^Thanks! Going to download and listen! Excited!

^No problem, just reposting a link! Hope you enjoy! :)

Well, after about five times listening through the whole album, I can safely conclude that it's way too distracting to be studying music and... I think I'd better keep the rest in spoilers. My two cents regarding the album:

Spoiler:
Track-by-track, oh yeah. This is gonna take a good while.

1. TR∀NSFoRM - Meet the harder little sister of 2009's fan favorite single SCREW. TR∀NSFoRM is a very catchy and nice trance-rock hybrid, but, personally, I was never the biggest fan of SCREW and I'm not totally loving this track right away either. It's not awful to listen to at all, but I just tend to prefer my music slightly more melodic. However, I grew to like SCREW quite a lot, and I think I'll also grow to love TRANSFoRM, because I'm already liking it more than I initially liked SCREW (though that isn't to say much...). Still, a nice way to kick off the album and definitely a good preview of things to come.

2. Mirai Ressha - My god, the amount of cuteness energy in this song. I love Mirai Ressha, hands down. It may be all saccharine and sunshine but hot damn it's catchy and uplifting and a good dose of saccharine music is sometimes very healthy. kz's arrangement is excellent. KOTOKO's chipmunky cute vocals caught me way off guard here though. I think it could have worked with her normal vocals too and might have sounded a bit less... surprising then? But it's very, very nice like this too.

3. Metal Link - This song is quite short by KOTOKO standards - and by I've standards too. It's just a bit over three minutes, which is pretty disctracting when I'm used to KOTOKO's songs being at least four and a half minutes long, lol. Moving on, the chorus is bothering me here. The instrumental becomes a messy wall of music and KOTOKO's vocals just drown in there. It sounds like it was recorded by a garage band that can't afford proper recording equipment. I blame the mixer. Other than that, it's a nice song with a good composition and arrangement. Rock-ier than KOTOKO's usual stuff. I just have a problem with the chorus.

4. Love Letter - Here we have one of my favorite songs on the album. It's really nice and easygoing and KOTOKO sounds damn good. It's also a nice stop for breath with its slower tempo because this album is packed full of fast songs. I think comparing this one and Metal Link (and some other non-I've songs on the album) shows how well I've producers handle KOTOKO's vocals compared to "outsiders" - the difference is pretty clear and I far prefer the I've style. I also applaud this song for perfectly fitting this album while still carrying a distinct I've flavor.

5. Aoi Jeep de - This is also a rock song, but a lot lighter and poppier than many on this album. I guess it could be compared to bumpy-Jumpy!. It's like a faster and slightly rockier bumpy-Jumpy!, more emphasis on the guitars than the synths. It's catchy and energetic and KOTOKO sounds great. Another good song I can't really find anything to nitpick about.

6. mirror garden - Oh boy, KOTOKO should have left this cuter voice in Mirai Ressha where it belongs. This song is far too dark for cute vocals and she sounds completely out of place. It's bothering me to no end, espeacially in the chorus. The way vocals are generally handled in the chorus is quite questionable too - the background "scream" would probably be ear-piercing if played in higher volumes. But even that problem could be solved with a different singing style, I think. This song should come with Abyss vocals instead of Mirai Ressha vocals. Damn you, Natsume Susume (who's apparently the vocal director). Otherwise, it's not too bad of a song. I actually like the arrangement.

7. Command+S - This song sounds a lot like a remix. It starts out like many a remix would and the arrangement in general is giving me huge remix-vibes. I might not even believe it's an original song if the vocals were handled a bit differently and I didn't know better. Command+S is easily the longest song on the album, clocking at slightly over eight and a half minutes. The length doesn't bother me at all since I love long songs the trance arrangement is pretty damn good, KOTOKO's vocals fit in seamlessly and the composition is quite nice. I just wish the instrumental changed a bit more when the chorus comes up, because it doesn't change pretty much at all and that can make the song sound a bit monotonous at first. Tl;dr this song is awesome. Also lulzy lyrics ftw: "I think I was born~, I just sing lalala~"

8. X-kai- - I'm not too crazy about the rapping at the beginning of the verses, but other than that, it's a very good song. This song is dark, with strong rock vibes, and something MELL could also pull off very nicely. The song lacks a real chorus, but it's not a ticket to doom with the verses pulling of their job quite nicely (the same thing never bothered me with MELL's Fascination either). The vocal part just before the lalalas is really lovely, but that final note sounds sooooo off. Really, that's my biggest complaint about this song.

9. Sa.yo.na...ra - Quite a wild song, to put it mildly. The arrangement, especially the synths, is all over the place and only eases down at some parts. Makes me miss Love Letter's simplicity. This song is completely chaotic and can get very annoying at times... but I wouldn't say I hate it. It does have its charms. It maybe one of those songs you love one day and wish they would stop existing the next day. Also probably very polarising, easy to hate but quite easy to like too.

10. beat - A damn great song. Once again, we have a catchy track with trance and rock influences. I just love the part before the chorus where two vocal tracks are layed over each other, it makes a great atmosphere. The chorus is also pure earcandy. Complaints? It's under four minutes long. Shame on you, KOTOKO, shame on you.

11. Kikoeru - For a ballad, it has quite a loud start. It's okay, nothing too spectacular. Really, just one more quite forgettable C.G Mix ballad to add to the pile. But, like Love Letter, it's a nice chance to catch some breath between all these fast and furious songs. And it would be very wrong to accuse it of being unpleasant to listen. I do, however, wish KOTOKO went slightly less cutesy on this one, because I'd like to hear her clearer voice, which might suit a ballad like this better (on the other hand, it might make the song more boring, but... I dunno).

12. Hirake! Sora no Oto - To be honest, this is a very bland piece of pop-rock, especially compared to some of the more stand-out tracks on this album. At least KOTOKO's vocals are very nice. The very out-of-place synth strings at the end of the choruses are quite amusing. Probably my least favorite song on Hiraku Uchuu Pocket, because it's blander than anything else she bothered putting on this album.

13. Chikyuu -TERRA- - This is a very nice song. The chorus is epic and the verses are beautiful. It could probably have a slightly less abrupt transition from chorus to verse, but, really, it's very fine the way it is. One real complaint, however: it's not a fitting last song. I think the last song on an album should leave a complete feeling that makes it clear that the album ends here, thanks for the ride. Usually KOTOKO's albums have succeeded with this (Akai Tama, Aoi Tama, Sekka no Shinwa and LITTLE BABY NOTHING all were fitting final songs), but Chikyuu just seems to end too abruptly and leaves me expecting for more.

Overall: I really liked this album, even with all the minor nitpicks. It's the darkest and rockiest album KOTOKO has ever done, which I wasn't expecting at all. In general, pretty much all of the songs are very catchy and memorable and simply good, with a few bumps in the road here and there. The dominating combination of trance and rock is omni-present and even the slower and poppier songs share similarities in their arrangements that make them feel right at home in this album. Nice flow and a cohesive collection of songs aren't attributes every album just automatically has. I think this album has already climbed to the second-favorite spot on my KOTOKO albums ranking, beating UZU-MAKI but slightly losing to Garasu no Kaze. And, as I was hoping and expecting, it easily puts Epsilon no Fune to shame. I'm probably buying this as soon as I get the chance.

However, I couldn't help but notice that the I've tracks on this album tend to be a notch better than the tracks by the other, newly acquired producers. Especially the handling of KOTOKO's vocals is, at times, a bit shaky when new people are involved and good old I've people clearly do a superior job. I hope it won't become a recurring problem in her post-I've works, because she has a great voice. However, the reason her voice is handled better on the I've Sound produced tracks is most likely because the I've producers have over the years learned how to bring out the best in her and over time, other music makers will probably learn too. Really, these are probably just growth pains, the compulsory blocks on the road, which will be dealt with over time.

Also, I've got to say the booklet looks very cute (KOTOKO popping up from random space pockets, wheeeeeeeee!) and has some very nice shots (the picture next to the credits page is probably one of the best pictures of her I've seen). Which is of utmost importance, of course. Hiraku Uchuu Pocket also beats Epsilon no Fune in terms of booklet, I'd say.

I should probably start a blog or something, the amounts of text I'm spamming here are getting ridiculous. :P

In a nutshell: this is an awesome album I'd definitely recommend to pretty much anyone. Personal favorite tracks: Mirai Ressha, Love Letter, Command+S and beat.

So, what did everyone else think of KOTOKO's fifth album? :D Great? Awful? Favorite songs? Least favorite?

Kacku 15th October 2011 07:09 PM

Hiraku Uchuu Pocket grabbed #21 on Oricon charts during its first week, selling 5 200 copies. Interestingly, it sold less than Mami's LINKAGE but landed a better position.

More interestingly, we now have some new info about KOTOKO's upcoming single, Light My Fire, which is only a month away. For starters, the cover:

http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

Then, there's also a preview of the PV. The Shakugan no Shana III opening video (in which this song is featured) is also up on Youtube. Not to mention the full leaked song! I'm only posting the PV preview, because it's got the best sound quality and KOTOKO looks damn great in it.

In other words, all we're missing about this single now is information on the b-side. :P

Ranma Matsuri 21st October 2011 04:30 AM

^Definitely wasn't expecting that. Not sure I'm feeling the song and the PV seems pretty eh. KOTOKO looks and sounds great though.

Kacku 29th December 2011 10:03 AM

2011 is ending soon, but things concerning I've are only getting more and more interesting. The newest development seems to be Mami Kawada doing a KOTOKO: she's apparently also moving from Geneon Universal to Warner Home Video. Find her new site here and also hear out the previews for her new single Serment, coming out on the 1st of February 2012.

However, unlike KOTOKO, Mami Kawada seems to be keeping her I've ties intact. Serment is fully I've-made with Kawada's go-to guys Tomoyuki Nakazawa and Takeshi Ozaki handling the compositions and arrangements. I wonder if this means I've as a whole is breaking up with Geneon. Considering Kaori Utatsuki is releasing a single under I've in Comiket right about now, MELL is quiet and LSP never was under Geneon to begin with, it certainly seems so.

Oh, speaking of LSP, they're releasing their second single on January 25th. It's called "Trip -innocent of D-" and, surprise surprise, also has an anime tie-up. More interestingly, the cover and full credits are out:

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/pictures/l/11/04/LACM-4894.jpg

Trip -innocent of D-
Lyrics: Airi Kirishima
Composition: C.G Mix
Arrangement: C.G Mix and Takeshi Ozaki

Chapter.5
Lyrics: Airi Kirishima
Composition: Kazuya Takase
Arrangement: Kazuya Takase and Takeshi Arai

It's nice to see Airi writing the group's lyrics. Oh and I suppose there's also a preview up for the a-side but I'm too lazy to dig it up at the moment.

And finally, Comiket 81 starts today if I'm not mistaken and we have three products of potential interest to I've fans: the aforementioned brand new single from Kaori Utatsuki, called Toki no Tsubasa and featuring three new songs; a first release from LSP's quiet-until-recently girl, Rin/Lin Asami (how does one romanize), a single called "Got it!! -Extended ver.-" containing Got it!! -Extended ver.- (would you believe it), and English version of the song (I'm dreading it) and an instrumental; and finally, a brand new Eiko Shimamiya produced mini album called 5TEARS and featuring vocal talents such as KOTOKO, Eiko Shimamiya herself and Tae, who might also be familiar to some under the name lela. Oh and some women called karuta and Kaori Tsubaki, completely unfamiliar names to me. I'll admit I'm the most excited for 5TEARS since there's been a Promotional Video floating around for a while and I've loved most of what I've heard.

Someone else likes it too, right? And if anyone's interested, some small previews for Rin and Kaori's singles can be found on I've's official site (http://ive.mu/c81.html).

Anyway, here's me, waiting for the Comiket goodies to pop up.

(I meant for the opposite of this long-ass infobomb to happen.)

Kacku 8th April 2012 01:54 PM

FINALLY some signs of life from I've. June 29th, we will get two new compilation albums: G.C.BEST I’ve GIRL’s COMPILATION BEST with 24 tracks selected from the seven compilation albums and オマイラBEST SHORT CIRCUIT BEST with 13 tracks from the three SHORT CIRCUIT albums. So... compilation albums of compilation albums. I don't exactly see the point. At least both albums will have one new song.

However, the cool thing is that fans can vote for their favorite songs and a handful of the winners will get a free ticket to the album tracklists. How will they pick the rest Voting happens here: http://ive.mu/best.html Go ensure your favorites get picked!

In other news, KOTOKO has a new single coming up on 16th of May. →unfinished→ is composed and arranged by Satoshi Yuginuma of fripSide and sounds as such. Mami Kawada also has an upcoming (I've-produced) single called Borderland, out on 30th of May.

taskinillusion 25th April 2012 06:19 PM

Also some new KOTOKO news that I recently learned: KOTOKO will be attending North Carolina's Animazement! (From @animenewsnet on Twitter http://4NN.cx/88592)

Kacku 11th May 2012 04:05 PM

I hope there will be some KOTOKO fans to meet her at the convention and show her that some people do know about her outside of Japan! I'd love to see her myself but that will probably not happen anytime soon - unless she suddenly starts finding Europe extremely fascinating. :P

Hot news: Mami Kawada just announced her fourth album today! "SQUARE THE CIRCLE" is out 8/8/2012 and contains Not buts!, See visionS and Serment plus 10 brand new songs. And that's just the regular edition; the limited edition comes with a blu-ray disc containing... actually, I think I'll just let CDJapan do the talking for me here.

In celebration of the news, here's a snippet of Mami's unreleased song 光芒 (Koubou), which was used as the ending of Shakugan no Shana's very final episode. I hope we will get a full version of Koubou on SQUARE THE CIRCLE.

Kacku 29th May 2012 05:15 PM

KOTOKO and Mami's newest singles are out. Enjoy →unfinished→ and Borderland! I really like both, but I find Borderland the superior one. unfinished's b-side is great though. (download links from j-mp3.info)

In other news, Eiko Shimamiya is also up to something: she's releasing a new single unfortunately only sold at her upcoming live "Eiko Shimamiya Real OoParts 2012". I say unfortunately because a preview of the single's titular song sounds pretty amazing. The single is called "Onkalo" and you can find the preview →here←.

^The song titles and credits are out! And covers too!

http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/I/51fNc8OyrHL.jpg

For G.C BEST: Blaze a trail, lyrics and vocals by Mami Kawada, composition from Kazuya Takase and arrangement by good ol' TakaNakaZaki combo. If nothing else, I expect a great arrangement for this song because Mami and TakaNakaZaki have always turned out gold (for all of their two songs together, but still, those were great).

http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/I/51Yvg47lyWL.jpg

For Omaira BEST: Sig-naL ~0時過ぎのSpace soldier~, lyrics from Airi Kirishima, composition by C.G Mix, arrangement by C.G Mix and Takeshi Ozaki (who have teamed up for at least LSP's Trip - innocent of D- before) and vocals will be handled by a "new denpa unit", Pixy Lab. (The dot is actually a part of their name.) Rumors run wild as to who form Pixy Lab. Personally, I support the theory that it's Kaorin and someone from LSP. After all, what would I've denpa be without KOTOKO AND Kaorin? If not that, it could be nao. We'll see.

And for the record, I quite like the BEST albums' tracklists. On G.C BEST, pretty much everyone of importance in I've history is represented, from MOMO and SHIHO to even Lia. Although they could cut some KOTOKO songs and give a better example of MELL's stuff and Eiko and Kaorin probably could also use another song. I'm also happy both of the I've Special Unit songs are included, they're great!

Omaira BEST is also nice, nothing too surprising. I just wish Hoshizora Interceptor had also made it to the list. I'd gladly drop Maple Syrup or Seishun Rocket to have it included.

Also, Eiko had her concert and dropped her single for the expecting fans. The song WAS uploaded on youtube but it was made private, like, two minutes ago, I was just looping the song before that. T_T I'll post a link once the song resurfaces. For now, you'll just have to take my word for it when I say it was a fantastic song.

emi♡ 13th June 2012 02:16 PM

^omg really. new eiko material is just *_*

Kacku 19th June 2012 06:02 PM

^Onkalo is still nowhere to be found... T_T However, we might get it soon! Eiko's REAL OoPARTS 2012 site (http://www.e-talentbank.co.jp/eikoshimamiya/) was recently updated with a thank you video from the artist herself (go check it out!) thanking everyone for attending and telling she really enjoyed performing with a full band and singing nostalgic songs and new songs. And that's not all! In the video, she also mentioned Onkalo getting a "sekai debut" (those exact words) and sure enough, there's a new text snippet under the Onkalo preview saying that it's been decided to be released worldwide and it'll be available for purchase on the site soon. I'm waiting anxiously for new developments (and wishing I could understand something other than "sekai debyutto" from what she says about Onkalo so I would know what exactly is going on ''OTL).

In other news, our girl KOTOKO will be performing at a-nation this year! She's going to be a part of the ANISON GENERATION (surprise) on 3/8. Girl better have her A-game on and charm a bunch of new fans out of the audience!

Kacku 21st June 2012 09:33 AM

"Sekai debut" for Onkalo has happened! Eiko's concert site put up a link to buy the actual, physical CD (and here I thought they were plotting a digital release). For anyone interested, you can purchase the single here. The site can be viewed in English, looks pretty legit and the price doesn't seem too awful either, seeing as it contains shipping and all. I really want to buy the single, myself, since I really loved the title song and they've made it so easy.

primavera♥ 27th June 2012 05:25 PM

I was not aware that there was a new Eiko single but I would certainly like to hear it now.

Kacku 28th June 2012 01:00 PM

^The full version is still nowhere to be found, but the short version is still available here. That said, I just ordered a copy of the single today! I'll certainly rip it when it arrives (wonder how long that'll take...) but I hope other people could buy the single too.

The I've Best albums are coming out tomorrow! Can't wait to hear the new songs.

EDIT: Apparently, there's no need to fork over money for a physical copy of the Onkalo single, an iTunes release is planned on July 7th! I hope some people will take the chance and buy Onkalo on iTunes.

Also, Eiko revealed in an article that the single's title comes from Onkalo, a nuclear waste disposal facility here in Finland. She also tells something about the songwriting process and the song's message in the article, but I couldn't understand anything more with my nonexistent Japanese knowledge. @_@ Anyone able to translate a little something? Because, I'm terribly intrigued. OTL

Kacku 2nd July 2012 02:49 PM

Sorry for double-posting again, but this is pretty biggu newssu. The compilation-compilations are hardly out of the way and another compilation is already coming up! I've GIRL's COMPILATION Vol. 8, LEVEL OCTAVE will be released on August 31st! Here's the cover.

http://livedoor.blogimg.jp/rskblog/i...b/3bd6c48f.jpg

The tracklist is still →unfinished→, but the compilation will contain at least the following songs:
* KOTOKO - U make Ai dream
* Lia - Light Colors
* Kaori Utatsuki - Niji-iro Rock'n'Roll
* Kaori Utatsuki - Hold on me ~Koi no Mahou~
* Mami Kawada - INITIATIVE
* Larval Stage Planning - Rolling Star
* Airi Kirishima - IN MY WORLD
* Nami Maisaki - piece of my heart
* Rin Asami - lead to the smile

And in case anyone wants them, have some links for the compilation-compilations: G.C.BEST & Omaira BEST. (Links courtesy of Treize from I've Sound Forum)

Kacku 4th July 2012 07:41 PM

Hello! Sorry for bumping this thread again (I swear, I'll stop doing this every two days ''OTL), but I felt the need to advertise a little. I received a copy of the fantastic Eiko Shimamiya -produced mini album 5TEARS today, ripped and scanned the contents and uploaded it for all those who have yet to hear it. Seriously, if you like I've Sound, and especially if you like Eiko Shimamiya's music, you need to hear this. If you happened into this thread by accident, you need to hear it! Please do download, and I hope you'll like what you hear.

>> Download thread here <<

PS. The scans are kinda... awful. Sorry, I did what I could but my scanner is just... awful. I swear the booklet looks much better in person.

Kacku 9th July 2012 12:42 PM

Pop!

I'm sorry to spam this thread again (at least I took five days off this time), but I feel like I should spread the word: Eiko Shimamiya's Onkalo is up on iTunes all over the world! Search it and buy it, it's dirt cheap! I would do so myself right away, but I don't have an iTunes account and it seems I won't be getting one anytime soon either.

... Or, you know, just download it for free from here. I really hope some people will still buy it from iTunes though! It's so easy and cheap!

Still waiting for my physical copy... At least it's been shipped out already. I hope it arrives soon.

Pop!

EDIT: My copy of Onkalo arrived today!

http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/249/onkalo.jpg

I'm a happy owner!

Also, Eiko Shimamiya is super sweet on her Facebook. She replied to my silly little message and even reposted my silly little picture saying she was glad I had bought a copy of Onkalo. Feeling slightly nerdy joy here. Gotta love social networks.

In other news (as in, actual news), the cover for Mami Kawada's upcoming album has leaked!

http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/I/51YmQwmN42L.jpg

I LOVE it.

KOTOKO will be performing at a-Nation?! Wow, that's awesome!
