evolution - Theme song for 2012 Japanese Movie "Helter Skelter"
Source: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/inte...ion-film-theme ARUTO@JPC
"It was announced on Thursday that "evolution," a 2001 song by Ayumi Hamasaki, will be the main theme song for the live-action film adaptation of Kyoko Okazaki's Helter Skelter psychological manga. This will be the first film to use one of Hamasaki's songs as its theme since the 2009 Dragonball: Evolution live-action film. When asked for comment, Hamasaki stated that she was a fan of the original manga, and is looking forward to seeing the completed film. Hamasaki's "evolution" single was released on January 31, 2001, and reached the number one spot on the Oricon singles sales ranking charts. Erika Sawajiri (SHINOBI - Heart Under Blade, 1 Liter of Tears drama series) will star in the film, playing the character Ririko, a model who underwent extensive plastic surgery to attain her beauty. The photographer Mika Ninagawa (Sakuran) will direct the film, while Asmik-Ace Entertainment and Shochiku will distribute the adaptation. The film's main cast includes Nao Omori as the prosecutor Makoto Asada, Shinobu Terajima as Ririko's manager Michiko Hata, Gou Ayano, Kiko Mizuhara as Kozue Yoshikawa, Hirofumi Arai, Anne Suzuki, Susumu Terajima, Kaori Momoi as Hiroko Tada, Shou Aikawa, Mieko Harada as Hisako Wachi, and Yosuke Kubozuka as Takao Nanbu. Okazaki's original Helter Skelter manga won the Manga Grand Prize at the annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prizes in 2004. The story centers on Ririko, a model who underwent extensive plastic surgery to attain her beauty. The clinic who performed Ririko's surgeries goes under investigation for questionable business practices, and Ririko's body starts to deteriorate. As the model's prominence in the entertainment industry begins to falter, so does her sanity. The film will premiere in Japan on July 14." |
o.O seriously?... this is like 11 years late lol
Nice to know though. But I doubt it will raise any sales lol |
lol song released in 2001 used as theme song 11 years later XDDD
oh Ayu |
I'm surprised they didn't have Erika-sama record something for it.
This is so random. |
Such strange news. I had thought that she re-recorded evolution and they're using the new version as the theme song.
Oh wouldn't that be fantastic? I think I read somewhere that ayu herself is a fan of evolution; I wonder what's keeping her from re-recording the song. It would be awesome to have a 2012 version of evolution with her darker, mature rockish voice. Now my mind's going. |
Wishful thinking, but maybe she will do a new vocal edit?
|
Sounds like fun
It's nice to see her music featured in big budget movies. |
The storyline seems familar..does art copy life or does life copy art? Ayu must have a good sense of humour.
|
Interesting. I am looking forward to the movie and I love the song but they couldn't find anything more current?...
|
interesting...and it will be a coming back movie of Erika?
maybe she there will be new vocal version of evolution and it will be release as digital single |
Wow, evolution's coming back to the scene! ...and so is Erika.
|
:thud
2001 song used in a 2012 film!? Whoa... I'm not sure (but it could be most likely) if Ayu's going to take part in the premiere festivities... |
Talk about an interesting development.
|
LOL!!! this is epic. Goes to show how classics will always transcend time
|
maybe ayu will re-record evolution like a 2012 version
|
pretty cool.
love the song! it needs more love! |
lol I remember seeing the trailer for this in Japan last month. The song wasn't in the trailer, but the sound of it... I just can't see it fitting in with what I saw (and what I'm reading) about the film. It's probably one of those things where the lyrics fit in more than the actual sound of the song does.
|
If someone is interested:
http://www.mangarush.com/manga/helter-skelter It displays cursing, nudity, sex and some violence, so, if you are not confortable with this kind of stuff, keep distance :P The manga can be read here... It fits Ayu very well IMO^^ |
I doubt she'll re-record it. The original version is just fine the way it is.
|
Good for ayu and good choice even though it's very old song.
I wonder if she gonna rerecorded the song or not. |
lol!! the timing is soooo late..
A rerecord would be interesting but unnecessary. maybe we'll see more evolution performances in the future then???? |

Really interesting. I wonder why this even came about?
But perhaps Ayu will release a summer single and include this on it, kind of like Secret when it was put on glitter / fated. The plot actually sounds really cool. I remember hearing news about this movie awhile ago, interesting that Ayu will be associated with it. And this sort of thing -does- happen. Using an old song as a theme song. Off the top of my head, the Japanese version of Kiki's Delivery Service used songs that were released in 1974 and 1975 as it's theme songs. The film was released in 1989. Just sayin'. haha |

On April 26th, a new poster for the upcoming movie “Helter Skelter” was revealed along with the announcement that Hamasaki Ayumi’s 20th single “evolution” (released in 2001) will be used as its theme song.
“Helter Skelter” is directed by Ninagawa Mika and marks the comeback of actress Sawajiri Erika after a five year-long abstinence from the silver screen. It tells the story of a woman named ‘Ririko’ (Sawajiri), who received cosmetic surgery on her entire body, thus allowing her to become a shining top star in the entertainment industry. Eventually, however, her body starts to deteriorate due to the procedure’s after-effects. During this time, ‘Ririko’ causes many incidents one right after another, drawing people around her into the fray. Ninagawa commented that Hamasaki and her song “evolution” perfectly match the movie’s theme and world view. “It’s a movie about a woman who flexibly keeps on her feet, although she’s getting consumed by the city called Tokyo,” she explained. “I don’t think there is any artist better suited for such a theme than Hamasaki Ayumi.” She continued, “Whether people like the song or not, they all know it’s from Hamasaki Ayumi after listening to it for a second and they are able to hum the melody. That’s proof of its wonderful originality and energy which never seemto vanish.” Hamasaki herself revealed, “With pleasure I accepted the offer, after all it was Ninagawa who wished for me to provide the theme song, and moreover, it’s a very important movie for Erika, my junior from the same agency.” She added, “I myself am very emotionally attached to this song and that’s why it makes me very happy that I’m able to give more people the chance to listen to it for the first time and let it leave an impression on them.” Sawajiri, who has been a big fan of Hamasaki for a very long time, also was delighted to hear about the collaboration and commented, “I was so happy when I heard that ‘evolution’ was going to be the theme song for this movie. I think that with Ayu’s song the movie became even more colorful and charming than it already was.” The new poster for “Helter Skelter” features an exclusive photograph taken by Ninagawa just for this purpose. It was shot on set in the room with the huge projection of a pair of lips, with Sawajiri striking a provocative expression for the camera. As typical for Ninagawa’s works, it’s a richly colored photograph that is sure to make an impact on everyone who sees it. It will be put up at cinemas nationwide starting on April 28th. “Helter Skelter” itself will open on July 14th. http://www.tokyohive.com/2012/04/ham...elter-skelter/ |

no need to re-record and most likely destroy what's already perfect. |
this is so cool.
and i hope it'll be a 2012 version, that'll be great! but guess that it won't happen. |
i hope this song will have new arrangement, new vokal, with her new vibraaaa....
|
I hope for a new rerecord also :yes like what Hikki did with Eternally for that Drama
But I wonder, why evolution? |
It would be nice if she did a re-record but I highly doubt it will happen. It seems they want to use the original for a lot of reasons. Very cool that 'evolution' got chosen for the theme song.

Just finished reading the manga. It was really good. :)
Considering this is the same director as Sakuran, this is sure to be an amazing film. I think it will be one of those films that goes down in pop culture history haha. I'm definitely going to go see it. :) |
STOP omg I have been looking forward to this movie and have read the manga a few times!! Now another reason why I am so excited! I think the reason they chose an old song has something to do with how Erika's character is a deteriorating idol (not that Ayu is, but rather that the song is something from the past).
This movie really looks to be good. I LOVE that Erika is returning to films with a character like this. The sort of correlation between the character and her real life celebrite are interesting! I am not surprised AYu is a fan of the manga. I really think every singer/actress/model/celebrity should read it. It has such great commentary on fame and the game of fame and what it does to people. Wouldn't surprise me if it influenced her back in 2003-2004 for some of her lyrics on My Story!! I could even see influence in lyrics like Do it again. Ill be in line at the theater the day it comes out in Japan! |
They're using an old Ayu song??
I'll be more excited if it's a new latest song. oh well... |
Oo nice concept of the movie :)
I hope there could be a sub-theme song for the movie too..hahaha..and Ayu will sing it..and hopefully we can get a ballad evolution for the sadder parts...heh |
Quote:
I am sure that evolution was chosen for an extremely fitting reason. |
^Exactly. It really is going to add a whole new layer to the story. I am so interested to see how the director interprets the manga. For example, in the manga the main character doesn't so much go through plastic surgery, but a more "frankenstein" like operation (although it is a great commentary on what plastic surgery really is!) It seems she is going to root this a bit more in reality then the manga (but of course use her always perfect over the top colorful style). It'll be intresting how explicit the film will be. The manga was pretty explicit, and I would imagine a film like the manga would be rated X! But I can still see the director not shying away from the dark sides of the story, after seeing Sakuran.
|
Well, IMO both Ayu and Erika fits the decadent/deteriorating idol on the public's eyes, and even among their fanbases (can't say this about Erika, but a lot of people over here for example DO believe Ayu is deteriorating on front of us). Also, the deteriorating idol is a common theme on Ayu iconography (1Love, alterna, Sparkle, Don't Look Back, Crossroad videos are all about this).
It's a classic song so people can easily recognize it during the movie... A new song would never have this effect |
^I agree. I have been studying what Japanese people react when I bring up the two stars. People really show a clear disdain of Erika, while Ayumi its more, "oh i don't follow her anymore, but she is so popular and I love (insert staple song) so much! She is beautiful!" For erika I get alot of "....oh I really don't like her" "Oh Erika..."
The general reaction seems to just be Ayu has the typical reaction of a star who has been around for so long, while the Japanese have really lost respect for Erika and disdain her because of what she did. It is interesting some images in Don't Look Back match up with images from the movie trailer and the manga! Also the FIVE photoshoot |
that is so random....
I hope she attends the premier or something need more Erika and Ayu interactions *__* |
^Yes I was hoping that too! I think the film will be very meaningful to Ayumi and to see her and Erika togetehr would be so cool!
I have to say, i think what Erika did was very immature and stupid, but i really have alot of respect for her too. She's outspoken. Something you just don't get with Japanese stars. i really like this interview with her. I think the interviewer said it perfectly She has "balls" http://www.cnngo.com/tokyo/life/erika-sawajiri-548777 And once again, there is such a STRONG bridge between Erika in real life and her character in Helter Skelter. |
Strange...
But yeah well, fun for her. I will totally go watch that movie so I guess that PR trick worked out well on me. ;) I kinda hope Ayu will include evolution on a summer single. I think it would boost the sales for the single some, not alot, but some. And please no new recorded evolution. I'm more than pleased with the original version. :yes Her voice have kind of grown out of that song imo. |
Quote:
Also, it fits perfectly the Party Queen era, as it also discuss this to some extent... |
^Oh yes most definitely. The whole lonely queen is the perfect fit in the mangas themes (Note I wasn't saying there wasn't a bridge between the character and Ayu I was just referring to Erika at the time :)
Although for those who read the manga, I am sure Ayu nor Erika are *really fully like the character. ;) I hope in the film they will make Erika's character more likeable. Throughout the manga, I would sometimes find myself pitying the main character, but then suddenly just seeing her as inhuman. (Although maybe that was the whole point, the exact feelings we have with celebrities!!) |
^Well, japanese stars tend to be kicked from the public eyes before going so far on their self destruction... But people like Britney, Whitney, Michael, Rihanna, Amy and the suiciding kpop stars also came to my mind while reading it...
|
^Yes exactly. Like these great artists who deteriorate and do horrible things to themselves...It is such a compelling theme and something I am fascinated by. But I do not think we will see Ayu or Erika raping people or forcing them to throw acid in other peoples faces lol
|
I can see Ayu raping people :x lol
But really... I don't think Ayu ever lost touch with reality to this extent... (I also don't believe she is all made of plastic surgery). I don't really know Erika, but from that interview u linked, she seens to be a very clever girl, someone who knows where she is and what she is dealing with... Thinking about it now, the 00s had a lot of big ball jpop girls... |
^Exactly. Like as many things as go wrong with them, they have never lost touch with reality. They stay somehow grounded you know? Thats what makes AYu so compelling. And I know people will go on for days about plastic surgery debates, but imo, she has not had any except her venners.
|
wow Erika and Ayu at the same project... hmmm this will gain people's attention for sure
|
Aren't the two supposedly friends or something? They did meet at Leslie Kee Super exhibition last year :D
I think it's nice to see that Ayu is emotionally attached to evolution. I always wished the single reached million sales status. |
This is pretty cool.
No need for a new version though, would be pointless using an old classic if it just got remade. I don't think her new vocals suit it at all anyway. Why change perfection? |
Quote:
|
Doesn't care much about the movie and why use evolution instead ask Ayu to make a new song. I just want to see her appearance in movie premier, watch her dress, hair do, shoes, and stuff like that.
|
Erika Sawajiri... Well, this is interesting...but the movie's R15+ (mature audiences?)...
|
that's really cool news!
|
I wonder how the theme will be used.
Like, for instance, will they make the film one of those films where you don't know when it takes place? By using a song from the early 2000's, a manga created in the 90's, and a modern setting, it kind of makes it applicable for all generations. Also, when and how much the song will be used. Only once? Or will it be a recurrent song. If anyone has ever seen Suicide Club/Circle, they use a band's music video throughout the entire film, either in the background or foreground. I wonder if it'll be similar to this. Or if it'll be just at the beginning. (The ending theme is being sung by a different singer, so it won't be used then.) |
What a great news?
But why they dont use ayu's new songs from Party Queen? |

I LOVE Suicide Circle it took me a few watches to really "get it" and get desensitized to the violence, but each viewing is now so much more revealing, such a good film!
I personally could see evolution being used throughout the entire film. I still can't get over how genius this is!! |
If they're going for a certain atmosphere, they might achieve it with this song. I dunno. I don't know a lot about the story.

I just read the manga and Ayu was all I could think about. Some of the statement, visuals, symbols...they're so frequent in what Ayumi says and does. Her music is the perfect choice, though I'm unsure if evolution(lyrically) is the right choice. I wonder if they will take the story from the manga or the storylines that were planned but never realized because of the author's accident...or both...this film would be the perfect opportunity to finish the unfinished story.
|
This film sounds really interesting! I think Erika is a really good actress so hopefully I'll get the chance to see this. Thanks for the interview evolution 7/4 - she came over really well.
It's cool they've chosen evolution though I don't understand why. From reading the description of the film, the lyrics don't really match. A remix or recording would be nice though. Adding evolution to her next single would defiantely be a good idea! mi|kshake~ |
wish we could wish for a remastered version with new arrangements maybe :)
|
Just finished to read the manga. If you don't mind: nudity, cursing and violence it's highly recommended. It's a cruel and bitter sight on model's careers and beauty obsession. Although it was written on '95 it would apply perfectly nowadays imo.
I'm looking forward this movie! Also, Erika Sawajiri is totally suited for Ririko :yes. At first I didn't get why they have chosen evolution as main theme, but after reading the manga I got it. To be honest I don't really want a remastered version. evolution is perfect as it is. |
BTW, the manga is from 2003
|
|
That photo is very Ayu.
And so what if she'd re-record it. It wouldn't destroy the original version. It's not like that one would cease to exist or anything. :rolleyes |
^
you're right, but evolution don't really need to be re-recorded imo. However if they will do it, I wouldn't complain lol. Quote:

ow, maybe I didn't see it. Sorry! btw I used Topaz Clean for made that effect. It's from Topaz Lab a PS filter :yes |
Quote:
|
If they rerecord or arrange it that would totally defeat the purpose of choosing the song in the first place imo
|
Quote:
I really enjoyed her two singles that she released. I don't think they were as generic as she insists, but it's nice to know she's critical about what kind of music she wants to put out. |
I believe the original run of the manga was 1995-1996, but it was compiled into one volume in 2003.
|
WOW SO EPIC!!! X) So this is the kind of promotion they were going for Party Queen, so in 2023 we'll get a high budget movie with PQ as it's soundtrack :3 perfect can't wait!

That actress is incredibly beautiful...!
|
the interview is very interesting...
i gained back a lot of respect to her...but i never agree with her attitude during closed note press conference, because it's just disrespectful to other artist... but i understand the reason, she still young and emotional... I hope her coming back movie will be great, and hopefully Ayu will do something big with it |

It looks more like an Illuminati poster than a porn movie poster lol
This is so random, but amazing :D |
Totally going to see this film as soon as someone subs it.
Erika Sawajiri ftw~ oh, and evolution of course :laugh |
That actress indeed is beautiful!!! :O
The only part of evolution which fits the film is the beginning and the monotone part imo. "sou da ne bokura atarashi" and "genjitsu....". They should mix it like a long monotone part. Or IF she's going to rerecord then she definitely has to add darker lyrics! I don't find the chorus fitting at all, it's too 'cheery' if you ask me. I will definitely see this movie! (BTW thanks for sharing that Manga!) |
I love Erika, despite all the **** media pours on her and she herself creates with her attitude, XD
evolution is a great song, good to use it. it fits the theme Erika is a great actress, looking forward for this adult movie (sex, drugs & rock n roll lol) |
It's interesting they're using Evolution for this, well looking forward to this movie, the story seems interesting! :D
|
Actually, even the melody and arrangement of evolution are "cheery", I never found the lyrics that happy...
It's more like "we were born in a tough time, it's still amazing, but we cry and suffer"-stuff lol |
I'm going to mirror what everyone else is saying and hope she does a new vocal track, and maybe a new instrumental mix using the bell sounds her keyboardists add in during the live shows. :3
|
Yay for Erika!
..wait, what, evolution? Oh cool, Ayu is relevant again. Kind of. Gz! |
Wow the legend rises again XD
|

maybe change the arrangement to something like tour of secret but keep the vocals as it is.

Great song! Great choice!

That's pretty odd :thud

from trailers & promo on the net the film seems really great but definately 18+ and the film to think about while watching. not a simple one, and filmed in an interesting way
is it just that the director is the fan of Ayu? the director seems good, at least they're doing real concept for the movie this time |
