Happy 9th Anniversary Party Queen! Such an iconic album. When I got it last year it felt so good. It's just so unique and in a very good way.
Recently I subbed "Letter" so I'll just leave it here ;) |
Happy anniversary Party Queen! One of my favorites albums! it's on my top 5 :laugh
|
I always thought that Party Queen as an album is the conceptually strongest among all her work. Unfortunately the vocal, mixing, and the arrangement for the titular track were a mess.
But the structure, the rawness of the entire rock ballad section unseen in her other albums, and the exploration of new genres, as well as the flow, makes it truly unique in a good way. This is the only album of hers where the tracks tell one story from beginning to end, in my opinion. This period is also when her personal life news got a bit out of hand and causes major controversy. To me, in a way, the shattering of the strict separation between ayu the person and ayumi the product was quite avante garde |
I still think PQ has terrible covers, but I was thinking how, IMO, they could have been infinitely better as textless, unedited (without the leopard print) shots.
Also, if they added a slight blur effect (like Fiona Apple’s Tidal album) it would’ve given that underlying message of not everything is as perfect as it seems. Perhaps this wouldn’t have worked for the actual images chosen, but from the same photo shoot. Because the actual images are nice, in fact I love how Ayu looked during this era. It was the over editing that ruined them for me haha. I get what they were going for, but it feels a little too... on the nose, if that makes sense. In terms of the music, it’s certainly grown on me over the years. But I still rank it towards the bottom of my list. But I do give it credit for being cohesive and conceptual. |
Party Queen. Her worst album ever. I'm trying to forget it exists.
|
For a while I didn't know if this or Love Songs was my favorite album from her... In the end of the day, Party Queen won the battle. Besides the whole concept, I really love how self aware she feels in the lyrics. For the first time as far as I remember this wasn't Ayu singing about how the world hurts her, but about how she can also be messed up and hurt others.
|
^I still think Love songs is much stronger and refined (it's my favourite album of hers), but for me they've always worked so well together, like two acts of a long story!
Weirdly enough that's why I'm not too bothered by the poor mixing on Party Queen, it's part of its charm. Where Love songs was elevated and classy, Party Queen is almost like an experiment, much more raw and in a sense, real! And the lyrics for the next LOVE are in my top 3 lyrics for her ever, so much sadness in that song! |
^Love Songs still is strongly on the 2nd position of my ranking lol

"Reminds me", so dark and relatable. Then sth quite opposite that comes to my mind and it's Ohia ^^ A song to her child definitely stands out :)

I actually never realised before trying to make a list that Party Queen resonated so well with me ahaha! I loved the lyrics to Tell me why, reminds me, the next LOVE and Eyes, Smoke, Magic (I know, you can be banned from the fandom just by mentioning this name but I love how crude and sad and critical the lyrics are), and even Party queen to an extent. Ivy is definitely a strong contender on Love AGAIN, I thought SAKURA and petal were great too! After that, NOW & 4EVA, NO FUTURE, Breakdown, just to name a few... Walk actually made me cry, not the first time I listened to it, but the first time I listened to it with the translation. |
Party queen is one of my favorites albums from her, if not the most. Not so long ago I made a list of the number of songs I loved on all her albums, and Party Queen was the one with most tracks lol I find it really cohesive in every possible way. Musically is great, lyrically show us a really human Ayu I truly love, and visually I find it really different and attractive. I love the covers, I find them quite unique among her catalogue, but it really pisses me off the fact that they used this photoshoot that was initially made to be used on a book instead of the original Party Queen one. If only they used those pictures, it would have been her most beautiful cover ever, a perfect mixture between a beauty shoot and a concept, and awesomely done. I’m glad we got to see those pictures on the super Ayu photobook, but really, who had the idea to replace those shots for the ones used??
Completely unrelated but, I recently started appreciating aeternal?? What is happening to me right now? |
So straight, so straight, always misunderstood
Nobody really understands you But you try, you try It’s ok even if you’re uncool I like you just that way Everyone has one or two things Which they wish they could forget But what they cannot forget Is the pain of knowing that they cannot afford to forget Others call it interesting and ridiculous How we were together No matter how understanding anyone looks As they talk about us Yes, the two of us cannot be understood by anyone else Why do you always shoulder everything On your own, suffering alone? Why do you take all the blame for this Saying it’s all your fault? That thing which they call love Just where can I find it? What does it look like? How much do I need to pay? Hey, where did you buy it? You don’t know how beautiful you are |
The only thing I hate about Party queen is that it looks like she have only one arm on the cover.
|
I posted snippets of a few Ayu songs. And um i'm not sure but, i think i got a curiosity sparked from my co-workers. Mind you i work in an alternative clothing online store. All them chicks are hardcore goths :D But Ayu has some dark rock tracks so....If they let me play the j-rock playlist at work, i might get some interesting audience tomorrow :D

Love Songs is my favorite album ever from her, but Party Queen is my second favorite. I think Love Songs-Party Queen-LOVE again trilogy is my favourite part of Ayu's entire career, the time she was most bold and tried to do stuff that wasn't necessarily beautiful or "enjoyable" for everyone and conveyed her feelings with sincerity (sometimes it was too painful, like Party Queen most confessional tracks, but really brave at the same time). Quote:
|
^YES! I love the 'fakeness' behind the apparently bubbly atmosphere of Party queen (the song)! She obviously made it even more obvious (maybe a bit too on the nose) with the 'I am a lonely queen' lines she added in one of the concerts, but even in the original album the idea is clearly there, that line being in NaNaNa.
I think you may have finally reconciled me with the loss of the original photoshoot :laugh I like that explanation, that the cover is intended to be uncomfortable too! I guess I never saw Love AGAIN as part of the trilogy but it makes sense. I've always found Love AGAIN unintentionally sad because it sounded like she was trying to replicate an album/a relationship. I probably don't love it as much as the other two but it was so exciting to have another trilogy of clips, and there are a lot of good tracks on there too! |
Quote:
For me, Love Songs is Ayu reflecting about all the types of relationship (romantic, with music and career, her mother, her fans) in a dream-like perspective, while Party Queen is the decadence of love (including self love). She uses party and alcohol to escape from the cruel reality of loss, but then she faces the ugly truth, reflects about her flaws, think about a cynical point of view of love (the next LOVE), a child's point of view of a disfunctional family core (Eyes, Smoke, Magic) that could explain this cynicism about love and finally gives herself forgiveness (how beautiful you are, that is a love letter, maybe to herself and for us fans at the same time). LOVE again closes the trilogy bringing a more mature take of love, not cynical like Party Queen, not over-romanticized or idealized like Love Songs, but more down-to-earth love. She's looking at the past and allowing herself to love again (and that's why I like You & Me closing the narrative, because it's a song about a love from the past, with good and sad memories, but she's choosing to keep the good ones with her). Other cool thing about it: the album starts with Wake me up and ends with Ivy-You & Me. LOVE again's photo book starts with her in the bed, waking up, continues showing her rolling over the bed and it finishes with Ayu leaving the bedroom (like Sweet scar PV, when she leaves the allegedly comfort of her house and go outside without looking back), maybe signaling she's ready to live her life fully once again. Oh, if I'm not wrong, during "Party Queen" promotion, she did some interviews and people was asking her why the album was called Party Queen and she said is her "position" on society and that's how she's perceived by the people. However, some people was not getting the point of the loneliness of the "party queen" role and that's why she was more "on the nose" — which I generally don't like when artists in general do, but damn, that break is so good at the tour! haha |
The funny thing about party queen though is... no one really perceived Ayu in that way? (A crazy partier that is.)
Drama queen would have been a more apt title in reference to how she’s perceived. I mean based on her social media presence it doesn’t even look like Ayu has friends outside her colleagues lol. Not that that’s an issue, but I mean, it’s not like she was Britney of Paris or Lindsay-level party girl. If she made it like a character or alter ego a la Madonna’s Erotica album or Sasha Fierce I wonder if I’d have been more interested in it lol. |

There was also a recent post here on the forum where someone said a japanese friend told they Ayu fandom was seemed as trashy party people. Quote:

LOVE again is fantastic IMO and I hate how the whole EP situation kind of ruined the album's reputation and/or perception for a lot of people. I'm pretty glad that this didn't affect me. :'D
Also, Party Queen is one of my favourite Ayu albums. I'm so happy to see that there are more and more people enjoying it as time goes on. :heart |
Quote:
Not to say if Ayu did or didn't do anything, but things like "has multiple STDs" just sounds like the kind of thing people say when they decide a girl is a slut, so OF COURSE she must have had them. Hikki never had that image, so of course no one spread such rumors about her. She's divorced multiple husbands just like Ayu at just as young an age, but she's quieter. |

Can we organize a play day for A BALLADS 2's release????
To boost views on youtube, streams on spotify, etc? |
I recently had a CD player installed in my car and the speakers are pretty good. I hadn't had any real good Ayu sessions for a while so I've listening to her discography quite a bit and was completely floored by Love Songs all over again. For me, it is definitely in my top 3 favorite albums of hers. It's so powerful, epic, and beautifully sewn together. I think it's just top notch.
And my sister really enjoyed it and asked for a copy. The album that overwhelms me is Guilty. The tone of that album is haunting and potent, and leaves me feeling honestly quite raw. And it hit me while listening to it that they should have made an orchestrated version of it. Literally EVERY SINGLE song on there would so amazing that way! When I realized this, I actually felt extremely frustrated because it feels like a hopeless desire, yet it could have been truly satisfying!!! |
^Agree on both counts. Add into the fact the album was a surprise coming out so soon after Rock n Roll Circus, was a complete 180 change from that album and was the first time Ayu return to a nostalgic 90s sound (but in a fresh way) just make it such a highlight in her career.
And yes, Guilty really has such a darkness to it. It really encompasses that dark time in Ayu's life. But thats what makes it so beautiful, artful and raw. And we have the followup of Next Level to brighten things up :) |
The darkness of Guilty I think actually played a big part in my disconnect from it during its release. At the time I was 17? 18? And really enjoying and loving where I was in life. So the album being in direct contrast to how I was feeling actually kept me from enjoying it as much as her previous work. I appreciate it MUCH more now that I have life experience haha. I certainly listened to it a lot, but I didn’t really “feel” it until later in life. Though it’s still quite a heavy album and not something I often listen to in full. Fated is probably the song that stands out to me most. I wish it was more popular. I’m very excited to hear the remastered version.
|
Fated is one of my faves. A proper rock ballad. Its just so sorrowful and angsty but in a chilled out, worn out way with a glimmer of hope. Such a beautiful piece of music.
Guilty was actually my first full Ayu album. I had a few of her singles and my fandom was just being born when I did an exchange trip in Japan. Mirrorcle World had just come out so I had my host family bring me to the CD stores to buy it and thats when I saw Guilty on the shelf. My mind was BLOWN hearing talkin 2 myself lol At the time I couldn't believe a "pop diva" had made such a hard rock sounding pop song. I was hooked! |
Guilty is probably my favourite album, and it's attached to so many great memories of that time (meeting Ayu in Paris, Mirrorcle World, 10 years anniversary etc.). I think it made me go 'crazy fan' as well haha! I genuinely love all the songs in there and the different atmospheres.
Personally never been a fan of Party Queen - I mostly play the call->Tell my why section and be done with it :rolleyes Which photo was supposed to be the cover and got replaced? I can't remember now...:irked |
So much happened during/for the GUILTY era!
We learned about her hearing loss, her close friend passed away, she didn't hit #1 with it... I personally love it so much, it's hard to listen to nowadays, I have to be in the mood for it. I was also 17 when it came out. |
I love GUILTY since I was in a pretty dark moment when it came out and it actually helped me to get through it, it's a very special album for me :yes
btw Dearest was trending in Japan after the TV show Premium Music 2021 broadcasted a live performance from 2001 (not sure which one exactly) and there were over 16K tweets about it in less than an hour, HER POWER :laugh |

^same. I honestly find the whole 2012 to be visually iconic. She lived for the looks lol Everyone hated a summer best cover, but I looove it. Is there a poster of it?

|
Quote:
|
^Well dead is still not broken up, plus we don't know if that dude ended up dead :P But you know what i mean :D It's kind of ironic how both of the guys she dated and had in videos with break ups, ended up just the same in real life, she might have jinxed herself lol
|
^lol you're right haha
Moments turned 17 years old today! one of my favorite songs ever :love |

I knew immediately that ayu wouldn't last with mannie nor grass-eating maro, seeing the kind of videos she put them in. breakup? death? domestic violence? are ye tempting faith just a wee bit? (The answer is yes!) Also, I am certain that putting your significant other in your music video/movie/whathaveyou to be relationship poison... just like couple tattoos! SO many celebrities do these kind of things and prove to be jinxing their relationship that way... |

I think personally what ruined PQ for me were her vocals. She was overdoing the new technique she had learned to the point where her timbre changed and she sounded like a duck (namely call). And it wasn't like her vocal cords were in the best condition as well at the time... I think she herself might've realized it as well, hence why she toned it down in the EPs released later that year.
Since PQ, she has made numerous efforts to sound closer to her previous voice, but she would always fall back to the duck-like technique if her vocal cords are getting tired/worn out during a live performance. I do wonder if it's easier on your cords when you sing like that... |
Don't think I'd like the title 'Empress', sounds a bit pompous!
Shame it's just a joke but it reminded me of all the fake album/single names, I don't know why I always loved checking fake 'leaked' tracklists! What's a fake leak that could can still remember to this day? EGG doesn't count :laugh For me it's the Glowing/GREEN single from when GREEN was previewed in the Panasonic ad. I always thought it worked really well as a single name! It might even just have been from this forum's fanwork section and never presented as a leak, I can't remember. |
I always think it's a little awkward when someone gives themselve those titles like "king", "queen', "empress". etc. Even when Ayu use this on her own songs, it's either said by someone else (Happening Here) or she is singing someone else's lyrics (My Way).

Yeah but party queen feels like a self mockery rather than she thinking she's an actual queen, she talks about being the queen of the party but the lyrics are all about alcoholism and "forget about your problems tonight" but then the album changes to a really depressive section so I don't think it's with the intention to show herself as THE QUEEN but rather she's saying "You think I'm a queen but this how really I am", love it or hate it, this album has some of her most personal lyrics, just like the covers, I think they are messy on purpouse, to show a shallow "fun and sexy" image (how people perceive her) in contrast to how she perceives herself.
I always say this but personally I feel you need to think in Party Queen as a whole "party drinking night goes wrong", she starts with fun and messy songs but then gets all depressive (just like when you're wasted late in the night and all your energy turns into sorrow) then comes the "jazz" section and messy as it is, those songs have some really good lyrics, very reflexive in some way "Yes, my best friends are Diamonds and roses, Is there anything more valuable? Mama didn't teach me about that" that's one of her saddest lyrics imo intentionally trying to sound sassy but just feels like she's talking how shallow her life was at that point. And after she's sober up, she closes with HBYA a self-acceptance song, for her and for everyone, and yeah that was my little and very personal take on Party Queen, sorry for the long post lol so to summarize things, when she says "I'm the party queen" it feels like she's being sarcastic instead of pompous. |
^Yep. Party Queen is about she being a big mess, not about being music royalty.

Popular Youtuber Haichi (He shares lessons and educational tutorials) confessed he suffered a lot of bullying back in school so he was interviewed to talk more about this issue, during his interview and when he was asked if back then he got some kind of support he said Ayu's "A song for XX" helped him (rough translation I did, if I did any mistake or someone can make a better one please post it here as well!)
"When you were suffering this bullying, did you have any kind of external support? Haichi: If I think about support, only one song comes to mind. Now I'm a 36-year-old man, but Ayumi Hamasaki marked a whole generation. At that time, I used to listen to" A song for XX "very often, it has a very dark lyrics that talk about not having a place to belong, but when I listened to it I felt very happy and relieved, it was as if she was talking about my own suffering. This is why I listened to this song about 100 times a day to full volume with my headphones. " The "ayu part" comes around at 05:44! I think what he said was really nice. |
We’re finally at the point where people are reflecting on Ayu’s influence on them. I feel like it’s taken forever! Lol
I don’t know that you tuber but it’s nice that he was able to find support in Ayu like that. |
Happy 23rd Anniversary ^^
Ayu play day starts with 23rd Monster, followed by A BALLADS 2, and then I'll probably listen to her entire discography haha |
I still don't get the Love Song-Last angel-Virgin Road trilogy lol
Like... was she alive in LS? Or already dead? Because at the end of the video she's dead? Did the police kill her? And in LA, who is the other girl? Who was she running away from? In VR are they in their ideal "heaven"? I am confucius :dead2 |

If I were going to give it a take, Mannie is haunting Ayu, either literally as a ghost (he steps on a puddle and no water spashes in Love song) or as an ex-lover she can't move over from. She dies and goes living an idealized romantic afterlife with him, either literally or as a projection she has of him as a lover. |

I was just thinking which album was the first one I didn’t fully enjoy. That would be RnRC. There are some songs on this album that I don’t listen to at all. Such as: Last Links, meaning of Love, Sunset and Sexy little things. Love songs is an exception. I love all the songs on this album. And after that, there are songs on every album that I don't listen to at all and I don't like them very much. But before RnRC, I love all the songs on all the albums. There’s only one song from older albums that I don’t like, and that’s girlish. This song is so annoying. Is there anyone who loves this song? How perfect it would be if the last song on the Duty album was ever free. That would be the perfect ending. I just wanted to share my thoughts.
|
^for me there is not a single song I don't listen to here and there but there is a list of songs I don't listen to on purpose or I dislike for a reason or another.
It's not limited to never music but spread across all of them. Examples are: half of ASFXX ( including FRIEND, Wishing, As if.., For My Dear, Present and Two of us), LOVE destiny, Grateful Days, connected, Hello New me, Angel, ever free, Key, beloved, kanariya, sakura, Thank u, close to you, red line, my all ... just to name a few also angels song and honey are not always welcome, yet i don't dislike them. |
6 years ago she started the Cirque de Minuit Tour! My favorite concert and also the first time I saw her live <3
|
My brain can’t handle that 2015 was 6 years ago. It was an awesome tour indeed.

Time has flown by in the Just the beginning / TROUBLE era but I wonder where things will go now with MUSIC for LIFE and the Asia tour... and beyond?

I would scream to see her perform As if... Although I'm not sure how that would sound with her current voice. As if... is my second favorite song on the ASFXX album.

^ I think she'd sound fine. Everybody was wondering (and a little worried) what kanariya would sound like and when she finally sang it, it turned out pretty good.
|
Just for fun on the Pei rumors, I saw on Insta that he posted this photo last month:
Spoiler:
... and guess what shoes are shown on Ayu's Insta Spoiler:
coincidence?:P |
^HA, nice one.
SO, has anyone ever wondered what the fabric is that Ayu has been using a lot in her live show wardrobe? The flowy stuff that she used for one of her performances of Together When at CDL '12-'13? And also the Brillante one on that red dress..I've always wondered what it was, and i think i just randomly found it. It's "super organza" most likely made by Amaike company (they are japanese) it's the lightest fabric that exists - about one fifth or sixth the thickness of a hair. No wonder it looks so magical when it moves. |
