Except for SMAP, everything was different... Well, there was Arashi ten years ago, but they were in its early stages, and there wasn't AKB48, EXILE, ikimono-gakari, the Koreans, or even Lady Gaga at that time...

Well if SMAP wouldn't release a donation album I don't think they would appear on top 10 as well so we are lucky XD

I'm sad to see her total sales is even lower than AKB48 1st day sales but oh well she still did better than any other singers from her era except Namie, I guess. also she doesnt have any album in top 10, the last one was A COMPLETE~All Singles~

sales are OK. they could be worse :P

Most of the people's over-all sales are lower than AKB's first day sales :P And during Ayu's era, Namie wasn't really that near to top 10 for a few years.

the fact that she's still consistent in sales is pretty amazing...
i'm a fan of akb48 but i cant guarantee they will get 100k sales on their 10th anniversary..

It's called economic, technological, aesthetic, and cultural change. You know, the slow decline of the Japanese economy, the emergence of digital media, the silver age of Japanese idol bands (the eighties were the golden age, AKB48 = Onyanko Club), the Korean wave.

We don't live in a vacuum.

I'm really careless about the sales. Before I cared. Not so much anymore. I think it's still amazing that she still gets #1! Naturally AKB48 sells more. They are the big thing in Japan right now. Ayu not so much anymore. But she still have loads of loyal fans that loves her for the one she is and she still makes amazing music. I kind of like it actually. It's like we get more of Ayu for ourselves. Lol. I'm so selfish... xD I also like it because she follows her own will and make music that she really would love to make without thinking of what would sell more (that I sometimes feel maybe creators of groups like AKB48 is more aware of). Her last albums have been so different from each other. It's amazing to see how inspired she is in different ways in different places during her life.~ ^__^

If your name doesn't have 48 in it or you're not a top selling Johnny's band, you can forget any big first week sales nowadays... it's real sad.

Everyone is buying digitally now.

Only 20% of the sales in Japan are digital while in Korea and the USA it's 50%. Legal downloads in Japan aren't a major problem when it comes to sales.

I'd love to see the #1 yearly album selling something like 4million again, I don't care who sold it, it would just be amazing.

and wasn't the ikimono-gakari album #1 or something last year? Now that's insane, when it's in the top 10 again this year.

^ Ikimonogakari's album was #2 while ARASHI's All the BEST! was #1.

4 million is enough to put an album on the top10 of best selling albums im japan's history...

I think it's still amazing that Ayu still sells CDs/DVDs/Blu-ray. We may not see Ayu sold million copies of CDs anymore and even outsold AKB48 in this era, but Ayu already prove her self. Her music from the past 13 years is still beautiful.

I don't think she was anywhere here. I mean, only five new songs this year... And the rest, well, is more suited to Ayu's dedicated fans, not usually for newcomers (remix albums, concert DVDs/Blu-rays)...
