^ actually in my country (or most parts) 60-69 is a C, 70-79 is a B etc. :yes

Main reviews:
Spoiler:
01. THE introduction - 4/10
A few other people have said something similar, and really, the first thing I thought as soon as the main part started up was, 'omg, this sounds like the boss theme to an RPG or something! XD' It's definitely...interesting. Can't decide if I like it or not. All I know is that it doesn't fit at all, and it's not up to par with Ayu. :dead2 It also only slightly works well going into the next track.

02. Microphone - 10/10
I think we all can agree, this is definitely one of the best tracks, if not the best, for some. :yes It's interesting, it's powerful, it's unique, and it's totally ROCKIN'! :D The organs, the guitar, her epic and random English, hah... S'all good. Oh, and it works surprisingly well as the track before count down. ...Nothing more to say, because it needs nothing more. :)

03. count down - 5/10
This is one of those songs that I feel had so much potential, but it's like they said, 'oh, **** it, just throw this chorus in there and finish it,' lol... Chorus is a real let down. :\ This song just kinda drags on, I guess. It does have potential to grow on me a bit, though. I honestly may have given it a four, at best, but I bumped it up a bit for good lyrics and potential. On a good note, it transitions nicely into Sunset.

04. Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~ - 6.5/10
I've gone back and forth between liking this better than Sunrise and vice versa. I officially think this is second... But either way, this is a very pretty ballade, and it's amazing how well it works as both that and an upbeat summer song. The arrangement for this is just beautiful, and it's a very relaxing song. The only thing about it is, it gets boring after a while, so it's gonna lose some points. >_< Since the next track is another ballade, the flow is fine here.

05. BALLAD - 5/10
I still don't understand how anybody could like this even slightly more than You were..., ah hah. >_> The only reason it isn't a three or four is because the arrangement is interesting (much more so than the actual song, lol). I mean, it is pretty, but that's it. It gets very boring, very fast, in my opinion. Even though Last Links is a slighter more uptempo, kinda acoustic rock sorta track, BALLAD goes very nicely into it.

06. Last Links - 9/10
This track is surprisingly amazing~! The lyrics are gorgeous, and even though this song is pretty simple in general, it's catchy and...well, awesome, hah. :) The effect was a neat touch, too. ;) Although, I don't know how the hell it works into montage, lol...

07. montage - 5.5/10
Um......what, lol?? This is a very random track, I think... I love the instruments they use, but that's it - that's pretty much the only reason it gets such a high grade, lol. It is interesting, and definitely something different for Ayu, but... Again, this just doesn't fit, at all. :no Seriously, just like I don't know how Last Links somehow goes into this, I have no ****ing clue why this is put before Don't look back! >__>

08. Don't look back - 8/10
This is a really great song, but really, it just barely makes the top five, in my opinion.... Definitely not the strongest track on the album (the overall strongest, I think, would probably be Microphone, even if it's only my second favourite). Even though I've grown to like this song a lot, I still don't understand some people's amazement over it... And really, without the PV, I wouldn't like it as much, I don't think. A lot of others probably wouldn't, either... Anways. The transition for this into the next song is surprisingly great, hah.

09. Jump! - 6.5/10
Definitely the best interlude here, and the only one that actually sounds like it came from an Ayu album. Honestly, I think this has potential to be turned into a pretty good, shorter song. Done right, it could be very powerful and catchy. :yes Also, I believe this would have worked much better put BEFORE Don't look back... Then again, it works perfectly into Lady Dynamite, so I guess it should stay.

10. Lady Dynamite - 7.5/10
I really like this song........but something~'s missing. Not sure what, exactly, but I was expecting it to be so much greater. :\ Anywho, it'll probably grow a bit more on me, so who knows. This works great into Sexy little things, though, which I wasn't expecting it to at all. A pleasant surprise.

11. Sexy little things - 7/10
This is definitely a song that needs to grow on you, I think. I thought this was very annoying my first listen, hah... I'm really liking it now, though, but a lot of that is because it's extremely catchy.. Anyhow, I like how this is a new direction for Ayu, while at the same time, it does sound familiar. Very interesting song, if anything. It'll probably get old after a short while, though... Then again, it may also grow on me a bit more. :laugh Oh, and this going into Sunrise is a bit random, hah.

12. Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~ - 7/10
I really enjoy this song a lot, but I get sick of it fast. It's one of those I have to be in the mood for. Nevertheless, it's a really fun song that makes you want to sing along, and I love that about it. :) It's one of those that I'll enjoy seeing live, because it seems like it will really get the crowd pumped............. This does not go into the next song, at all. XD

13. meaning of Love - 7/10
Nooooo, I thought this was gonna be a wonderful song! But....it gets old fairly quickly. :\ Even so, it's still really good. Just, when we have You were... on the same album (which, this is like a watered down version of You were..., hah), and then Days on the one before this, this song looks average at best. D: Speaking of You were..., this goes into it great, of course.

14. You were... - 10/10
I couldn't love this song any more, hah! :heart It's soooo powerful, and the lyrics are amazing. I also love her vocals in this one, especially (I love the vocals on this album in general, though :yes). I don't care what anybody says, this is one of her best ballades ever. :P Yes, it's pretty typical winter-Ayu stuff, but it also has a special something that makes it so incredible. My favourite track on the album, and one of my favourite Ayu songs in years. And even though this song is very depressing, it somehow goes nicely into the final track.

15. RED LINE ~for TA~ [album version] - 9/10
This song also took a while to grow on me, but now that it has, it's one of my favourites. It's upbeat and incredibly catchy, and it's a song that really makes you feel good inside. ^_^ The ending they added really wasn't anything special, but it is beautiful. I love listening to Ayu's a capella's, because she's really good at doing them, and this is no exception. I love how they fade into the la la la's, and then she just goes right into the last part - an absolutely perfect way to end any album, but especially this one. :cool

Overall: 8.5/10
This album definitely has a few big flaws - such as two incredibly boring tracks, random and kinda bad interludes, two songs that are technically the same, and then another two that are very similar - but despite all that, what is good is practically jaw dropping. This album has quickly rose to my top five, and it actually even has a good chance of getting into top three.

I think that taking this album as a whole, it's definitely one of her best. Everything works so wonderfully together, despite being so random, hah. (Well, except for the interludes.....but let's just forget about those, along with the ones from NEXT LEVEL. >_>')
I think the vocals are the best they've been since GUILTY, and the lyrics are her overall best since at least (miss)understood. The PVs, I think, are also some of her most interesting to date. :yes The songs in general are kind of a hit or miss for most people, but luckily, it seems that everybody can at least find one or two songs they really appreciate from this album, even if they don't like it.

Rock 'n' Roll Circus has definitely got me super-excited about Ayu again. :D I look forward to seeing every song on this album live - even the ones I don't like as much - and I definitely can't wait to have my very own copy. :love

Kazeyomi 11th April 2010 07:56 PM

Here's my review sorry for my english lol

THE introduction:
This is the most awful intro song in her whole career. It doesn't make me think of a 'welcome to the Miss Hamasaki's amazing circus' but just 'ehy I'm in a fail '70s b-movie right?'. 5/10

Microphone:
It's her best rock song so far with talkin' 2 myself and Because of You. The intro it's amazing, the lyrics are amazing, the arrangement is amazing. THIS SONG IS AMAZING.
May her vocals would be much better, but I like them though. 9.5/10

count down:
When I have listened to the preview I was 'meh' but then 'wow'. This song sounds quite different from her previous works even if sometimes it reminds me GUILTY (especially the beginning), but with better vocals and arrangement. 7.5/10

Sunset -LOVE is ALL-:
No just no. 4/10

BALLAD:
Ayu seems 'chinese traditional music addicted' nowadays isn't? And I like it, obviously. BALLAD is an ethereal emotional ballad, her vocals are great and sweet. She sounds like a sort of goddess/fairy who want to tell you a story. It's perfect to sleep in my opinion (not in a bad way lol). Overall I find the BALLAD's arrangement much better than the GREEN one. 9.5/10

Last Links:
The acoustic guitar, her clear voice and the bitter lyrics makes this song quite awesome. Overall isn't 'new' it's the same type of song like Heartplace and Life, but it's well done. 8.5/10

montage:
A good interlude, finally! I really like it and it's one of her best interlude imo. I love the baroque/classical vibe of this song and it's kinda sad. A perfect introduction to the next song. 8/10

Don't look back:
At first I find this song pretty boring, but after a couple of listenings I start to like it. Luckily it's different from the CM version, that was sound like a generic '80s jpop song. This song is kinda new from her but she have done a good job with it. She's really cute when she says 'don't look back' btw 8.5/10

Jump!:
Electroish interlude. Nice but nothing special. 6/10

Lady Dynamite:
Sassy lyrics and catchy arrangement makes this electro-rock song full of win. It's sounds like a track made for fun, and that's not bad at all. 8/10

Sexy little things:
Damn you Ayu and your catchy songs (lol jk).
This is her best pop song ever, really different from her previous cute-pop song. Her cutesy voice doesn't bother me too much because it fits really well with the funny but not so generic arrangement. 8/10

Sunrise -LOVE is ALL-:
This song is full of energy indeed, but Ayu have done better summer songs. 5.5/10

meaning of Love:
oh noes not another generic Ayu-ballad: Days -the revenge- the lyrics can't save this crap sorry 4/10

You were...:
A really good winter single and omg THE GUITARS. That's mostly because of them that the song sounds so awesome to me lol. 8.5/10

RED LINE -for TA- (album version):
I always found this song really cute and it obviously it's perfect as album ending song. The album version it's more sweet than the single version in my opinion, especially for the lovely acapella part at the ending. 8.5/10

Overall:

The rock tracks are really few, and most of them are just pop-rock or electro-rock tracks far to being true Rock 'n' Roll. But this album is a true circus, because she show us her 'next level music' and there are tracks made of fun and made of meaning. The lyrics finally are well written so the true Ayu's back. The only bad things on this album are the weakness of Sunrise and Sunset and the boring arrangement of meaning of Love. Overall in this album there are the old and the new Ayu putted together, and I can feel the hard work she have done. May RnC it's far from the 'perfection' of her old albums but that's far away from her rushed GUILTY and her made just for fun but awesome NEXT LEVEL. Ayu's back, slowly back.

emi♡ 11th April 2010 08:42 PM

here comes my long ass review...though that shouldnt be surprising :laugh

THE introduction: perfect and great as a lead in for the album. I know people might be disappointed that it wasnt really like...a "full" introduction a la Not Yet or Mirror, but I think it is great as a suspense builder for the rest of the album, and I don't think it really has to be a "full" one, since it served it's purpose. A lot of artists and bands have intros like this all the time...so to me, it's not too disappointing, but I can see how people would think it is. It's just different.

7/10

Microphone: just greatness. This song has REALLY grown on me, because it has the Ayu rock sound that I've come to respect because a lot of people don't have this sound. It reminds me of MY STORY and (miss) understood era, and I love that so much.

9.5/10

count down: omg whats gonna happen...I wasnt expecting this at all, and I really love it. There's so much going on in it, although I know it sounds like a pretty straightforward rock song. There's actually only one part I dislike in the chorus, and it's only one note...the rest of it is just great for me. I see a lot of people comparing it to other things...but to me it's such a different melody and sound for her, Im really happy it's here after Microphone.

8/10

Sunset: Eh...okay, the melody of this song I love, and I love that Sunset is so much better than the other one...but to me, it feels really out of place after count down...but Ballad is next...so we'll see how it goes lol

6/10

BALLAD: This song has grown on me. The melody in the verses is gorgeous. It seems to me that a lot of her songs lately have been very "sweet" sounding lol One of the things I think is great about this song is how incredibly simple it is, yet how incredibly beautiful it is, and to me, that is really important, because it says a lot about the strength of the melody and instrumental tracks. I think you could listen to this instrumental and have an entirely new song. So...I think after all this time, I really agree with my friends that this is one of Ayu's best ballads ever.

8.5/10

Last Links: I don't really like how this starts out only on the right...but I can let it go if the song is good...Love the acoustic, and I like the melody as well, seems like the writers got off their butts lol This song, for me, is in the same category as count down...it's so different to me, even though it's reminiscient of things...as a whole, it's quite not her thing, and she's doing it so well...I love this song...it's perfect. PERFECT ENDING OMG.

9/10

montage: ooo opening is greatness...woah lol was not expecting the orchestra....oh I love it lol It reminds me of Howls Moving Castle lol NOOOOO I wanted it to be a whole song. Damit.

9/10

Don't Look Back: Okay...so I've heard this song in the previews and leaks and like...I love this song...even if it isnt really the strongest song ever created, and I know people will hate it, or say it's flat and boring..it's just...you know the way the melody goes, and the whole instrumental...it's just...thats how it should be lol If this song were anything else...I think it wouldnt fit. Especially with the PV...I mean woah, that PV was amazingness...This song is so unique, it's more advanced electronics, and really gorgeous in a weird way. I get a MAJOR Ladies Night vibe when listening to it., but it's evolved into this sound that is just fantastic. To me, it is an advanced song for her, out of her comfort zone, and that is GREAT.

9.5/10

Jump!: Okay, see when I think Ayu + Electronica, these are the songs that come to mind. Why oh why couldn't she have had this sound on NEXT LEVEL? It would have been soooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better, so much more advanced and sophisticated. This is great. GREAT. A great interlude for flow. Her interludes seem to be changing a bit. imo they're becoming less like full stand alone songs, and more for the flow of the album...I think on this album she's found a great balance of the two, which is something, you'd be surprised, but a lot of artists just cant do.

8.5/10

Lady Dynamite: This song cracks me up, because the melody of the chorus reminds me of those kid songs that are like...teasing? I can't really explain it lol This isn't my favorite song...because the sound isn't my favorite...but I think it's great, and perfect for this song...and I am really happy that they came up with a melody that is catchy and can be repeated in the instrumental tracks prominently without being repetetive or annoying. Not my favorite, but serves it's purpose for the song.

7/10

Sexy Little Things: I love the intro...but....I am just not really one for the cute swing electro. It's too much like Energize...though I think it's more sophisticated than Energize, and I will say it is one of her more definitely unique songs...and I like that they were able to pull off that chorus lol The verses melody are okay...some things are kinda messy, but I think this song is going to be AMAZINGLY FUN in concert...and you know, imo it really better be, because live is the ONLY way that this song will be saved, and I really hope it wont be lipsynced.

7/10

Sunrise: oh...this song is next...great lol imo these songs shouldnt even have been on the album...I would have much preferred a 13 track album to having them here...or...they could have taken this one out, put Sunset here, and had a new slightly electro arrangment for it...for the flow into meaning of love....I basically have the same thoughts for this as for Sunset...although I prefer Sunset for this melody...this one has a more interesting arrangment. But still, meh. EW I FORGOT ABOUT THE BACK UP SINGERS....sorry...but it's gross lol gut it pez anyone? lol

5.5/10

meaning of love: I'm excited for this song...and I like the acoustic guitar I heard...okay...so right off, it's a little cheesy, like a Disney song...but I do like the little melody it's got. I don't see this song really being one of her best, but I do like that it has a lot of her and her personality in it...kinda like Days I guess. It's got all these feelings and all this "Ayu" in it, but it isn't really musically great, especially in comparison to the other songs...but it's alright. I can't wait to hear this live though...if her voice is good, it'll be so epic and full of emotion, but the studio version for me, is just a tad lacking of the proper impacts and stuff like that. I have a feeling that after the tour though, everyone will love this song more...I hope she doesn't do the hanabi dance for it lol

7.5/10

You Were: is this you were I hear lol Yes...this is a great song to be after meaning of love...talk about perfect placement. So this song has so much power in it, and it's really nice that the arrangment isn't really as generic as other ballads, like meaning and Days and such...it's still not GREAT, but it's really good, and live this song is greatness...and I really can't wait to see it in the tour. The power is just fantastic...and it's grown on me.

8/10

RED LINE: This has such an Ayu Encore song feeling lol it's funny to me. It's not really my favorite, nor do I think it's that great musically, but it's really sweet, and full of "Ayu" lol and I think that counts for something, and as a song for the fans, I think it serves it's purpose without being overly cheesy, and I do think it's a great way to end the album...almost feels like a bonus song or something...like a little present. It's cool. The vocal only part at the end...should have been a little shorter imo lol

7/10

OVERALL

So....this album is great. I think...of course there are flaws with it...or certain things that aren't as like, epic and great as her past albums...but well, for me, it's a place that I had to come to, where I realised that, I don't really think anything is ever going to be as great as her past albums, where like, every song was amazing.

To me, this album is great, in comparison with what she has been doing lately, especially after NEXT LEVEL, and in comparison with what everyone else in Japan is doing. I think it's more mainstream than her other albums in ways, for example, the acoustic songs, and the fact that her interludes are not like her older ones, and they actually remind me a lot of interludes from some other japanese bands, especially the indie ones. Very different.

I think that this album really redeems Ayu in a way. I feel like it's a lot more versatile than other things she's had, and that even though it is so, I feel like it's quite a cohesive album that pulls together all of these elements and makes something that's really unique and interesting, and where there's a song for everyone, which...I guess also will mean that there will most definitely be a song that isn't for everyone lol

With that though, I think that whether people like certain songs or not, the songs do their job in what they were supposed to convey, and they are very very very true to sound, and I believe the sound that she wanted to create, and so, I see every song as a victory and as special as well, because imo, every single song brings something new and adds to the album in some way, and that is an amazing victory in itself.

Very good album: Overall...8.5/10

Rock 'N' Roll Circus > GUILTY >>>>>>>> NEXT LEVEL lol

Mr. Goto 11th April 2010 10:27 PM

will keep this short

THE introduction - it reminds me of music from a 90's RPG...i like it. 8/10

Microphone - the best song on this album. 9/10

count down - much better than most of the rock songs on GUILTY. 8/10

Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~ - lol 2/10

BALLAD - nice song but i find it so boring :/ ayu ballads have been pretty blah for me lately. 6.5/10

Last Links - not memorable for me at all. 6/10

montage - bad placement on the album but i like how it sounds. 8/10

Don't look back - it's a nice song...not really much else i can say. was kinda hoping for vogue part 2 but this song doesn't even come close to the level of vogue~ 7.5/10

Jump! this would of been so much better without ayu's yelling in the background :shakehead 6/10

Lady Dynamite I was hoping this song would have a bit more "oomph". It will probably grow on me in the future. 8/10

Sexy Little things - This song is so weird, in a good way of course. 9/10

Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~ - weak. 5/10

meaning of Love -pretty song but i can't really see myself listening to it often. her other ballads are so much better. 6/10.

You were... her weakest winter ballad by FAR. i don't hate it as much as i used to though. 7/10

RED LINE ~for TA~ [album version] love this song! a great way to end the album. 8/10

Overall this album isn't the upgrade from NEXT LEVEL I was hoping it would be. It's a shame because the singles really ruin this album, I wouldn't mind if they did more [album versions] of the single songs. It's not like they could of made them any worse...

It's the way grades work.

if you say it that way, then what are your chances of using 5/10, 4/10, 3/10, 2/10, 1/10 if theyre all F? the differences wont matter, so your scores will be highly inflated.

Rurutia's Review

1) THE introduction (2/10)
ahem...nooo..no where near "THE introduction". I originally gave it a 1/10 but the last 7 seconds of the song saved it....a little.....the synth part was sooo cheesy and boring....big dissapointment. One of her worst album intros to date as well as one of her worst interludes.

2) MICROPHONE (100000000/10)
I LOOOOOOOOOOOVEEEEE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!! "Tell me why Tell me Why, I don't, I don't know"....such a great hook. This song is utter perfection. Her vocals are perfect and the chorus is soooo great. The bridge is sooooo beautiful. This is pure love and I love the music video for it....BY far the BEST song on the album...and one of my favorite AYU songs EVAR!!!!

3) Countdown (5/10)
This song sounds like an album filler to me. I hate the chorus....but LOVE the ways she ends the chorus....The guitar part sounds weak, if it had come on a little stronger it would have sounded awesome. The verses are okay. THe bridge is decent but like I said before the guitars sound weak to me. The chorus ruined the song for me.

4) Sunset (8/10)
Why oh why does this song get such hate?!!! I don't understand...I think its beautiful. I can imagine me on a beach listening to this song when the sun is setting...^_^. It really is beautiful. Seriously an underrated song. The piano is beautiful as well as the melody. However I don't listen to the song that much but when I do, it sounds wonderful.

5) Ballad (8/10)
Another beautiful Ayumi Ballad, not anything mind blowing but pleasant to the ears. The harp or whatever it is adds such an ethereal feeling to the verse. The chorus is touching and emotional as well. A solid beautiful Ayu ballad. With a little more work this song could have sounded more epic like Alan's ballads, like red cliff.

6) Last Links (9/10)
Acoustic Guitars + Violin = excellent combination. This song has got a great beat but it sounds like I've heard it somewhere else from another J-pop artist..But who cares..Ayu is singing it and I love it. This totally sounds like it belongs in an anime like Full Metal Alchemist. Not a wow factor song for me but a solid song nonetheless.

7) Montage (9/10)

Oooohhh creepy in the beginning. Sounds like something from Shadow of the Colossus. This song really is a montage, so many different sounds and feelings. I love strings and percussions.

8) Don't Look back (9/10)
Wasn't impressed by the preview, not impressed by the full song, but the pv made me like the song a little more. Everything else is great but I wish the chorus was a little more interesting. The verse is fantastic as well as the bridge. I love the way she says "don't look back." I LOVE THE BRIDGE....PURE LOVE.... !!! But the dang chorus....arggggg Could have been a 10/10 had it not been for the chorus.

9) Jump! (7/10)
Okay I'm not gonna lie I burst out laughing when I heard this for the first time....when it got to the jump jump jump part....lol....First time an Ayu song's ever done that to me. But I don't know...I still like this interlude. LOL

10) Lady Dynamite (8/10)
The PV? WTF?!!! First listen didn't like it..but the more I listened, the more I liked it....its catchy, I can't help it. But the PV needs to DIE!!!! I really like the chorus, has a lot of energy.

11) Sexy little things (7/10)
ok, was TOTALLY not expecting this....The beginning is awesome. I don't love this song...BUT I do appreciate her effort to try something different. The chorus is really catchy But I don't find myself listening to this song that often. This song belongs on the next level album. Cute song.

12) Sunrise (8/10)
Summer oh summer....Why does this song get a lot of hate too? I don't get it....This song makes me wanna jump up and down. Definitely has a summer sound to it. However I DO NOT like when the guys are singing. Ayu should have done that part then I would've liked the song more.

13) Meaning of love (6/10)
Two words......GENERIC SONG.... however... i still like it. What saved the song for me was the great chorus...everything else is a little boring...and her vocals are just oooozing love. Some parts remind me of untitled for her.

14) You were....(8/10)

I don't why but I really like this song...the beginning is soooooooooooooooo beautiful and the verses as well. The PV is awesome too. The chorus is okay could've been better. I wish the chorus would've been softer instead of trying to sound like a power ballad. Softer would've been much better for this song.

15) Red Line~Album version~ (10/10)
I loved the original but I love this version even more! The acapella at the end is amazing and so touching. A great way to end the album.

Cherry Dynamite 12th April 2010 03:14 AM

THE introduction
It's okay a bit boring.
5/10
Microphone
I love this track, The organs are awesome but it sounds repetitive.
8.5/10
count down
I love the intro one of my faves from R'n'R C. I love the vocals.
9/10
Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~
I think there's too much hatred for this track, I actually like it sure it's a bit repetitive but the melody is good.
8/10
BALLAD
I love the transition from Sunset to BALLAD. I love this song <3 I don't find it boring at all.
9/10
Last Links
I love how personal the song is and I love the intro but the more I listen to the song the more it feels meh for me.
7/10
Montage
The positioning is bad, It doesn't work as an interlude there. I actually like it but NEXT LEVEL interludes were way better.
7/10
Don't Look Back
I love the arrangement, it doesn't sound noisy even though there's a lot going on. The vocals are okay but not great.
9.5/10
Jump!
Not the best interlude but just because the positioning is good I'll give it a thumbs up.
7/10
Lady Dynamite
I can't believe this song actually grew on me. I probably hated it before because of the PV I was a bit biased, but it's actually catchy and I can't get enough of it.
9.5/10
Sexy Little Things
Lady Dynamite and Sexy Little Things flows together really well. I love the track it's my favorite from the album it's so different for an Ayu song.
10/10
Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~
I think I'm one of the few people who actually like this song. At first I seriously hated it but when I saw the a-nation performance I can't stop jumping and doing the towel thing.
8/10
meaning of Love
GENERIC! but it's likable.
7/10
You were...
When I first heard the it, I hated it but it grew on me and I actually enjoy listening to it now.
8/10
RED LINE ~for TA~ [album version]
it's likable not the best, It doesn't sound much different to the original. The acapella is good but it would have been better if she stopped at ~lalala~
8/10

Overall 8/10

Album track wise it's a step up from NEXT LEVEL.
Introduction/Interlude it's a step back from NEXT LEVEL.

Jason 12th April 2010 03:14 AM

1. THE introduction
--I like it. Reminds me of an old school Final Fantasy theme.
N/A

2. Microphone
--Quite simply the best rock song Ayu has come out with in a while (since Mirrorcle World and talkin' 2 myself). It's fierce, melodic and doesn't leave your head for a long time. Reminds me of the MY STORY days :)
9/10

3. count down
--One of my favorite tracks on the album. It's got that raw production I love to hear from Ayu with great lyrics to match. The chorus isn't as strong as Microphone but I do find it more effective because of the instrument work.
10/10

4. Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~
--This is where I feel the album hits a bump. It's not that Sunset is a bad song, it's not, I love it, it's a beautiful ballad. But honestly, after Microphone and count down, Sunset just doesn't fit in with them... It's such a dramatic change of tone and feel. I felt I was just starting to get into the album and then... BANG! Sunset comes along and pokes its head out like a social misfit. It's still a great track, though.
7.5/10 (only because of it's placement on the album, the song itself I give a 9)

5. BALLAD
--BALLAD has itself in a safe position after Sunset. Although I felt it was the weaker of the single (You were.../BALLAD), I still love the track. It's production, instruments, powerful chorus and relaxing versus... Brilliant song, but again, I feel Sunset and BALLAD just let the album down somewhat.
8/10

6. Last Links
--The acoustic opening made my heart stop when I first heard this one, then the violins kicked in and I knew this song would blow me away. Definitely another favorite for me on this album. The composition and the way the song flows is just perfection.
10/10

7. montage
--This interlude surprised me. Epic...
N/A

8. Don't look back
--By far my favorite track on the album. Everything about it is so different from your typical Ayu song. The lyrics, the Arabian instrument work, the arrangement and the amazing PV that follows. There's not much more I can say about it, it's a must listen!
10/10

[b]9. Jump![b]
--The minute I heard this interlude I knew it was gonna get a mixed reaction. I think it's a perfect transition between Don't look back and the songs that follow. Plus it's nice to hear a mess of loud noise every now and then :)
N/A

10. Lady Dynamite
--This one has grown on me. It's a great pop song and it is catchy but it's not all that memorable. I just can't see myself going out of my way to listen to it that often...
8/10

11. Sexy little things
--I actually love this song. I just think it suffers abit from the production. It's just petty little complaints from me so I won't get into it :P Overall, I love it :)
9/10

12. Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~
--My opinion hasn't changed about this song at all, it's a solid but flawed pop song. Although (it's not as big of a problem as earlier in the album), I just feel, again, that this one doesn't fit in much with the album.
7/10

13. meaning of Love
--Very typical Ayu ballad. It's got a beautiful melody and great composition. But it does kinda fade out of your memory very quickly.
8/10

14. You were...
--The only single track I don't have a complaint against! You were... was always my favorite single track leading into Rock 'n' Roll Circus. Very powerful ballad and is perfectly fine where it is on the album.
9/10

RED LINE ~for TA~ [album version]
--Nothing really different from the original, which disappointed me. But the ending is just perfect, though. Great way to end the album :)
8.5

Overall:
The album tracks really blow the singles out of the water. Rock 'n' Roll Circus's only flaw is just that, the singles. It's obvious they were released without ever thinking of a musical direction for the album. Still, the Rock 'n' Roll Circus is great and it does have it's fair share of absolute gems (count down, Last Links and Don't look back are standouts in particular). It's far from Ayu's best, but it's also far, far from her worst.

8/10

untitledforayu 12th April 2010 06:51 AM

1. THE Introduction - Not a fan. Probably my least favourite intro with the exception of Prologue. 4/10

2. Microphone - Pretty darn cool, a mix between kiss o kill and Rule...both of which I liked more. Also, the engrish is pointless and annoying. However, the chorus is powerful and I love the sound of the organ, so one of the better songs on the album, imo. 8/10

3. count down - Biggest disappointment on the album, though not the worst song. The intro is great, reminiscent of GUILTY and criminal, but the song soon descends into a very generic Ayu pop-rock lament. The bridge is nice though... 5/10

4. Sunset ~BLAH blah SNOOZE~ - It's nice. It's ok. I like it. But that's it really. She's pushing no boundaries here. 6/10

5. BALLAD - Soooooooo beautiful. My favourite track on the album. Soft, tender verses contrasted with blossoming choruses :luv2 The bridge is orgasmic. 9.5/10

6. Last Links - It's ok. If only Ayu hired someone who knew how to play drums on this track... Pretty standard pop fare though. Violins are always nice when you've run out of inspiration :P 5/10

7. montage - Not bad. It sounds a bit too consciously epic...if that makes sense. Some parts are bett than others. Organ! :love 7/10

8. Don't look back - 2nd fave! At first I didn't like it, but it has grown on me a loooot. Nice mix of exotic sounds and synth, with a bit of RnB thrown in. I prefer the eerie verses to the chorus. 8.5/10

9. Jump! -
Easily the best interlude on the album. Fun and dancey with a nice build up. 8/10

10. Lady Dynamite
- Yeah ok it's fun...but mostly it's an uninspired piece cheap, tacky, assembly-line dance-pop. Severe lack of personality, unless you call wh***ing the "bad party girl" image personality. 5/10

11. Sexy little things - At first I hated it, but after hearing the mediocrity that permeates the rest of the album, I appreciate Slt's uniqueness. The cute voice can be annoying, but overall it's a twisted, interesting listen. 8/10

12. Sunrise ~LOVE is RECYCLED~ - Ayu did her bit for the environment. Can be a fun, unlifting romp through all-too-familiar territory when I'm in the mood. 6/10

13. meaning of Love -
*Sigh*...boring...generic...soppy...very little replay value. It It's not shockingly bad, but there are SOOOOO MANY better Ayu ballads to choose from. The lyrics seem insincere too. 3/10

14. You were... -
Once again, a tad generic, but A LOT nicer than meaning of Love. Nice and wintery. 7/10

15. RED LINE ~for TA~ [Better vers.] - The accapella at the end is lovely :) The rest of the song is ok. Good album ender nonetheless. 6/10

Overall: In my opinion, her most bland, uninspired album yet. It's ok to back to basics, but for crying out loud Ayu, don't make a whole album that sounds like counterfeit fragments of your previous (and far better) work. Better luck next time. 5/10

:laugh that is just genius

freedreamer 12th April 2010 11:14 AM

FIRST IMPRESSIONS.
I've only heard the album thru once..not fully coz i skipped Sunset to reach Last Links haha...and furthermore i heard it on surround but in the end, I realized it was a big mistake because the surrond makes the album felt so spacious...lol if u get what I mean..

1. THE introduction
I kept reading videogame and yes, definitely sounds like a video game. I wished it was more developed but I love how it ended and it set the mood just right!
6.5/10

2. Microphone
I almost cried when I heard the song. Gosh! This song is genius and I see myself listening to it all day long. The verses caught me by surprise..but the buildup was terrific! Musically epic as well.
10/10

3. count down
The chorus seemed really suitable for a chinese MayDay song. (their a rock band). Hence, I didnt feel that it was bad since I have listened to chinese songs before. What I like is how raw this song is.
7/10

4. Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~
It was a good song. Suitable for quiet days and nights. But against count down and BALLAD, this song sort of pales. Not that I dislike it. I still love the piano and music behind it. Esp evident in the making-of
6.5/10

5. BALLAD
Though on first thought, I may want to listen to this song but yet when it starts to go and build up, I'm totally into it. I think it's one of Ayu's most gorgeous and epic tracks actually. Fantastic Music once again.
8/10

6. Last Links
I love the opening so much. Acoustic guitars really tingle your ears don't they. When it reached the chorus, i sensed Chinese songs again LOL. (but by F.I.R. this time.i mean its totally their style..just done better) I quite like this song. I plan to get another go at it because it was interesting and the chorus would definitely appeal to the mass audience im sure.
9/10

7. montage
Holy! What was that I just heard. The orchestra was shocking and haunting. Reminds me of Marionette's prelude somehow because of the atmosphere but I loved it.
9/10

8. Don't look back
This song shocked me. I never expected the arragement to be so powerful. The CM version (i can now say) FAIL! Yes this is totally fantastic coming from Ayu. Never expected such a style. The verses totally suit to be part of INSPIRE haha.
10/10

9. Jump!
Loved the opening. I swear there was a tinge of Load of the SHUGYO in the middle haha..but towards the end, it was ok. Would have totally suited as Rule's prelude.
6.5/10

10. Lady Dynamite
The opening totally drew me in. I read that its verses were strong but didn't really felt so. I like how there was this really pop-song sounding part before the chorus. Quite a surprise because it generated a different mood for the song. I have to say I LOVE THE MUSIC.
7.5/10

11. Sexy little things
Hhahah gosh. First time hearing it and the music makes it a win already. I like that it's so innovative and out-of-the-box. The swing genre sounds so fun here. Not much strain on Ayu's vocals too and I actually love them!
10/10

12. Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~
This is one of Ayu's tracks which I randomly hum along the way home. The chorus is so lively and very apt for the mood. After watching the making-of, the instrumental sounds great.
7/10

13. meaning of Love
Again, i did not expect Ayu to sing such a song. The melody is really...old school yet it's Superb. Being a first impression, I found myself liking it more than Last Links but then the end was kinda long actually. Nonetheless, I could totally see this on a chinese album too hahha! Very relatable and it felt like the next winding road/Replace.
8/10

14. You were...
I have heard this sooo much that I'm more interested in the new tracks at the moment. But despite having the typical winter ballad sound, you can't deny that the chorus packs a punch. That draws me into the totally. I love how its verses are very classic and demure and chorus just BAMS.
7.5/10

15. RED LINE ~for TA~ [Album Version]
Album or single version, I think it sounds great as a finisher. I felt really sad while hearing it again. The opening is lovely and Ayu's voice was great. I sense a slight difference in the music, being more layered and it had this atmosphere going on. The ending was *sobs* touching.
10/10 ^_^

Enjoyed it very much. After listening it once, I definitely got a Secret-esque vibe from the album. count down was pretty much the It Was of the album. The front was soooo raw while the electro part of the album was cool..then it went back to being raw. I mentioned how I like albums that have a full circle closure. NEXT LEVEL was pop->electro->rock-> pop. yet for me, the EMOTIONS (and not genre) of this album was a full circle.

OVERALL SCORE: 8.8/10 GREAT!

OH YES! PVs!!!

Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~ : 5/10
Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~ : 6/10
*but their making-ofs were very good*
You were... : 7/10
BALLAD : 8.5/10
Sexy little things : 9.5/10 (honestly wow! no idea what was it I just saw but WOW)
Microphone : 10/10 (FREAKYYY but I loved it...gonna rewatch many times)
*I LOVED HOW THESE TWO WERE LINKED!!!!!!!!!*
Don't look back : 10/10 (the twist was awesome)
Lady Dynamite : 6/10 (lol the opening was so long.)
*and ayu looked TOTALLY uncomfortable with Shimo*

gallowsCalibrator 12th April 2010 11:31 PM

This album is my definite favorite of all of Ayumi's previous albums. Listeners can tell she definitely tried her best for this, and it shows. With 10 new tracks (including the album version of RED LINE ~for TA), 4 single tracks, and 8 music videos, this album was very promising and did not disappoint me at all. The London influence on the album only added to this album being so amazing.

THE introduction- I must say, this track surprised me quite a bit. Despite the fact that it sounds much different from any of her other interludes and introductions, I found that it was very suitable for the beginning of this album. It's melody is haunting and very "circus" themed, and I think it fits in quite well with the album. In my opinion, its overall aura allows it to flow into Microphone well.

9/10

Microphone- I believe that Microphone is definitely the strongest track on this entire album. It starts off with a great instrumental solo, then moves on to Ayu's chanting of "hoh!," which became very addictive. She also chants "TELL ME WHY TELL ME WHY I DON'T KNOW I DON'T KNOW", which fits in perfectly with the song. The chorus is extremely catchy and powerful, and my favorite part of the song. The song itself is a rock song, which is my personal favorite, and I believe it to be her best. This was a very powerful song, and is truly "fierce Ayu." This is most certainly my favorite track, and what I believe to be the best on the album.

10/10

count down- This song began with a very haunting melody and Ayu's vocals are quite haunting too. The beginning of the song instantly had me hooked, and I stayed hooked throughout the rest of the track. The chorus is fitting for the song, and I wasn't disappointed. The only thing I felt was a flaw was that the song can get tiresome if listened to for a while. This wasn't a big problem, though. It was a very strong rock ballad, and I think it fit in well with the album.

9/10

Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~- The haunting melodies of the pas three tracks have been interrupted by this soothing summer ballad. I feel that it was a nice touch, though, and is a very beautiful song. Ayu's vocals are very relaxing and soothing. It is almost six minutes long, but that does not take away from the magical feeling coming from this track. This is a gorgeous addition to this album.

9.5/10

BALLAD- This is another ballad, with more of a winter feel. It has oriental instrumentals and puts Ayumi's vocals at her best. The chorus is very haunting, and Ayu's superb vocals and emotion send shivers down my spine when I hear this song. Listeners can really feel the emotion put into this song; along with the melody, it is absolutely phenominal. An excellent winter ballad with an excellent tune.

10/10

Last Links- Headphones are needed to truly understand the beautiful beginning. You literally hear what Ayu hears; sound in only one ear. This song is very inspirational and Ayu's emotions are portrayed clearly. The song is powerful and has a lovely melody. Ayu's vocals are not the greatest, but they are indeed very good. The chorus is dripping with emotion, and makes me put this song on "repeat" several times. A very gorgeous song for a very gorgeous album.

9.5/10

montage- The first interlude on the album, this is very, very haunting, much more so than the first three songs... It felt like...a climax, fo sorts. I was very impressed on the instrumentals of this interlude. Overall, I really loved it. The ending fit it perfectly as well.

9/10

Don't look back- This is another masterpiece, the second most powerful and best on the album next to Microphone. The sound of the song is Arabian theme, much like vogue and INSPIRE, but with its own charm and beauty. When Ayu begins to whisper "don't look back," I really felt for this song. This song is so catchy, I can listen to it for hours on end. The instrumentals are also very impressive and catchy. The chorus is my favorite part of the track, and is so powerful it gave me goosebumps. Ayu's vocals are perfect for this perfect track.

10/10

Jump!- The second interlude on the album, this song surprised me as well. It sounded very "bouncy" at the beginning, and when "Jump!" was being shouted, I felt that it got a little obnoxious sounding. However, I felt it was a good transition into Lady Dynamite, and was an okay song in itself.

8/10

Lady Dynamite- First, I must say that this song is so catchy that I can't stop listening to it. It is definitely a song that you can play over and over again. It is a great song for parties! The beat is very catchy and addictive, and I find myself wanting to get up and dance to it. The chorus is extremely addictive as well. This song has yet to get old to me. The entire song shows a very sassy side of Ayu, especially when coupled with the sassy lyrics. I think this is another amazing addition to this already amazing album. Ayumi's vocals were not too bad either. ;)

10/10

Sexy little things- The first "cutesy" song on the album, this is another insanely catchy song. It is very addictive and Ayu's vocals fit in perfectly with the atmosphere of this song. The chorus is especially catchy and makes me want to keep listening. The instrumentals are very "swingy" and match the song and lyrics amazingly. This whole song amazed me, and was unexpected due to the title, but was an instant favorite anyway. This fits in perfectly with the "circus" theme, in my opinion.

9.75/10

Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~- Right next to Sexy little things, this is the second "cutesy" song on the album. It is extremely upbeat and summery, and is great for dancing around. The chorus is easily remembered and very, very addictive. Ayu's vocals are full of happiness, which in turn can make the listener feel very upbeat and joyful. Overall, this is a great track that can lift your spirits at any time.

9/10

meaning of Love- This is a soothing ballad with even more soothing vocals. It is very inspirational to me, and has a beautiful melody. This is a beautiful ballad, but I felt that it could have been a bit better. However, my feelings for this gorgeous track do not change based on that at all. I think this yet another lovely song from Ayu, and well worth the listen.

9/10

You were...- This is a very sad, but powerful ballad. Ayu's vocals fit it beautifully. The chorus is full of so much emotion... You can really feel Ayu's pain. The instrumentals were amazing as well. This is definitely a favorite of mine. I feel that as the last ballad on the album, it served its purpose excellently, and is excellent as a song. A definite must-listen.

9.5/10

RED LINE ~FOR TA [album version]- At first, this seems like the same RED LINE from the You were.../BALLAD single... Until you reach the end, that is. The "laaaa la la laaaa" fades out... And Ayu's brilliantly beautiful a cappella is played. Her vocals were simply flawless here, and I felt it was a beautiful end to a beautiful album.

10/10

OVERALL: 9.42/10

I feel that this album was simply amazing. With amazing tracks, PVs, covers, and photobook, it was all I could have dreamed for. Ayu was certainly correct when she stated that, "This album...Rock 'n' Roll Circus... Is what I can honestly, right from my heart, undoubtedly call the best album I've produced in the entire time I was know as Hamasaki Ayumi." All I can say is, AMAZING work, Ayu! You have stunned me with this masterpiece :heart

NintendoHTF1242 15th April 2010 12:03 AM

THE introduction: The beginning is really boring but I love it when it actually "starts". Although I always seem to forget what this sounds like when I try to remember what it sounds like lol. 3/5

Microphone: This song took a long time to grow onto me. I really like the organ and guitar playing. The verse is really boring and draggy though. Not a bad song anyway. Takes a while to grow onto you. 3/5

count down: The intro is ANNOYING! But the piano is gorgeous. I think that this song is decent. It's slowly growing onto me every time I listen to it. 3/5

Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~: I will forever hate this boring atrocious piece of music. 1/5

BALLAD: My favorite single song (next to Sunrise). Gorgeous. 5/5

Last Links: I really like the guitar that starts off this song, and then the GORGEOUS cello playing. Then Ayu just has to add her band lol. Wish it was just the guitar and cello. 3/5

montage: This took me by surprise! I fell in love with it right as it started! Gorgeous! Amazing! Beautiful! Dark! Everything! =DD. 5/5

Don't look back: I want to like this song...But I just can't. Something about it just doesn't attract me. I hate the "Don't look back" parts to. But I love the PV for crazy Ayu <3. 3/5

Jump!: Wouldn't be an Ayu album without two interludes in three tracks haha! I hate this interlude, worst on the album. Nothing about it sticks out to me. 1/5

Lady Dynamite: I only like this song when watching the PV lol. Ayu's voice in the verse bothers me because she's doing something funky with it. 3/5

Sexy little things: Amazing, Catchy, Amazing, Super awesome, Catchy, Amazing, Love it so much. 6/5

Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~: This took a LONG time to grow onto me but it finally did! Love this song! 5/5

meaning of Love: Boring, nothing about this song stuck out to me. 2/5

You were...: I will always hate this song. Ayu's voice is pure crap. 1/5

RED LINE ~for TA~ [album version]: Average, not the best ending for an Ayu album. Just can't get into it. 2/5

So overall, pretty average album IMO.

Favorites: BALLAD, Sexy little things, montage, Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~
Least Favorites: Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~, Jump!, meaning of Love, You were...
