So from what I understood celebrities do it for donation/increase awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/(Lou Gehrig's disease.

"The Ice Bucket Challenge, sometimes called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, is an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on one's head to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)"

from wikipedia.

It sounds similar to the Spinocerebellar Ataxia disease/disorder (the one the aya from 1 litre of tears Japanese drama had).
