My friend just sent me this from Perez:

This has to be a bit of a disappointment for Madonna!

The Queen of Pop's new CD, Hard Candy, went on sale this Tuesday and it is expected to move between 275,000 and 300,000 copies its first week in America, which should easily put it at #1.

Good….but not great by any means!

Madonna's last CD, Confessions…, debuted to about 350,000 copies its first week.

AND, that was without much radio support for first single Hung Up.

The fact that radio has been behind M's new single, 4 Minutes, in a big way makes her expected debut for Hard Candy that much more disappointing.

Mariah Carey, on the other hand, not only sold about 475,000 copies of her new CD, E=MC2, but….that was also Mimi's biggest debut week ever.

Vinylfantasy 30th April 2008 11:39 PM

Just wait till her TV stint comes through, I'm sure she's gonna hit up Ellen again and The Today Show. Hopefully more if Liz comes through for us. :)

InorganicRosiel 30th April 2008 11:41 PM

That's the first good news I've heard. I hope this album underperforms, and she stays far away Timbaland/urban sounds for her next album.

bondingo 30th April 2008 11:49 PM

Yeah, I'm interested to see what she does in terms of promotion here in the US. I mean, Mariah's been whoring her album on pretty much every show possible, from Oprah to American Idol, and that's obviously been reflected in the album sales. Madge hasn't promoted Hard Candy on, ummm...anything. So I guess we'll see how the sales are affected once she begins to really promote the album.

4 Minutes (with Justin Timberlake)

The intro to 4 Minutes is so epic!

Give It 2 Me

Can't wait to see this on tour too when she has a full choreography dance!

dddaiyamondo 1st May 2008 06:55 AM

275k - 300k isn't bad at all, especially nowadays. Although it is a bit strange that she went down from COADF, which I thought had a much less popular first single. I expected a bit higher first week than COADF. And why did E=MC^2 have a higher first week than TEOM, when TEOM had both "It's Like That" and "We Belong Together"? The American public confuses me.

I read that she's scrambling to do more promotion, but why 106 & Park? Somehow I don't think she's got a lot of fans in the hip-hop community. I still find it weird when Justin Timberlake goes on that show. She should do Oprah like Mariah and Leona, although I guess you gotta schedule that sort of stuff way in advance, Oprah probably doesn't change her shows around for anyone.

Vinylfantasy 1st May 2008 07:45 AM

She's now scheduled to be on 106 & Park at 6 PM eastern time on May 1st. Don't forget to tune in!

Madonna is on track to net her seventh No. 1 album on next week's Billboard 200 with "Hard Candy," based on first-day sales measured by the Nielsen SoundScan Building Chart released Wednesday afternoon (April 30).

Unweighted sales for the Warner Bros. album from the Building Chart's panel of reporters through the close of business Tuesday, April 29, stood at 100,000.

Among all female artists, only Barbra Streisand has earned more No. 1s -- with eight. Currently, Madonna, Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson are all tied for the second most, with six apiece.

Late last year, Chris Brown's "Exclusive" posted a first day number of
107,000 and finished the week with 294,000. However, sources close to the Madonna project indicate that with much of "Hard Candy's" first-day figure driven by iTunes sales, its full sales week could end up closer to the range of 225,000-250,000.

Madonna's last studio effort, 2005's "Confessions on a Dance Floor," started at No. 1 with 350,000.

Billboard estimates the merchants who report to Nielsen SoundScan's Building Chart -- Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Circuit City, iTunes, Starbucks,Borders, Target, Anderson Merchandisers, and Handleman Co. -- comprise about 80% of all U.S. Album sales.

Leading the charge for "Hard Candy" is first single "4 Minutes," featuring Justin Timberlake, which peaked at No. 3 on The Billboard Hot 100 and spent two weeks at No. 1 on Hot Digital Songs. The download has sold 1 million copies to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan, including 185,000 for the week that ended April 27.

Madonna first rang the Billboard 200's bell when "Like a Virgin" reached No. 1 in late 1984. Since then, she's claimed No. 1s with "True Blue" (1986), "Like a Prayer" (1989), "Music" (2000), "American Life" (2003) and "Confessions."

She also owns a whopping five sets that peaked at No. 2 -- "I'm Breathless" (1990), "The Immaculate Collection" (1990), "Erotica" (1992), the soundtrack to "Evita" (1996) and "Ray of Light" (1998).

On the Wednesday Building Chart, Lyfe Jennings' new "Lyfe Change" (Columbia) was in second place with 25,000. Other new titles appearing in that preliminary list's top 10 include the Roots' "Rising Down" (Def Jam), Portishead's "Third" (Mercury), Def Leppard's "Songs From the Sparkle Lounge" (Island/UMe), Augustana's "Can't Love, Can't Hurt" (Epic) and Mudcrutch's self-titled album (Reprise).

MTV review of the Roseland Ballroom Prom Concert

NEW YORK — You’ve got to hand it to Madonna — she never does anything half-assed.

The Queen of Pop, whose album Hard Candy dropped Tuesday, pulled out all the stops at New York’s intimate Roseland Ballroom on Wednesday night (April 30), dazzling the packed-to-the-rafters crowd — including Fran Drescher and Rosie O’Donnell — with an energetic, fast-paced, six-song set that featured a guest appearance from Justin Timberlake for Madonna’s latest single, "4 Minutes."

It was an event better-suited for Madison Square Garden and one that these fans — many of whom probably had to call a sitter for the evening — won’t soon forget.

The pre-gig vibe was one of unadulterated excitement, with 45 minutes of candy-themed music (Bow Wow Wow’s "I Want Candy," New Edition’s "Candy Girl"), compliments of a DJ stationed center stage. Behind the expansive, five-platform stage, the cover image of Madonna’s latest LP flashed on the big screens. Madonna, wearing a skintight black suit and a lace top, was certainly punctual, taking the stage promptly at 10:04 p.m. ET, to thunderous applause, as the first bars of "Candy Shop" reverberated off the packed venue’s walls.

One segment of the stage rotated to reveal Madonna sitting on a gold-and-black throne, wielding a golden walking stick. Images of confections flashed on the television screens flanking the back of the stage. Madonna, along with her six dancers, gyrated in choreographed harmony to the sexy club jam. This performance, even if only 38 minutes long, was production-heavy, with a four-piece band and no fat. One song seemed to blend into the next, with Madonna saying very little to her adoring fans, who hopped on the opportunity to snap pictures of the pop icon with their camera phones as she strutted across the edge of the stage.

Next, Madonna strapped on an acoustic guitar, tossed back a swig from a champagne bottle and strummed her way into "Miles Away," a midtempo number about being far from home. Images of planes taking off and landing, airports and various locations around the globe were projected across the screens behind her.

The crowd cheered at the first few notes of "4 Minutes," which mimicked its video with a flashing countdown clock. After Madonna belted out the song’s first verse, Timberlake emerged from a rotating pylon, wearing a white jacket and black scarf. It was the high point of the evening, and the production value of the performance was arena-size.

Madonna paused for a moment to reflect on the talent she’s been able to work with lately, including Timberlake, Kanye West, Timbaland and others. "I feel like the luckiest girl in the world," she said, before dedicating her next number to her longtime fans — the ones she’d seen "sleeping on the sidewalk" the night before in line for tickets. She then played "Hung Up" from 2006’s Confessions on a Dance Floor, followed by the disco anthem "Give It To Me," with pink and green disco beams pulsating across the crowd. Madonna danced like a woman less than half her age, and her vocals were at their peak.

"Give it to me, New York," Madonna yelled. "I don’t see you people dancing up and down enough."

The stage lights were reminiscent of those at a Daft Punk gig, and that didn’t change during the night’s final song, "Music." Madonna started out at the very front of the stage, singing the opening a cappella, and was joined by all the concertgoers, who screamed in unison: "Music/ Makes the people/ Come together." As her dancers emerged from a faux silver subway car (destination: "Freshville"), she pranced across the stage, touching the dozens of outreached hands grabbing for her attention. The show ended with Madonna racing up the stage to the subway doors, behind which she disappeared.

And at 10:38, she was done. In and out.

My friend and I are seriously wondering how the crowd is gonna react when Terrenace and Roxy (the hosts) call her out. :laugh Are they gonna scream like crazy...or just clap with one person screaming in the background? :lmfao

When did Madonna have fame in the hip-hop community exactly? lol

Vinylfantasy 2nd May 2008 10:03 AM

She collaborated with 2Pac back in '94 on another version of I'd Rather Be Your Lover in addition to numerous R&B and hip-hop producers on Bedtime Stories and Erotica. Her work from early in her career was heavily influenced by the R&B sound at the time.

I guess, but correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the one and only time she had a top 10 song on the R&B charts in 1984? "4 Minutes" isn't even in the top 50 right now. I just don't see the point of doing 106 & Park. I wish she would've gotten exposure to an audience that would actually embrace her, on a show like American Idol or Oprah or Leno.

Like I said, she's only had one top 10 R&B hit, and that was 24 years ago, lol. It's not like she's ever been big in the hip-hop community, so I just didn't understand her choice to go on 106.

I was surprised that "Hard Candy" debuted with lower sales than "Confessions" in the US!
"Hard Candy" sold just over 280,000 and "Confessions" sold almost 350,000 in their first week.

In comparison, "Music" sold almost 420,000 and "American Life" sold just over 240,000 in their first week.

However, "4 Minutes" has done REALLY well. And with the ability to just buy that one song online, maybe people aren't interested in getting the whole album.

OMG! Tell me about. Terrence and Rosci were asking her weird ass questions. Like wut type of horses she ride and if her daughter wants to be a singer.....WTF? History was in the making for that show and they asked her questions like that???? :laugh

I was so mad when some fool in the audience yelled out Ray Of Light for Madonna to play as her flashback joint of the day. I wanted to punch him. Ugh, I was seriously mad. I so wanted them to play Human Nature since it's hip-hopish instead of some damn ROL. I like the song and all but come, you're on a hip-hop show and I think most of the viewers and audience didn't want to see no ROL.

I was happy that 4 Minutes was #3 on the countdown. I wanna know if it'll go to #1. :laugh

Confessions is the album basically all dance tracks. Lots of people love it as non-stop album and dance music. The music fits in dancing clubs a lot. The promotion from the dancing clubs definitely was a help.

Hard Candy is different. It has some dance and ballads songs.

Madonna Announces Summer Tour

May 08, 2008, 12:00 AM ET
Ray Waddell
Madonna's upcoming tour will begin Aug. 23 in Cardiff, Wales, and will include between 50-60 shows total, Billboard.com has learned. Details of the tour, produced globally by Live Nation, will be announced later today (May 8).

Billed as the Sticky and Sweet tour, Madonna's trek in support of her current chart-topping Warner Bros. release "Hard Candy" -- which debuted atop the Billboard 200 yesterday -- will play stadiums in the U.K. and Europe until the end of September, arenas and a "handful" of stadiums in 16 markets in North America in October and November, and then stadiums in Mexico and South America late November-December.

"I'm thrilled to be involved in another worldwide Madonna extravaganza," Arthur Fogel, chairman of global music for Live Nation, tells Billboard.com. Fogel has helmed Madonna's last three world tours, which grossed almost $400 million combined. Her 2006 Confessions tour is, at $194 million, the top-grossing tour ever by a female artist.

The upcoming tour is the first major manifestation of the multi-faceted
10-year deal between Madonna and Live Nation, valued in published reports at $120 million.

"The reality is she's delivered her last album to Warner Bros., and it's a smash, which is great for everybody," Fogel says. "We now have a tremendous opportunity with a tremendous artist to do all kinds of new and innovative things on many different levels, and this tour will be the start of that rollout."

The tour follows a familiar Madonna touring blueprint in that it visits a limited number of markets in a four-month time frame, with multi-night stands in major cities. Ticket on-sale details will be announced today, along with a presale through Live Nation's corporate sponsorship partner Citi. Fogel says ticket prices will be "basically the same as they've been the past two tours," which means primarily in the $55-$350 range.

'Hard Candy' #1 all around the world

Madonna's new studio album 'Hard Candy' has topped the charts all around the world (in more than 30 countries). She has broken her own record, set back in 2005 (Confessions on a Dance Floor debuted at number one in 29 countries). This is (again) a world record for a solo artist.

The leading single '4 Mintes' still tops the charts all around the world and also spends it's fourth week in a row on the top of United World Chart.

This is an incredible success, so congratulations, Madonna - we knew you can do it!

Did she really debut at number 1 in Japan though? I just was on ORICON and I didn't see Hard Candy anywhere on the charts. Or did it come out this week and not before there?

Ok, I was reading the local newspaper yesterday, and they mentioned a rumor about Madonna aiming to visit Brazil in her next Tour in the end of the year and most likely making presentations in two cities: Rio De Janeiro and Fortaleza. I was completely shocked. I mean, is there REALLY a chance she'd come to my city Fortaleza? I'm gasping in excitement though I'm prepared for this rumor to be falsse, but if it actually proves to be true, there's no way I can miss a once in lifetime chance :eek

On a side note: I've just received my HARD CANDY copy!!! At first listen I have to say I was unfortunately a bit dissapointed. But now that I'm relistening to it again, I'm actually loving each of the tracks, and I have to say it's sa pretty good album. :D

bondingo 11th May 2008 12:07 PM

I think it's funny that the candy included was just a bunch of starlight mints. You can buy a 200 pack of those for less than $5. From the way it was sounding before I saw them, it was like they were some special Hard Candy exclusive candy or something, but nope.

I'm soooo excited about the tour! All the rumours that she's coming to Brazil.. I so hope it's true! Anyway, at least if she comes to South America it's gonna be great, I must not lose this opportunity to see the best singer ever!

About the album, does anyone here actually like Spanish Lesson? I can't even listen to it anymore, probably the worst song Maddie ever did. But anyway, I'm completely in love with Dance 2Night, it's growing on me so much! <333

You think you're late...

I haven't stopped listening to Beat Goes On.. ever since the demo version was leaked... Quite surprised actually, the demo was very standard Neptunes stuff. This is probably the first album in ages where Pharrell has done something awesome.. :O.. about damned time too!

Is the tour coming to Australia by any chance?:innocent

Vinylfantasy 11th May 2008 10:37 PM

As of now there are no dates scheduled for Australia. :(

julian 11th May 2008 11:01 PM

I will murder her.... lol

That's probably the biggest con about living in Australia... concerts happen once in a blue moon and sometimes they just get cancelled -_-....

At least for people who live in Asia, its relatively cheap to fly to another country.

~X2RADialbomber~ 11th May 2008 11:42 PM

^ That's not true. We have heaps of concerts here with popular singers... Maroon 5, Christina Aguilera, Rain...?

julian 12th May 2008 12:24 AM

I suppose none of the artists I like tour here.. often.. :P

Actually I did go to Christina's Stripped Tour... but nothing since then. =)

Us Melbournians and Sydneysiders don't get shafted like those from.. WA and NT though.. or TAS... lol

Vinylfantasy 12th May 2008 12:37 AM

Don't throw your arms up yet aussies, she announced the Japan leg of the tour late for Confessions. Japan is a big market so I'd assume she wouldn't skip out on them (you guys are likely to be added if she decides to hit them up).

Northerner 12th May 2008 02:14 AM

So, I've noticed that a lot of people list "She's Not Me" as among their favorite tracks. That's funny, because it's one of the few songs that I still can't really get into (the other one is "Spanish Lesson"). I don't know why, it just seems to go on forever and never really does anything.

What do you guys like about this track? Maybe I just need to look at it from another perspective.

Vinylfantasy 12th May 2008 02:18 AM

I like "She's Not Me" but for me it's not one of the standout tracks on the album. I feel like it would be great with just a little extra punch. Hopefully if she does it on S&S she'll rework it a bit to make up for the album version. The only song on the album I don't care for is Incredible. I wouldn't say I despise it or anything, I just always skip over it. It's basically what "Push" was off of COADF for me.

LEOyumi 12th May 2008 05:28 AM

I used to hate She's Not Me, but I like it now. I think it has kinda generic lyrics and there's nothing special about it, but it's a nice song to dance and have fun ^_^ The ending part is a little bit tyring for me, but I adapted myself to it after a while.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y17...ster-large.jpg

According to what Greek newspaper Eleytheros Tipos posted today the 'Sticky and Sweet' tour will have its Greek stop in Athens in the end, on September 27. From what the paper says the news is coming straight from LiveNation although it hasn't been made official yet. This date was originally posted as part of the tour schedule on Live Nation's website but was then removed. So, Greek fans, apparently there's hope yet!

Justin and Madonna on Ellen - reportage

Madonna appeared in a pre-taped message from the candy shop she did all her interviews in NYC. She said that she thinks Ellen is a great dancer with a hot body and she thanked her for promoting her album.

Timberlake then came out and danced to "4 Minutes" with Ellen. Timberlake revealed that when the music for :"4 Minutes" was conceived, he wanted lyrics that were sexy and thematically more aligned with his last album. Madonna wanted something more serious. He told her that she can’t save the world in four minutes. Madonna decides to make the song "4 Minutes to Save the World."

Emotional Madonna Screens Documentary at Cannes

A choked up Madonna premiered her documentary, I Am Because We Are, about orphans in Malawi, on Wednesday at the Cannes Film Festival.

"This is a film I want the world to see," she said.

Dressed in Chanel haute couture and heels so high she twice grabbed the edge of a seat to steady herself, the Material Girl, 49, sounded near tears as she stood before the audience (including Sharon Stone) at the special screening.

"It's an incredible opportunity for me to be able to show this film in Cannes," she said, noting that she "held my breath" when she sent it to Cannes festival director Thierry Fremaux. "I think I turned purple," she joked.

"To say that this film is a labor of love is trivial," she said. "It's also the journey of a lifetime. I hope you all are as inspired watching it as I was making it." (The singer's adoption of a Malawian boy, David Banda, is nearly complete.)

One light moment: Fremaux teased her about introducing the film in French "because I know she speaks it."

Laughed Madonna: "Not so good."

I thought she looked great at Cannes. The dress is a little crazy, but she makes it work.
