I guess as I see the whole concert as her production and as her vision, I don't care when I can't see her (what I do for 90% of the performance) because in the end of the day what is happening on stage still is the realization of her vision and of her art.

Still, I can get why people dislike that concert, I only find it interesting that even if tons of pop musicians (and even indie and "artisier" ones) try bending theater and music concert, most of the time the result is pretty superficial, while HLS is basically filled if great theater moments.

I kind of like a blend of concert and show, but I'd love to only have Ayu by herself onstage for half of a concert.

After six years of totally loving this album more than any other, I FINALLY got Love Songs. I don't know why I waited so long but oh well. When NEXT LEVEL came out, I listened to it none stop and to me, it was the best thing ever. Love Songs, though, really was powerful when it came out and I still think it is one of her best albums EVER.

Her voice is very nice in tracks such as crossroad and MOON.

I can't rant on enough about this damn album....UGH it is making me so happy. Maybe my winter depression will go away now that I have this. <3

I like how Thank U is kind of like a really long interlude, IMO. I never liked that song much before but it is actually kind of cool. A lot of the songs have great melodies and awesome background music. Sweet Season has an awesome melody, too. It's so relaxing and her voice is really pretty. I never noticed just how pretty her voice was on that song.

Though I super duper complained about PoM when I first heard the concept (I was bitter about having no Love songs tour more than anything) it's become one of my favorites.

I listen to the forgiveness live recording quite often and it was a very rare opportunity to see such a tour.

I'm surprised that I actually remember blossom, since it's a total album track to me.
Love Songs is great as a whole. The standouts for me are:
*Love Song - reminds me of Rainbow Ayu for some reason. The guitar is perfect.
*Crossroad - My personal favorite of the albums/singles. Love the lyrics.
*Moon
*sending mail
*virgin road

That's basically it. The album has its own identity and I enjoy that, even if I may not listen to it often. I'm more of a Rock N' Roll Circus fan anyway.

No not blossom lol. No more blossoms. That is one of the few songs in ayu's disco that I just can't get into. Good song. Just really hard to listen to for some reason. The rest of Love Songs is godly though

I LOVE the part in sending mail where she raises her voice. It's in the pre-chorus. Idk how to describe it but the melody and the way she executed it was spot-on.

I don't listen to blossom anymore, but instead I listen to the Clockwork Yellow Remix. It's soooo good it makes me forget about the original !

I'm basically the pickiest and most critical person when it comes to music, so when I have come to like tracks that others find loathsome, it's strange. Sweet Season and blossom are two examples of that.

Sweet Season, although at first I hated it, have come to thoroughly enjoy it. I think if you find the right context to listen to it within, then you will come to accept it as it is, and find it perfect for said context. In the case of this song, it's very mellow, soothing, relaxing, reflective, and easy-going. It's certainly not "showy" at all, which is what I think so many people hate about it. But I find it's perfect for at the end of an early-autumn day, when the sky's hue is a mixture of burnt oranges, faint yellows, and tinted pinks. When the sun is beginning it's descent, and it's rays are being reflected off the gently shimmering leaves of beautiful but dying foliage. When you're driving in the car, maybe returning from a days trip, and it's just you, the road, and the journey back. Play this track, during this time of day, and maybe you will learn to appreciate it's hidden beauty.

blossom is a song I have loved since the beginning, and never understood how anyone could dislike it. It's the summer ayu track that broke the monotony of fairyland, BLUE BIRD, glitter-type tracks. It went for a more organic, crisp feeling (rather it's a spring-time or cool summer's day track vs the former which are better for hot days). Actually, a better way to describe it in contrast with tracks like fairyland, BLUE BIRD, glitter, and even Sunrise (which evoke celebratory feelings), is that it's very comforting. The gentle sadness that it alludes to is now being comforted in present day. I got this even prior to looking at the lyrics. Additionally, I love it's use of guitars and it's piano base. The bridge is the perfect length, and the gentle refrain that follows is perfectly contrasted with the way the guitar reintroduces the energy. Furthermore, I love Ayu's unexpected increase in pitch for a single note after that point, introducing an optimistic and hopeful feeling as she looks toward the future. I don't understand what's not to like about all of that, so if you can enlighten me, be my guest... But I find that it perfectly encapsulates and conveys a very specific type of feeling and emotion, and that's what I look for in a great track.

Amen to all of the above. I think Sweet Season and Blossom are both great songs, so subtle and not showy. They sound sincerely happy without too much sparkly or anything. And her voice is awesome in these two songs. To me, she didn't push too hard for something she couldn't do, but did what she could and did it really well.

I am so impressed with this album. Like...November is UHmazing. The style is so out there compared to most music I listen to, but there's actually something so complex about it. <3 It's awesome.

My personal favorites from the album are Sending Mail, Crossroad, Like a Doll, do it again, November, and Virgin Road but I love EVERY song on the album to a different degree. It's a very inspiring and unique album that I think has outshined all of her albums of recent years.

Yeeeees! The intensity of the guitar and her singing just creates this feeling of anxiety but it's so good!

Sweet Season may be good for some under "the right context" but it's such a chore to me. I don't think that people hate it because it's slow since the forums seem to love the hell out of Sweet Scar and Shape of Love, and other more understated ballads. It just doesn't resonate with people and that's fine. Ayu DOES have hundreds of songs by this point, it's bound to happen. Hell, it happens to some of my favorite songs (like beloved. I don't get the hate for it).

As for blossom, NEXT LEVEL did it better :P
Fairyland/Blue Bird/glitter aren't even super similar, though? Never understood the comparison, ESPECIALLY for Fairyland? That's such a unique song. The interlude in the middle of the song is everything, so emotional.

I think this has been discussed a lot and I may sound like a broken radio but Ayu could possibly get higher sales again with more TV appearances.

Has anyone realized how she always receive good feedbacks whenever she appears on TV even for non fans and her older songs charts back almost around the same time as each performances.

I completely forgot about blossom and Sweet Season. I got bored with them, but listening again, blossom is a good song even if it's generic. It's a generic ayu sound I'm into :P

Every time I decide to check out this thread we're always talking about a song that I have a hate/love relationship with. Blossom is one of those. Every time it comes on, I go: 'Ah, this is nice.' And I know the lyrics. I know the melody. I can sing along without problem.

Never liked Love songs, but it's not my least favourite album (and I can't believe it came out in 2010! Where does time go?). For a long time the only song I liked off it was Love Song but recently I got into Virgin Road.

Love songs has so many great melodies and really fantastic lyrics (except Like a doll which is a rehash of Marionette, but the way she plays with the sound a bit more here is pretty cool)... but god I just want to hear someone remix/reproduce THE ENTIRE THING except for "Love song." That's seriously the only song that sounds like it's finished. x_x That song was like a false freaking promise lol.... it wrote a check the rest of the album just could not cash.

Except "insomnia." Truth, that's my 2nd favorite song on that album.

I thought the early video mix of "Sweet season" was MUCH better, where you can actually hear the banjo (I think it's banjo?) playing. I probably wouldn't hate the song so much if THAT was the mix we got XD

I'm sorry to inject a complete change in direction, but it's just struck me over these last few days that I think Ayu ruined how beautiful you are with the lyrics. There's something highly memorable for me about the instrumental version, which I think fits very well among Ayu's other ballads, but the lyrics and singing are the parts that ruin it for me.

Anyway, I've fallen in love with the instrumental cut of the song, which I think was done quite well in contrast to the track with vocals.

I've always thought that "Like a doll" was a mixture of And Then and Dolls (the structure is similar to Dolls, but with that "And Then" vibe). ^^;

Anyone remember Sunset ~Love is all~ ? I remember there was so much hate for it when it first came out for being boring. Has anyone's opinion changed on it? I still think it drags a bit but is a nice listen.

I was firmly in the Sunrise camp when the single came out and never paid much attention to Sunset, but then I went to go see AT2009 and my life was unfolding in such a way at the time that being at Yoyogi and seeing the performance and really listening to the lyrics for the first time was like...the emotional equivalent of being hit by a freight train. I remember sitting there sobbing, trying not to disturb the people around me, lol. I've had a soft spot for it ever since.

It definitely drags on but my opinion has changed somewhat of it. When the single was first released, it was Sunrise that I was so drawn to. It's just fun and bouncy and a great work-out song (for me). Sunset was just... boring. And I still find it boring but I'm not entirely against it now. I even sang it for a friend's wedding reception because the bride (another Ayu fan) asked me to. I think it was that moment there that made me change my mind about the song. Like you said, it drags but it's a nice listen. Not one I ever find myself going 'Huh, I feel like listening to Sunset.' But I don't skip it when it comes on.

She's released A LOT worse since Sunset. So whenever it comes on now, I actually find it quite soothing by comparison.

I loved Sunset when it came out. In fact, my only gripe with it was that it had all the trappings of a classic Ayu ballad but didn't come together production-wise. Today, I mostly miss the feeling of expecting a new single. So, because Sunrise/Sunset was Ayu's last summer-themed single, I respect and appreciate it much more now than I did then. I just wish that it wasn't the last.

There are many things I can handle Ayu not doing, but the hardest among them all has been her cutting down the singles. The day Ayu comes back and says, "Hey! I'm going to release singles regularly again," will be the day I think a lot of us breathe a collective sigh of relief.

I preferred the more poppy sounding preview from the kiwi commercial. The final product was a bit too acousticy for me?

Also I just cant sit through her concerts anymore. Her voice is so good but there are waaay too many things going on stage. Like when she sang Duty on her last DVD....how can I watch and enjoy her singing about the end of her world when there are clowns doing backflips and juggling things?

For the most part I prefer Ayu being alone on stage with her band... Concert Tour 2000 appeals so much to me as there were many moments when the stage seemed empty or at least not crowded by Japanese dancers.

I also prefer the TV lives, when she used to do her thing without heaps of random dancers around her. Last time I got angry for this reason was the "A Song is born" live performance at Music Station. I would have loved to enjoy it but there were so many distracting people surrounding Ayu, trying to look emotional.

Ayu + Tetsuya & her band would have been the perfect constellation for me. Or just Ayu and Tetsuya in a piano duet...

I think she feels like she needs to fill the stage for the concert to be enjoyable, but she doesn't. There has to be a balance between the number of people on stage and the song. My Story tour and premium countdown live are good examples of that I think.

I would LOVE a stripped down Ayu and Tetsuya show. They have enough songs together that it would easily work.

Yeah, Ayu's concerts are like... Whenever I have to design a website or an ad, and the client says to "emphasize this... oh, and can we make this pop a little more? ... I wanna draw more attention to this, too..." and by the time he's done telling me to make EVERYTHING pop, NOTHING actually draws your eye at all, it's just a big old mess. There's no focal point, there's no flow that draws your eyes from one thing to another, it looks like a child's messy playroom.

That is what Ayu's concerts are like for me a lot of times. lol

Yeah, an early edit of the video was posted on Vimeo by one of the kids' parents, and the mix of the song is VERY different. The guitar & banjo have more emphasis, and a bunch of the studio-synth isn't included or has been greatly reduced. The drums are more complex & less polished, as well. The whole thing just feels a bit more... singular, I guess. It's more nuanced.

You get the feeling like Ayu recorded her vocals on top of the original first-run instrumentation (maybe it's on top of the original demo's instruments), and then mixing afterwards just stripped it of EVERYTHING even remotely uneven, thus stripping it of all its character. I mean this version of the song feels like... Ayu's first foray into Country Music lol. It's actually pretty unique to me! It's not an AMAZING song, but holy crap, everything good about it was, for me, just GONE by the time it got released.

When you watch her concerts now you wouldn't ever think this is someone whos been around for over 15 years. But then its the same thing with many albums, album covers and PVs. The attention to detail and drive to deliver a product worthy of putting the Ayu stamp on it is gone. What we are left with now is generally mediocre and sometimes (often) cringe worthy.

Sometimes I think I need to stop listening to her and quit the fandom all together but I just can't quit on something that I've invested so much money, time and emotion into. Thankfully she still puts out a few gems every now and then and it's not a total and utter loss.

I just can't walk away entirely. When's the last time she put out something I truly enjoyed? A decade ago? Maybe longer? But her back catalogue is so incredible and so important. And because she puts out some really good songs every once and a while, it's worth sticking around for me. She'll always be my favourite even though I feel like I mostly just bitch anymore lol

Kinda with you guys there. Like I love "A ONE" but it's still nowhere near what I feel like it COULD be.

I don't feel like Ayu is doing what she seemed to be on track to do through... hmm, maybe the "H" single. She seemed to be getting more intimate, allowing herself some rawness, she used a good mix of electronic, electric, and acoustic instrumentation.... her stuff had texture, and that gave it more resonance, because the music felt very deliberately created but it also felt very human.

These days I'll listen to music like old-school Garbage, Enter Shikari, late 90s/early 2000s BT, some progressive metal & dramatic Visual Kei stuff, Bjork's "Post" and "Homogenic" albums, Tori Amos' "from the choirgirl hotel" and "To Venus and Back" and I just think.... Ayu should be doing music somewhere at the midway between all that & her current stuff. THAT is where she seemed to be going, and I dunno if she got scared of going that way or what. And I think I'm disappointed that I never got to see a mature version of the material on "Duty" and "I am..." because NONE of the above music really scratches the itch for me. Enter Shikari has all the screaming vocals which I'm really not into. BT's stuff is just a BIT too engineered for Ayu (although I'd still ADORE a collaboration between them, I really would). Prog metal (and math rock) don't typically have the female vocals and when they do the singer just doesn't sound like she's really feeling what she's singing... like she's more focused on the technique than the emotion. The other stuff up there I've just listened to too many times, and there's nothing new that sounds like it, so I'm left kinda feeling like "okay, I'm done listening to all that, does anyone have anything for me? ...No? well crap..."

Ayu's big selling point for me was that her stuff was more personal & complex than most "pop" was, but it still had the polish & professionalism of pop... It was intimate like the rock I enjoyed, but it wasn't totally self-indulgent and thrown-together-in-a-garage sounding. My taste has always been stuff that's personal and noisy, but communicated in the polished pop music language. And Ayu exemplified that in a MAJOR way for awhile. And I've yet to find anyone to match it. Like I've never heard a song like "monochrome" by anyone else.

When Ayu occasionally releases songs that incorporate some deliberate artistry, it's SO WORTH IT to keep following her, because those songs are always "OMG MY FAVORITE SONG EVER" whenever they happen.

I remember watching this when it was first posted but I never noticed the difference between this and the final version. Personally I like both, but this version sounds rawer, warmer somehow.

Something like Oukoku kingdom come, Romance or Keijijou Ryusei. Although I think even Ayu would find it challenging to match Sakurai's sexy soulful style.

Also as a Bjork and Tori Amos fan I can say that looking at their careers, they too (to me) had highs and low in terms of their musical output but I dont think any of them actually lost sense of their selves or their art like I feel Ayu did. I feel that Ayu is too immersed in her world to be able to look at anything objectively. She needs to either step away for a time or hire an objective third party to critique her work.

No, BT the electronic composer/producer... although a collab with Buck-Tick might be interesting, especially if Ayu sticks to her lower voice and gentle vibrato. She can be absolutely entrancing when she sings low like that. Imagine a Buck-Tick collaboration version of "the next LOVE"! They could add a really gorgeous gothic touch to something like that.

But no, BT (Brian Transeau)'s older big beat stuff (cuz nowadays his stuff is more straightforward EDM/pop/trance) is a GREAT fit for Ayu. To be honest even his recent EDM stuff is a better fit for Ayu melodically & production-wise than a bunch of what was on "Colours," but only marginally. I just feel like the feelings they both put into music seem very similar, but he's much more willing to express it than Ayu has been.

I just have such a hard time believing Ayu hasn't looked into working with BT at all o_O I mean, Hybrid and Mad Professor back in the day, but not BT? That's weird to me.

Between 50% and 80% of songs from the album is actually her average... It's unusual for her to perform the whole album (I can only think of AT09) or 2 or 3 songs from it (happened with both GUILTY and LOVE again, 2 failures released on years of best of tours and Love Song, the tour being scraped because of the disaster)

She is just not naming the tours after the albums, but it doesn't mean they aren't linked on theme or aesthetic, as Colours and PSC were both about her trying a different aproach and.A One and CdM being both about her doing classic Ayu.

I think that is ok. (So she performed 8 out of 11 songs at CDL + Tour)
You must think of that the CdM Tour was her longest concert. Even is she whould have sung all of the A One Songs it still whould have been less than a half of the concert.

There are a lot of songs on A song for xx that I love. Yes, the sound is very retro and 90s and Ayu's voice is nasally imperfect but the melodies and lyrics are :luv2 Hana and SIGNAL, oh and As if... I loved when they were performed for PCDL (which was so long ago now!) I don't think I'd want them re-recorded as their charm comes from lots of the imperfections but some lives performances would maybe be nice.

A ONE has many ballads and mid-tempo songs, singing them all would probably drag the concert and make it less exciting, so I think it's natural she had to select just part of them to be performed. It's different than NEXT LEVEL, for example, that is mostly an upbeat album and she sang all songs during the concert.

Well, the way she's going with the new album's lyrics, I'm not so sure anymore it's going to come out before the tour starts. It may end up with a release schedule like Colours.

SIGNAL is one of my favorites from A song for xx, apart from A song for xx itself and Trust. I really want her to perform Trust again, this song is so good. And so underrrated :(

Actually, I don't really care about the Secret Live concert because her voice was probably as scratchy as in the studio recording. Now, a 2016 stripped down version of As if.. or any other ASFxx song would be interesting.

Also I'm over her dark hair. I think dark hair ages people sometimes. I think she needs a warmer color, and green ash is certainly not warm lol. I always thought she looked great with blonde hair. And I've enjoyed the dark hair. But it's time. Haha.

I feel like she just got the brown hair! A caramel color would be nice. I think she just recently changed it to that? Or maybe she can go a bit lighter yet but keep the brown. It was really dark for a while which I didn't like.

I like that her dark hair makes her look mature and not like she's trying to look younger.

If I had to choose my favorite blonde hair of hers, though, I'd have to choose the color she had in Sweet Scar. So pretty, especially with her modest make up and clothes. :D
