To me, best Ayu album and tour ever.

I really like it, but I never listen to the whole thing. About You, GAME, and HAPPY ENDING are some of my favorite songs.

Same, I find the album kinda exhausting and dense to listen through. Plus the "main song" of the album — Moments is one of the most annoying Ayu song for me, there's something about the sound of the song that just makes me cringe. I never understood its masterpiece reputation. For me, the masterpiece is CAROLS :love

Found this video on YouTube yesterday of this 3 guys playing this game about Ayu. One guy would give a keyword related to an Ayu song and he would sing 3 different songs and the other guys have to guess which one is a fake ayu song. It's kinda of funny lol Also the guy keeps mimicking the Marionette meme lol

MY STORY is so good but it is very long. Memorial address executes a similar quality if not equal with less than half the length. The length is not THAT bad to have but if you are trying to listen to an album all the way through, a few others are better for that.

My Story is enjoyable but a little overrated. Speaking of ballad sections (miss)understood has my fave!

DonkeyKongRemix 6th March 2020 01:36 AM

My Story is great. I love most of the songs on there but Walking Proud and Winding Road are my favorites. I think it's great that she has an album that long. :)

For me, this is where the Hamasaki Ayumi I love was born. I didn't like Ayu's early stuff at all. Going back and listening after becoming a fan I've come to enjoy some of it, and to adore the lyrics, but it was My Story that took my breath away. It still can.

I love most of the songs on it (Humming 7/4 is still in my workout music rotation), but "About You" is still, in my opinion, just about the most perfect combination of Ayu's work--the music was bangin', the lyrics were powerful, her voice sounded perfect, and the video was out of this world. Whenever I want to explain Ayu to someone I show About You (or Mirrorcle World, but that didn't come until years later).

My Story, imo, is the bridge between "old" Ayu and "new" Ayu. Her style and image before My Story is still my favorite, as I feel that her first 3 albums are so incredible. However, I love most of My Story. I hate telling people this but My Name's WOMEN is still one of my least favorite songs if hers.

My favorite album!
I loved the era. She had good balance between aggressive pop rock songs and emotional ballads.
What made it my best, in parallel of the singles, is the 3 trio promoted album tracks : About you, walking proud and MY NAME´S WOMEN.
The tour is IMO her best concert!

the ballads are perfect, also great rock tracks (GAME, my name's WOMEN, About You), but some of her worst tracks are also there (Replace, HONEY, Humming 7/4) it also has one of my favorites Ayu tracks which for me is her most underrated one: Liar.

Darkifrit 6th March 2020 08:35 AM

Yeah it’s true the last few tracks of the album are quite lackluster but the first 2/3 are so great. In fact when I listen to the album, I often stop after INSPIRE (or HONEY depending my mood).

truehappiness 6th March 2020 09:17 AM

Replace is so nice lyrically, I love listening to it if it ever comes on. I think HONEY gets a bit too saccharine though but Ayu has said that about it and I believe it was the only Nagase-related song she did too.

It's so weird that Liar was sort of an accident that as a song wasn't supposed to be given to Ayu but then she made lyrics for it anyway, lol.

And this.

There are some songs I don’t enjoy but it’s a pretty good album. Not the best, but the start of the best Ayumi.

I love that story lol! she was like "how is it not for me? now it will be" lmao

Gustavopc 6th March 2020 05:39 PM

I never really clicked with MY STORY nor most of the songs in it. Humming 7/4 is fun to watch live, INSPIRE is really catchy and Liar is quite unique, but besides these three tracks I don't really remember how most of the songs in it sound like. They're not BAD songs, but they lack something for me.

I have never watched the album tour tho, and sometimes seeing live performances makes me enjoy some songs better. Who knows maybe if avex uploads it this month I might give it a chance lol

But I can clearly see that "bridge" you guys mentioned, this was the start of the Diva ayu and from then on she kept a great momentum for years.

hud 6th March 2020 05:41 PM

↑ you should really give the tour a try! I'll upload it on gdrive so you can stream it.

Gustavopc 6th March 2020 05:53 PM

I'd love that sooo much! Tks!

It's funny, but I rarely listen to anything from My Story, even though I like the album. The first time I saw Ayu live was CDL 04-05, and this had come out right before then. I remember listening to it nonstop on my discman (lol) on the plane to Japan, with extra batteries in my bag just in case. So for that reason, it'll always hold a soft spot in my heart. I never have, and don't think I ever will, like Liar. I don't hate it, but it's a low point on the album for me.

But generally speaking the whole My Story - (Miss)understood - Secret era is a bit of a blur. There are a lot of really high points in that range, but I felt some of the songs were over-produced, and a little too perfect...like they missed some of the grittiness of her earlier (and later) music.

I've never heard this story, could you elaborate?

As for MY STORY: it has many amazing songs but as an album, it's brought down by the crushing length. Too many songs that feel like filler (even if they're decent songs). I feel like I have pretty unusual tastes for the songs on the album, as HONEY and winding road are some of my favourites while songs like About You, CAROLS, and INSPIRE don't really do anything for me. HAPPY ENDING - Moments - walking proud is everything though. :luv2
