Nope, this is not a thread on how Pieces of SEVEN fails as in interlude.

I don't know if anyone feels like this, but I feel these 3 songs are connected.

For one, do you realize LOVE 'n' HATE and Days are very similar? They both talk about the feelings faced when you have a crush! But LOVE 'n' HATE is the more sexy/edgy outlook to it, while Days is the more demure and tamed outlook.

Some comparison...

"I knew from the start
That it's really impossible
Even so ..."

LOVE 'n' HATE

vs

"I've known for a long time that you have someone precious
Because it's clear from your smile"

Days

Also, another thing to note is this:

"I only wanted to dream
That my dream would come true
Just for a moment"

LOVE 'n' HATE

Yeah, a dream. And what happens in the Days PV? She dreams~

Well, I think both songs are having a crush on someone who already is attached or something. I might even go to the extent of saying she might have a crush on someone gay (yeah let's bring the ayuxshu-ya fanshipping to it ultimate! :lech)... impossible crush?

Now, that's not the main point. I just think LOVE 'n' HATE and Days are mirrors of each other. They both talk about the same thing, but in very different perspectives. It's like STEP you Ayu #2 and STEP you Ayu #3, if you get what I mean...

Now, how does Pieces of SEVEN connect these two?

Remember that in LOVE 'n' HATE, she sings about counting in the heart... "1 2 3 4 5 6 7 0", she counted 7 times (not 8, cos at the 8th beat, she sings 0 instead)... SEVEN much.

Also, in the Days PV, when Ayu was in her 'dream' with Shu-ya, she woke up at 6am. When she was in 'reality', she woke up at 8 01am. Disregarding that one minute, we can say that the times were 6am and 8am respectively.

So what's the number in between? SEVEN.

I seriously now think that Pieces of SEVEN is a good connection between LOVE 'n' HATE and Days. Lol... pardon me for this, but I can't help it when my favorite album track, favorite interlude and favorite single song/song in general is lined up after one another! :D

yay! nice analysis, thank you !

remember she also had a crush on someone gay in her role in "Like Grands of Sand" movie so that would be not the first time (ok, it's not real right?)

I think Days is about Nagase, if she still loves him I really hope Nagase come back with her some day soon ^^ I wanna see Ayu happy :)

Emperatriz Ayumi 26th March 2009 09:35 AM

Very good interpretation!!!

For me, Go-Mi is 100% gay, I donīt know if Shu-ya is but I hope Maro and Ryuji are gays.... I love them BOTH!!!!!!

I WANT TO MARRY BOTH!!!!!!!:love:love:love:love:love

Love'n'Hate also seems pretty obviously about him, at least to me. :) It doesn't sound like this song is about a crush at all, but about a past love who she wanted to love fully but for whatever reason inside of herself she was not able to. Nagase wanted the relationship to get more serious for a long time (hence why he stuck around for 7 years), but its commonly believed that Ayu was the one holding back. I think Love'n'Hate's lyrics express her mixed feelings about that.

I thought "Days" was about Nagase until the full lyrics came out. The second verse just doesn't fit, in my opinion.

This part of "LOVE'n'HATE"
Quote:

I knew from the start
That it's really impossible
Even so ...

I only wanted to dream
That my dream would come true
Just for a moment

I took the courage to approach you
Because I wanted to be loved by you
But I stayed as far as I could from you
Because I didn't want to be disliked by you
kind of reminds me of "Together When...".
Quote:

We believed
We found out one unchanged thing
But we felt it was changing
And took a step back
Yet another step back afterwards
So as not to be hurt
I doubt that ayu was the one holding back, really. The lyrics of "CAROLS" are a good indication for it. Maybe she wasn't ready for marriage, but she seemed to have been ready to share her life with him, judging by her lyrics.

wow... i am getting a headache ... it's sooo complicated

Oh that's really insightful! But well in LOVE 'n' HATE, she also sings about something being "impossible from the start", I mean Nagase and her were after all, a couple, so I don't know why she would think it was impossible, unless she meant future (of being with him).

Also in Days... I don't know, she surely doesn't get to be around him for her heart to be warm right lol!

I wouldn't rule out these 3 songs being somewhat inspired/related to Nagase, but for me, the songs that are 100% about Nagase would be CAROLS, fated and Together When..., maybe even In The Corner.

But of course Ayu would also write songs based on her friends' experience (yeah for all we know Days and LOVE 'n' HATE might be songs she wrote for Shu-ya on his crush on ZIN :innocent:lech:P), so not all songs are totally related to her.

Aga-chan 26th March 2009 02:17 PM

^The question is what was "impossible from the start". Maybe she's refering to the "unchanging thing" that she sings about in "Close to you" and "Together When...". Maybe she wanted to believe in the "unchanging thing" and "forever" yet had doubts.
Also, Nagase seems to have a different personality from ayu's. So maybe she was doubtful, but thought it would work out despite their differences.

Yes, I believe that is what she means. I think Happy Ending also demonstrates that feeling pretty blatantly. I think Nagase in the end just got tired of waiting - and really, who can blame him after 7 years? But at the same time, if Ayu's not ready, she's not ready. I think Love'n'Hate expresses her frustration with that - She WANTED to be ready and to believe that they could have a happy ending, but in the end she just couldn't do it and that in a way, she wishes that in the end, he wasn't so nice and would actually hate her. (maybe she has some feelings of guilt about being in a relationship with him for 7 years when she knew deep in her heart that it wasn't going to work, but she kept continuing anyways.) Nagase, if you know his personality, is the type of guy that throws himself 100% into something with seemingly no doubts - very opposite from Ayu.

waterballoon 27th March 2009 03:30 AM

^ Hahaha, well GUILTY makes much more sense now. :yes

LOVE 'n' HATE is an interesting song. One thing that I feel from the newer songs is that she's somehow writing about things that are irrelevant to her (like crushes), but somehow makes subtle references to herself as well... something like:

*while writing LOVE 'n' HATE*
Oh, Shu-ya has a crush on ZIN! I'll write something on that...

"It was impossible from the start"... yes, yes Shu-ya knows it's impossible; oh perfect, this will be a good subtle reference to my impossible future with Nagase too~

Or at least that's how I feel, because in LOVE 'n' HATE, there's no direct reference unlike Together When... where we know she's 100% talking about Nagase. Maybe she's writing about crushes to distract us from the fact that she really wants to sing about Nagase. Hahaha.

wow waterballoon u sounds so pro leh ^^

Andrenekoi 10th April 2009 06:20 PM

Not all her songs need to be about her life... didn't she said she wasn't writing only about herself on I am... era or something?

This "mixed love feelings" is a very universal theme...

waterballoon 10th April 2009 06:28 PM

Since this thread was bumped... ^^

Generally, lyrics from Ayu are always about

1) herself
2) her friends
3) people

Therefore, it's highly possible that for these set of songs, she would have incorporated all 3 sources of her lyrics. I mean I sometimes write lyrics while thinking of what my friends go through themselves too.

Andrenekoi 10th April 2009 06:41 PM

/\
Yeah... and why this one couldn't be about 2) her friends or 3) people?
I think that ayu fans are a little obsessed about her father and now, nagase @_@

I mean... if all ayu love songs (the ones she had after dating he) were about nagase, their relationship was terrible... most of her love songs are sad...

Aga-chan 10th April 2009 07:33 PM

^Actually the same can be said the other way around, that some fans are obsessed with songs NOT being about Nagase.
I personally don't think every love song since they began dating is about him, though.

waterballoon 10th April 2009 07:36 PM

^ Hahaha, well, we can never know what REALLY happens behind closed doors, but oh well.

But in any case, whoever she's writing these songs towards to, I'm so curious and happy (?, what word should I use...) about the THEME of it all.

NEXT LEVEL, imo, relies heavily on arrangement and theme and wow this trio of songs surely hit home for theme.

sailorseraphim 11th April 2009 06:58 AM

ahhhh i love the connection!!!!

and i have a theory about Ayu's male dancers: gay until proven straight. it makes the world a happier place. :) lolz

but a couple of them are really obvious (Gomi & Shuya)

chloeM 11th April 2009 07:12 AM

nice interpretation... if shuya's gay... i'm happy for him
