Songs to get me into Utada Hikaru

So, I'm looking for songs that you think will make me a fan of Utada. I like a few of her songs, but others I find just plain weird. So, that's why I'm not asking for a favorite song, it may not be the kind that appeals to a non-fan. For the record, I like singers like Koda Kumi, Kana Nishino and Miliyah Kato, if that helps at all.

Um... that's hard... lol (music is tricky)

I know I like Hikki... but I dont know how much you can say that...
I know...
Final Distance = is AMAZING.
Traveling = good.

I rather enjoyed her singles collection?

but when i think of utada I think of those two songs...
Oh! and simple and clean... but thats disney, english.

Hmm
BTW first 6 songs are 'experimental' pop and sound very nostalgic at some parts.
- colors
- sakura drops
- fight the blues
- beautiful world
- take 5
- passion
- celebrate
- automatic
- in my room
- movin' on without you
- distance

Buy the album DEEP RIVER. Listen to it. If you like it, buy the album ULTRA BLUE. That's all you have to do.

I really can't suggest any of Utada's Japanese Discography for you that I'd think you like based on the kind of music you say you like right now, the fact that you think her music is weird and the fact that you said Kumi Koda. But I'll try anyway with doubt. Maybe "Movin' On Without You", "Wait & See ~Risku~", "Tokyo Nights" and "Kiss & Cry" but I don't know.

You're more likely to find some of her English songs more appealing because those are more closer to Kumi Koda nasty than any of her Japanese songs.

I'd say try "Devil Inside", "The Workout", "You Make Me Want To Be A Man", "Wonder 'Bout", "Let Me Give You My Love", "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - FYI", "On and On", "Dirty Desire" and "Poppin'."

Try the song Heart Station. It's my favorite.

Her music gets weirder the later the album, so I'd suggest just getting Single Collection Vol. 1 and listening through that. It's a solid group of songs, and almost all of them are fantastic. Non-weird songs I'd recommend are Can You Keep A Secret?, Automatic, First Love, and Simple and Clean (not on any of her releases except the American release of her second English album). You'd probably like This Is Love from ULTRA BLUE and Flavor of Life -Ballad Version- from Heart Station too.

To be honest, most of her English songs (except Simple and Clean and maybe Come Back To Me) are pretty off putting on the first few listens, especially if you don't already like her, so I'd avoid those until if and when you actually get into her.

Listen to DEEP RIVER and forever have your life changed. Then stan on over to ULTRA BLUE and HEART STATION. First Love and Distance might also be more of an appeal to your tastes if you like R&B. First Love is an extremely well done R&B album idgaf what any Utada stan says.

The songs that got me into Utada Hikaru were, of course, Hikari/Simple and Clean, Sakura Drops, Tokyo Nights, Easy Breezy (English song), The Workout (English song), and Prisoner of Love. I absolutely love the ULTRA BLUE album but I don't know if it suits your tastes.

Can You Keep a Secret?
Passion
Show Me Love (Not a Dream)
Stay Gold

2001 I first started listening to J-Pop and I heard of two artists Ayu and Hikki. So I listened to Dearest and Final Distance. I felt that Ayus song touched me more. So then and there I downloaded every song she released so far. And then realized Ayu is the one for me. I never connected to Hikkis music like I did with Ayus. But I still like her and think she's very talented and a very good singer. My favourites are the already mentioned Final Distance, Automatic and the complete Heart Station album. (Minus Boku wa Kuma) First Love is also a classic song - but probably not what you're looking for. :)

my favorite album is DEEP RIVER, but i think you would enjoy her first two albums more. i prefer Distance more than First Love. she gets more experimental pop later on. i'm not really into her English material.

that said, Hikki isn't like the artists you've mentioned. she's really not like flashy? (idk if that's the right word, lol). even though she is super popular, she does attract a certain type of audience, imo.

First album are boring, imo. I only like ULTRA BLUE and Heart Station.

This is exactly what I was thinking as well.

I'd also like to add Utada's "This Is Love" and "Making Love" from the ULTRA BLUE album. A couple examples of Utada style pop with good energy.

Download her 3 single collections (yeap, the english one too). If u don't like her after listening to them, u hardly will like her album tracks anyway, as they tend to be weirder

Sandy 5th September 2012 12:38 AM

I'd listen to her Single Collection 2, it might have more songs that appeal to you.

HEART STATION is her best studio album imo, but I don't know, I don't think we share the exact same taste in music :D Give Flavor of Life ~ballad version~, Kiss & Cry and Can't Wait 'Til Christmas a listen :) Might suit you <3

tinka69 10th September 2012 04:56 AM

Deep River. Just listen to the entire album.

emi♡ 10th September 2012 06:11 AM

I think that you might like ULTRA BLUE since it's a mixture of pop, R&B and some cool dance tunes. Other albums that I think are Exodus, This Is The One and of course, DEEP RIVER. Personally I adore Distance the most but it's really R&Bish so I don't know if you like it, but you can try it anyway if you want. :)

I won't really recommend any specific songs because the list would be too long (and others have pretty much recommended the same songs I was going to), but those albums I mentioned would be something that you might like. ^_^
