA, Core Contents Media, and Korea in general, but we're not because we know the issue is bigger than all of them.

Us discussing the video may not change anything about it in Korea, but it will have an effect in the environments we frequent. Someone on AHS will read this discussion and form their own conclusion about stereotypes and racism on the global landscape and will hopefully be better for it.
