Q: What's the best memory of summer?
JJ: Of course it's a-nation. I had a lot of fun this year. A-nation is the best!
YC: A-nation was a good memory too, but I think that the activities Jaejoong and I did were more memorable. Because we haven't done activities with just the two of us before, we thought that photographing and doing interviews together would be a bit strange at first. But, it was very fresh, and we enjoyed it. It was a happy experience.
Q: What have you left undone this summer?
YC: I wasn't able to find love. I have done all the other things, but this one was the only one left undone.
JJ: For me, it's travelling. I wanted to go travelling during that one week holiday, but I caught a cold...
Eventually, I just stayed in bed the whole time, that was such a shame.
Q: What do you want to do this year?
JJ: We're composing another new song right now, and we want to finish it. Of course we want to compose for Tohoshinki, but we also want to compose for other artists to sing. It's just, no matter how many times we've said we would offer a song, no artists have yet told us that they need a song. That's why, if other artists tell us that they want a song to sing, we want to do our best composing for them.
YC: I want to find love. Because I didn't find it in summer, I want to do it within this year.
Q: Any recent interesting episodes?
JJ: Yoochun started waking early in the morning. Up until now, Yoochun always went to bed later than everyone else, woke up later than everyone else, the one to sleep once again when we arrive on scene, and who's always later than everyone else in preparation.
YC: But, the last part is "who works harder than everyone else". (laughs)
JJ: Because Yoochun works to hard, his spirits lift really high. So once again, he starts to sleep late and wake up late (laughs). That was Yoochun’s pattern before. Recently, he wakes up even earlier than me, and even eats breakfast properly and it really surprised me.
YC: Yup. Until now I never used to eat breakfast, but recently I do.
JJ: Our manager was really happy about that.
YC: Before I knew it, my living style changed. It’s properly more healthy and better this way, but sometimes I want to return to the way I used to be. If you ask why, it’s because I want to enjoy the nightlife. But because I wake up too early, I get sleepy and can’t stay up.
Q: A word about each other's character?
JJ: Yoochun’s stingy! I’ve never seen anyone so stingy before! (laughs)
YC: Eh? Which part?
JJ: When we go out to eat together, he always says to me, “Jaejoong, pay.”
YC: That’s because Jaejoong is my hyung.
JJ: Do you really think I’m your hyung?
YC: (immediately in honorifics) I think so. I admire you. I want to become like Jaejoong.
JJ: Even though there’s a warikan (split the bill) culture in Korea, when a man and woman goes eating together, the man usually pays. When a senior and junior goes together, the senior usually pays. But, if you say this, doesn’t that mean I’m the one who will always pay because I’m the oldest one in Tohoshinki? That’s why, when I went to eat with Yoochun, I thought we would split the bill. But, not so long ago when I went to eat with Yoochun, before I could say split the bill, I’ve noticed that he sneaked out of the shop. (laughs)
YC: I just returned home first. (laughs) But, from that time, I got into the sleeping early/waking early thing. That’s why I need to thank Jaejoong for making me an early sleeper and early riser. (laughs)
JJ: So it was from that time (laughs). But from now on, let’s split the bill, ok?
YC: I understand. We’ll split the bill.
JJ: Really. If you don’t split the bill (warikan), then I’ll shave your head with an electric shaver (barikan). Word play on warikan and barikan
We were able to do a live at Tokyo Dome because of our fans!
Colors~ Melody and Harmony~ was a song introduced at the Tokyo Dome.
JJ: Yes. It’s a song Yoochun and I composed for Tokyo Dome’s concert. That’s why I wanted to compose a song to sing that can be sung with everyone at the venue. Because of that, I thought of a melody which everyone can sing upon the first time hearing it.
YC: Jaejoong thought of the overall balance, and the two of us discussed about the melody while composing. We had the concept of “a song everyone could sing” from the start, and it went really smoothly. Having an image in mind while writing the rap part makes it easy. Because I was reminded of an innocent smile while making a Christmas tree, I was able to finish it in 10 minutes.
That’s a very specific image. Is that a request you have of a lyricist in relation to the lyrics?
YC: Yes. This is not just about love, but we hope you can paint a picture of a bigger love in the song. Because we aimed to sing at Tokyo Dome, we thought that a song with a bigger love was more appropriate.
JJ: That’s why finishing the lyrics to the song this time was such a satisfaction to us. It was beyond imagination.
All 50,000 people sang with you during the Tokyo Dome concert.
JJ: That was the best feeling ever. Colors~Melody and Harmony~ was a song to say thank you to all the fans who supported us. That’s why I wanted to sing a song with everyone. Being able to accomplish that made me really happy.
I see. It was a song that infused all of Tohoshinki and their fan’s feelings then.
JJ: Yup. It was.
YC: To be able to hold a concert in such a vast venue was all thanks to our fans. Standing on that stage made me really happy and it was really fun.
In the CD version, there’s a live version of the song sung at Tokyo Dome. Those cheers still sound so real and outstanding.
YC: Still, I wondered if they were able to remember it after hearing it for the first time. I was a little worried, but when everyone did sing with us, I was really happy. Everyone sang clearly with us, and the “lalala” part in the live version builds up on you.
-I also went to Tokyo Dome, and I remember that scene. Everyone became one in the song and it was really wonderful.
JJ: Yes. It was on purpose. (laughs) I’m really glad we composed this song.
-And there’s also “Shelter” in the double-A single. This is a danceable song.
JJ: Shelter was a song we composed recently. To make “Colors~ Melody and Harmony~ “ into a single, the members told me to compose one more song. So I started composing without a thought in mind, and I was troubled because the chorus wasn’t good. And then Junsu came in suddenly and sang the chorus, asking “How’s this?” (laughs) After listening to it later on, I thought it was really good and accepted it. (laughs) The A and B melody sounds really lonely, but the chorus is really passionate/bright. And so it became a really interesting song. Furthermore, I composed the A and D melody, Yoochun did the rap for B melody, and Junsu did the chorus. Because all three of us participated, it was really interesting.
-Yoochun, did composing the rap for this song go as smoothly as the rap in Colors~ Melody and Harmony~?
YC: Shelter was troubling. (laughs).
-Really? (laughs) Why?
JJ: We told Yoochun there was going to be a rap in B melody 2 days before recording. (laughs)
YC: But he only told me there was going to be a rap in part B. I could do the rap in 10 minutes if there was only one part, so I went to the studio thinking I would do it there. But really, there were 3 rap parts and it surprised me. (bitter smile) That’s why I really worked hard in the studio.
JJ: Eh? Yoochun, didn’t you sleep though? (laughs) If you listen carefully, the rap in 1B and 2B are completely different. The rap in 1B had a really low tension, and it ascends a lot in 2B. That’s because Yoochun recorded 1B right after he woke up. (laughs) He used the fact that he had just woken up to do a husky voice in a low tone in 1B. (laughs)
YC: That was on purpose (laughs). I thought a low tone would be good for 1B, and I didn’t sleep either. I only slept for 13 minutes (laughs).
-So that was what happened? (laughs) But, to have 1B done in a low tone, and for it to get brighter from 2B really matches the song’s atmosphere.
YC: Isn’t it? That’s why, it was on purpose (laughs). I calculated that far (laughs).
