jbrat2219 16th January 2011 08:30 PM

Sweet! Hopefully the sales will reach that! But my question is, if they only ship 250k copies, it can only sell 250k copies... why not ship more? Or do they steadily ship more as weeks go by?

marekcarey 16th January 2011 08:54 PM

They shipped way more, but not 500k, and unless they ship it, it wont get the double platinum status :)

It's always a guessing game by the companies. Obviously they have to ship more than will be sold, or else there'll be a scarce, but they can also overestimate a release. Crystal Kay's Color Change! was certified Gold for 100,000 shipments, but only ended up selling 35,000 copies. Bye bye profit. On the other hand, AKB48's Beginner was already certified Million from the start, because they KNEW it'd reach and pass it.

Ayu's Next Level was her last to be certified Double Platinum, but sold like 120k short of that, so I'm guessing that they're shipping somewhere between Platinum and Double Platinum now...

Wait, does RIAJ include the shipment of all versions (Japan, Korea, HK Press) within Japan and the rest of the world?

Nope, just Japan press. After all, it stands for Recording Industry of Japan ; P

Jwiz 20th January 2011 05:18 PM

Yeah that way they'll minimize the losses, especially considering the trend of her releases. And if the shops request more albums they'll easily print some more.

Pieces_of_SEVEN 28th January 2011 08:32 PM

Were the standards for platinum lowered since 2000?
Just wondering, with the overall declining of CD sales...

As far as I know they weren't. At least not in Japan.

Pieces_of_SEVEN 28th January 2011 09:09 PM

^^So then what is it considered if a release sells a million?
quadruple platinum?

Nope. It's called Million.

Japan is the only country in the world with a "Million" certification XD. And to be honest, I think it's a bit silly. This way, you can't differentiate between an album that sells 1,000,000 copies and one that sells 1,850,000, just because the second one hasn't reached 2 Million yet. If they'd just keep Platinum, you'd see these differences.

It's what England has, with Platinum being the highest certification with 300,000 in sales. And England album sales aren't that different from those in Japan : /

Krushnic 30th January 2011 08:20 AM
