Hamasaki Ayumi becomes the top-selling female artist in music DVD sales
According to Oricon’s Weekly DVD ranking for May 9th, pop queen Hamasaki Ayumi has officially become the female artist with the highest music DVD sales in Japan!
The previous record was held by Morning Musume, who has sold approximately 2.303 million DVDs since their live concert DVD “Morning Musume Memory Seishun no Hikari” was released in 1999. Hamasaki’s most recent music DVDs “A 50 SINGLES ~LIVE SELECTION~” and “ayumi hamasaki Rock’ n’ Roll Circus Tour FINAL ~7days Special~” – which sold nine thousand and six thousand units respectively – have pushed her total sales to 2.313 million units, surpassing Morning Musume’s record by ten thousand units. Ayu broke other Oricon records just last week when her four remix albums charted in the top ten on the Oricon album charts, making her the artist with the most albums to rank in the top ten simultaneously. She also became the first female artist to hold the top two positions on the music DVD ranking when her two music DVDs were released on April 20th. Congratulations to Hamasaki Ayumi on her achievements! Source: Oricon CREDITS: TOKYOHIVE === IM SO HAPPY FOR HER! 3 RECORDS JUST DURING THIS PROMOTIONAL PERIOD! |
Wahh.. After this, she can make more different DVDs and released at the same time again :rolleyes

Awesome :) Love to see her breaking even more records.
|
Thanks for sharing! Ayu is sure is an unsurpassed girl that will last for years to come! By the way, shouldn't this be placed under the "Ayu Music News" thread because this involves music charts?
|
She's officially the #1!!! what record to break left?
|
YAY!
|
weeeee!:D ayu is invincible!^^
|
She was about 50-60k away from the record~ before these DVDs came out. MoMusu was on top from sales in like 2000-2003.
Love how she surpassed it and will probably keep the record for a LOOONNG TIME. |
Congratulations ayu =D
|
Congrats Ayumi=)
She is such a great artist and person! |

I don't understand how this make her the most selling SOLO artist as MM is not a SOLO artist...
Ayu must hold also the record of the artist with more records lol |
Congrats to Ayu~ Such an amazing woman. ^^
|
Another great accomplishment reached by little Ayu. She's such a great legend :D
|
Ayu haters, get out of here! She's not done breaking records yet, I think!

The way I'm seeing it is that while MM is still selling at least 4-5 different DVDs a year [two tours plus 3+ single Vs per year] the totals that they get from those 5 or so DVDs still doesn't add up to say, Ayu's first week of sales for a given DVD.
For example, they sell about 5,000 single Vs nowadays, so that's about 15-20k in single Vs with total sales and then about 10-12k total with their live DVDs which totals about 25-32k in sales for MoMusu each year. In one year, Ayu tends to sell at least 100k total when her CDL and ARENA TOUR sales are combined. For as long as Ayu still releases DVDs, I don't think MM will be able to get back on top unless for some reason, next year Ayu starts selling 10,000 copies of a DVD by the end of her chart run. |
^ I believe the gap is something like 13,000-20,000 copies right now, I could be wrong though. So MM probably can possibly overtake the record again by the end of the year and then it would swing back to Ayu again the next year. Also, I'm not sure what DVD releases are all getting counted for MM, like do "MM in Hawaii" or whatever DVDs count? Plus the Hello Project concerts they appear in, etc.
I just think ultimately this record is going to remain close and a permanent "winner" probably won't be decided until one or the other stops releasing for an extended period of time. |
I don't think Alo-Hello! DVDs count because they are not music DVDs.
Hello!Project is a separate entity, so I don't think they add those into their total... unless they have and every group/soloist contained in them gets "XXXXX" copies added to their total. That'd be odd... |
ALL PRAISE AYU
