wow, you've been wondering this for more than 3 years? :D Well, may I comment here?

I have no doubt that literal translation of
"nemuku naru mae ni" is "before getting sleepy"

But I'm afraid "with it" of "sleepy with it" may be confusing.

My translation would be like this for related lines:
Quote:

『そこに居れば花は枯れる事なく咲き続けるさ』って
sokoni ireba hana wa kareru koto naku saki tudukeru sa tte
"If you are there, flowers won't die down and will keep blooming"

何の冒険もなく刺激もない保険だけをかけた寝言に
nanno bouken mo naku shigeki mo nai hoken dake wo kaketa negoto ni
No adventure, no excitement, but just insurance is in your sleep talking

つられて眠くなる前に行くわ
tsurarete nemuku naru mae ni ikuwa
Before getting sleepy hearing it, I'll go

欲しいのは、そう、JUST 1 LOVE
hoshii no wa, sou, just one love
What I want is, yes, JUST 1 LOVE.
"negoto" is "sleep talking" but it can also mean "nonsense" or something you say when you don't know/understand the real situation(s).

So, hearing this song, it's natural to have a picture in which one person is not sleeping but talking unrealistic things and the other is getting tired of hearing them.

I hope this helps your interpretation. :)

I used to hate this song but when I read the translation and even translated it into finnish I realized how amazing song this really is. <3

@truehappiness: thanks for reviving the thread! i had the same question! xD

Thanks for the translation.
I think i have an idea of what the song means

Also, "to get tired of" would be a different verb ("akiru", most likely). Even though it's kind of on the liberal side, I would probably translate the "nemuku naru mae ni" part in the lyrics as "before it puts me to sleep", haha. ;)

Ah, "before it puts me sleep" is nice because there'd be no need of "hear", which is in my translation but not in ayu's original lyrics. :P

The question is how to convey the nuance of "tsurarete" of "tsurarete nemuku naru mae ni". I haven't come up with an excellent idea yet... (And I think "puts me to sleep" and "makes me sleepy" are different things.)

Now I think I would translate it as ...:

> "If you are there, flowers won't die down and will keep blooming"
> No adventure, no excitement, but just insurance is in your sleep talking
> Before it makes me sleepy, I'll go
> What I want is, yes, JUST 1 LOVE

Is "before I get sleepy with it" strange, grammatically? I'd like to hear the opinions of native speakers of English on this point. If so, I may have to change the part.

truehappiness 2nd April 2010 11:50 AM

I recall when I first read the translation in 2006, I thought it felt strange... like people usually don't say "Stop it before I get sleepy!"...

Usually, it's more like... "Stop, before I get tired!" or something.

Unfortunately, we haven't heard other members' opinions.
Well, I don't want to change the part to "before I get tired" as you say. Because "nemuku naru" is "get sleepy". I think using the word "sleepy" is desirable in this case. And the translation of "get tired" would be "tsukareru", "akiru" or "unzari suru". But I've come to think that changing this part to "before it puts me to sleep" (Peachilicious's suggestion) might be good.

truehappiness 4th April 2010 07:21 PM

Ah, that makes sense. I suppose it just depends on how other members feel.

"Before it puts me to sleep" sounds good imo.

Thank you so much for translation! I love these lyrics :D

yuki_unmei 4th April 2010 08:11 PM

"Before it puts me to sleep" is much better :yes

"Before i get sleepy with it" has never sounded right to me.

AyUta 4th April 2010 10:33 PM

^ Exactly.

masa 5th April 2010 09:58 AM

OK. I change the part, according to Peachilicious's suggestion. Thanks.
