I tend to remove only "Beautiful Fighters" from the "Secret" album on my MP3-Player.

So weird that the MSTRKRFT remix amazes me so much, though. The power of remixes.

Oh well, I was expecting you to say Secret XD

It's so underrated >_>

rainbow_smile 15th January 2014 12:00 AM

I only don't like It was, kiss o' kill and Born to be... in Secret :D

It was seems to be not that bad though, need to listen to that one more often

BlackSilence 15th January 2014 12:15 AM

the only thing i skip is the first track i actually really like whole album, every song... Secret is so underated, it's such a lovelly ballad, and i love her slightly hoarse vocals ♥ Alo No More Words is underated as well it's so sweet and calming. I love that one as well.

Oh god no
It's one of my favourite songs on the album lol

Secret is one of my lower-rated Ayu albums. I don't like the flow of that album. But "Not yet," "momentum," "JEWEL," and "BLUE BIRD" are flawless.

I love Secret overall :D And no more words is flawless!

Omg I just realised that even though I always skip Born to be... I somehow remember the whole song :O

Guys, I've been wondering for a long time...what the heck is ayu holding in her right hand??? At the beginning I thought it was a tissue but now I'm not too sure. or I was right? :tipsy:tipsy

I hate born to be... XD Secret is a nice album but really not one of my favourites. I love no more words :D it's so soothing.

Anyway, idk... to me it doesn't look like a tissue, too little and not as soft. But I can't really understand what it is...

TeamAyu2004 15th January 2014 12:34 PM

When I firs heard Secret. I hated it!
Now because of songs like Born to be and the title track and just about everything, its one of the better ones!!!

REally? That's my fave song from the album along with Until that day.....Secret is a good album. Born to be can be really annoying at times and Secret is a ballad that I don't listen very often but still, it's a good ballad. For me, Secret is one of those songs that you like but you don't listen very often to it, only in certain moments.

This thread is so awesome, I love me some reading <3

Except for HOTEL Love songs 2012 being a great show (it really did feel like a theatrical show), going back to Party Queen why do you think ayu combined Love songs and Party Queen for a live? Because Love songs had no self show (because of PoM?) Or it really was a good idea to combine Love songs and Party Queen into something called HOTEL Love songs? even though it also had a CDL). But the HOTEL Love songs tour was especially about Party Queen. Delirium posted that Tell me why is a song ayu sings to herself but she used Shuya like she is singing it for a guy. Also, why do you think ayu finished it with Party Queen and Love songs? (not the encore, the main show).

Btw Party queen, Return Road and Tell me why are personal classics (japanese fans may have how beautiful you are from Party Queen =P)

IMO Party queen is mostly about how Ayu tendence Of avoiding her personal problems and difficult on trusting people led her to be a poor lonely rich girl. She has been singing a about loneliness her whole career, but it was the first time she recognized it's her, and not the cruel evil world, to blame.

I think it was to be expected, since Love Songs and Party Queen are so entwined with each other. They represent respectively the beginning and the end of a story and a dream, with all the resulting thoughts that involves. I suppose she coudn't do a Love Songs themed concert, since the dream she had was broken, but she could picture the results, and that's what HOTEL Love Songs is for me.
On another note, I'm very fascinated with Tell me why and its lyrics too! I feel too Ayu is kind of singing to herself. Tbh, I feel she's always singing to herself on Party Queen, except in call.

ayumisrael 15th January 2014 09:48 PM

But then why was the tour mainly Party Queen and why on Tell me why she used Shuya to sing it to (for a guy) if it's for herself? Not that it bothers me, I really loved the show and I'm a Tell me why fan =) I think HLs 2012 was an awesome tour. I would like to discuss what you guys think was the idea behind it since I think that the live tours must be connected to what ayu wanted to convey in the albums, unless she prefers to connect a fictional or new story just using songs from the albums?

Delirium-Zer0 15th January 2014 10:22 PM

Lyrically "Tell me why" sounds like a sequel to (miss)understood, looking at it from a big picture perspective.

In any case, it seems she's singing to someone with a publicly visible persona with lines like

その声で聴かせて欲しい
画面からじゃ伝わらない

I want you to let me hear, in your voice,
the things that can't be conveyed from a (TV) screen

Plus if you know her history of taking on everything herself professionally, and her reason why (because then if anything went wrong, she'd be the one responsible), alot of the lyrics about taking on too much personal responsibility REALLY seem to apply to her. So my theory is that she's singing to herself, or singing from the point of view of a lover or best friend talking to her.

I could absolutely be wrong though - she quotes the addressee as calling themselves "ore" so she's either talking to a guy, or a very tomboyish/casual type of girl, and ayu DOES typically refer to herself as "atashi" when she's getting especially personal. So she COULD be singing to someone she's friends with or has dated who's also famous, and who she relates to a great deal.

Or hey, could be both. Lyrics & poetry are fun like that. hehe

pommy48 15th January 2014 10:31 PM

I haven't really watched any of her TV lives or concerts lately...but does she still talk with a cute voice?

If not...when did she stop?

I think it was really difficult to make it about Love Songs, since that album was all about love and happiness and it all ended in tragedy, poor her. I guess she used more Party Queen because it was about what she was feeling more at the moment, but she named it HOTEL Love Songs 'cause she used the ideas from the tour Love Songs was going to be and 'cause it was where it all begun anyway.
About Tell me why, I think it's like Delirium-Zer0 said: it's a beatiful song that can have more and different readings (like I feel it often happens with Ayu songs, lol).

Surreal17 15th January 2014 11:03 PM

Don't know if you guys noticed but Tell me why and criminal's lyrics are very similar. The both discuss the same theme of helplessness. Maybe those two songs are somehow connected.

Tell me why - "If you do this, I become powerless wow oh
Can’t I even give you a little bit of support?
Hey, I want to share the burden too
Share your pain, your doubt, your past"

criminal - "Why am I so powerless and stupid?
I can't even protect the hand I surely held"

She goes back to older themes in her lyrics quite frequently, which is what will happen when you write autobiographically AND are as prolific as Ayu is (Stevie Nicks, for example, reuses phrases in her lyrics constantly, always has).

How many times has she mentioned "ano ko" for example, usually in combination with someone else ("kimi/you", "aitsu/that guy", "boku/me")? Off the top of my head, I can think of immature, Heartplace, fairyland, Marionette.

In "Secret" she sings about flying with only one wing - no doubt a reference to "Endless sorrow" and her then-new status as a single woman - and girls who are dazzling, probably a reference to "Boys & Girls." (I really should listen to the song "Secret" more often... I never liked the arrangement, it's a bit R&B for my taste, but the lyrics, MY GOODNESS! I love the lyrics to this song, and her vocals are suitably sad and shaken-sounding.)

She says in the 2000 NTV interview that she became a singer in her search for an "ibasho," a place in the world for her, a place where she belonged. That phrase comes up in her lyrics frequently - "A Song for XX," "Naturally," "BLUE BIRD" (which may or may not be referring to "ibasho" in the spiritual sense like it usually does, but it's FASCINATING if it does!), "Secret." In "NEXT LEVEL" doesn't use the phrase directly but she clearly seems to be talking about having found her "ibasho" there (which is made more explicit by the time-traveling photo album montage during "Bridge to the Sky" at AT2009, leading into "NEXT LEVEL." I may or may not have cried actually) and now wondering where to go next with the freedom that achievement has brought.

Anyway, I like looking at ayu's lyrics. haha :)

mizuki-7 15th January 2014 11:55 PM

I really like your interpretation of her lyrics =D

I was agreeing with you! XD
The mid-section of the album deals with the marriage and both Return Road And Tell me why are about and for Mannie... The first dealing with it on the public sphere And the 2nd on the private sphere.

Party Queen is a concept album, and those usually either explore a concept and aethetic or tell a story. Party Queen tells a story, starting from the parting night of the protagonist, then going to what she is trying to forget during the rock-section, the conclusion of what happened during the jazz part and the closing\self rendeption during HBYA

I remember that some reviews said party queen was not cohesive
But I thought that the interludes did a great job of setting the tones for the following songs.
I guess some people just don't see that

I thought the entire thing was really forced. Like I had never really noticed the interludes "setting" the stage for the next group of songs, but with this album its like BAM in your face.

Given that I don't really care about this interlude, I've always thought that they way it sounds + its title point to an "alice in wonderland" landscape which would introduce the sound which comes after it and the way themes are going to be treated from now on. Both in ESM and the next love the voice who's talking seems that of an alicesque ayu. In ESM she's supposedly a little girl who doesn't really understand what's going on around her and the few things she CAN understand get obliviated in a wonderland-like way: eyes, smoke and then magic. She doesn't want to see it probably and instead refuges in a world of magic, fantasy. Everything is sublimated in some way. in The next love we have again the figure of a little ayu (she again talks about mama, how she used to tell her that she'd find a prince and so on.) who, looking herself in her mother's mirror (looking-glass anyone?) thought she could become "anything she wanted to" (again an escape into a wonderland through the "looking-glass"). In here though ayu takes the distance from that little girl and does the point of the situation. She's not little anymore, she has to deal with her own problems... (thus the series of question. When Did I last believe in something I couldn't see? When did I start hating myself? Am I an adult now?") The wonderland is shattered, she's a grown up, lonely, sad woman ("where is it possible to find love? what's its form? Where did you (written with the kanji for female, so she's referring to women) buy it?) no longer believing in the illusion of the charming prince who would have woken her up from her sleep, according to mama's words, she feels the depression of the reality. That's what I think :)

Well, and alot of the mixing and studio work is not good. That's just the truth.

1) The processing on Timmy's bg vocals is not great about half the time you hear him, and they very nearly ruin Return Road. They didn't multi-track him enough or add enough reverb or something. In BRILLANTE he sounded epic & operatic but in Return Road he sounds synthesized and cheesy.

2) The sound effects in ESM are distracting. I understand the thought behind them - in moderation they could have added to the song in a clever way, but they were overdone and mixed too loud. They sound cartoony, and not in an effective way.

HOWEVER. If you look at the lyrics - I mean REALLY look at them - she's talking about alcoholism, post-traumatic stress, loneliness, the meaninglessness of the more outwardly fun aspects of her life. It's a great examination of the shallow versus the deep, and the fact that even though Ayu has come to terms with her past self, there is still a sharp division between the product Hamasaki Ayumi and the person Ayu, and she's not sure "Hamasaki Ayumi" isn't winning - the shallow Hamasaki Ayumi persona is getting bigger, and she's not sure where the product ends and the real person "ayu" begins. You can hear this in songs like "Letter" and "Tell me why" where it sounds like she's singing to herself.

And most of the arrangement choices on the album have a point - NaNaNa is a clear tribute to Keiko after Ayu almost lost her to that hemorrhage, for example. More honest songs have more real, non-synth instruments (call, Letter, reminds me); songs that are more sarcastic & whose lyrics deliberately hide pain have more shiny & colorful arrangements (Party Queen, Shake It <3); the songs that are saddest are more often in a minor key (reminds me, Tell me why).

And then there's the very end of the "how beautiful you are" PV, which is part of the whole thing. She seems like this angel who's guiding everyone, but at the end she's fighting against the same wind they are.

Aside from that video, most of the visual parts of the "Party Queen" product don't really work that well. The original SUPER AYU shoot being used for the booklet was a better choice thematically than the original shots - which ended up in the final SUPER AYU book - but because they weren't taken SPECIFICALLY for the album, they don't QUITE do the job. Ayu chose the photos to depict the messy, lonely, empty room after a party the night before - lamps are turned over, there's booze on the table with breakfast. She was hoping to show a self-destructive pattern in that booklet but the photos were taken with a more sexy, fun, kinda trashy attitude in mind, not a tragic one. So her facial expressions don't contribute to the real theme of the album. The PVs are the same way - we only see fun, from the outside. The tragic consequences aren't emphasized enough, if they're shown at all.

So musically, for the most part, yeah I think the album is great. I just think the visuals made it hard to understand what she was doing.

I really like your analysis of the album, a very accurate observation and an interesting read. Thank you :)

makes me wish masa would continue writing essays, although I read there is no desire to expand on the existing ones, there would be so much material to recap on now.

I looooove a cup of tea *_______*

like tsumekaze said, it reminds me a lot of Alice in wonderland and the whole thing sounds this is what i imagine an acid trip gone bad to sound like XD. sounds very unsettling in the best kind of way and that's why I think this interlude has a strong underlying message (also in connection with the themes of the album)

also, very refreshing to have this kind of music on an ayu album <3

p.s.: quite disappointed with the video they did for "a cup of tea" for the tour...
it had potential for a seriously trippy video, but they just . didn't . do . It . :(

I remember a lot of people saying that Party Queen doesn't have a concept. People just said ayu saw someone asking if she is a lonely queen and ayu jumped on the idea but I never listen to shades anyway. I love me Party Queen, the song itself is one of ayu's bests. Return Road alone slays discographies.

About Secret's opening - Not Yet-until that Day...-Startin'-1 LOVE-It was

One of the best openings ever. It's getting calmer with It was but it's a great song.

Ayu-me 17th January 2014 01:28 PM

I had a dream about Ayu last night. For some reason, Ayu was in Stockholm to do a performance before she went to the BUDDHA2 premiere at the Louvre, though instead of performing "Pray" she performed "beloved"(!? Hopefully there's nothing prophetic about this...). She was wearing a big, midnight blue dress and an ornate silver tiara, and people were talking about "The Swan Lake" for some reason, I don't know what Tchaikovsky's ballet had to do with her, my mind seemed to think the movie was inspired by it or something.
After the performance, she was driven away in a jeep and I, along with other fans, got to follow her in a bus (I remember thinking that my mom would miss me on her shopping trip today but I didn't care, because Ayu, you know) and eventually we got to the airport, where Ayu would board a plane to Paris. I walked up to Ayu with a piece of paper for her to sign (and I was mentally berating myself for not carrying any Ayu CDs or merchandise), and after she signed it, I sat down and started crying of joy. When I woke up, my eyes were wet and I was disappointed to realize that it had all been a dream. :( I've had Ayu dreams before, but this is the first one that I could remember so clearly and it had felt so vivid.
Well, back to reality, the only song from the Ftl/M-g-r single that I've been listening to regularly is "Feel the love (Blasterjaxx remix)", the HK remix doesn't impress me at all and the original mixes aren't good enough to hold my interest for long. My dream made me aware of just how underwhelming the newest single felt, and how wistful I am for new material from Ayu. The BUDDHA2 premiere is less than 2 weeks away, I feel like Ayu should be announcing a new single with "Pray" soon, or at least an album (I don't care which).

marty 17th January 2014 04:46 PM

I really can't like "a cup of tea". I tried. Seriously.
Instead, I'm crazy about "taskebab", it's so amazing, I love that interlude. (And the name, come on, that's GENIUS)
And, I remember a lot of people praising LOVEagain interludes, but I didn't find them so impressive. Nice, I suppose, but they weren't that good.

tokyoxjapanxfan 17th January 2014 05:27 PM

Even though we only have one single for this era... I can't help but think this is era will be similar to (miss)understood.

Maybe it's because she's reached out of her comfort zone, maybe it's the foreign sound, maybe it's her attitude, maybe it's her imagery... that's all I keep thinking about lately haha.

I mean we even have a (likely to be) lead song coming out called PRAY. (miss)understood had HEAVEN. Grasping at straws? Maybe. But I obviously don't have much going on right now lol.

Feel the love? fun let loose song. Completely divided her fan base (at least on here). Bold & Delicious? Fun let loose song that also divided her fan base.

The cover of Feel the love / Merry-go-round also gave me B&D vibes the first time I saw it. Both songs also shot in a big city in the US. Albeit different coasts.

The inclusion of the heart-like frame effect in the Feel the love video also gave me allusions to m(u).

Interesting thoughts...it may be similar as you say...I really hope that she tries something new and bold with this album! Pray!

tsumekaze_ 17th January 2014 06:02 PM

I like your vision of things. But I swear that if she delivers another m(u)-like cover...just no. I'm curious for the new album. I guess that if she does come out with another single, that single will be what determines the direction the album will go in. I'm actually thinking that after experimenting with nanana, shake it, ftl, mgr, she will try to go in this direction and pull a namielike "FEEL". (which I absolutely didn't like btw çç). So she could announce pray single (for the ballad section of the album) and then another EDM single. Then the album. This would be very interesting...am I dreaming too much?

Omg! No EDM album ayu, please!!! It would be terrible for me.................can't she release a jazz album (like IU did..:)) or a traditional only album? Or I don't know, something different!!!!!!!! I love ayu's experiments with EDM but I don't want a full album :dead2

tsumekaze_ 17th January 2014 07:57 PM

HAHA I can see her releasing a jazz album!!! Now, you know what I'd love? A COVER ALBUM. pretty much everyone does it, but she never has. As she covered many songs over the years it would be nice to hear some of them. (to be clearer: HARU YO KOI STUDIO VERSION)
Btw though I really loved love again/love songs, as long as she doesn't release another pinkysofty ballad album I'll be happy. I'm fed up with those, I want something à la next level!!!

Finally someone opened about ayu releasing a jazz album!
Hmm..haven't thought about this lately, it would be nice but if I'll have to choose between a studio album and a cover one I'll certainly choose the studio one. I'll rather want a tribute album for ayu (like Yui did)

I'm starting to like all these songs I had no interest in before. I've grown to like CAROLS, INSPIRE, and appears as of recent.

I kinda hope she doesn't. I'd like her to take a year to chase other opportunities to expose and challenge herself to a wider audience.

Im not into Ayu right now, every time I try to watch her concert,I feel like its kinda old school with the same pattern/style concert

so Im listening to others, and searching for the good anthem, somehow I still listen to MGR, I know deep in me Im waiting patiently for something new from Ayu,something different,

God, I just heard the original Voyage with great earphones and I NEVER heard the back ground "we are on a journey looking for love" thing in the chorus! I thought it was something new for AT 2013 15th Anniversary!! I mean I heard Background singing but I never realized it was that. XDD

rainbow_smile 21st January 2014 01:11 AM

I always knew that was originally from Voyage haha

There was one time when I kind of stalked the thread, where everyone speculated what was sung in her songs' English lines, because they're often not included in the lyrics xD

TeamAyu2004 21st January 2014 03:58 AM

I want news for some new music!!
Come on ayumi!!

tsumekaze_ 21st January 2014 10:12 AM

Yeah I've noticed about the background singing only after someone pointed it out here on AHS when the A best came out! I guess I'm not too sharp when it comes to music. XD

btw I think we shall take a minute to remember what holy goodness is "criminal".
Tho, the girl always sings about wether she'll be forgiven or not. (I am..., criminal, ivy just to quote a few). Da hell has she done?

She probably just feels like she's done something wrong, hurt her loved ones, that's why she's lonely. But she's not sure what went wrong. I don't know if I'm making any sense, but that's the case for me xDD

waterballoon 22nd January 2014 05:23 PM

ugh I hate the HOTEL Love Songs concert so much..

I just rewatched some segments and.... I liked Shake It <3 & NaNaNa, as well as the beginning. Of course One Night Carnival too.

But everything else made me :rolleyes

- appears/Missing: disgusting stage set up (also why I couldn't stand CDL 11-12).. the beds and the one Maro with many women, yep, it reminded me of a place. also the way he was feeling her up throughout the performance... can she get anymore unprofessional? her vocals were really shaky during "appears" too, and that's one of my favorite songs from her. the AT 07 performance was flawless; I dunno I'd rather she repeat that than ... this mess.

- Party Queen: needless to say, I never liked the "I am a lonely queen" part. desperate cry for attention imho and I just didn't like it. perhaps the only thing that saved it was the better mix of the song live and the lights

- reminds me/Tell me why: for such personal songs it's beyond me why she needed so many dancers. I also couldn't stand the stage set up here. the doors and all that, bleh.. cheap is the word.

- kiss o' kill: obviously a "filler" song.. compared to the AT 07 one this was a lackluster performance.. couldn't feel any emotions or anything from it, so it's like she chose this randomly to replace Return Road. then again I'd rather have the empty kiss o' kill than the over dramatic and unprofessional Return Road.

I think 2012 was 1 of her worst years. the arena tour that year was really disappointing (moreso than the 2009 one I'd think)... meh..

I'm expecting flames and harsh comments on what I just said but it's what I feel. the Party queen era was a mess & I'm glad she's over it. and I sincerely hope she doesn't churn out garbage tours like HOTEL Love Songs anymore

tsumekaze_ 22nd January 2014 05:46 PM

^ I agree with many things there, really, even though I liked the concert. I would have prefered reminds me and tell me why on the stage alone and was quite disappointed at the number of dancers and I didn't like the stage, it seemed cheap because it also trembled when they danced and I was afraid that it came all down LOL XD didn't mind the missing/appears one but it's not one I rewatch, as the similar one in cdl 11/12, it just didn't click for me. I loved the party queen performance... And the kiss o' kill one was just boring, even though the song is one of my favourites. I skipped it. Definetely a filler XD in general: I liked the concert BUT compared to at10 rock'n roll circus and at11 power of music it felt like it couldn't compare, to my taste. Still many performances were perfect, like shake it, nanana, sparkle, esm, one night carnival... Absolutely hated the interlude when maro dances tiptap. Bleh. Anyway I don't think anyone should be harsh to you, you just expressed your opinion! It's an interesting topic :)

thank you! yeah interesting AT 12 had one of my favorite performances ever too - Shake It <3 I loved that one, it was really sexy and cool!

But it seems like this year's arena tour would be something interesting and different, so I can't wait ^_^

ayu-michan 23rd January 2014 05:15 AM

AT12 only had one impact on me and that was "flashy". It's like seeing glitter and diamonds and those light! I personally thought it was very enjoyable, but definitely not something that I would re-watch, or I'll just watch it only when I want something entertaining. Unlike AT10, there weren't that much of memorable performances, but overall I don't have much hatred toward it.

On another note, I found this page from Popteen 2013.11 issue, I was surprised to see 2001 Ayu pics in the bottom, does anyone know what it said!

You got it too?

I'm assuming it's something to do with the 15th anni, sending feedback to Ayu :D

I clicked the link and it's got a questionnaire.....

Question 1 is for your member no, and question 2 is your "pen-name".

Question 3 and 4 have a bit of kanji which I'm not good at reading. My best guess is that Q3 is asking about your lifestyle and you have 500 characters/letters to reply. Q4 is something along the lines of 15 years of music but I can't really read the whole thing :(

Does anyone know if TA emails you when your membership is up? Mine is due March 31 and my Perfume PTA membership emailed me today to renew (which I did via CreditCard). Will TA just have the link there? I'm just worried I'll lose my spot and have to reapply ;__;

tsumekaze_ 23rd January 2014 10:15 AM

So the email says that because of the release of the photobook today "ayu life style" members of TA can ask some questions to ayu and she might end up answering them, about her lifestyle or her music in this 15 years. They're waiting for your questions!

The page of journal is about this mizukitty's life who is apparently a fan of ayu since a long time. The photos from 2001 are from her middle school when she made a scrapbook writing that she always listened to ayu in the past and always will be listening to her. "I can't like anyone but ayu" :)

rainbow_smile 23rd January 2014 03:55 PM

Yeah, thanks to google translate I kinda got that it was about sending her questions and staff xD I think it also said that some of the replies will be published in TA magazine or something?

But did I understand correctly that they only accept questions in full-width characters, which probably means Japanese-only?
