That's true. Everyones saying that she didn't really promot it. This might be true for Rule/Sparkle and NEXT LEVEL - which was poorly promoted. But Sunset/Sunrise wasn't. So you cannot really say that.

It stopped charting already?! Does Oricon count singles and albums that chart below the 300 radar? If so then the year end numbers may show +110K

She isn't the only one who should promote her singles, she did all she could, however I am pretty sure AVEX didn't.

And what would avex do more than having some billboards?
It's not like putting ayu's face everywhere is going make her sales to rise like magic...

I dunno, I know almost nothing about managing a record label :innocent there is always something that can be done. They could've organized hand shaking events or a small outdoor concert on a beach, they could've made more versions of the single with DIFFERENT (and appealing) covers, throw in some more remixes or add other bonuses, make a Barby doll that looks like Ayu on the covers (she already looks plastic enough in that photo), I dunno there are other more creative ways to promote a release other than billboards and music/o.jp CMs - in other words make the release more worthy of the money that you want people to spend. I mean I ordered the CD only version and I didn't even bother opening it, as I already downloaded the songs and there was nothing interesting inside xD

I think you were.../BALLAD will sell better than S/S of course since it will be released near xmas and holiday which always have better to sell like D/G and most of all Ayu's albums

1. shaking hands event = a Big "no, no, no" after the Shibuiya incident xD

2. Small concert on a beach = Ayu was touring, either At09 or a-nation

3. More versions/remixes/etc = it's up to Ayu (and IMO it's nice to see how well she sells without 500 versions and promotional discs made of gold :B)

If her face is everywhere, people will start to think this single must really be quite something. People will start to think EVERYONE knows about it and EVERYONE is buying it (otherwise her face wouldn't be all over the place, right?)

Sure, it wouldn't affect her fan-sales, but it would raise regular shopper's sales, also gift-giving or something. It would also raise her reputation and epicness.

However.. in the case if Sunrise/Sunset it wouldn't have worked since the covers are ugly. But imagine a stunningly GORGEOUS cover for You were.../BALLAD (imagine A COMPLETE 3CD+DVD , cover meets snow, darkness and Ayu smiling beautifuly).. Then imagine that cover being all over the place, all over billboards in Tokyo, all over the TV.

I'm very sure that would boost her sales, as well as her reputation.

^ The problem is You were...'s cover might be 75% like Sunrise, and I would feel so embarrassed for her if the cover was like everywhere in Shibuya lol

People are not going to buy it because of billboards... It makes people know she released something new, but liking the song or disliking it affect the sales a lot more than having Ayu's face everywhere

Well, that's what I'm saying... it had good promotion... it had billboards... there were posters and tvs showing the pvs at stores... there were lives... there were a tie-in... there were cms...

Over-ayuming Japan would not make it sell better...

Actually I'm sure that if it had more than the billboards it had it could do a bit better at least physically and maybe reach the million digitally.
It seems that the songs for the single were not the problem if Sunrise could do digitally what it did and it probably was one of ayu's least promoted releases billboardwise.
Not even a shibuya 109 poster.
I agree though that those covers might have turned a lot off. :P
