Ayu's cover of Movin' on without you was so great-- I'm wondering if maybe Hikki will return the honor and cover an Ayu classic on her upcoming album? After all, they are both the queens and Ayu has been around just as long as Hikki has!

What Ayu song would you guys most like to hear Hikki sing if this were to happen? I think I'd really like to hear Dearest or A Song for xx :heart I think Hikki could do awesome renditions of either!

Andrenekoi 17th April 2016 05:59 PM

I would like to see how she woud perform on a Ayu rock track! I love when they both go rock, but they do it on such a different way!

That being said, being surprised would be the best

Zahara 17th April 2016 06:51 PM

For some reason, I can totally see Utada covering Moments.

Minttulatte 17th April 2016 09:34 PM

Hikki should cover HEAVEN and rearrange it into R&B.

Zeke. 17th April 2016 09:37 PM

Could she do RAINBOW, or is that out of her range? I always found Be My Last to share similarities with that piece. She could probably make it work with her breathy vocals. I could hear her doing it with a piano and/or maybe a guitar.

OMG that would be so epic, but I don't know what Hikki thinks of ayu, do you remember that episode where one fan asked her to collaborate with ayu and she was not very happy

"not very happy" is a stretch..she just seemed kinda bemused and surprised that someone would ask her something so random on a radio station with listeners/DJs that would have no idea who Ayu even is.

Utada has said in the past that she loves singing Ayu songs at karaoke and all the artists/bands featured on Utada's cover album were personally hand picked and asked to participate by Utada herself.

Miduhyo 18th April 2016 03:08 AM

^ I didn't know she picked them herself. That's so cool! I would've been honored had that happened to me xD

To be honest, I'd love Utada to do a try with Hanabi. It just seems like a song she could put her own magic in and make it just as wonderful as Ayu did/does without losing the essence. (Also, it's my favorite Ayu song and I'm biased 100% towards it but that's irrelevant.)

Also it wasn't the only time a random fan brought in Ayu to one of her interviews... It probably was really annoying for her to try to sell herself as a musician and people acting like had anything to do with the career of some girl she only interacted with once or twice.

I would actually prefer Utada cover teddy bear, CAROLS, rainy day, or JEWEL. I think they fit Utada's current direction while also bringing a respectable cover to a tribute album. Truly, I think the worst thing would be to give Utada a song that isn't emotional, as she has done so well with pouring an experience into songs over the last few years.

ahtka-chan 18th April 2016 05:40 AM

I think I'm the only one here pretty happy without her covering ayumi hahaha

DeepRiver 18th April 2016 10:49 AM

No... please Hikki, don't do it!

hikki should definitely cover even a few of ayu's songs :yes
I'm sure she can have an amazing input out of them just like ayu did with Movin' on without you, just different of course.

Are you guys reading the onehallyu translation? 'Cause it has mistakes.

I also made my own, if anyone is interested. Ayu and Hikki's lyrics are always the most interesting to translate. They write proper sentences.

真夏の通り雨 translation:
Spoiler:
I wake from the middle of a dream
and close my eyes again, but I can’t slip back into it
The world that looked so vivid a moment ago, is now an illusion

I was sweaty but you softly pulled me close
and etched many first-times into me

How much longer until I no longer feel sad
when I reach my hand out to the rustling green leaves
and I remember you?
I want you to tell me

I’m not alone today
I guess I’m pretty happy
So, I tell myself that it’s enough this way

But I would stop being myself
if I’d forget the days when, out of breath from the unwinnable fight,
I was consumed with love for you
Tell me, what’s the right way to say goodbye to someone?

When I reach my hand out to someone
and I remember you
I’m flooded with things
that I want to tell you now

Trees sprout, days pass
I want to express my unchanged feelings
We have the freedom to become free
They stand still, the shadows of those who’ve come to say goodbye

Memories roughly grab hold of me suddenly
and don’t let go
I love you, even more deeply than before
Endless midsummer rain shower

I wake from the middle of a dream
and close my eyes again, but I can’t slip back into it
The future you were in until a moment ago
Visit, tomorrow

To the never-ending, never-ending rain
an incurable, incurable thirst

Thank you for the translation. These lyrics are just amazing. They bring back some raw feelings about a death in my own family, so just reading the translation without hearing the song reduced me to a sobbing mess (and re-reading just now did it again). The way she puts the loss and grief into words is just... wow. (And you obviously translated it really well, tenshi no hane, thank you so much!)

That said, I actually prefer Hanataba out of these two songs. It's certainly the more conventional song, but I like that it's catchier, and Hikki's voice is just such a delight, she's pouring so much warmth and sweetness into this song. Manatsu leaves me wishing there was a little something more in the song, but I'm not sure what exactly I'm missing (Some breathing room between the stanzas? Some more emotion in Hikki's vocals? Something more in the arrangement?). The ending is my favourite part of the song, so haunting. The arrangements in both songs are great.

I wouldn't be opposed to Utada covering Ayu. I mean, I could never imagine Ayu singing Movin' on without you and it turned out great.
