I realize that, of course, their popularity could have become less. That's completely viable. The only problem is that this doesn't or barely show in their single sales, and it'd be weird if somehow their popularity dropped in between the single and the album. If all of their singles would've done less I could've expected a sudden drop. This just seems so random...

At least the Mr. Children album had a very good reason for not selling a million, what with the album being announced basically a few days in advance and there not being any single or promotion for it. But then that's Mr. Children and they can do NO wrong XD

I guess, but you could hardly say that Ayu's or Utada's popularity was dropping during their peak when Ayu had evolution and M being some of her biggest hits ever, yet the album sold less than Duty and it was the same with Hikki. Her singles were still selling as much as they did before back then, but her album sales kept dropping. Look at the sales of her Distance singles, almost all of those crossed a million mark and outsold all her First Love singles, yet the album sales dropped by 3 millions.

Kinda depends on how one defines popularity. If one thinks popularity is all about sales, then yes, they could say that after Duty, Ayu's popularity started decreasing.

But if one defines popularity as presence, influence, longevity, etc., then it's a different story. :P

I know, I was just trying to prove that regardless of their stellar single sales, the album sales can drop xD

You have a point there. Never really thought about it. It's almost as if an artist's most popular singles come after their best selling album, haha. I guess that's because they have the "inverted" single release system in Japan.

Anyway, I guess you were right on EXILE. Still, I'm kind of sad, since they and Mr. Children were my "guaranteed million sellers". At this point in time, Japan doesn't have any anymore : /
