I agree the quality of the pvs from b&d and on fell...with only a few that I think are excellent imo...1 love, jewel, momentum, and marionette...the only 4 that I truly love everything about it.

Because in general (and I think this is mostly agreed upon), most of the PVs since then are just not as good quality wise as her PVs prior to 2006 with very few exceptions. It doesn't even necessarily have to do with plot or deeper meanings (although that would be nice too), but basic filming. Sunrise and Sunset may be boring, but they were at least shot well - many of her pvs have not been shot well the last couple of years.

But at least with Andrenekoi, it is a major difference of opinion. Because I can't imagine anyone classifying Whatever, M, and Free and Easy among others as bad PVs.

I don't think that's how things are for people who like her present material.. Why can't someone just be happy with what's being released now? I think it's more offensive to Ayu to be so absorbed with her past works than to live in the now. I feel as though the best Ayu is Ayu now because she's loving the work that she's doing most at this moment. Why dwell on the fact that X was better than Y when X came out years ago when she was different? This is Ayu now, and we have to live with her now. Not saying that she's gone down in quality (visually, maybe.. musically.. not really.), but it seems like some people continue to have this sort of weird ~wow 1998-2003 was AMAZING. 2004-2009 can go suck a lemon!~ mentality that just baffles me. Had she released any of these tracks before, I feel like they'd have been just as big. Too much pedestal-placing on the Ayu-that-was and too much negating of the Ayu-that-is..

But hey, we all have different viewpoints.

Andrenekoi 8th August 2009 08:48 AM

IMO the only really BAD video Ayu has is Born to be... because of the eye-killing lights... The other ones may not be loved by everyone, but I can't see any technical problem about them...

and I think it's stupid to overrate ayu's past or present... people can like some period more than other, cuz she changed a lot those years, or even dislike her earlier works or her recent works, but she has done good things and bad things all the way... not everything was perfect, not everything was crap... My 2 favorite ayu songs are endless sorrow and Mirrorcle World for example and two of my most hated are It was... and Fly High...

What is annoying is to say that she is better now or that she went downhill as it was a fact, and not a preference...

truehappiness 8th August 2009 08:52 AM

I just like everything, just.. I think the present Ayu is something I listen to / watch more because I hear / saw / whatever so much of the 1998-2002 Ayu that I don't really need to listen to it anymore, haha.

ComatoseBunnySnatcher 8th August 2009 08:59 AM

^ then respect other's opinions too.

you're forcing YOUR opinion on us.

We DO have the right to complain. WE make her who she is, and without fans, she's nobody. THAT'S exactly why we can't just "like it" and move on:
We have expectations.

But hey, we all have different viewpoints.

It's interesting, a while ago I watched an interview with Marilyn Manson where he talked about fans having to evolve with the artist as they evolve.

But you know what, some people don't want or need to evolve. Some people are perfectly happy where they are, and in that case, for those who only love the old Ayu, maybe they need to move on. I know I've thought about it quite a lot.

Personally, I really miss a lot of the things I used to feel in her music, like for example, originality, innovation, excellence, and the pride I felt she displayed in herself, and her productions.

Now, a lot of those things are near gone for me. While I'm very happy and amazed that she continues to have so much passion in her music and everything she does, I'm not going to praise her every move or have a positive opinion on everything she puts out just because of it.

In my opinion, which doesn't really matter at all, she needs to step back and reevaluate what she's doing and where she wants to head with her music.

In any case, maybe her peak has just passed...I'm just sad that her peak in quality had to pass as well.

And maybe you guys don't agree with that...but...to be seriously honest, it's much less of a personal opinion than anything else in this post.

So anyway...Sunset was good I thought, for "present" Ayu anyway :rolleyes

I think it's really interesting how much cutting out the stupid male dancers and showing more of the fans does for a video.

AyuGAME 8th August 2009 09:05 AM

really simple and clean PV...
i think its suit the song characteristic...just simple and clean too...
there is some weird transition but overall i like the pv...

Andrenekoi 8th August 2009 09:07 AM

@emiko:
I think that if someone prefer old Ayu and think that present Ayu is not as good, keep with old ayu and ignore her newer releases... If you don't like an album, it's ok, it's just an album... but if you don't liked anything since 2003, 2004, maybe you should listen to other singer (in Ayu's case, cuz she released 5 albums since @_@).

I agree with MM, the fanbase needs to envolve together with the artist, but I agree with you, some people are totally happy with some era... But the singer is not part of his/her fanbase, he/she won't always like stuff that their fans like (there are a lot of Madonna haters around here for example), and will not always being interested on moving their art on the same direction their fanbase would like to

Now, everyone will always have an favorite moment on a singer career... IMO Ayu was at her best on (miss)understood era... but I'm not expecting another favorite album from her, so, I can just enjoy her newer work or predent she didn't released anything :B if she releases something that IMO is better than (m)u, I will be glad, if she doesn't, well, I still have (m)u ^^

I don't think anyone expects everyone to love what Ayu is doing, but to be continually let down/act let down/whatever, it's like holding onto a relationship that's doomed to fail, imo.

ComatoseBunnySnatcher 8th August 2009 09:18 AM

^ hey, when she raised the bar high, she was basicallyputting her head on the chopping block.

sorry if i have standards >.>

Oh xD okay.

yea, i know. We don't HAVE to love anything she does quite frankly.
I don't care how immersed she's in the music or whatever, but i know that as a consumer i have to like what i'm getting, and if i don't it's natural.

we can complain because we as fans made her.

plus, her quality HAS gone down a few points on the good scale IMO

AyUmIXx 8th August 2009 09:41 AM

Ayu is on the NEXT LEVEL, not the past anymore
maybe she likes everything looks simple now..

Yumsushi 8th August 2009 03:30 PM

You know what, good imagery can do alot of a song, but its not everything. In my case, decision is my absolute favourite Ayu song and the incredibly boring PV didn't shake my opinion one bit. And I can think of a lot of songs I love that have terrible Videos. For many people the issue with Sunset seems to be the dancers and the lack of anything happening. Because Sunrise and Sunset are so similar in melody, the comparisons are inevitable.

Unlike a relationship, Ayumi put out music that touched certain people in certain ways. I think they hold on to the idea that maybe she can touch them again in a similar way.

No one should simply move on because they don't like the current style. I'm saying that in response to someones comment.

Her quality has sunk. I hear her upbeat pop songs and they're just covered in candy coated sugar hearts. I hear her ballads and they're sung like some diva who has a bottle of Dom Perignon 1953 pouring into her glass. I hear her rock songs as if holding on to an attempt that she's not just some diva wear gucci, prada, chanel, while getting her hair feathered.

She's always going to have a place in my musical loves but she's really not the 'artist' she worked hard to be... she just comes across as an old gyaru manufactured pop singer now *shrug*

I still hold out hope that she'll reinvent herself into something drastically different again.
