They must have been saving for the last few years then.
I feel as though each year has at least one big budget PV [that is perhaps ruined by a bad director or what not..]~ haha.

2005 - fairyland / alterna.. fairyland taking up a lot of budget, and alterna having a really good director that made use of the money he had.. [I'm sure she's explained why that cost so much.. haha.. somewhere..]
2006 - JEWEL.. lots of jewels, I guess? 1 LOVE kind of falls into the alterna-y director category.
2007 - glitter/fated.. I don't even want to..
2008 - GREEN? Mirrorcle World? Both were overseas, so I imagine they spent quite a bit on them, even though they were far from good.. [2008-2009 seems to lack really 'great' PVs.. oi. She's been using TakahideKazu-combo for too long, imo. With very sparse
Tetsuo/Wataru..]
2009 - ?

I hate that word. Not everyone's an Ayu anti either though. -sigh-

^GREEN budget was 1,800,000 dollars... Actually, since Rainbow she is having one bigger pv per album (Memorial Address not counted cuz it's a mini-album):

RAINBOW: Tsuki ni Shizumu
My Story: My name's WOMEN
(miss)understood: fairyland
Secret: JEWEL
GUILTY: Distant Love
NEXT LEVEL: GREEN

Actually, fairyland is the most expensive music video ever done in Japan, and fairyland, JEWEL, My name's WOMEN and GREEN are among the most expensive ever done in the world...

Of those, I just hate the cheap looking of Tsuki ni Shizumi and find fairyland VERY boring... really like the other ones and GREEN is one of my favorite music videos ever ^^

2005 doesn't count because she was still making excellent PVs then. Or I should say up until the end of 2005 (B&D seems to have been what started it.) Everything from 2006 on has been on an extreme downhill spiral no matter what the budget is with only a couple of PVs that make it into at least the 'pretty good' category. If any of those PVs that you listed actually had huge budgets, none of them successfully maximized on that budget.

I forget to say that this is only your opinion =)

Aisha_Angel 8th August 2009 06:11 AM

At least Bold & Delicious had a theme that matched the song. It's not my ultra-fav, but it is one of my favorites in terms of Ayu's recent low-budget bs videos.

waterballoon 8th August 2009 06:15 AM

I think it's possible to shoot a good PV with a low budget. Days was like in a studio (momentum as well), and I found both PVs to be excellent.

For Sunset... it's sad that I have to watch it when I'm feel so sleepy... I slept like after the first chorus... and she's really faraway. I mean she COULD have stood on the platform nearest to the fans... and the dancing is bad, sorry. It doesn't fit, and I don't understand why it's even needed. I know girls spend more money on shopping, but it doesn't mean Ayu NEEDS to get the girls to be on a PV so that they can get extra munny... : /

(miss)understood 8th August 2009 06:26 AM

It sucked. Boring and the fans only looked like they enjoyed it for a split second.

Ayumi was pretty but there was not enough of her.

too much dancing and the dancing was not fitting to the feel of the song and i hated them because they took the cake, not ayu

and because the set was the exact same as sunrise,
it was needing a huge surprise factor
which it didnt have

and all the BS about ayu not having good pvs

i've loved every pv she has released minus sunset, next level, and uh

This PV just really let me down
what a downer
*flush*

Yes, I also noticed this turning point for the worst after B&D. From this point on, my disappointment had been rising, while my expectations had been falling. I'm not even looking forward to any of her future PVs because they are so poorly done. The connection's just not there anymore...

I thought Pride was beautifully done, I think Beautiful Fighters, although very cheesy, had a very clear and tangible meaning,
i could list all the PVs from then on
but
Just because these are new does not discount them as good PVs, what makes them poorly done?

IMO, poorly done would be a PV like Daybreak
Nothing happened at all in that video and it was prior to B&D

I think a lot of you are looking for hidden meanings and when there isn't any, you discount her music videos as poorly done

However on my part, I do think Sunset was a disappointment. Sunrise was nice but Sunset was too much like it.

in other words, i can understand everyone's sulky mood after this Sunset video, but i dont think it is fair to say all the PVs from B&D onward have been a "spiral downward," now this is just personal tastes, but Sparkle was very nice, the Marionette PV was beautifully done too (I hated the song though), and Mirrorcle World was pretty badass.

truehappiness 8th August 2009 06:42 AM

I feel that people view Ayu's past through Swarovsky-encrusted glasses. You can't SEE ANYTHING.

^This...

There are a lot of old videos from her I find TERRIBLE and people here praise like the best invention since sliced bread...

The ayu videos I find bad are Depend on You, Whatever, To be, boys & girls, Fly High, Surreal, Far way-Vogue-Seasons, M, Dearest, Daybreak, Free & Easy, Voyage, Real Me, Hanabi episode II, No way to say, humming 7/4, Born to be, decision, (don't) leave me alone, Next Level... imo all those are or look cheap, or are boring, or have a very stupid "meaning" or all the 3 things together... and a lot of them are praised around here as "beautiful", "artistic", "deep" or whatever...

I don't wanna sound a pain in the ass, but it's getting annoying to see people bashing a lot of videos I like everytime @_______________________@ And saying like it is a proven fact that they are bad or something

truehappiness 8th August 2009 06:49 AM

I'm not really talking to anyone in particular.

Seriously.

For me, it is the directing and editing that are poorly done. Hidden meanings would be a great bonus IF the director is able to send that message across seamlessly through the video.

Most of the PVs after B&D may have had interesting concepts, but the execution was unorganized and lack the connection, like GREEN, Together When... etc

i agree on those 2

I mean

if the point of Green wasnt about being a homo then I think the PV was really off the wall and weird and had no meaning at all

and Together When, IIRC, didnt it steal some marionette ideas?
or the other way around

either way,
it was disconnected and choppy, i mean the cab driver swearing at the beginning does not fit with ayus cute puppy crying face

so, i see what you mean

this is a thread about everyone's thoughts of Sunset PV... so...?

Aisha_Angel 8th August 2009 07:40 AM

I think what everyone's getting at is the quality of the single PVs. Most of the time Ayu's album exclusive PVs are good with the exception of Bold & Delicious ~another story~ (w/e it was called...) and Curtain Call for me. The storylines no longer make any sense and the costumes/outfits for these PVs just keep getting worse and worse. And while I know this is a little off-topic I'm just gonna say it anyway---a song called GREEN deserves a frickin' GREEN dress, and if the PV is gonna hint at lesbianism Ayu should have french kissed the hell out of Midoring. Well, maybe not french, but they should have done something steamy to make the video memorable. I don't want Ayu to be trashy, but she needed that edge.

If Koda Kumi can practically screw an inanimate object in her dance videos, why can't Ayu kiss a girl and like it? :)
