^A lot of First Love's success (the single I mean) had to do with Majo no Joken. That show had major star power and it was controversial; its how I was first introduced to Utada at least.

None of us tried to bash DBSK nor Utada we were simply discussing sales...to be honest I am actually hoping that DBSK will end arashi's reign~

Nooooo. :P Putting my Arashi-fanness to the side, I don't see that happening. Tohoshinki is very much rooted in the obsessed pre-teen/teen girl fanbase whereas Arashi has that too, but has also expanded beyond that - you can see in the extreme longevity their releases have had and in how often their old products have been reentering the charts.

njanjayrp 27th January 2010 09:30 PM

^ lol I know, I know and I personally liked the last few arashi singles better, as DBSK have wondered into the land of really generic stuff with the last couple of singles. I just wish arashi could pull another Tokei jikkake no umbrella with the new single, or at least something more "creative" and less cheesy I don't mind them at all :P

SunshineSlayer 27th January 2010 09:34 PM

^ Yeah, I agree. Getting a bit off topic here, haha, but I've been saying in the Arashi thread that I feel their singles this year have been very safe sounding. They had much more creative singles in the past. The b-sides though for My Girl were great though.

Well... First Love was a recut single... and even if it sales were good, the single failed on charting on years-ending top100... Maybe the success of Majo no Joken really affected the album sales, cuz that was the only way to get the song... +- like Ayu with A Song for XX^^

SunshineSlayer 28th January 2010 12:47 AM

^ Ahh yes, I forgot the single was actually a recut - so what I said applies to the album instead.

Anyway, I think that 111k is still great. For me, everything above 100k is nice lol

Those people probably aren't crazy enough.

And apparently, fans all around the world are trying to get them above 500k+ in single sales, which I find rather disturbing, but I suppose that since the group is on the verge of splitting up, that's what people feel like doing. (Also, they're famous for dropping very heavily from first day sales of 100k+ to fifth day sales of like, 3k-5k.)

People talk as though the You were... / BALLAD is gonna stop charting after next week... but I think it'll probably last at least 2-3 more weeks in the top 100 somewhere.

apple-pi 28th January 2010 03:58 AM

What I've always heard about Utada Hikaru is that apparently R&B was pratically unexistant in Japan before she came along, so she gained lots and lots of attention for bringing something that sounded completely fresh. Dunno if it's true.

(I think crazy Utada fans are a lot scarier than Ayu or boyband ones because some can be total elitists with the whole "she-is-more-talented-than-u" stuff.)

Lanz16 28th January 2010 04:11 AM

How long Yw.../B was charted atm?
Is it 5th week?

brener 28th January 2010 04:43 AM

Atm I think that AVEX is using the rumors to boost their sales and popularity. The international fans already tried getting Stand by U to come back to top 3 after months (on Tuesday), but it didn't work, they are pretty much aiming for a number that is too high ^_^

I agree, that's probably the reason, but still it was a success^^ Unfortunately, they don't have the longevity when comes to sales :(

Anyway I hope next Ayu's album will do better than NEXT LEVEL, if it's true that she's going back to her usual self... Even though I have nothing against new genre as long as I like it ... :tipsy

5th Week 2nd Day
Position: Out of the top 50
Sales: x
Total Sales: x

5th Week 3rd Day
Position: Out of the top 50
Sales: 348
Total Sales: 112,297

Almost like last week's 3rd day, hopefully there will be a small drop. ^^

AyuGAME 28th January 2010 04:51 PM

the sales is so steady around 300 copies per day...

Max_ZZZ 28th January 2010 07:12 PM

does anyone have a sales update of the highest selling acts in Japan?
like 1. B'z 2. Mr. Children 3. Ayu? LOL Cause last time I checked she was second behind Southern All Stars

1 B'z 76,000,000+
2 Mr. Children 51,635,000+
3 Ayumi Hamasaki 50,453,743+
Both B'z and Mr. Children were around when Ayu was still a teenager in the 90s... I don't know if these numbers are up to date. (Ayu's numbers as far as I know, have everything before Y/B.)

With the way that they both sell, it's unlikely that she will ever overtake them.

SunshineSlayer 29th January 2010 02:00 AM

^ What is SAS's most recent overall total?

truehappiness 29th January 2010 02:07 AM

47-49 million, I guess? I don't think they sold 2 million copies in the last 2 years considering I AM YOUR SINGER or whatever sold about 600k before the hiatus...

Quote:

4 Dreams Come True 49,893,000
5 Southern All Stars 47,083,000
If Ayu is able to maintain her sales of about 700-800k total sales per year, I don't think DCT can overtake her. It's pretty nice that Ayu's able to sit up there with people who were releasing when she was still a rebel in school, haha.
