I think we all need to hope this hits 150k and we should be lucky. That's a big drop. I'm assuming the first day numbers were a lot of the fans buying the special editions (2 DVD version and photo book edition.). Now all we're left with is mostly casual buyers.

Wow the sales are low. Very low. I'm quite supriced. No. Very supriced. It's really not fair. But the J-pop queens are for the moment less popular than those k-pop groups.
|
LMAO I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks JAPONESQUE wasn't all that epic like people portrayed it.

I wonder how the album is doing download wise?? |
number 3 on itunes, I dunno about the rest,I am not too concerned
(and of course Brave is the most popular track) her sales are low because of her labels action but even so in two days she outsold 3/4 of the other Jpop females so her career is no danger, really every Kuu fan I know loves the hell out of this album XD I dunno Kuu for me gets better each year |
Wow, those sales are surprisingly low, to be honest. I thought album would read near 100K sales today but no. I hope JAPONESQUE won't become a flop though because that's when I'll get angry. D: JAPONESQUE is a awesome album and deserves better sales. ;__;

^ actions? From what I understand they did a lot.. Posters, CM's... tie-ins?
What else is there? Promotion on the net |
Quote:
Well at least CDJapan shipped my copy yesterday. (CD+2DVD) |
she had zero tie-ins for this album,no promotion till the week before or even cms,no live performances , lol they didn't even feature her new album on their youtube page
trucks and poster are standard for almost most Jpop releases, like Crystal Kay and she barely sells I mean avex acted really slowly but even then they haven't done much for this album safe release it anyway I am not pressed about sales, they don't reflect anything on the album, if she recorded pop perfection she would still get these sales |

They clearly did put a lot of effort into production though. I mean, the photoshoot was amazing, the arrangement and overall quality of the music was great (despite the songs themselves being blah), they went all out with the packaging and having high quality PVs for every single track... So what exactly was avex's strategy here by having so little promotion? They basically shot themselves (and Kumi) in the foot by putting ALL THAT EFFORT into this album and then hoping it would sell itself. What a bunch of idiots. avex should no by now promotion can do wonders - I mean, look at how much the promotion for BEST ~first things~ and the 12 singles project affected her career. Not saying she could ever attain that kind of peak again since she was very FRESH yet, but she still has the power to impact the market with promo. But I guess it is hard to say without the Japanese perspective. |

Hey guys, I'm not so much in the Koda stuff, mostly, I'm an Ayu listener, but I feel I just have to say that: this album is absolutely epic! Each and every song. I'm not so into dance and r'n'b music, but when I listen to BBB I feel like dancing and screaming, no matter, where I am. It's funny, I couldn't even listen to her recent singles, but when I found VIP, KO-SO-KO-SO and even Ai wo tomenaide it felt just like a little discovery for me. This album is a great mix of rhythm, melody, beat, sex and dance. It'll warm me up during the cold winter. Definitely!

almost 60k in two days, so probably she will surpass 100k at the end of the week. Still holding #1 spot (what exactly means that is the best selling album of the week. Yeah, it's pretty obvious, but it seems there are people that needs to hear that to realise) two of her singles this year reached the top of legal downloads on chaku-uta (Poppin' love for two weeks). Her last concert in Tokio Dome was sold out (Fantasia), and it was just some months ago. Do you REALLY think that she will think that she has to quit from the music market?? Obviously there's a lot of work on JAPONESQUE, and she deserves better sales, but be realistic guys, she's still strong in the music industry. There are lots of musicians with lots of talent that NEVER will reach the marks she's doing nowadays. And forget her peak, it won't happen again, but it's still nice how 10 years later since her debut she's still capable to put her album on the top of Oricon. |
Yikes on the sales. I do like this album overall. I appreciate that she tried some different things like the acoustic tracks, but my favorites are the more "generic" club beats like Escalate.
Tracks 1-5 are all very strong. This first part of the album is great. Tracks 6-10 are rather weak, EXCEPT for "In The Air", which I love to bits. The rest of the album is good, except I don't like "ai wo tomenaide" or "All for You". Her english isn't all that great on most tracks, which surprises me a bit, because I felt like she had improved. I might like Deja Vu better, but this album is certainly nothing to pass up. It's too bad the sales are so low. |

I've already seen all JAPONESQUE pv's in HD. Some of them are way better to see on huge screen and with good definition. No man's land and Slow for example, epicness! And Brave is sooooo wonderful! Even ESCALATE in HD is awesome. Boom boom boys is even better, but All for you is my fave, so cute the ending, she's so thankful with her fans!!
|
Her sales are absolutely ok!
She will sell about 100k within the first week, and so far the sales are about the same , just a bit less, like Dejavu. I'm so happy actually, cause I expected even less than that! And like somebody already mentioned, she's still outselling most of the other female solo acts out there. What did you guys expect? Why are you crying? I totally can't understand you right now. Of course I am worried about the sales of JAPONESQUE, I did think it would do a little better, but considering there has been no lives yet or very little TV promotion, it's doing OK! And to be honest, I want to see what the digital sales are, as Kuu seems to be a stronger digital seller, I think. I don't believe Kuu's sales will go up again, the sexy-cute era is gone, But she is still getting #1, her concerts are still being sold out, and she still has a huge fanbase that loves her. She also is moving to a stage in her life where music will not be her main job anymore, shell have a child to raise now. BUT her music IS improving over the years, as she in finding more inspiration. I mean, JAPONESQUE is awesome, so I have high hopes for the next album! I just want her to make good music. :heart |
Quote:
|
Well, even though the sales aren't as high as we wished, it doesn't really matter because the most important thing is the music itself. I also believe that Kuu isn't really doing this for the money. I can't imagine her even thinking that way, she just isn't that kind of a person imo. :)
JAPONESQUE's pure perfection and that's all I need to know. <3 |
To be honest, I don't think it's just to do with bad sales in Japan any more, I think for both Kuu and Ayu, their sales are declining because, as much as I don't wish to say it, people are not as interested in them now as they used to be? Not that they don't love them but, I think Kuu and Ayu have always kept their old style and have become more like national treasures now, like Madonna and Christina aguilera (only comparing based on fame and sales). I say this because despite the declining sales for Kuu and Ayu, Namie isnt declining at all, and she's been around longer than both (1995). If you look at her sales, she's selling more each year with albums, and tends to fluctuate between selling the same or selling more with her singles. Namie is still very much in fashion, I think. Her recent single has done very well.
I think if Kuu were to look at the most recent of who and what is in fashion, and based her sexy style around that, she would be of more interest. I mean, when Namie came back in 1998, between 200 to 2004, her sales declined heavily, but when she re-invented herself in 2005 with 'PLAY' as the hip-hop queen, her sales have gone up ever since, never to the peak of 1999 and below, but since 2000, Namie's album sales have been climbing with each release. But I don't think Kuu will changer her image much. She does what she wants, what she feels she wants to do to grow as an artist, and as a singer. I think Kuu needs a new snap, and I think Kenji is kinda the muse that has begun to give it to her, but I think as long as she follows what goals she has, I think shell find a new one. It would be awesome to see Kuu kinda re-design herself for her comeback. I do sometimes feel that kuu styles herself quite older now sometimes, even though she's only 30. I adore how she is styled in Lay Down, she should keep a younger look like that! And sometimes I think she tends to go too modern electro-poppy like with Okay and Lay Down, which tends to be my least favourite fast tracks. I love electro-pop, especially in KPOP, I just don't feel like Kuu picks the right songs for her, sometimes? I do think when Kuu does good old R'n'B, Jrock, Dance like Driving, Taboo and ESCALATE, and Jpop that is really her forte. :) I would die if she did another cover album, put instead it's like a rock or r'n'b album instead of ballad. D: AND YAY FOR DRIVING HITS 4!! |
^ Actually Namie's sales are declining year after year..
if you look at her Best fiction era (Total Reported Sales: 1,840,088) to Past Future (Total Reported Sales: 575,501) to checkmate (Total Reported Sales: 484,336) Also though, even though Namie has been around longer, she almost flopped out with the album STYLE and I think it also helped that Namie basically reinvented herself... But I agree that Ayu and kuu really dont reinvent themselves very well.. they change, slightly, but it stiff the same stuff I believe... Also it doesn't help that they have totally saturated the market every since coming onto the scene.. (more kuu than Ayu however) |
Making of JAPONESQUE pic:

|
I'm kind of speculating that the lower-than-usual sales may be because some people are not aware that the release was actually pushed forward... Their minds still say 2/1, but the album is being released a week earlier to 1/25...
|
Quote:
You are right though. Kuu is my #1 fav artist of all time, and always will be. Ayu is also a old favourite of mine. But they do need to reinvent themselves. They've tried all sorts of different styles between albums, and different genre's, I think. But in terms of image, how they produce their albums and singles etc they haven't changed that much, in my opinnion. Like for example, I love every one of Kuu's albums, but when it comes to Kuu you can always tell what kind of tracks will always been on there. If you think about it, At least for UNIVERSE, Dejavu and JAPONESQUE, I would say (Even though JAPONESQUE is certainly a step forward in terms of songs and production) they have similar layouts in terms of songs, and genre, as well as production. There will always been a few cute songs and ballads, maybe 1-2 rock songs, then some dance and r'n'b. And while I LOVE about Kuu that her albums has a mix of genre, I think she has stuck to the same formula to produce her albums over the years. I think people have just come to expect it? I think what people need is a breath of fresh (sexy) air, and for Kuu to produce things slightly differently, like even in DEJAVU tour, she mixed up the setlist, so it didn't end on 'Walk' anymore, and it was an amazing show. I remember it fondly just because of that small change, and the fact she produced and sang it AMAZINGLY. I have to say though, I think JAPOESQUE is a good step forward, Kenji has been a good muse in a different direction, even though she's still stuck to the same formula. The production for JAPONESQUE's theme is probably one of the best if not the best for an album Kuu has done. I love the covers and the design, the production is top quality. I think if she can keep that, but just change how she produces or chooses her songs for the next album to something a little different, that would be awesome. :love And that's a good point, Bigtop... |
There are many reasons for JAPONESQUE low sales, and I agree with all your ideas. Especially what ayu_love said about her formula for albums, which imo is being the same since secret.
I dream of Kumi making a temporary unite with a band [BACK-ON would be the best one for many reasons]. This would add much more to her style and make her grow as an artist. Her voice is getting more powerful through the years, so I think that giving a bigger attention to her rockish side would be the best bet that they could do, and looks like she's already giving a try to it, looking at BBBoys, No Man's Land and even Poppin' love cocktail you can see a bit of it. Also, I think she's aware of this need of changes, and now that she's completed 10 studio albums, she will renew a bit her "Koda Kumi" image. She feels she needs to change, and as a proof she hasn't released a summer song like Lick me and 674 other similar tracks since 2010. I think she said it on a magazine interview, that she felt she should change her summer tracks style, and both tries [Lollipop and PLC] were quite successful. Next step is changing her ballads style now hahaha :D I'd love Kuu to release some songs like No way to say by ayu or Believe by Maki Goto. |

Most of those people aren't part of her staff! :laugh
They're the songwriters. Kuu always had western styled music and the matching image, but in the last years they adopted more and more western demos in her discography. |
I love her staff and songwriters, gives us such an interesting mix of sounds.
I personally was hoping for at least 100k in the first week. I think it will have a very hard time reaching 200k. Her sales decline like 20k every album lol And this album had little promo...and shes not very popular...She could always do much worse. |

splendid intro a couple of rockish songs a couple of cute songs a couple of dance songs a couple of r&b songs And believe me, I really love JAPONESQUE, because this time, that formula is nice (So Nice hehe) 'cause the songs are good! But despite of that, the image is nearly the same as Secret was, and that doesn't produce a big impact in people anymore. |
kumi doesn't deserve these sales )=!
|
Yes I love Kuu songs , maybe because i love everything she does , but she really has to change her style leaving the ero-kakkoi because it's not working anymore , And the jpop really changed by years it's not like it what used to be , and most of successful artists in 2005 and backward aren't that popular now , so it's amazing that kuu still selling decently
Kuu has to change to the style that works in Japan and make it more Kuu-ish ! , I really hope that Kuu try to work on something new during her break . |
I'd be worried about her popularity if it got to the stage where she had to do Dejavu style hall tours.
Last year was an 'experiment' by her to be closer to fans ... and a load of dates had to be added, and even then I'm sure more could have easily sold. She has a core fan base who'll buy the album and then go buy tour tickets and as she is with that fan base could still easily pull off a multi-date arena tour. When it get's to the stage that she can't sell out a 1000 seat hall then I'd be worried with these 'losing popularity' theories. |
Well, yesterday's sales dropped to 5,460
around 75k in total.. I guess it'll be hard to reach 100k in the first week, except the the sales boost on the weekend.. o well, as long as her concerts are still in demand.. |
Quote:
|
Ayu and Kuu have formulas that they tend to sick to now and days. Back in the day they experimented more, but now that they've been around for a while I guess they have "found themselves". This could be because they are just getting old, or perhaps they know who they are and know their strong points. If they wanted to, or avex wanted to, they could re-market them in the vein of 'idols' like high selling AKB48 or something. Maybe Kuu will have a "comeback" too like Namie and do some sort of reinvention and become Best 1 & 2 era popular.
|
Regardless of the formula, I'm loving JAPONESQUE.
Now my favorite Kuu album!!! I always liked bits from all her albums but never a majority of songs like this album.. there are only 2 or 3 I'd skip or play less often. The album just runs so smoothly!!! And the production is wonderful!! |
I love the kodas formula. I even love her concert formulas. You always know she has her specific sections, but you never know what shes gonna do....
|
I think Everyday is the only song I would skip on a regular basis

to whoever said she needs a change, I partly agree. then I partly don't. I like Kuu for whatever she is, no matter how she looks, and what she writes and wants to express or whether her songs are somehow outdated I just love her personality, I love her independence, determination, and some really risky attitude. that's the aspects of Koda Kumi I do not want to change for music, I think she could create her new style herself. her music has always been too westernalized, I believe, for both us and the Japanese. and look - there are so many Western composers. but I wish she'd keep some r&b electro & ballads but maybe work with japanese producers/musicians more, why not? maybe it will bring a bit of change? Miliyah Kato sells more than Kuu, I love them both, but it seems a bit surprising. the sales are dissapointing. I'm worried for Kuu |
I hope Kuu doesn't change,if she wanted to be a successful solo artist rn
she would have to sing ballad after ballad after ballad, like Kana,Miliyah and JUJU they are nice but overall are a bit boring and safe those cups are super cute, maybe Kuu can do a re-cut single to boost the sales when she comes back even though that is super rare |

My favorite part of BBB <3 |
Ill put my POV on the declining sales etc.. not to be replied to or asking for more inputs just wanted to state my ideas :)
Spoiler:
Im not saying I love every every song from her but majority yes :) So I will still be here if shes starts releasing like american artist..an album every like 3 years haha! (im also buying everything ive missed in the past 4 years :) so im gonna be set till she gets back ) |
I just want Kuu to be Kuu, Kuu to do Kuu and Kuu to make Kuu happy. I don't care if she sells 1 album if she doesn't care. If she's happy, I'm happy, whatever her style is. So long as she doesn't get her ass dropped.
|
Well i never wanted kuu to change her self for few more copies , I just see why don't she change what works there and make it Kuu-ish
|
I don't think Kuu should ever change herself, you should always be true to yourself. But I just think she should shake-it-up a little more! Such as maybe changing the way she usually produces her albums and singles, etc. I would love for her to do more in depth stories in her PVs like Love Me Back Album ver. and BBB PV's, like she used to do for 99% of her PV's in the past. I also hope she can style herself a bit more girly, even though I know she's going for the mature look, which I love, I kinda would like to see her do some younger girly stuff too? Which is why I love the styling in Lay Down PV and her curly hair in Love Technique PV, it made her look just as young as from the 2006 era. A good mix of both young and girly and sexy and mature!
Everybody's knows how much I love Kuu and she has been the only thing I listened to at one point, but I feel even for an artist you love, you shouldn't feel like you can't say some criticism if you feel it. Just because it's criticism doesn't mean you're being negative. I would love to be able to say these points that I think would help Kuu grow as an artist, and make her work even more awesome than it already is. Ohe ohe oh! Shake-it-up tonight! :D Now I have an urge to go watch all of Kuu's old PV's. |
she does get styled to look way less pretty than she could be. especially her hair. they make it do gross sometimes and it can make her look So Nice. obsessed with her hair in Lay Down and Ai wo Tomenaide.
|
I think that all singers have periods in their careers that seem "stale" and predictable it's called a "rut" and everyone goes through one from time to time. I mean after all you can't be innovative all of the time. The album still did really good on the charts #1 probably for the week- so what if it didn't sell as much as the last or that the songs aren't doing good on the digital charts right now, lets just appreciate the new album and stop trying to find things to complain about plz.
|
I think a lot of people's main concern is that they don't want Kuu to fall into the BoA/Crystal Kay/BENI/Ai Otsuka, etc category.
|
man these sales are depressing, bad, sad and whatever, but no good at all. it's seriously one of her best albums in her whole career.
got my copy from CD Japan a few days ago, listenin to the album non stop since than. ****ing amazing. I think it's gonna beat Kingdom for me. and it's my #2 fav al by Kumi. Spoiler:
ps: someone deserves a good slap for the weakest track on the album. Yes HIRO I'm looking at you with your Everyday. :shakehead and who did this amazing photoshot? Kazuyoshi Shimomura. so u can't blame Ayu's duck face on him. this guy is a real pro. |
Yeah, idk. When AKB started selling millions, I stopped caring about Japanese sales.
I think Im fine if koda went the way of Beni or something, she'd probably have a lot more input for many things. And I dont think we can compare her to Miliyah, I think people forget that miliyah is an incredibly successful model...I never even thought about her as a singer first lol I can see koda going the way of Ai Otsuka...people used to call her the next Ayu :/ Anyway, who knows what will happen. If this is the end, at least she went out totally awesomely lol, sales or no sales. |

hsienko, I so agree with you.
I mean, what's this drama all about? The last years her current album always sold less than the one before. So far JAPONEQSUE is doing the absolute same route. With the exception of Namie, every female solo artist doesn't strike with her sales anymore. Miliyah Kato had some nice ones with her Best album, but her last single just sold 5k. Kana Nishino still has good sales for her albums, but she had her peak in 2010 already and since then her sales are falling as well. And she's a fresh face for people. Ayu sells less and less with every album as well. Though Kuu's falling faster, that's true and a pity. To make it short - it's a trend for female solo artists, no matter how good they are. Also last year not one album, not even from AKB48, Arashi or EXILE, was able to hit the million mark. And we all know how static the yearly single chart 2011 looked. Yeah it is sad - but for the whole music market in Japan. And nobody knows how it will end. And for recochoku - actually the album songs are doing good compared to e.g. Dejavu's. We don't know yet if Brave is able to go the same successful route like Aitakute last year. But overall the album songs do better than last year. Sales for today: 2 *7,407 倖田來未 Estimated total so far: 84,691 |
I want to be a positive fan and believe Kuu will rise again someday. Maybe she has that Namie "unpopular era" but I think she might get back to the top one day. It would be so cool if female solo artists became amazingly popular. *__* I'd like to see the second peak of Ayu (it would've been too awesome to be her fan during 2000-2002) and Kuu~ 8D

BoA had such a future laying in front of her, but suddenly she switched to boring ballads/repeptitive 294704837 millions of poppy songs. she got so boring and the quality of her music dropped hugely, followed by a huge drop in sales. at the time everyone thought that she'd be the second Ayu too in terms of success, idk what happened but her hard work didn't really seem to pay off afterwards. the same goes with Ai, "second Ayu", whatever, but the hype with her passed a way too soon as well. :shakehead so - no. I don't want Kuu to repeat this. Quote:
Ayu goes the same old path. that's very surprising to see, knowing how much versatile she was in the past. :thud Kuu is amazing, and she has many styles, and I do not understand the sales at all. maybe it is really a sign that to make the people ineterested again she should change the music or something a bit to get that fresh feeling. on the other hand, I just can tell "this is Koda Kumi style', she does have her own style.... |

Also debating about Kuu changing...
I think Kuu won’t change. Why should she? She doesn’t have to proove herself anymore and she said herself in an interview that she doesn’t care about sales anymore. Also she found herself as an artist – her diversity in music is what she is, it shows her personality! Maybe she will proove me wrong when she's coming back, but I do have the feeling she's absolutely happy now with her career and her private life. |
@tenshi no hane, thank you so much for your effort!

Yeah, thank you so much, tenshi!^^
Slow surprised me, those are some nice ones Kuu wrote. |
Yes, why should Kuu change? She's happy with the way she is. She's honest with herself and her music is "Koda Kumi". I don't think she really needs to change. Of course, after the eargasmic No Man's Land I wonder if she'll do a rock album one day, but she'd still be Kuu. :)
And thanks for the translations, tenshi. <3 All for you made me cry. It's so beautiful. ;___; <3 |
