Imagine if she started working with clearance clarity (Tina sawayama’s producer)

280301 12th February 2021 09:59 AM

Ayu has nailed ethereal vibes throughout the span of her career. forgiveness, voyage, Free & Easy, walking proud, HEAVEN, Secret, BALLAD, Story, Shape of Love, You are the only one, etc. I definitely think it's a sound she should continue to embrace, as opposed to her run of the mill ballads (some of which I do like, but agree with others on the forum who describe them as samey).

Still waiting on a studio-version of her Haru Yo Koi cover. T_T

I've always wondered how Ayu would do with those sounds, I think I'd love to hear something like this!

Reading everyone's comments, I kept thinking 'oh YES that would be good too', which makes me think I would just love something very diverse.

I don't know why but NEXT LEVEL came to mind - it is by no mean my favourite album of hers but there just seems to be a variety that even RnRC didn't manage to achieve - bubbly pop, rocky numbers, whatever LOVE'n'HATE was, ballads, ...

I just remember listening to it for the first time and being like 'oh wow I guess it that kind of album now'.

The 'drought' (I know, very relative and I am NOT complaining, I have a million albums to listen to again in the mean time) used to make me think any content would be good news, but seeing how quickly I became tired of Ohia no Ki and how uninterested I am so far in Pray for you, I just hope that whatever album comes next has some good variety so I can be sure there is something to cater to my taste.

Toniayu123 12th February 2021 01:16 PM

Imagine she start making a new album lol At this point I’ll take anything. I really hope we get to see a full album someday. I don’t know what to expect, but probably a varied album. Some rock, some pop, some ballads... if you think about it, all her albums have that in common. Even colours.

I know she's a pop singer but someday I'd love to see her commit to a rock album. But that is truly just a dream.

That's cute! But I feel like the (miss)understood covers are a cultural reset tbh lol

Her most rockish era from her was GUILTY imo, but it falls flat listening to it nowadays. I'd like to hear a more mature take of that type of sound.

honestly that's such a better cover that more effectively conveys the misunderstood-ness(?) that she meant! your cover art has honestly been amazing. I loved the masked covers you did a while back, and your current avatar is just perfect reaction material :luv2

as for (miss)understood, I didn't like the covers in the beginning, but they somehow grew on me and I liked them for their weird idiosyncrasies now lol, especially after reading that interview where she revealed why she liked these shots (particularly the awkward smile on the CD-only cover).

ˆ Didn't knew but it is said that can live for around 20 years!

Ashen Twilight 16th February 2021 01:03 AM

That is a very long time! Especially when you put it in the perspective of her dog being around since almost her debut. Choko has been with her through a lot of major life moments for Ayu so I can only imagine how hard this must be for her.

what does everyone think of Angel's Song? I've never taken to it, to be honest. I've listened to it a good number of times, but it doesn't really stick.

The music video is totally weird too, though of course it's pretty funny (not completely for the right reasons.) I guess for me the best part of the PV is her beautiful brunette hair.

Angel’s Song pv is so weird!

In a way, it’s the combination of being absolutely stunning looking and having quirky/whimsical elements that defined peak ayu’s artistry. Her stuff nowadays generally lacks those weird elements, which can make the materials less addictive.

tokyoxjapanxfan 22nd February 2021 01:22 PM

Angel’s song is one of my top favorite songs lol and I’ll continue to defend it haha

It’s happy and energetic and always puts me in a good mood and it’s the one song I’ve yet to experience live lol. She’s performed it at the same tour I was going to but when I went it was switched out, or switched in after I already went. Or it’s at the one CDL I skip to travel. It’s so elusive! :p

Probably the only song of hers I can't listen to :laugh I never been really fond of her "cute" songs but personally that one in particular sounds like an "alvin and the chipmunks" discarded song, big skip for me lol

ANGEL'S SONG is probably my least fave song lol The MV is also just wtf but it is entertaining.

I didn't like Angel for a long time but never minded Last Angel. I couldn't really appreciate the sound of Angel when it came out but I like it a little more as time goes (the CG was just never good for the MV though).....I guess "Angel" is a slightly cursed song title to me haha

It seems interesting though!
I’m not as optimistic about jpop being bigger than kpop but well, it’s nice to see some foreign backing of the Japanese music industry haha.

Give Avex money plz.

Edit: What Japan does have going for it is a strong rock/singer song writer scene, which always come back into style. It’s just a matter of time I suppose haha.

Somehow it managed to open for me in full. Here you go
Spoiler:

K-pop has become a global sensation, with acts like BTS and Blackpink amassing fans far beyond Asia.

J-pop—which ranges from the electronic synth sounds of YOASOBI to the pop-punk anthems of One OK Rock and catchy rock ballads of LiSA—will be even bigger, AEG Presents is betting.

Anschutz Entertainment Group’s concert promotion giant is teaming up with Japanese entertainment conglomerate Avex Entertainment Inc. to spread J-pop wide and further expand the Asian market for U.S. artists. The two companies have formed a new joint venture, AEGX, to pool resources and local expertise on developing artists, venues, festivals and global touring.

Japan has the second-largest recorded-music market in the world, thanks to avid fans who snap up multiple copies of vinyl and CDs. Yet 90% of revenue in music sales is generated by Japanese artists, according to Avex.

The rise of streaming, however, has broadened musical tastes in Japan and beyond, executives say. J-pop’s share of all plays outside Japan jumped 117% from January 2019 to January 2021, according to Spotify Technology SA .

“Streaming has kicked down the borders of music discovery and acceptance on the world stage,” says AEG Presents Chief Executive Jay Marciano. “It’s made music borderless.”

K-pop acts like BTS and Blackpink—which AEG helped break into the U.S.—provide a blueprint for how non-English-speaking artists can amass global appeal. (BTS had the world’s sixth-highest-grossing tour in 2019 at $170.3 million, according to Pollstar, with the seven-member Korean boy-band notching in between the Rolling Stones and Bon Jovi.) Now Japan is starting to look outward as fans are discovering artists from all over as they come online with streaming.

“For many years Western artists have come to Japan and there have been many successful events with big artists, but not a lot of Japanese-audience artists going out to a global audience and performing really large events around the world,” Avex Chief Executive Katsumi Kuroiwa said in an interview, adding, “we believe now it’s time for these artists to go around the world.”

Started in 1988 as a dance-music label, Avex has grown into the largest entertainment company in Japan, with music, artist and talent management, concerts, events, merchandising, fan clubs, anime, and a music- and video-subscription service. It has championed J-pop stars like One OK Rock, Kumi Koda, Ayumi Hamasaki and Pikotaro, and is betting it can secure more Asian artists’ touring rights in Japan with the new partnership.

Breaking foreign-language artists into the West presents challenges. BTS, the biggest of the K-pop groups, has sold out stadiums stateside, but lacks the radio play typical for big mainstream acts, despite impressive streaming and sales numbers and its avid fan “ARMY.”

AEG’s bet on Japan’s importance to the future of live music comes as all corners of the music industry are scouring the globe for growth. Streaming services are bringing new markets online; labels and publishers are expanding their footprint outside the U.S., signing local artists and songwriters around the world, in a race to maintain market share. Spotify on Monday unveiled plans to launch in 85 new markets across Asia, Africa, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America.

Superstars like Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran have long played in Japan, typically stopping for a show or two in Tokyo and Osaka en route to or from Australia. It’s a market only the biggest acts can afford to visit, but it’s also a wealthy one, with fans willing to spend on concert tickets, says AEG.

AEG’s Mr. Marciano envisions tapping Avex’s local expertise to help U.S. artists big and small build a Japanese base and make the country a 15-city leg for tours. The island nation, smaller than California, could grow from under $50 million in revenue to a $200 million market annually for AEG in the next five years, estimates Mr. Marciano.

Both companies see opportunities to tack their artists onto the other promoter’s tours to attract new fans—an up-and-coming U.S. artist could open for a J-pop group in Japan, and J-pop stars could support a Western artist stateside.

That is in addition to the hundreds of slots on AEG’s 27 festivals across North America and Europe, including the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. In 2019, the last year before the pandemic put the festival on hold, Blackpink performed their first ever full-length show in America there before starting their U.S. tour.

Performing live remains essential to building artists’ careers—and businesses.

“It’s not enough to hear the music, you need to see the artist,” says Mr. Marciano. “That is what turns a fan of a song into a fan of an artist.”

The companies also plan to partner on opening new venues and festivals.

Before Covid-19 struck, the concert industry was on track for its best year ever in 2020. Global revenue from live shows rose to $26.1 billion in 2019 before tumbling to $6.5 billion in 2020, according to Midia Research, an industry data provider. Although the industry will go more than a year without staging any major events, executives, analysts and investors say they expect pent-up demand to make business bigger than ever when concerts resume.

The “when” question is a big one. While some sporting events have hosted limited numbers of fans, relying on broadcast and sponsorship rights to counteract lower ticket sales, concerts don’t make financial sense at partial capacity, live music executives say.

Mr. Kuroiwa, speaking through an interpreter, says he’s hopeful the Summer Olympics, scheduled for July in Tokyo, will restore confidence in live events. The Avex CEO estimates the concert industry in Japan will be back to 50% to 70% of its pre-pandemic business in 2022.

Mr. Marciano said that, while arena concerts remain a further out possibility, he’s hopeful AEG will be able to open its more intimate clubs and theaters—which host hundreds to thousands of fans—in most parts of the world by this fall.

tokyoxjapanxfan 28th February 2021 03:56 AM

Oh thanks!

It’s definitely interesting to see how the Japanese music industry is viewed around the world.

I love that they used Ayu as the example on the article! I hope that jpop does make a comeback in popularity. Jrock is pretty palatable to Western music fans so I think there is a possibility.

Evolution7/4 28th February 2021 10:22 PM

i just watched the Paris Hilton documentary and I totally forgot how much of Ayu's extravagant style especially in the mid/late 2000s was modeled after Paris. There were points were I got deja vu to Ayu!
Also I would LOVE Ayu to do one of these kind of documentaries. I know she did the M book to give a more "distant" look into her life and past, but a revealing, "unproduced" down to earth documentary with Ayu being filmed and interviewed would be such a lovely gift for fans and something which the general public could get a better understanding of her. I think she could still do that without filming her kids.

This is such an experience! So good!

What I particularly love from her a nation performances is that, because she doesn't get that much time for wardrobe changes, she sometimes mix genres with visuals - rock n' roll (sometimes sexy) outfits for emotional ballads like HANABI, or beautiful long dresses for upbeat songs with dance movements. Visually much more interesting and less cliche than some of her typical arrangements during concert tours IMO

Lol have you seen Vox Lux? They poke fun at this in the final pop concert scene. The director spoke about how he always notices random words being flashed across the screen at pop concerts and wanted to include that in the film.

wooow she's looking amazing here!

shame on me, I wasn't feeling the same way back in 2013. now when I'm in my 30s too I find her looking gorgeous!

Katsuyuki012 12th March 2021 10:48 PM

I like the way she looks in the last few photos but that make up + hair combination where she has the red lipstick really didn't do her any favours imo. Something about the hair is just... off.

BlackSilence 14th March 2021 01:58 AM

^it's very yellow because of the flash, i think that's why, although it's also just very casual, not done while the make-up and her dress is far from casual. Although i thought she looked great then, she does look great.

tokyoxjapanxfan 14th March 2021 10:25 AM

Load of the shugyo came on randomly and I literally forgot this existed lol.

Next Level’s interludes are so great!

Aderianu 14th March 2021 06:48 PM

Do you think Ohia no ki will be included in the next album, or it's A Ballads exclusive?

Toniayu123 14th March 2021 06:54 PM

^ I’m honestly wondering the same (if we get any new album at all lol). Everything is possible, but a part of me thinks both ohia and Haru will be on a next album somehow...

truehappiness 14th March 2021 11:45 PM

I assume new album will have Haru like You & Me was on LOVE again... and maybe the making of will be there.

Katsuyuki012 15th March 2021 01:26 AM

I think Ohia has a good chance of appearing on the next album. Not sure about Haru Yo, Koi since it seems more like the song they'd want to keep as an A BALLADS 2 exclusive.

AndyF 15th March 2021 01:34 AM

It could end up as her TROUBLE 2.0 "album"

Dreamed a Dream + Pray For You + Ohia no ki + Haru yo + new song

lol

Toniayu123 15th March 2021 01:59 AM

^omg take it back. We DON’T want to accidentally manifest that lol A really possible scenario tho

truehappiness 15th March 2021 03:24 AM

MY ALL can also sneak on maybe. If she felt that way, lol.

OMG that would be so f'd up but the scariest part is that it is NOT impossible :headache

truehappiness 15th March 2021 05:53 AM

Yeah, I feel like an EP is more likely but we'll see!

M.A.X. 15th March 2021 11:55 AM

Hi guys I tried my first mashup between haru yo, koi from 2003 & 2020. I know there are some mistakes (I deleted the final file T_T) but I hope you’ll like this previous one. I loveee the 2020 version but 2003 is just a masterpiece for me, so I decided to make this mashup. Enjoy

barisuta53 15th March 2021 01:55 PM

^^^

I got a YouTube notification about that! It was pretty good.

YUKARI 15th March 2021 11:39 PM

^^

omg is it yours???

I've just randomly found it on YouTube. I love it! her voice at the original 2003 footage was just priceless. it's a pity they haven't made the studio version with orchestra back that time.

tokyoxjapanxfan 16th March 2021 01:08 PM

Been listening to Lindsay Lohan’s A Little More Personal album, and it gives me huge Ayu vibes? Like the structure of the songs and the instruments used? The lyrical content? “I live for the day” sounds like it definitely could’ve been an Ayu song lol. Even the cover is reminiscent of Ayu photo shoots lol.

I realize this was the trend of the time, but it really struck me haha.

I''ve always thought that, and Confessions of a Broken Heart has the same structure musically and lyrically as Memorial Address.

Btw, A Little More Personal has my favourite cover ever of Edge of Seventeen

OMG You’re right the 2003 version is just perfect. Her voice was so clear & powerful at this time. This is pure gold.

280301 17th March 2021 11:36 AM

Maybe a controversial opinion here, but I feel like Ayu probably could have imitated her 2003 vocal tone/approach to the current Haru Yo, Koi cover if she wanted to (of course, within current limitations - she would never have sounded 'exact'), but she clearly thought that a different tone/approach suited this arrangement.

I like it, it's definitely one of the better releases Ayu's had in a while. Saying that, I hope she changes up her arrangement team - I don't mind Nakano here and there, but greater diversity would really help to renew Ayu's career imo.

barisuta53 17th March 2021 01:05 PM

Here’s a controversial opinion: I don’t like the original 春よ、来い cover. I think it lacks power and I don’t like the arrangement. To me, the A BALLADS II version is superior in arrangement and vocal delivery.

That is controversial!! But hey, it's so lovely to see that this cover is being so well received - I do prefer the 2003 live version, but I also think that the clout that surrounds it is generated by musings of 'imagine if'. Her delivery isn't perfect in the 2003 live, yet it was still such a great performance that one would assume that a studio version would only improve upon it and iron out the creases. As there was never a studio recording (that we know of), and as the song was performed relatively early in Ayu's career, I feel like over time it gained a legendary status, an example of a missed opportunity in an era where Ayu really didn't seem to 'miss' so to speak.

With A BALLADS 2's release, what, three weeks away? it'll be interesting to see how Avex promotes the album from here on. It's clear they're trying to build hype.

Also, thank you so much M.A.X. for sharing your Haru yo, koi rebirth mix, I'll be playing it on high rotation!!! :love

mizuki-7 17th March 2021 05:29 PM

At first I found the 2003 version superior because obviously her vocal tone was better back then but now after listening several times the A ballad II version I think I prefer this one I feel more emotions in her singing and some sorte of maturity it’s difficult to explain. She lost a part of her beautiful tone but at the same time she improved other things.

Andrenekoi 17th March 2021 05:54 PM

Her tone and the amount of emotion she had on her voice back in the 2003 live makes it one of her greatest performances ever.

But there's a sense of maturity, of understanding more how to convey feeling through her voice, that makes the current version more subtle and more complex, in a way, and I really like that. There's some stuff that only make sense for you to produce once you reached a certain age, in the end of the day.

I feel similarity. I never really got into it. I knew if it’s iconic status but never sunk into it like most. Maybe that’s partially why I prefer the new version, but I also seriously think the new version is superior and better suited to the song itself.

Avex has launched "aNDLESS MUSIC LIVE", a 24-hour endless live stream of music videos with all of their artists like Ayu, Kumi, AAA, TFR, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra and more.

Happy 9th anniversary to Party Queen!!

Such a controversial album back then, but it had so many innovative things! The AR app was ahead of its time.

Also so much undeserved hate towards this album by many!

I agree, I wonder if it gets hate because people thought she was trying to imitate Koda Kumi. And hey, maybe she was, but some of the resulting music was really good. I think I'm the only one who likes the actual song Party Queen, though, ha ha!

Toniayu123 21st March 2021 07:00 PM

Seriously? It’s been 9 years already? I feel OLD. Party queen is awesome and so was the whole 2012 era with all its drama. I miss those times.
