I remember her fans in this forum saying that she was the new queen of jpop and that ayu was finished, I bet they are not even fans of her now lol

Can't deny how hot Kanayan is these days, but She isn't the queen, (Diva is OK). Her music is good but I haven't watched her whole tour yet. Just finish some parts

As mentioned before the album sold 70k in 2015 alone the total sales are at over 250k and her new single sold almost 200k on itunes alone digitally (32k physically)
Not saying she's "the new queen" or smth but she's been the top digital seller for quite some time now and her albums sell a LOT so...

Sorry for getting defensive I just like kanayan a lot

ayumisrael 18th June 2015 10:36 AM

How come we don't have iTunes numbers for A ONE album/songs?

Surreal17 18th June 2015 04:03 PM

Hmmm, true. I find this weird.

AyuGAME 18th June 2015 04:39 PM

Rather than Queen, I think Kana more like a princess to me, I don't really like what she release lately...with sweet do be do be do ala country beat...

But still she is one of the most famous female singer in Japan right now. Along with Namie I think. Nobody come close to their sales right now.

orbitalaspect 19th June 2015 02:51 AM

Well, firstly, I am super thrilled that Ayu passed the 50k mark. Considering I expected it to sell almost 10k less. So, that's a big deal. This is a very low drop in sales for her, so she did something right this time, and it reflects.

Onto the rest of it: I like Kana, and I think she's talented, but I think she is really becoming a one-trick pony. Most of her songs are about love, and it's already hurting her sales to be singing about it so much. It was a huge selling point due to her style for her first two albums, but I think the super sharp fall in sales for Thank you, Love and Love Place were not coincidental. She's a great artist, but I think she is still finding her niche outside of this subject. She hasn't had much grand interest in songs like GO FOR IT!! or We Don't Stop. I hope she finds an upbeat, non-love-theme style that propels her. I think, out of all the artists, music fans will be most receptive to Kana transiting to a different style of music. People love her and she really is the new Ayu while being quite different from Ayu.

Namie just sounds tired at this point. It's either time for her to get off the EDM or time for her to fade out like everyone else. She has such a powerful image and presence though, so I'd like to hope that the next album will not follow in the same sound as PAST < FUTURE, Uncontrolled, FEEL, and _genic. I like when Namie does a hot dance track, as only she can seem to do. Uncontrolled was a HUGE stretch for me, especially when she put the bastardized versions of GO ROUND and YEAH-OH on there while the originals were of much better quality. FEEL came off as filled with filler songs, nothing magical apart from Alive, Contrail, and Hands On Me. But _genic, or _generic as I love-and-hatingly refer to it, is over-saturated... way over-saturated with really generic lyrics. I will give _genic two major props though: It has a couple of Namie's amazing sweat-drenching EDM tracks on it, and she manages to sing about a lot of different subjects. I also liked her experimental track with Hatsune Miku. It was a nice throwback to the off-beat production on tracks like Dr. I wish Namie did more experimental work like Dr. and B Who I Want 2 B. That style is very unique to her as an artist, and I think she could do some amazing things with it.

Overall, what still sells me about Ayu over anyone else is the variety on every album. I love A ONE for being EDM, piano ballad, rock, acoustic rock, dream pop, dream ballad, trance/techno, and ethereal all at different points. It makes Ayu records an adventure. I wasn't into WOML, with LOVE, or _genic because they feature maybe one or two variations on the same genre of music. And while Ayu has done some stuff that seems bland, her singles are usually never a good indication of what the whole album will sound like. That's not an attribution I can assign to Koda, Namie, or Kana.

^I know, I thought being optimistic that it will sell 20k :laugh so I'm more than satisfied

Selling 200k digitally is equal to selling 20k physically according to RIAA so there's no big deal

The only real fact is that she's going downhill faster than ayu

TBH BRIGHTER DAY sounds better than anything on _genic. I thought she was slowly finding a new direction, but _genic proved me wrong. It's a solid pop album though, but nothing is really outstanding. She kind of replaced Kumi for me, as I parted with her after the last studio album, listened to the new previews and they sound even worse xD I gave up on Kana a year ago.

Er... nope. 200k copies are 200k copies, 20k copies are 20k copies. Unless there are people buying 100 digital copies each, it still means the song sold 200k copies to (+-) different 200k people. It actually may be even more accurate because you need to buy several physical copies, but once you buy it once you can just download the track again and again.

The fact that there are more people buying physical copies than digital copies in Japan doesn't mean each digital copy is less worthy on a popularity measurement point of view. It may be on a money making point of view, but I don't know the difference between the production costs of both itens considering physical CDs are more expensive to sell, but they are also far more expensive to produce... Maybe if you count the price of the physical media, booklet printing, logistic issues, the label and the artist are making the same amount by a track sold physically and digitally, maybe it doesn't.

But as far as overall impact goes, 1 million copies sold are 1 million copies sold, and 10k copies are 10k copies.

Luck16 20th June 2015 10:30 PM

lol Kana is not going anywhere
She's the queen of digital, she has like 25 double/triple/platinum certifications in different digital formats
darling will probably get a milion certification by the end of the year, it's still charting inside the top 30 in digital charts despite being released almost one year ago
Her latest album sold 250k and her next one probably won't fall short from that number as well because she already has another monster hit with Moshimo...
So don't hate on the girl just because she's doing way better than ur fave, that's not a cute look

AyumiAi 21st June 2015 04:03 AM

^ I think when people say she's been declining its cuz her peak and her fall were relatively quick, she's still more popular than Ayu but her digital singles all used to reach the million certification at her peak, now everything is just platinum. Which is really GOOD! just not what she used to be, so its a sign of her going downhill. And even her album sales are going downhill 700,000+ vs her now 250,000 not that its bad just not what it was.

Matt_rq 21st June 2015 05:59 AM

I´m happy about Kana, I´m not a big fan of her but I like some of her music. Selling well in Japan is not a matter of good music or good artist itself, it´s just popularity, let´s think about AKB48... I prefer keeping my opinion about all that.

Hello, I'm also a big fan of Kana, but something you said really caught my interest...how do you know how much she sold on iTunes? as far as I know there isn't a site that publishes that data.

and to add to your statement her single "Darling" that was released last year got certified 3x platinum by RIAJ as a full track. Kana is definitely the current it girl.

There is this site called tnsori idk where they get the numbers from but they seem pretty legit lol You can check them out there ^^

Pieces_of_SEVEN 22nd June 2015 07:45 AM

^Had no idea about that...them and iTunes should somehow partner up and tally sales together because Oricon is freakin ridiculous.
