Nice translation again Misa-chan!

Not really sure about why she calls herself Chon-san, she's been doing that for years I think. As for name-suffixes:

-san: you can use it for anybody. It's the most common form that is attached to a name, and one that is considered the most appropriate and formal.

-chan: normally used for young girls that the speaker is close to. This form is also very endearing, and signifies a close and good relationship between 2 people, so I guess ayu's using it in this sense.

-kun: normally used for young guys that the speaker is close to.

That's about all I know, -chan is definitely not something which is conventionally attached to a guy's name, but yea, ayu's a cute girl, so shu-chan is probably just a cute nickname she gave to shu-ya, means nothing more. Maybe someone from Japan can answer this better. :D

Cute, nerdy Ayu! I wonder if this is gonna start a new trend - KAWAII MEGANE-CHAN. XD

Misa-chan's explanation is perfect; -san is the most normal, and you may use -chan in a private conversation if you're close enough to her (or him). And you can show a sense of affinity when you use -chan. That's why Ayu says Shu-cha (in this post, ayu even omits 'n' of 'chan') and Jackie ojii-chan.

-kun can be used usually for boys when you are close enough to him. Sometimes it is also used for a younger guy in the group you and he belong to.

As for Chon-san, I think it was a nickname given by Zin-san or someone last year. I think we can find out when it was given if we check ayu's past post in TA, but I guess we need to check Zin-san or someone's blog in order to find out why "Chon-san."

Amrai-chan 11th February 2010 11:20 AM

She looks cute. :) I wonder what the tour is going to be like.

LOL Zyoeru, your guess is cute, but inaccurate - I shall explain.

The origin of the nickname Chon-san is, yes, from ZIN's blog. During the making of the "Days" PV, he put up a photo of Ayu on the set (it was very dark though and you couldn't really tell who it was), and ZIN simply called this person "Chon-chan" because they kinda looked like they had a "chonmage" (the japanese word for top-knot) in their hair. Ayu revealed in her blog later that day that "Chon-chan" was her, and the nickname has since evolved into "Chon-san" and "Chon-mama."

The ninja thing is that Ayu used to sign off her posts with "Doron" or some variation of it, like "dorororororo~n". "Doron" means "slipping away unnoticed" or "silently disappearing," but ayu always said it so cutely that I translated the word as "Ninja vanish!" because honestly, that's totally what she'd have said if the entry was in english.

The Ninja/chonchan confusion comes from one particular entry in which ayu said "Dorochon" instead of "Dorororon" or anything, so she worked her "Chonchan" nickname into the "ninja vanish" phrase. For that entry, I had to translate it as "Nin-chon vanish!" and I put an explanation for it at the bottom of the entry.

In another thread, someone once asked about the "Chon-chan" nickname, and the only TA blog translation that one member could find with an explanation was unfortunately THAT one, but I was explaining "Nin-chon vanish," not "Chon-chan" or "chon-san", so that created confusion.

But THIS POST RIGHT HERE is the accurate explanation for both. XD
