Who sampled who? Kumi Vs. Blackberry phone?
So I've actually known this for quite a while but since I don't actually OWN a Blackberry I didn't know the name of the Ring tone! lol!
Anyways right about the same time a snipet of Kumi's "Just the way you are" preview leaked, I was at the eye doctor's with my dad because he was getting lasecks (spelling)? Anyways this much MUCH older caucasian lady's phone rang and I immediately perked up because I was like OMMFG! YOUR a KUMI FAN!? And she was like... I'm sorry dear Who is that? And I was like.....but.....you have a piece of her song AS YOUR RING TONE! Needless to say she didn't know what it was it was set to automatic so that was useless.....Flash forward to WAY after June 5th 2010! WAAAAY After the song was released I was in ROSS with my Boyfriend of all places and heard it AGAIN! It was on this Black ladies Blackberry! Luckily her and her son was kind enough to scroll through ALL the ringtones to find what is was called because I told them I HAD TO KNOW. So anyways the ringtone is called BB Grooves_interlude and you can hear it in Kumi's "Just the way you are" song! So my question is.....who sampled who? Someone please help! I must know! BTW here's a link so you can here it! ^_^* http://w7.funformobile.com/blog/blog...wk&p=1&aid=103 |
Wow, that's definitely the same tune! I would think the BlackBerry tune came first and Kuu sampled it. Good find!
|
That's kinda cool.
|
I think Kumi sampled blackberry...
Nice story though, I would want to know aswell if I heard something like that :D |
Kumi didn't sample it... Just The Way You Are had been composed for a while, I heard the english demo before I heard Kumi's version. If anything the original composer sampled it, or maybe sold the song to BB too?
cool find! |
ooh, i want that ringtone now.
is that ringtone on all blackberries? jtwya came out in 2008 didn't it? and the black berry has been around since 2002. I'm not sure if it has had that ringtone since way back then but if it has, then kumi sampled it. |
My brother-in-law had a phone that started playing the ringtone and I'm just like "I'VE HEARD THIS BEFORE" and then I played "JUST THE WAY YOU ARE" and he's like "Lol wat" Nice find though.

this is hilarious and kind of pathetic

^Well, for sure Kumi can't. She has a gazillion songs full of samples...
|
The same thing happened to me!
I was on vacation in South Africa, and while I was in a cab the drivers' cellphone rang and I could swer it was "Just the way you are". But I was too embarassed to ask... ^^" |
Happened to me too!
A while ago I was having italian classes, one day the cell of my classmate rang and I was like: "OMG! Koda??", but I didn't ask her because it was in the middle of the class and she turned off her cell very quickly. |

I guess I understand why you're upset. I just tend not to think about it. Things like that are exactly why I value Ayu more as a true ARTIST than Kuu or Namie. The latter two are awesome performers though ^^ |
^* Yup. Yet another reason why I dislike Amuro so much. ....But Kumi, she's getting the same way. She'll sacrifice vocals for dance moves, try way too hard to be 'sexy' or 'cool'....Puts out a bunch of generic crap half the time, and then the other half of the time it's covers/samples (which, Namie has quite a few, herself, that I didn't originally know about :O). And also like Namie, sometimes she can be so J-Pop, but then she can also be so Western-poseurish...... Oh, God, one of my favourite singers is turning into one of my least favourite. :weep Kumi still does most of her lyrics, though, and she originally did almost all of her older songs, unlike SOMEbody. :X

The thing is, that I don't see the need at all for using samples and such. With all the musical talents that Japan has, and all the power that Avex holds, it's just a matter of lazyness that she has to get songs that aren't hers. It doesn't matter if she's buying them, I just feel it isn't right. She can write decent lyrics and she has a good team behind her, why not taking things a little higher? I love Koda Kumi, she is one of my favorite artists and I respect her a lot as a performer and individual, but taking more consideration into her artistry would make her less fake and more of a musician. I know she loves music a whole lot and has been pursuing her dream of being a singer all her life; why is she letting this continue then? Just for counting, look at this small piece of her very recent discography:
-TRICK album= JUST THE WAY YOU ARE - BlackBerry sample (not counting Venus since that is stated as a cover.), This is not a love song - same instrumental as Nevena Tsoneva's "Za Tebe Pesen Niamam" -Alive/Physical Thing = Alive takes a sample from a classical piece, and they bought Physical Thing from an unknown/less budget singer. -Can We Go Back? = Just a version of the Kelly Clarkson song. It's just too much, in the honest opinion of a fan. |

Also This is not a love song = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CvZ28y2zkY |
^The last I heard was that it was a demo from GaGa. Was it proven false?
Oh my, I totally didn't know about This is not a love song. It's the same instrumental D: |
^ I think it's that before it came out, by the title of it people thought it would be the Lady GaGa demo, but it sounds like this and I only heard Kumi's version once or twice but I don't remember it sounding like that.
|
all her best songs are copied. shake it, physical thing, bounce, this is not a love song, moon crying. i mean jeeze. although i will admit i always end up liking her versions a tad more than the original.

o.O
OMG... that's exactly the same tune... oh yeah, I think Kuu sampled the Blacberry one~~ :D |
That's a cool find. :laugh
Kuu has a bunch of cover songs and some she shares with other artists, but it's pretty common for western songwriters to sell their songs to asian artists and companies, sometimes even in both worlds (in the western and Asia, that's what happens to Can We Go Back, which isn't a cover, it was sold to Kelly Clarkson and Kuu). And what's the difference between having japanese songwriters or western? The only difference is that songs are maybe written for that specific artist, but you can't always say if thats the case. And by the way, Kuu composed a few songs, Milk Tea and the Introduction for Kingdom for example are composed and written by her. And well...an artist really should just do what he or she is able to. :laugh I love my Kumi Kuu, even if all of her songs would have been cover songs. She always gives her touch to the songs (own lyrics, rearranging and such) anyway. |
^ So true. Besides, plenty of artists release songs that were actually written for a different artist. It happens all over the world.
I'm not saying I'm HAPPY that Kuu doesn't have a lot of original material, I'm just saying it's not like she's worse than most ^^ |
I don't really care if it's covered, sampled, bought as long as I like the way it sounds. I don't really bother to search for infos. If like it, I like it and basically that's it.

I don't get why people keep bringing up this whole Kuu/covers thing. Honestly, 90% of singers get other people to do everything for them, and the only part they contribute is their vocals. I mean, since most singers get someone else to compose/arrange/produce what, difference does it make if two singers sing it? It doesn't make the original singer anymore involved in the process. And so what if Kuu doesn't write all her own lyrics? That doesn't mean she doesn't work as hard. She's also known for including lots of dance into both her music videos and tours, which takes time away from writing songs that singers who don't dance have. And even with covers/samples and the like, unless you sing over the original track, there is still a lot of creative effort put into making it sound unique and different from the original song./rant, lol :P
|
I think its hard to say that its all Kumi or any artist who is just covering songs. I know songs like Cherry Girl and More where bought from the original composers of the songs. There are teams behind albums, songs, etc on deciding what is going to happen. She can be handed something from someone and told to perform it or given the song sample and decided to make it her own because she liked it.

I heard that song on an older woman's (60-70 yrs old) blackberry phone two weeks ago...I was compelled to ask her if she was a Kuu-fan, but didn't. I'm glad I hesitated...she would've thought I'd gone mad.

There's a different though between people *****ing and people that just want to discuss it. I don't see the problem in the second : P
|
^ Ex-****ing-actly. :shakehead I've been labeled as a troll by all the Kuu-stans on this forum because I've taken part in discussions relating to the fact that Kumi Koda is imperfect, such as this one. People are allowed to discuss negative things, and they're even allowed to discuss their disapproval for such things, seriously.
|
I am all good with discussion naskar, but when people post false information to try and look kuu bad it's kinda dumb. at least post the truth.

If this turns into another fight I am closing this damn thread, I swear.

I don't see a fight though. But do what you have to do ^^.
|
So, my mom is letting me pick the ring tones on her Blackberry... I'm tempted to choose this tone...
|
^ DO it! :D
