count down?
i just sat down and read the lyrics to count down, and wow. i'm blown away, i didn't think i liked the song too much at first but after really listening to it it's one of my favorites.
does anyone else think it's about her left ear and maybe how she felt at the time she found out she was going to be deaf in that ear forever? I hear some distant sound You see? The end will begin soon I'll accept it as it is On my left side |
I'm pretty certain it is about her ear, judging from the lyrics. It is a pretty powerful, meaningful song.

Yeah, people pretty much discussed this a lot since the song first came out x,x
|
count down is my favourite song too, tied with Last Links, and beats other popular choices like Microphone and Sexy little things for me. It's so emotional, this is the type of rock I love from Ayu. It's not as polished as Microphone, it feels more like Memorial address.
A lot of people are pretty sure that she's talking about her left ear, some even noted that there's a sound in the background that's used in ear tests. |
same with me, maj. it's probably count down, Last Links and then SLT or something.
sorry if this is a repeat discussion, i didn't see a topic on it but i guess it was discussed in the album thread. :P |
Even before reading the lyrics, this was the first song on the album I instantly connected with. I believe the emotion she is trying to convey comes across perfectly in this song. The whole thing is just bliss to me, start to finish. Knowing it means so much to her personally just makes it all the better.

hidarigawa means not only "left side" but it is used as "heart" as well. So this song is NOT about her ear problem, just put "heart" instead "left side" into translation and you'll see ^__^

Dude, ayu is a really great lyricist. You don't think she used the term "left side" on purpose? The fact that it could refer to either her ear or heart is EXACTLY why she'd say that instead of "mune" or "kokoro" or something, lol. :)
My personal reading of the lyrics is that when she says "this left side of mine" she means her ear, but when she says "that left side of yours" she means the heart of the person she's talking to. But yeah, it means both, no point arguing about it. All good poetry has multiple interpretations. |
I like this song very much. I find it very powerful and philosophical. Firstly, i thought of it as if something bad's going to happen and she asks, if that person, who was by her side and shared all these good times with her will be still with her and support her anyway.
But now, when I've read your discussion I understand, that partly I was wrong. And the real sens of this song really hurts. She is very strong to discuss it in her songs and share it with her fans. But, I have a question: we all know, that Japan has different strong-developped technologies, they have so many scientific bases. Why couldn't they preserve her sense of hearing? If she began growing deaf since 2002, why couldn't she make some diagnostics? Operation? |
