the back of the "E=MC²" case is kinda risque. she's topless, and you can see most of her side bewb haha.

Would a name change to the Official Mariah Thread be good? She's a big star, so there should still be things to talk about even after E=MC2's release.

Yeah, my friend met her a few years ago and said she was a very sweet person. And I do think that she's honest about herself as well. I know I love her.

And I agree that the thread's title should be changed since this will definitely end up expanding beyond just this specific album, as it has at parts already.

MC was on American Idol. Anyone watch it? It's gonna air here in a few minutes, but I've already seen it on Daily Motion. Pretty boring, most of the contestants chose really boring choices like "Without You" and "Hero". So predictable. Why didn't anyone do "It's Like That"? I would've killed to hear David sing "Them chickens is ash and I'm lotion"!

Why would someone trying to showcase good vocals sing It's Like That? :laugh I think the song choices were good though. Here are my opinions on the performances:

When You Believe: Fantastic and in his own style. Loved it.
Without You: Extremely disappointing and cookie-cutter version of the song. Blah...
Vanishing: Best performance of the night.
Hero: Original cover, but the vocals were just alright.
Forever: Very good performance.
Always Be My Baby: Original cover that was entertaining, even if the beginning was a little dull.
I Don't Wanna Cry: Yeah, umm...no.

Anyways, so I bought the album today as well as the Adventures of Mimi Deluxe 3-disc edition at Circuit City. I'm so glad because I got the last copy of Adventures since it was only 11.99. I can't wait to watch it :D

I was just kidding, but really I was so bored with all the ballads. I would've liked to have seen songs like "Vision Of Love," "Someday," "Emotions," "Make It Happen," "Dreamlover, "Anytime You Need A Friend," "Fantasy," "Honey," "Heartbreaker," or "Shake It Off". Anything a bit more up-tempo would've been nice.

I thought you might have been kidding, but I wasn't entirely sure, haha.

I definitely agree with you about those songs though. It would have been much more interesting if they sang songs like those. And as interesting and different the Always Be My Baby cover was, I would have rather heard someone like Sayesha sing it to the original melody. Her voice and vocal trills could have made it her own even without a complete change in arrangement.

Mariah is going to perform on the AI result show, right?

I hope she performs a song off E=MC, but hopefully not Touch My Body.

Yeah, she'll be performing on the results show. I'm not sure what she's singing, but I would think it will be Bye Bye.

Halla 16th April 2008 04:30 PM

^ oh yeah, I forgot it's going to be the second single. probably the worst track off E=MC too :o

I chanced the thread title.

Cyria 16th April 2008 07:34 PM

Has anyone seen her two new Macy's commercials? I think they're both cute.

I guess I'll be checking out her AI appearance on YouTube. Looking at that song list, I hope the contestant did a good job on Always Be My Baby (my favourite).

Kaiouforever 17th April 2008 02:08 AM

I like Bye Bye...but of course, the songs on this CD don't seem to be quite as catchy as her last album; they take quite a few listens to stick to you, but they are nevertheless good.

Yepp, she did, and her renegade backup singer was in full force. Whoever it was screamed over top of Mariah during the same part that he/she did on Oprah, and MC seriously gave him/her a death look. Hilarious. I'm counting the days until we see MC with a new set of singers, lol.

Also, MC apparently debuted with 154,000 for the first DAY, and that's not even counting all retailers. Some places are predicting 600k for the first week!:

Quote:

Mariah Carey looks certain to debut at No. 1 on next week's Billboard 200 with "E=MC˛," based on massive first-day sales from the nine chains that report to Nielsen SoundScan's Building Chart.

Unweighted sales for the Island Def Jam album are at 154,000 units on the report released today (April 16). That's more than five times the total garnered by the current chart-topper, Leona Lewis' "Spirit" (Syco/J).

By comparison, Carrie Underwood's "Carnival Ride" (Arista Nashville) had first-day sales of 150,000 and wound up shifting 527,000 in its first week.

Billboard estimates that the merchants who report to the Building Chart -- Trans World Entertainment, Starbucks, Best Buy, Circuit City, iTunes, Border's, Target, Anderson Merchandisers, and Handleman Co. -- represent 80% of the U.S. retail market.

Carey's last release, 2005's "The Emancipation of Mimi," debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 404,000 copies.

Can Carey's New Island/IDJ Album E=MC˛ Hit 600k?

Everywhere you turn, Mariah Carey's in your grill.
She's on Oprah, two American Idols, in your e-mail, on your computer.

Mariah Carey's new Island/IDJ album E=MC˛, looks like it will sell over 500k, based on one-day sales reports, though last night's Idol appearance could send it even higher. Wonderers are wondering if 600k is within reach. Needless to say, it will be #1 next week by a wide margin.

Huaka 17th April 2008 10:46 AM

I love how you all tell me she sang me she sang Bye Bye when all three of us Hawaii people watched it at the exact same time :laugh

And I noticed her death look to the backup singer. I'm pretty sure it was the girl on the end toward the center of the stage. And there's no way she'll replace them all because that guy (I think his name is Terell or something has been with her for a LONG time as a backup singer).

And yeah, congrats to Mariah on the sales. I know I bought my copy. She'll obviously get number one this week. Bye Bye's really growing on me too. The entire album is just one big grower.

His name is Trey Lorenz and he's been with her since the very beginning of her career in 1990. You guys might remember him from the "I'll Be There" live performance on MTV Unplugged which became a single.

I think Mariah stuff in general seems to really grow on people. That's probably why this album might have the largest first-week sales of her career. She's always had huge-selling albums, but they never had very big first weeks because they were growers. Most of her stuff is like that for me too, seems okay at first and after a few weeks I am in love. I remember the underwhelmed feelings that I (and the world) had for TMB, but now it's such a huge hit and I love it too.

bondingo 18th April 2008 07:48 AM

Trey, that's what it was. I knew it started with a "T" and was that kind of name. Anyways, yeah, that's why there's no way she would ever replace him. They've been together so long that it just isn't going to happen. The girls though I'm not too sure about. I'm pretty sure she was giving one of them the dirty looks. I think it was a lot more blatantly obvious on her Oprah performance than on Idol though. I seriously lol'ed at the Oprah one.

dddaiyamondo 18th April 2008 12:10 PM

OK, totally off-topic, but I was looking at old pictures of Mariah and I am shocked how much she's changed. One of the rare cases I think plastic surgery was a good idea:

Before:

After:

fanmail 18th April 2008 06:35 PM

Wow, she's really changed a LOT. :tired

Huaka 18th April 2008 10:01 PM

Nah, I don't think she had plastic surgery, maybe breast implants. Ahaha, because they look HUGE now.

I know she's had her teeth done and at least her nose. She has this massive bulbous nose at the beginning of her career. Whoever her plastic surgeon is, snaps for him.

Cyria 19th April 2008 08:23 AM

I think she's probably had her nose and breasts done, but I'm not a plastic surgery expert. I'm not a fan of her current blonde hair though. The best she's looked to me was around Daydream, when she no longer had those curls but was still dark-haired.

dddaiyamondo 19th April 2008 11:13 AM

I honestly think she looks the best she ever has in her entire career right now. So skinny, great bewbs (lol) and gorgeous hair.

Kobayashiwoof 20th April 2008 10:45 AM

I bought E=MC2 today :D, I got the limited edition, it came with in a cardboard casing like Janet's Discipline LTD, and it came with a limited Ipod face cover. Which looks tacky lmao.

voltron 20th April 2008 09:49 PM

As for plastic surgery, I really don't think she'd get her nose done. That would greatly affect her breathing passages and as a serious singer, could affect her voice...I just don't think she'd do something so silly.

Have you seen her when she first first first came out? Her nose is nothing like it is now. And I know she got some dental work done too, in addition to her boobs.

voltron 21st April 2008 12:14 AM

I'm also not quick to pass plastic surgery judgments based on pictures of someone when they were 18-20 vs. 38. Her face is also a lot fuller in general than it used to be. Different angles, lighting, etc. all make a huge difference in appearance.

Actually a lot of people were speculating about her plastic surgery around 1993, and then again in 1997. Her entire face changed after the "Emotions" album, and then again near "Butterfly"'s release. And of course her boob job before "Rainbow."

MariahDaily.com has the numbers for E=MC2 coming in, and with 46.81% of retailers reporting, the album has sold 232,726. Since I can't do simple math, I have no idea what that means (lol) but I'm guessing it'll be 500k+. For comparison, The Emancipation of Mimi sold 404,000 copies in its first week.

Looks like I was wrong - I really thought it would do great but wouldn't beat Mimi's first week sales. I guess people are definitely back to loving Mariah.

truehappiness 22nd April 2008 08:53 AM

It could be that her songs are just really infectious. XD

All the artists nowadays seem to want to work with the same people :[

Halla 22nd April 2008 11:40 AM

^ i think E=MC^2 is just what people want from her. a lot of people liked her last album and this new one is essentially just more of the same. even the name implies that, "emancipation of the mimi to the power of 2" :yes

Mariah isn't really an innovator, but she has found her genre and people enjoy it so I guess she does not feel the need to experiment but rather does what she likes and what people want from her.

I think she was quite innovative in the 1990s, but not today. In the 90s she pretty much paved the way for pop/R&B singers to collaborate with hardcore rappers, especially with "Fantasy" in 1995 with Ol' Dirty Bastard. She really helped push that combination to the forefront of music. Today I think she's very comfortable with her style of music, although it almost seems like it keeps getting more and more ghetto with each album, lol.

In other news, looks like MC is doing well for herself in the UK, where she hasn't always had much success:
Quote:

Debuting at number 3 on sales of 34,769, E=MC² is Mariah Carey's highest charting album since 1997, when Butterfly fluttered to number two on first week sales of 28,758. The new album - from which introductory single Touch My Body reached number five last week - is Carey's third Def Jam effort, following 2002's Charmbracelet, which reached number 52, and 2005's The Emancipation Of Mimi. Despite Charmbracelet's low peak, it has sold 122,010, easily beating disastrous predecessor, Glitter, Carey's only (2001) Virgin album, which reached number 10 but has sold only 54,645 copies. The Emancipation Of Mimi has sold 621,352 copies.

Halla 22nd April 2008 01:03 PM

^ you're right, she's the one who invented the whole guest rappers on mainstream pop&Rnb.

but I think Mariah found her own style with her second album, it was her idea to work with C&C Music Factory on Emotions. and I think after like Daydream every album has been essentially the same with just updated with more current sound, except she gradually dropped the non-RnB ballad type of songs.
for example "Always Be My Baby" from Daydream is sorta like the '95 version of "We Belong Together" from '05.

Mariah Carey's E=MC2 Album Enters at #1, on Career-High First Week Soundscan Sales of 463,000!!!

'TOUCH MY BODY' - HER 18th #1 HIT, AND 79th CAREER WEEK AT #1 - SETS HISTORIC CHART RECORD, SURPASSING ELVIS PRESLEY's 17 #1's, AND TYING HIS ALL-TIME HIGH 79 WEEKS AT #1

'Bye Bye' is next - impacts at Pop, Rhythmic and Urban radio formats and is #1 most added across the board

APRIL 25th ON ABC TV: Mariah returns to Good Morning America for traffic-stopping live outdoor concert at New York City's Times Square

An unprecedented pre- and post-release campaign -- including appearances on NBC's Saturday Night Live, MTV's The Hills, BET's concert special, FOX's IDOL Gives Back and American Idol, and The Oprah Winfrey Show -- maximized exposure for international superstar Mariah Carey and her current smash hits, the #1 "Touch My Body" and #1 most added "Bye Bye," resulting in a massive #1 debut on the Billboard 200 albums chart for E=MC2 (in stores April 15th), weighing in with first week Soundscan sales of 463,000 units. E=MC2 also debuts #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart and #1 on the Top Digital albums chart (Mariah's first-ever #1 digital album debut with over 50,000 scanned!). E=MC2 represents the biggest first week debut of Mariah's career!!!

"Mariah's an inspiration, the true definition of a star," said Antonio 'L.A.' Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group. "She continues to amaze us with every incredible new album she creates. Now Mariah has added another plateau of success to what has become her virtually unapproachable track record on charts around the world. She proves beyond a doubt that with talent, ambition, and sheer force of will, all things are possible."

TV appearances continue this Friday, April 25th on ABC, when Mariah returns to Good Morning America for a live outdoor concert with New York's Times Square as her backdrop. Three years to the month since she first shut down traffic outside GMA's studios on 44th Street to celebrate the release week of The Emancipation Of Mimi, Mariah will once again welcome thousands of fans to the event, slated between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. She then hurries uptown for a guest appearance on Live with Regis & Kelly.

Mariah reached an historic career achievement earlier this month when "Touch My Body" became her 18th #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 - surpassing one of the most enduring chart records in Billboard history, Elvis Presley's 17 #1's. "Touch My Body"'s two weeks at the top marked Mariah's 78th and 79th cumulative career weeks at #1, which tied Elvis' long-standing all-time high of 79 weeks at #1, as calculated in Billboard. At the same time, Mariah is now positioned as the only active recording artist in the 50 years of the Hot 100 (which began in 1958) with the potential to surpass the Beatles' all-time high of 20 #1 hits.

"Touch My Body" took over the #1 spot with an all-time record-setting 286,000 debut week on the Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart. The video, directed by feature filmmaker Brett Ratner, and featuring a cameo by Jack McBrayer (30 Rock's Kenneth Parcell), stays in rotation on VH1, VH1 Soul, BET and 106 & Park, and FUSE; as well as #1 at Yahoo Music Video. "Touch My Body" also topped the AOL video charts for several weeks.

Clear Channel Online played a major part in the Mariah Carey promotion, simultaneously launching "Touch My Body" as it went to radio. The song was played over 400,000 times in one week and debuted at #1 on the On-Demand Chart. Tracks from E=MC2 were also featured in Clear Channel's Sneak Peak promotion a week before the album was released.

"Bye Bye" impacted across-the-board at Pop, Rhythmic, and Urban radio formats on Monday, April 21 and is #1 most added across the board.

Leading up to the release of E=MC2, "Touch My Body" was one of two songs (along with "Migrate") that were performed by Mariah last month on NBC's Saturday Night Live, hosted by Jonah Hill, the show to be re-run on May 3rd. Earlier this month, Mariah gave a special performance of "Touch My Body" and "We Belong Together" after the season premiere of the MTV reality series, "The Hills." The episode set a year-to-date record as the highest rated telecast on cable TV.

On April 9th, Mariah joined an all-star cast for the second annual "IDOL Gives Back" two-hour TV special, a music celebration raising awareness and benefiting various U.S. and international charities. The following Monday, April 14th, Mariah appeared as special guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, chatting with the host and performing "Bye Bye." The next day, as E=MC2 was released, Mariah began a two-night stint on American Idol, serving as musical mentor to that week's finalists on night one, and performing "Bye Bye" on night two.

"Touch My Body" was produced by Mariah Carey, C. "Tricky" Stewart, and fellow Island Def Jam artist The-Dream. Other guest producers joining Mariah on E=MC2 include Jermaine Dupri, DJ Toomp, Stargate, Will I Am, Bryan Michael Cox, Nate "Danjahandz" Hills and James Poyser. The album is executive produced by Mariah Carey and Antonio "LA" Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group.

The 11th studio album of her career, E=MC2 follows-up The Emancipation Of Mimi, Mariah's worldwide 10 million selling #1 album, which generated three Grammy awards (including Best Contemporary R&B Album), two #1 singles, and countless more honors during its 18-month stay on the charts. Released April 12, 2005, Mimi was an industry phenomenon for the mega-platinum award-winning superstar. Soundscan's biggest-selling album of the year, it brought total sales of Mariah's albums, singles and videos to over 160 million worldwide, making her the top-selling female recording artist in history.

• Mariah Carey crowns the Billboard 200 for a sixth time as "E=MC2" starts atop the tally with 463,000 -- her biggest opening week. It's also the highest sales week of the year, surpassing the 375,000 start of Jack Johnson's "Sleep Through the Static" in February. Finally, "E=MC2" marks the best opening week for any album since Mary J. Blige's "Growing Pains" started with 629,000.

• Carey is now tied with fellow divas Madonna and Janet Jackson for the second most No. 1 albums among female artists. Only queen bee Barbra Streisand, with eight, is ahead of the pack.

• "E=MC2" is the eighth debut at No. 1 in as many weeks on the fast-moving Billboard 200. It follows penthouse-bows from Jackson, Alan Jackson, Rick Ross, Danity Kane, Day26, George Strait and Leona Lewis.

• Carey's last album, "The Emancipation of Mimi," also landed at No. 1 in its premier week, moving 404,000. "Mimi" spent two weeks atop the chart, was the best-selling album in the United States in 2005 and has shifted 5.8 million units total... This is the first time Carey has scored back-to-back No. 1 albums since "Daydream" and "Butterfly" reached the top in 1995 and 1997.

• Collectively, Carey's albums have sold 50 million copies in the United States since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales data in 1991. She's the third-biggest-selling albums artist in the SoundScan era, trailing only Garth Brooks (67.8 million) and the Beatles (56.2 million).

^That is so awesome for her. Good job, Mimi. Hopefully she can hold the title for highest first week sales for a while!

Northerner 24th April 2008 06:42 AM

I'm really happy about the sales, this album deserves it. Of all the albums from big names in pop that have been released lately, Mariah's is the best. That new live DVD set that I impulse-bought at the same time I got "E=MC2" is pretty nice, too.

In fact, this album has made me remember how much I used to like her, and I've been having some great nostalgic moments listening to all of her old albums. :)

^Me too, I always forget her for a while, but whenever a new album comes out I listen to her whole catalogue again. I almost forgot how amazing her older stuff is.

She said in an interview that Love Story was likely the next single. But I think it's a better choice to do an upbeat song.

Mariah sang on GMA this morning, and it had some interesting results. Her backing track messed up during the first verse of "Touch My Body", and she got really pissed. Then it started messing up again during the end and she started singing "Stop singing my part, baby" but she was totally professional about it. Her perfs of "I'm That Chick" and "Bye, Bye" were amazing though. Here's the link that has pictures and the 3 videos:

It's debatable. But Mariah is definitely the most successful in the United States.

Halla 29th April 2008 01:17 PM

the best selling female artist of the world is either Madonna or Celine Dion, most likely Madonna since Celine isn't as popular among younger people she once was.
but it's hard to determine since a lot of sources are biased and the sales info isn't always accurate.

Mariah is the most popular in the US, but she lost a lot of popularity especially in Europe on butterfly to charmbracelet, until she made a huge comeback with EOM. she didn't do that well in the US either with butterfly to charmbracelet, her career in the US was going downhill until EOM.

TITANIC 29th April 2008 02:25 PM

Ohh IC...

what about E=MC2?
i think this album not very success like EOM

Halla 29th April 2008 03:06 PM

E=MC^2 is a hit already, but I don't think it'll match EOM in terms of success.

mostly because of E=MC^2 lacks the really strong single material EOM had, and they aren't really helping the situation with the single choices so far.

Actually, Mariah maintained her popularity in the States until 2001, because Butterfly and Rainbow were both very popular and successful albums. They both did over 10 million worldwide, and they both had two #1 singles. But I think I was wrong, Mariah isn't the biggest-selling female artist in the States. She surpassed Madonna with TEOM in 2005, but she is still slightly behind Barbara Streisand. Maybe she can take her over with E=MC2!

Rachel: Eighteen!

Mariah: Okay, it's MC, or whatever you want to call me dahling, and Ray-Ray, click in Shawntae and May-May but they're not here right now, so it's us. They just left. It's 2:45AM unless they're lying to me about my clock to try and get me places earlier [laughs]. Basically I'm pretty much an hour late everywhere I go!

Alright but this is a thank you message, and we gotta say thank you, thank you! Because we haven't even spoken this whole time 'cause I didn't wanna call and be like "Oh, OK, I just wanna get as many people to buy the record and make it go #1" and that is so not the "sit'ation" because you guys know that, c'mon Ray Ray, how much do I love them?

Rachel: She loves you guys, she does. You guys just don't know.

Mariah: You know I do, and the fact of the matter is you're absolute smash hit wonders, and I know you've been hearing me talk about it on the radio...

Rachel: A few of them know!

Mariah: A few of them know. I think all the ones who really, really, really matter -- which is everybody -- but the ones that we really know, they know that we love them. So anyway, we love you, this is your night! The pink yet lavender Empire State Building was kind of a stone groove smash hit wonder. So anyway, we can't thank you enough. I love ya, appreciate ya, and enjoy ya and will chat to you later! You got a two minute and twenty second message, it's gonna chopped up in half, but whatever! We love you! Buh bye!

true, each mariah album has sold several millions. but she was losing steam fast before EOM turned it around. her drops in sales are way bigger than just the general decrease in album sales in the industry.

butterfly sold only half of what the previous studio album sold, there was a notable drop in sales from butterfly to rainbow (especially on worldwide sales). and her career hit a low point on charmbracelet (didn't even chart in the top ten other than in Japan & US) which only sold like a 1/4 what the previous studio album sold. she got married last week or a few days ago to this person who was 11 years younger than her =\
crazy...
it....was a marriage in secret
here is the news report:

"Mariah Carey reportedly married Nick Cannon - an actor and rapper 11 years her junior - in the Bahamas this week after a whirlwind romance.

The New York Post says the pair wed in a secret ceremony attended by family and friends at Carey's house on the island of Eleuthera. The report cited a source close to Carey.

Latina.com, the website for Latina magazine, cited a source close to Cannon as saying the nuptials took place on Wednesday.

In Touch Weekly said Cannon designed a $US2.5 million ($2.6 million) ring for his new bride.

The reports could not be immediately confirmed.

Representatives for Carey and Cannon did not return emails or phone calls for comment.

- Reuters"

voltron 2nd May 2008 02:23 PM

I won't believe the marriage until I hear more from an official source. They're also reporting she didn't have a pre-nup and she is too smart for that. Plus, Mark Sudack has been her man for a while now...they just adopted a dog together not that long ago.

In a recent interview she spoke about one of her label/management team buying her a new ring for the success of the album.

I have a feeling this might be something to do with that Ashton Kutcher show where celebs trick the paparazzi. Or just has to do with the video they're working on for "Love Story."

Besides, it's just trashy places reporting it...Perez, E! News, the New York Post, etc.
