Even if I'm the only one who thinks Kumi's apology was sincere and from her heart, I hope she will still keep moving strong even though people are saying things about her. Although I haven't heard any of the MOON previews, I can probably say people are just being mean about it now. Any Britney Spears' comeback was whack! Gimme More was an excellent song but everything was kinda half-assed. Besides, Kuu shouldn't even be in this position. This "scandal" was people overreacting way to hard to something that wasn't even said in a harsh way. I hope Kuu shuts up everyone and gets number one with this single. Just cause people on the forums aren't feeling the songs, doesn't mean people in Japan won't eat it up. Or at least I hope she takes the number 2 spot. Kuu FOREVER!

And I'm sorry but Ai's single WAS not anything deserved great sales. Rocket Power = weak; One Time = weak; B-side = weak. Overall package = weak single. Ai can do much better and has done much better. The PV was WHACK too so honestly, she needed to step her game up and didn't. I agree that the single flopping is not a big deal and doesn't really deserve good sales, even if I wanted her to get them.

Yeah, Kuu is definitely not blameless for the situation. I mean she said it and whether or not people overreacted, she said it and thus had to deal with the consequences. But I do honestly believe that people overreacted to her saying that and then when she apologized, people just didn't let it go. Of course, I don't know just how much that comment could hurt someone but I honestly do believe that she didn't mean to make anyone feel bad so people don't have to attack her.

Seriously, the "deserve" or "doesn't deserve" talk should be banned from the Oricon thread. No one really deserves or doesn't deserve success, and it's all just what songs you like.

That said, Kuu's single is terrible, it's the only single I haven't liked from her in the past few years besides "Anytime". Hope it flops so she gets the picture that I want something like "FREAKY" or "BUT" or even "Under" again.

I don't think MOON is better than 4 hot wave nor even FREAKY (which was kinda like a bunch of b-side material put together), Lady Go!! sounds better than both Moon and the ultra stupid Fergie song, imo. I think that since BUT Ku hasn't been making the best music (sure Ai no uta was nice) but It doesn't seem she placed much effort into her singles lately. I don't care if she gets #1 or no it's not like she had that many. The obvious thing is, that she passed her prime, and will probably face the same sales Otsuka and BoA are facing now ^^, and it's only the matter of time. Ku was a "trend" which lasted for a year or two, she got a lot of attention and all she had to do is keep the fans, and you can't do that with the pop music she's making.

Well, maybe saying someone deserves success is okay, but saying someone does NOT deserve success should not be said in this thread. That's how the Oricon thread is at JPM and I kind of agree with them. That kind of talk does not really lend itself well to the conversation and just causes drama.

I think Kumi worked hard, so she deserves the number 1, and I think her apology was unnecesary so it doesn't really matter if it was sincere. Yeah, she worked her ass off extra for absolutely nothing, in my book.

And I didn't say i hope they don't succeed. I said i hope they don't get number 1. They don't deserve it as much as Kumi.

You can still get #2 or #3 and be succesful. Look at some Ayu releases... "Boys & Girl" got #2 in it's first week, so did "A BEST".

Or "Soba ni Iru ne" by Thelma Aoyama which almost didn't get number 1 at all.

Look at "Def Tech".

Who is to say that the number 1 position means success?

But Boys & Girls and A BEST got #1 on their 2nd week so they are still #1 hits (like releases that get #1 on the first week) but on those years the #1 spot really said something.

Today you see a lot of releases getting #1 with ridiculous numbers so for the recent years I think that positions aren't hot as they used to but of course still happy and good and treated as #1, #2, or #3 hits they releases get them.

For all I care MOON can go up to number 1 then fall off the top 200 the next week. As long as it gets there.

Ayu's FIRST album went to number one, Kuu didn't get a number one studio album until her FIFTH, Black Cherry.

UVERworld isn't that newbie, either. They have been around for a while. Not a REALLY long time, but long enough to have a fanbase.

I think Kumi struggled with her career more than anyone else.

Ai's fame came by her second single, Ayu, her first album and Hikki and Namie, their first singles.

Kumi didn't start becomnig really popular until her 4th album, and she worked for it HARD.

And I understand infertility is an issue but still, they totally shunned this girl. The fact that she wants to remain a singer is admirable and for that alone she deserves the number 1. If it was me, I probably would have quit.

Well, after Kumi's first show, there was a news clip on Japanese television about it and afterwards some people [as in 35+ year-old women] were asked how they felt about the whole situation? I remember that one of them said that it was regrettable that she said what she said, but she has apologized many times, which means that she is truly sorry and wants to take it back. I just hope that people come to their senses. I mean, sure, you're a famous singer, but you're still going to make mistakes that, in hindsight, shouldn't have happened, which is exactly the case here. I've only heard the previews for the two non-PV songs from MOON, but from what I can tell, it's a solid single. No 4 hot wave [as in amazing], but no FREAKY [as in disappointing] either, thankfully. I'm not saying that any artist or band deserves a certain situation, but I for one, hope that MOON does okay since it's a quite likable single.

I'm seeing outrightly saying Kumi's single is crap and it sucks and having that opinion is fine but just stating it doesn't really take the argument anywhere. Some people like it and some people don't, we can just leave it that. Comparing it Ayu and Hikki and Namie singles isn't helping anything either. Hikki and Ayu's music styles are nothing like Kuu's.

Hikki's popularity also stemmed from the fact that she was like bringing a new sound into the J-pop market. And it's not like Kuu hasn't written any lyrics of her own. For her popularity, there are a lot of songs that got her noticed - real Emotion / 1000 no Kotoba, Cutie Honey and of course Butterfly. I wouldn't say the Final Fantasy single put her on the map...it just got her into the public eye more with a hit song. And I wouldn't say her first albums sucked, that's just an opinion. I think secret was an amazing album filled with great songs from start to finish. Her singles did a little better, she had Cutie Honey as a success, her true ero-kakkoi image began and she had the extra PVs to promote the album.

Struggling...I mean everybody has had their struggles. Kuu's struggle to maintain an an image that she didn't create for herself and all of the people who said stuff about it; seeing her sister have such fame while she didn't. I think Kuu's were more a personal thing than a public disaster or something but she's turning away from ero-kakkoi image and if nothing, she's straying away from something that she isn't comfortable with and even if you don't like her or her music, you gotta give her credit for that.

Anyways, I like the MOON single, but not enough to say that it deserves #1, but that's only my opinion. If it hits #1, it's because enough consumers liked it to buy it and put it there. If it doesn't hit #1, same reasoning applies. This is the music industry - deserves and not deserves don't apply. For debuting artists, luck plays a major role in determining success. All serious debuting artists work hard, but only a handful "make it." All of them deserve to achieve success, but life is rarely fair.

It's not about if it "deserves" number one, it's if it is a worthy purchase. I guess after reading some responses in here the answer for most people is a no, therefore it probably won't get to #1. But we'll see.

I would prefer for the sales to be generally higher XD as we've seen that you can get a #1 even with relatively miserable sales (DEF DIVA and AAA) if you carefully pick the release date, but that doesn't mean your single/album will actually sell good ^^

^I liked Soba ni Iru ne. I think there were better songs than SNIN that I thought should have recieved some of the same success...but oh, well. If Thelma gets #1 yearly, wouldn't she be like the 1st debuting artist to get a #1 single yearly? @_@ If so, I would so disappointed tho. I mean, not a single single this year surpassed the 500k yet. =/

I agree with Kaori that soba ni iru ne is pretty bland. :yes And it doesn't at all sound like a song that would sell so well.

But on the other hand, I think a lot of singles better than DUES have been released this year. I guess DUES isn't really bad or anything, I just like listening to LIPS more than it. But LOVEJUICE was like :love

I don't actually like Soba ni Iru or DUES but Thelma's song is really boring IMO. I really don't get all the hype about her.
Of the top three, Arashi has the best song but I guess it isn't close enough to be in the running for the top spot.
Hopefully someone will bring an AMAZING single that will destroy everyone...I'm still praying that Hana Yori Dango works magic for aiko like it did Hikki and KissHug gets great sales!

As for Soba, I think the lyrics is what attracted fans to the song. =/ I thought that were okay...nothing out of the ordinary. It's been overplayed and overrated now....but I don't mind the success that it has now.

95% of Thelma's discography is better than Soba ni Iru ne. Although I do quite like that song too. Her album DIARY is great even though it takes a while to sink in. <3

I'm not really bothered as to which song gets the best seller because they've already sold amazingly so in a sense they've really already won. If that even makes sense - to me it does right now.

I'm so depressed at Crystal Kay's position, and slightly angry at Kumi's.

Edit And Luv, it doesn't matter if aiko gets the #1 of the year or not, she needs this #1 no matter how it sells. In her 10 year career, she's been in the top 5 for 8 years and not a single #1. :grumpy

Wow I'm a little suprised by all the negative remarks about her. soba ni iru ne is not the best song of the year by far, it's barely an above average song, but I think it's deserving compared to some other songs that got #1. Not a fan of KAT-TUN at all so definitely cheering her on :P plus I <3 Diary.

I don't like Aiko. She sounds too....kiddish? for my tastes. Plus she looks like my math teacher that I can't stand :laugh I've only listened to Himitsu album from her. After one listen through it I deleted it. Maybe I'll try something else from her in the future.

Why does everyone seem to hate Thelma? You can't judge her by one of currently fourteen songs listed to her name. Songs like My dear friend and ONE WAY really let her vocals shine and if you want a proper, inspired ballad with good vocals by her just listen to the song DIARY. And Thelma is far from ugly. You're almost as bad as the people who judge Stephanie by her looks before her amazing music.

concerning the HYD songs, i don't think both singles will sell as high as you expect them to. a j-movie tie-in is very different from a j-drama tie-in. a single can benefit more from a j-drama tie-in because the show is shown weekly and it gets a nice boost after each show.

...but then again, it is HYD. i still think they'll sell moderately well. i don't think Arashi or aiko will get the top yearly spot, but that's just me talking. XD

i'm personally rooting for "DUES" to get that top spot. i liked "Soba ni Iru ne" for a while, but i don't think it's that great to get the yearly #1 spot. but, Mr. Children has some singles coming out too. i think they have the potential to knock either KAT-TUN or Aoyama Thelma from the top spot.

Well, this IS the Oricon thread, and we're discussing the top singles of the year. "Soba ni Iru ne" doesn't deserve the #1 spot, IMO, and I think that it's really overrated. I was only talking about that song, not her other stuff, because I haven't listened to it (mostly due to the fact that SNIN has turned me off from her), so it could be great, I don't know.

Yeah agreed. I myself am not into Stephanie's looks at all, but wow I heard her album and it's one of my top 3 favorite albums of 08. She has a really beautiful voice. Sad it didn't do that well on the charts. I think her looks may have played a part in that too, but you can only guess.

I didn't like much of her music until I heard "Friends" which I enjoyed quite a bit. Her album was pretty good. It would be sad if her looks played into her album flopping. I didn't think she was ugly or anything, but I mean even her record company covered her face in most her first video. That's kind of embarrassing.
