Am I just biased or does Ayu's cover sound better than everyone else's? I don't even mean that as a burn to any of the others (I think a lot of the other singers sound great!). BUT SERIOUSLY. Her vocals are AWESOME!!

WEEEEE!!!!!!! This is the best distraction from studying for finals!!!! XD

Pieces_of_SEVEN 6th December 2014 02:06 AM

^^It's probably a little bit of bias, and a little bit of truth! Either way, I agree! This, and FINAL DISTANCE are my favorites so far. Spectacular.

I tried Utada's music before, and it wasn't very interesting for me, I only like her last song for Evangelion. Now with the covers I'm falling in love. Movin on..... is amazing

ayumint 6th December 2014 03:04 AM

I really loved it, Ayu is excellent for choosing what to sing by her own decision ♡♡♡Can't wait to get its full version
When i heard "Movin'on without you" part, it was still Ayu's voice but just edited.

Every single note is edited nowadays, but I seriously doubt they changed her pitch.

It really doesn't sound too western to me, it very much sounds like a 21st century danceable, uplifting and somewhat euphoric JPOP party song.

THIS THIS THIS, SO MUCH THIS. Japanese-style melodies with more western-style production have always been what my favorite J-pop has been. Melodies in Japan lately are far too western - if not mimicking the style, then actually written by western pop songwriters, and the feeling is just GONE, you know? But this, this track right here, this is my JAM right now. This is what J-pop should sound like all the time right now!

*listens to the preview again*

yessssss

this actually reminds me of like, a slightly more modern version of her glory days remixes <3

THE PREVIEW IS FANTASTIC OMG (Probably because I hate the original so things can only look up). Is it just me or does it sound a liiittle too polished? Is it possible that's a tad too much autotune?

~kashifaita~ 6th December 2014 07:50 AM

THE PREVIEW JUST SLAYED ME. I am TOTALLY digging this omfg.
Shiina Ringo does a fantastic job on Letters too, imo!

Violently Happy 6th December 2014 07:57 AM

I love the preview for Ayu's!!!! I'll be able to dance to both Hikki's and Ayu's versions! Movin' On Without You is one of my favorite Hikki tracks, and me and my mom always blast it in the car! XD

Really? I can't stand her voice.

i am still weirded out by tis whole thing. I would be weirded out if they did an Ayu tribute too. Like, she's not dead and still active.... WHY? lol Also if they wanted to do it so much why not to chose younger singers who are just starting their careers? Cuz this is a bit odd. i know they are friends and stuff but.... i dunno it just doesn't make much sense to me lol

It's just her (or better, for her) 15th Anniversary project I think and it makes sense if you see this album as a tribute to her career from the big names of JPOP history still active. Anyway, I didn't like Movin' out without you. I think it was boring... but Ayu's version seems amazing and really fun to dance as much as XOXO or Feel the love (not Lelio, Lelio is perfection u.u)

Yes, it does sound very polished, but if you listen to Snowy kiss or Lelio for example, it's the same. I think times of light editing are gone for good.

jiarongisme 6th December 2014 12:53 PM

UGH it sounds so good! Can't wait for the full song!!

chocopockymaster 6th December 2014 01:22 PM

Maybe if Utada wasn't on hiatus the cover album wouldn't be a thing. 15th anniversaries are all the rage nowadays and it would be silly to NOT acknowledge hers in some way...but it's kind of hard to do that when she's hiding out in Europe somewhere with her Italian bartender husband and not doing any activities :P

andycruize 6th December 2014 03:47 PM

Just hear movin' on without u ayu version, aaaand it's sound AMAZING!! So people love so much about ayu cover 1 of utada song, and that's mean people will fall so deep in love if utada write a song for ayumi right? I hope both of them do a collaboration for the next ayu single or album. I wish :)

Coelacanth 6th December 2014 03:54 PM

lmao what alternate universe am I in? I mean, the production certainly breathes new life into the song, but the melody is still god awful. The "ii onna enjiru" part of the melody sounds so incredibly dissonant it actually makes me wince, regardless of whether it's Utada OR Ayu singing it.

This, uh, doesn't touch ANYTHING on Colours. Also confirms my suspicions that most Ayu fans have very.. different tastes in pop music, to say the least.

Was Utada 10 years old when she wrote the lyrics to this song, btw? Jesus.

Ayu is 36 and STILL writing lyrics like this.

Anyway, the production is more polished than XOXO for damn sure. I'm really picky about melodies and I feel they did a great job transforming the song. The original melody sounded drab to me and I wondered how they could ever make it sound good, but I think the problem was that Hikkis version didn't have much going on OTHER than the melody during the chorus. It was just like a light dry and soft techno-esque beat. Ayus version uplifts the melody by adding in more harmonization, which works wonders.

I know it's based off the preview but Lelio is really the only other track that can hold a candle to this. Terminal needs more voice editing, Angel needed an entirely different vocalist (actually, no matter who was to sing that chorus would've still sounded like a whiny moaning bitch).

Also, I'm kinda regretting listening to the preview cause it's constantly on loop inside my brain.

Really? You can tell that much about the production and how it compares to XOXO from a 15 second clip recorded from a TV?
