You're right: spaying/neutering usually means better behavior and overall quality of life. It also helps prevent certain cancers; i.e. testicular and ovarian cancers and mastitis/breast cancer. The younger the pet is when they are "fixed," the better chance they have to avoid having these cancers. Also, it prevents roaming, spraying/marking, and the pet going into heat and bleeding, and ultimately, they aren't able to reproduce. Even if you kept your unfixed animal inside all the time or they only go outside on a leash, there is still a good chance they can race out the door or get away from you if they are in heat to find a mate and then, it's too late. I don't know about all countries in the world, but here in the U.S., animal overpopulation is a severe problem. It's why we have TNR (trap-neuter-release) programs for feral cat communities; to try and control the population of unwanted animals. Our shelters are always full and so many homeless animals are put to death because they can't find forever homes.

So for some of us, yes, it's shocking that Ayu doesn't have her dogs neutered. Yes, she could be using them for breeding, but I really don't think she does. She doesn't have time to be a serious breeder, unless it's something she's thinking of taking up in retirement. :laugh

That's so sad. I missed that post. I thought my cat was dying from kidney failure on the weekend (had a blocked bladder turned out) but it is one of the worst feelings when you think your pet is really ill.

I think she tries to spend with dogs as much time as she can now. At twitter she sounds a little sad. Maybe not so many chances to survive...
