the verse melody actually reminds me a bit of the verse melody in HEAVEN. both exude a kind of gentle warmth.

The GIFT is like the less-Japanese and less-dramatic cousin of HEAVEN in that case. It has that kind of weird structure and buildup.

I don't feel the urge to skip The GIFT in the preview video so that makes it a pretty good ballad in my book. :yes I love the piano intro too. The only disappointing factor of the song is that the rest of it doesn't follow along that melody.
