Well, we've got too many competitors here for March 30th - it could be quite a traffic jam...

I hope this ends up in the top ten - or better yet, the top five - but Ayu's getting a bit of involvement, even Britney Spears, Tohoshinki, T.M.Revolution - uh oh...

...and please, Sales > Ranks. tyvm.

Bigtop 2nd March 2011 05:44 AM

At least it's better than her last single, although she missed out on a top ten, but I think she can keep the momentum and become the next YUI!

WAIT WHAT? :irked
Oh please, she's herself and there's no thing like "...the next *insert the senior artist name here which will inherit the same title*"
Two different people are different.

Can you stop saying that? :thud

HTMSD 2nd March 2011 07:13 AM

Dear mellody, I just want to answer your post with this four quotes from an ayu thread.
Again, sorry for bringing ayu's on miwa thread, but I hope this will open your opinion about sales > rank.

Yeah, the fans are there and thats all the counts.

As for the early post, position DOES count. Sales are more important true, but if you are a company then you want the artist that has more number 1 albums then albums that don't even reach the top 5. A ton of people go by positions on charts. If its a number 1 seller then people want to know why and go out to buy, which adds more to the sales.

Its all in the marketing and what not.

Then explain to me why the Japanese general public isn't interested in buying Ayu's singles that always reach #1 and albums with so many #1 hits? A ton of people don't care about the charts (in Japan, where it counts in this case). The record labels care about the money they earn.

Let's say you have two artists, one who got 3 #1s and sold 10-30k with each album, or the other one, who has never reached #1, but keeps selling 100k+ with every release? Which one would you sign to your label? Now days good position on charts usually means good timing :rolleyes

The woman who has been Queen of Jpop for a decade, and still going strong. The artiste who has sold too many amazing releases with crazy sales to count. The first person who more or less everyone thinks about when we say "Japanese music industry".

Selling well is not an issue anymore. Not making money is not an issue either. ayu is one person who will never be dropped.

Let's not even talk about ayu here. I listen to many other artistes, some of whom have been releasing music for years and years, with number of singles/albums in the Top 5 less than 10 times. But they are still around, releasing wonderful music. An extreme example, look at Perfume. They have been around a decade, and only started selling really well a couple of years ago. And look where they are now, one of the strongest girl groups in Japan. If your theory of "drop an artiste if they don't sell" is true, then Perfume would have been gone long long ago, and we would have lost an awesome group.

The Japanese music industry is about people who have talent and the passion to work hard, not about some silly numbers and charts. That's my honest opinion, and I do hope people would stop thinking that money means everything.

And do you remember this?
1988/04/14 Marrakech # 1 , 181,540
1988/09/07 Tabidachi wa Freesia # 1 , 209,080
1989/11/15 Precious Heart # 2 , 129,320
1990/07/15 The Right Combination(Seiko and Donnie Wahlberg) # 28 , 50,420
1990/11/21 We Are Love # 16 62,790

kthxbai.

Bigtop 2nd March 2011 07:49 AM

Okay, let's stop talking about rankings and talk about her performance in general... After all, we see some songs that might have lower sales rankings but might have better song quality in terms of content!

mellody 2nd March 2011 08:05 AM

I understand your concern very well, let me explain my thoughts here too, I hope it's okay, since I'm talking about miwa popularity here too.

My standard will always the same : Sales > Ranks
This is my point of view and I know it's a different point of view with Japan media.
Japan and those silly media always makes us to think that Ranks > Sales
Because of what? Their news. They will always push the ranks to makes everything is really glamorous. It's just a point of view. For example, I'll pick Maaya Sakamoto records.

Spoiler:
Her latest album, You can't catch me sold 26,607 copies on first week and got #1 for the first time.
Her previous album, Kazeyomi sold 36,061 copies on first week and got #3.
Total sales for You can't catch me in 6 weeks are 38,775.
Total sales for Kazeyomi in 6 weeks are 52,249.
But, which one is more popular? You can't catch me of course.
Why? Oricon and Media makes an article for the ranks, and didn't mentioning the sales at all.
...yet the Music Label cares about Ranks more than Sales. The article:
Spoiler:
Following the release of her much talked about 7th studio album 「You can't catch me 」 yesterday, Sakamoto Maaya finally debuts at #1 on Oricon Daily Ranking. This marks Sakamoto's first time at #1 since 13 years of her career as well as the second seiyuu-singer to do so. (The first being Mizuki Nana's album "ULTIMATE DIAMOND") Her past album, Kazeyomi, is by far her best selling studio album but only peaked #3 on Weekly Ranking. Whether or not 「You can't catch me 」will be able to stay on at #1 for the whole week is left to be seen. If it does, this would prove a big accomplishment for Sakamoto, considering for someone who has been in the industry as long as her.

Even they have different records for ranks and sales, best selling studio album is less important than best ranking studio album. According to Japan media.

That's the fact, but why I care about Sales more than Ranks? Simple.

Spoiler:
I think only certain people buy physical format CD's. Physical CD singles are a dying format, and the TRUE gimmicks are the only things that are keeping the charts alive. If there's no physical sales, there's no thing called CD Singles Ranking, because ranks are based from sales.

And especially since it's a dying format, it is becoming more of a franchise for the fans rather than the typical consumer. Well yes it is true that even casual buyers count for the share of the total sales. This is obvious. People who are die-hard wotaku / stans / fans buy multiple versions of a single and the business encourages it. (Idol groups wota for example)

If fans buy almost all the versions of a certain group (i.e AKB) then doesn't that suggest the level of interest of fans?

There's an AKB fan but that person never buy singles. That person said he just buy albums. Personally I think Singles in general is just part of the gimmic. Albums are better.

Another example to pick, I wonder what Morning Musume's recent single figures are actually translating to as amount of real consumers. Because I clearly remember that Morning Musume in the past could sell more than 250k copies for each single. Why? One person could buy more than 1 copy. But nowadays, they only sell around 10-30k. Maybe that's the real number of the fans?

What if AKB fans is only 10,000, but each of them bought 10 copies for their single with 5 version of the singles? Are they considered popular?
What if miwa (for example) fans is only 100,000 but they only buy 1 copy for their single with only 2 version of the singles ? Which one is more popular?

This is why I keep thinking that Sales is more important than Ranks, too bad Japanese Media doesn't care about this.
No highlights about this thing too, which makes me think *sometimes* the buyer of their products is the music label itself.

That's so long huh? :laugh
That's my opinion anyway, I will always keep thinking that Sales is more important than Ranks~

miwa upcoming album will reflects her popularity, by looking at the sales later, hopefully doesn't flop.

EDITED:
Adding Bigtop comments, and yeah, I don't care with Ranks after all, she's just need to release pretty good music, and continue working on music industry to make a good music ;)
