IMO it's 2.535 million, not 253 million??? Can someone confirm because 253 million seems way too huge to me.

AyuGAME 9th January 2013 01:11 PM

i think it's 2.53 millions...
yay to see ayu on number 3...soon she will be number 2
but if AKB saga continues..looks like she will get back to number 3

"3. 浜崎あゆみ…253.5万枚"
万 means 10 thousand (according to an online translator) so 2.5 million?

SURREAL__RAINBOW 9th January 2013 01:12 PM

I think it should be written as 2.535. With the comma it looks like you're saying that it should be 2 and a half thousand million. :laugh

mizuki-7 9th January 2013 01:36 PM

Sorry XD !! it's because in french we can also write like that ^^

pop groups are instant sellers, even though they suck and use their members like slaves lol.

KarenPang 10th January 2013 04:09 AM

As a fan of ARASHI (let alone Johnny's groups) for the past 5 years , they definitely worked their butt out to get to where they're at now currently & it's not as though they came outta nowhere

ARASHI has been around since 1999 & back then , nobody gave a hoot about them , just like AKB48 but look at where both artistes are at now

With that said , for ayumi to be the only solo artiste listed on Oricon in this list , it's an honour for her , super big time . Just think of how many other solo artistes that want to see his/her name on it but will not get the chance to

Refix 10th January 2013 04:30 AM

I would hardly call it nobody giving a hoot haha.. They were just selling SINGLE platinum status-ish, compared to their current million results.

yeah but they also experienced slump sales when they were still in Pony Canyon & when they transferred to JStorm , things got somewhat better

it's only when Hana Yori Dango came along which slowly push their popularity up bit by bit and when they started hosting back to back variety shows of their own which really escalated their popularity significantly

now buying their concert tickets is a 1 in a million chance as I heard prices for them can go up to 10 million yen per ticket in the black market :tired

Delicious n Bold 10th January 2013 12:53 PM

When I first saw this thread, I was mortified. 253 million DVDs?
I knew that was wrong. DVDs in Japan are a billion dollars each.

Keep getting those sales ayuma!

Well she released waaaay more DVDs for one thing. :). Morning musume as well.
Still though it's a nice accomplishment for both.
Arashi though....,,,wow, no one will be catching that for a while or ever.

I also don't disparage arashi their success, they built very slowly and worked hard for years, they were not an instant success by any means.

truehappiness 12th January 2013 02:49 AM

MoMusu's DVDs count their various Single Vs (basically a DVD version of their single with videos only) so it adds up a lot more than Ayu's usual CDL/tour DVD thing. I mean, COMPLETE CLIP BOX/A 50 SINGLES/A CLIPS/A CLIP BOX probably also helped too in Ayu's case most of those were one time releases.

SunshineSlayer 12th January 2013 03:09 AM

^ Yeah, its hard to even know what would count for MM. Like would the MM in Hawaii (or insert other various locations) DVDs be counted? Hello Project concert dvds? Photobook DVDs etc.

Compared to other artists, Ayu also has quite a few DVDs. Very few artists routinely release 2 concert DVDs per year. Plus she has had several PV collections released (at least 4 off the top of my head?) Plus she did also release DVD singles at the height of her career like MM and those I think sold quite a lot.

AKB also falls in this category so I think sometime soon they will pass both Ayu and MM. I don't follow their sales closely, but I imagine they have to be close.

truehappiness 12th January 2013 03:21 AM

Yeah, but compared to MoMusu's like 30-40+ Single Vs, Ayu has only had like 4 DVD singles total maybe? I recall SURREAL, M, evolution, and vogue~Far away~SEASONS.

Very few artists also have two pretty large concerts a year so it makes sense imo that she would release two. However, I don't know if CDL will continue to be released on its own and may instead be bundled with albums/compilations from now on.

AKB's DVD totals are nowhere near ARASHI's so perhaps they won't really overtake MoMusu or Ayu anytime soon? Maybe if they continue this momentum for the next five+ years.

SunshineSlayer 12th January 2013 03:31 AM

^ I wasn't necassarily comparing Ayu to MM; just saying that both have an abnormally high number of DVD releases which accounts for them being 2 and 3. :) If SMAP, B'z, Utada, Namie even etc., had more releases they would most likely make it higher on the list as well.

AKBs totals are no where near Arashi's, but who's are? AKB most likely will pass Ayu and MM unfortunately; Ayu and MM both deserve it more imo though.

pimenta 12th January 2013 04:15 AM

WOW, Great!! The best solo artist, as expected <3

Hum not necessarily you know now Ayu sells less DVD with 2 releases than Namie, b'z, smap etc... with one release ^^ But Ayu have a lot of DVD at her prime who have passed the 100 /150 K ! But the VHS don't count ? the best selling vidéo of Ayu is a VHS but I don't find the figure ... Anyone know ?

Once again we are talking about Namie. I though people didn't want to talk about her anymore.

Congratulations ayuuuuuu

That's kind of the point I was making. ;) It's the shear number of releases that Ayu has had that puts her at #3 - there are plenty of other artists that sell more, they just release less.

truehappiness 13th January 2013 02:08 AM

And she's probably going to continue to still have CDL and her tours, but at the very least CDL may become something that isn't released without something else bundled with it. (eh, just watch CDL12-13 become some sort of anniversary release hahaha) If you have the material, why not release it? I'd like to know who is #4-10 just to see where they stand DVD sales-wise.

I always liked that she had two relatively different concerts on DVD/Blu-ray for quite some time now. As for like B'z and such, they seem to be releasing their past concerts in a few months on DVD/Blu-ray so we'll see how those do. Looking at ARASHI's performance on the charts, they seem to have had at least two DVD releases a year that sell 500k+... insane.

Oh my god, look at the stats from almost two years ago! (http://www.oricon.co.jp/news/rankmusic/84631/full/)

1. ARASHI 4.014 million
2. Morning Musume 2.288 million
3. Ayumi Hamasaki 2.226 million

And now it's QUITE different for ARASHI.

1. ARASHI 7.057 million
2. Morning Musume 2.740 million
3. Ayumi Hamasaki 2.535 million

I'm kinda wondering where MoMusu's sales came from since I KNOW they sell a lot of different DVDs (single Vs, multiple concert DVDs every year), but they don't sell very many of them so what gives? Did they for some reason also count regular single DVD sales and fanclub graduation DVDs as well?

Luvia 13th January 2013 08:42 AM

its just DVD right?

Arashi in 14 years (I think?) have only 13 DVDs total. It's only the last two years that they have had two releases per year. They just simply SELL....A LOT.

MM's number comes largely from some of their earlier concert dvds and single Vs - they posted some pretty huge numbers back in the day.

yes that's right , ARASHI only released 13 DVDs even though this year's their 14th year in the business

  3. ARASHI “LIVE TOUR Beautiful World” – 572,000 copies (released May 23,2012)
  4. ARASHI “10-11 TOUR“Scene”~君と僕の見ている風景~ DOME+” – 539,000 copies (released June 16, 2011)

It's hard to believe about 10 years ago when they released How's it going? SUMMER CONCERT 2003 , the last updated sales figure for it was 158,399 which's so :dead2 as compared to their current DVD sales figures which's quite madness

I mean the amount from the last year or two of 400k~ DVDs. It's very odd considering that their sales haven't been great DVD wise for the last 5+ years.

mizuki-7 13th January 2013 11:20 AM

Anyone know exactly the sales of each DVD/VHS/BD of Ayu ?

Ahhh, I see. Yeah, that is kind of strange. Although over the last year or two they have had a slight upswing in popularity(due to the current success of idol groups across the board basically).

@KarenPang - Yeah, those first week sales are amazing. The total sales are even more impressive - some DVDs went on to sell over 700,000 copies. It's surprising to me somewhat that AKBs DVDs do not sell anywhere near that well considering that their singles sell millions. Also considering that the main appeal of idol groups are the visuals. It really makes it look like a lot of AKBs huge success with singles comes from all the different gimmicks that come with them. Arashi's DVDs on the other hand sell more than some of their music does!

truehappiness 14th January 2013 06:54 AM

Yeah, they even had a #1 single recently.

However, eight to ten releases that sell 10k (or less) each does not add up to 400k+. Something smells, haha.

C+R+E+AYUMI 23rd January 2013 08:43 AM

yaaay! Anyway the difference from arashi's 1st ranking momusu 2nd is impressing in terms of sales
