ʕ•̫͡•ʔ NEW RELEASE!Utada Hikaru SINGLE COLLECTION VOL.1+2 HDDecember 09, 2014!

ʕ•̫͡•ʔ ABOUT HIKKI
Spoiler:
Utada Hikaru (宇多田ヒカル) is a Japanese pop singer-songwriter under the Emi Music Japan label. Utada is one of Japan's most successful artists of all time. Her debut album First Love is the #1 best selling album in Asian music history with over 7.65 million copies sold in Japan alone. In total she has sold over 38,000,000 million records in Japan, and 3 of her albums are in the Top 10 best-selling albums of all time in Japan (#1, #4, #8), making her one of the most successful and popular singers in J-pop history. Utada is bilingual as she was raised in both New York and Tokyo. She is also known in the west under her English language project name 'Utada', most famous for singing the Kingdom Hearts theme song, "Hikari / Simple And Clean" and the Kingdom Hearts II theme song, "Passion / Sanctuary". Initially, Utada's music had a heavy R&B style to it, but later her music progressed to a more pop / experimental tone. Her distinct R&B sound brought her much attention with her first release in Japan, "Automatic / time will tell". Utada was married to director Kiriya Kazuaki, who directed the movie CASSHERN, but in March 2007 the couple split.

On August 9, 2010, Utada announced plans to go on indefinite hiatus following the release of "Utada Hikaru SINGLE COLLECTION VOL.2", her second compilation album. On November 24, 2010, "Utada Hikaru SINGLE COLLECTION VOL.2" was released. It debuted atop the Oricon charts once again. It has also been anounced that Utada has severed ties with Island Def Jam, who releases her English language works. She has secured a global contract with EMI Music. Upon returning from her hiatus, all her future releases will be under the name Utada Hikaru regardless of the country of release.

Utada Hikaru has been deemed the Most Influential Japanese Artist of the past decade (2000-2010) by Japan Times.

ʕ•̫͡•ʔ NEWS
Spoiler:
Hikki got married on May 24, 2014!
Spoiler:
[2014/02/10] A message to my fans in Italy, and members of the Italian press (and other curious people)

Due to the unexpected intensity of media attention in Italy regarding our upcoming marriage, please allow my fiancé and I to express some of our feelings in our own words.

A message to my fans in Italy, and members of the Italian press (and other curious people)

I never thought that the news of my marriage with an Italian guy "normale" would be met with so much excitement in Italy.

To me, my fiance is just "my man" and for him I am just "his woman." Many journalists have been asking how we met. The truth is quite boring---we met through a mutual friend. He is younger than me but in some ways more mature. I was drawn to his courage and his values regarding family, friends, work, life, love---and when I met his family, I saw where it all comes from.

I am touched and excited by the warm reception of so many people in Italy… but I must implore you to respect the privacy of my fiance and his family. Being the target of public attention can be very stressful and scary, and it would sadden me greatly to see my new family under duress or in danger because of me.

I heard rumors about some fans possibly organizing a bus tour to the location of our wedding. I have always been grateful for the support of my fans who remain loyal to me, and it is truly amazing to feel the excitement you share with me, and so it pains me to have to say this, but please understand that a wedding is not a show. I hope we can meet one day under more appropriate circumstances.

We would like to share our wedding photos with you all. I hope this will help to alleviate any potential chaos on the day of the wedding.

Thank you.

Hikaru Utada

--------------------------------------

Hello Everybody!

As you probably already know, I am Hikaru’s fiancé and I work as a bartender in a London hotel.

It’s a decent job that gives me a decent life, just like anybody else. I come from a modest family background: honest folk, loved and respected by the people in my home town and who taught me what honesty, love, sacrifice and work all mean. They never let me want for anything and above all, showed me how to face life with optimism and courage.

I guess it must seem strange to think that a suburban guy like me, doing a normal job, gets together with a superstar like Hikaru. Indeed, when it all started, even I found it difficult to believe.

Well our roads crossed and as time went by we got to know each other and found that we had loads of things in common, among which, and most relevant, our deep and reciprocal love.
To be honest, when I left my beloved home town in Puglia in an attempt to create a future in London, I never imagined that I would be where I am today, but if the Lord has made this decision, so be it. I trust in Him.

I introduce myself to you, fans and press, with these few words, and especially to all Italians, the people I am so proud of, and I ask you all to offer support and respect to the lady who is to be my future wife, also to Mr. Teruzane who will become my second dad and, last but not least, to my family.

Thank you all for your understanding.

With my very best wishes

Francesco

Jolin is not on the album tbh

ahtka-chan 11th November 2014 02:17 AM

And the tracklist hasn't been released yet

chocopockymaster 11th November 2014 02:29 AM

Where did that tracklist come from? Jolin, JUJU, and ayaka aren't on the album.

Pieces_of_SEVEN 11th November 2014 02:52 AM

It's just people speculating. Thank God they're wrong. Lol

chocopockymaster 11th November 2014 02:54 AM

And I see no one's mentioned the limited edition Utada Hikaru SINGLE COLLECTION VOL.1+2 HD collector's edition USB thingy. It's also being released December 9th for the cool, cool price of ¥21,600. It doesn't say how many pieces are being produced...but probably somewhere under 9,999.

My body is READY for this cover album oh my god I'm crying

pheonixflame15 11th November 2014 03:22 AM

I hope all the songs are different so it's not full of first loves and automatics

chocopockymaster 11th November 2014 03:37 AM

Promo descriptions for the album basically say that 13 artists are doing 13 reinterpretations (not sure how you'd phrase that) so I think it's safe to say each song will be unique.

Pieces_of_SEVEN 11th November 2014 04:58 AM

Sign me up for that USB!

Delicious n Bold 11th November 2014 05:39 AM

that USB is cute but who has that kind of money to burn?
And I swear if they ruin first love...

Diva_br 11th November 2014 05:51 AM

I think the Miliyah's cover it will be Automatic, and for Shiina, Traveling

lol

thinkingoutloud89 11th November 2014 07:33 PM

There is no cover yet as far as I know. All images so far are from the special website and are collaboration with some artist/designers (like the original cover for the SCVII which they obviously scrapped and the Kingdom hearts hommage)

I heard the same thing.
I saw it and thought it looked a bit strange with the chandeliers. The backdrop was pretty though.

Maemi 11th November 2014 09:17 PM

what original cover?

Pieces_of_SEVEN 19th November 2014 05:08 PM

OK so there was this really inappropriate parody video of wait and see a few years ago that someone made. It was on youtube and it had english subs of fake lyrics that sounded like what she was saying.

I'm so sad that I can't find it. Has anyone else seen it or know where I can watch it?

CoriKaru 19th November 2014 07:51 PM

Ayumi fans are going HAAAAM on Utada in their part of the forum. Why? lol

Join ayumi and worship the queen.

Covers don't excite me in general and the only artist I really am a fan of on that list is Shiina Ringo, so it will come down to the songs they choose.

orangeakira 28th November 2014 09:53 PM

I think Jasmine should have been on this album. In the beginning I could really hear the utada influence in her music, and Jasmine said she was a huge influence to her. I could definitely see her putting her own spin on Sakura Drops, Flavor of life, or Prisoner of love. Actually since Jasmine's music is a bit hip-hop/R&B-ish, i could see her doing something from earlier on in Utada's career like Sunglass or Hayatochiri.

you don't have to compare then, but listen to them as new songs. which is hard. i know.

visionfactory 2nd December 2014 07:16 PM

^lol, they aren't new songs don't treat them as new song they are just bad covers

OMG. Shiina's Letters sounds awesome! Can't wait to hear Movin' on without you!!

bluegie 2nd December 2014 07:40 PM

SAKURAドロップス is such a surprise. I dunno if I like it or not, but he totally changed the mood of the song ;P.
Letters definitely has the ringo feeling inserted. Somehow its arrangement is a bit similar to SAKURAドロップス (the bossa mix or whatever it's called).
FINAL DISTANCE and Keep Tryin'... hmmn no comment.

orangeakira 2nd December 2014 07:42 PM

The cover of Sakura Drops sounds like the original version of Letters. Weird.

Zahara 3rd December 2014 12:26 AM

I'm eager to hear Final Distance.

Pieces_of_SEVEN 3rd December 2014 12:59 AM

So RedOne did movin on without you for ayu? This has the potential to be spectacular

emi♡ 3rd December 2014 01:21 AM

Sakura drops could not even be any more Japanese than this wow :laugh It's got all their "this is so novel" with a traditional voice concept going on. lulz. Culture so lulzy.

Keep Trying is cool. Fun, very very mellow arrangement. Vocals are not for me, but they remind me a lot of the indie bands I try out every now and then.

Letters is better than hikki's version lol

And yeah, remember that these are supposed to be like hikki songs remade into the style of these artists. It's traditional to do tribute albums that way.

You're not supposed to just make a cover. Anyone can make a cover or a remix. The special thing is the artists that are participating, and the idea that they're paying tribute to hikki by using her songs. The songs are supposed to sound like them lol

Anyway. These are good so far. They're exactly what they should be.

oh damn this Final Distance. <3 Versions better than the originals. Officially excited af

It's not japanese, it's latin music, specifically salsa, it was done by a latin orchestra

NintendoHTF1242 3rd December 2014 04:24 AM

Where are these previews at??

Pieces_of_SEVEN 3rd December 2014 04:33 AM

ITunes, but they're not all available yet.

lulz.

Yes, the *style* is latin, but it's still ridiculously Japanese.

Japanese people since forever have long loved taking musical styles, especially really "big" styles like this one, with loud instruments and upbeat tempos, and putting their own traditional vocals with them. Down to the way he says every word.

It creates a dissonance that is very culturally, Japanese. It goes back to the 60s, and maybe even before.

bluegie 3rd December 2014 06:41 AM

^ Actually you're right. When I heard the preview I got a feeling of the old Japanese style with that latino vibe, especially when sung by an old artist. His voice fits the arrangement really well.

I disagree that Letters is better than the original version tho, emi. The original one is a masterpiece with one of the best arrangements hikki ever had. I can imagine hikki sitting at the beach reading those heart breaking letters. For ringo... well she makes me think that she's holding a bloody knife while reading them, and it really fits her image lol.

Mmm yes, that is what I love about letters. I always enjoy the environment sings create and that one very perfectly creates this ideal, relaxing beach, similar to the ones back home for me. That arrangement with that composition will forever be love. I do love Shiina's take though too it's so her and wonderfully so.

I also think that final distance is very beautifully arranged and creates this sad mystical world. That is lost in AI's version obviously because it's not hikki anymore. It sounds like a standard r&b ballad or something. And those have to be really outstanding to impress me or just make me want to listen, so I'm not really a fan because nothing about it just clicks with me. It's well done I guess for her though and suits AI best. You can miss me with that though.

I like the Sakura Drops cover....I can vibe with it somehow. Same with Keep Tryin. So I'm excited for the rest.

tsumekaze_ 3rd December 2014 01:55 PM

I hate the sakura drops one ç-ç

Zeke. 3rd December 2014 02:42 PM

The vocalist on letters is just horrid. Why would anyone subject themselves to that? Forgive me cause I couldn't really tell but if the third is Sakura drops then that also is a bomb - too bizarre for me.

Excuse you, that is the divine goddess Shiina Ringo.

Klauser_Bateson 3rd December 2014 03:14 PM

I totally agree with Zeke on that Letters cover, sounds horrible. I actually liked Salsa Drops a lot more.

The only preview I liked a lot was AI's version of FINAL DISTANCE, tbqh.

Pieces_of_SEVEN 3rd December 2014 04:38 PM

totally agree about letters. atrocious.

terra 3rd December 2014 05:25 PM

I'm new on listening to Shiina Ringo, her cover is nice but I wanna ask a question for those who has been listening to her for a time. Is her high pitch voice always sounds like that? Because I love her deeper voice like when she did the chorus or at 1:05 for Letters that's really good imo.

Giving me asfxx ayu teas.

amorphose 3rd December 2014 05:56 PM

Did anyone download the full version of Letters? *bats eyelashes* I think its better than the original!

visionfactory 3rd December 2014 06:08 PM

^I preffer original, Shiina's tracks are always so noisy

Shiina Ringo sings half of the song with an annoying voice then she change to a normal voice which is very similar to Utada's

R_Hikki 3rd December 2014 06:20 PM

Listening to those four previews just now was what I imagine a satanic ritual would be like.

"Letters" was more tolerable than I expected but I have high respects for Utada's original arrangement because it's absolutely one of her best. "Keep Tryin'" was pretty cute, "Sakura Drops" was unreal and "FINAL DISTANCE" was just ok... But overall, this is thoroughly entertaining.

NintendoHTF1242 3rd December 2014 10:09 PM

Honestly, to appreciate Shiina's voice you have to listen to a few songs in her discography. I thought her cover was really emotional and well-done.

Keep Tryin' is cute but it's nothing special.

SAKURA Drops holy shit LMFAO! I actually kind of like it.

I was pretty terrified to hear AI's cover of FINAL DISTANCE cause I stan for that song, but she did work. I like it.

axmish87 3rd December 2014 10:27 PM

SAKURA Drops is my JAM
Sooo catchy i looooove it <3

bluegie 3rd December 2014 11:08 PM

Wow quite a few people hating ringo's voice lol. tbh though that is her signature, high pitch with the twist of "R". Even tho I dun listen to her whole discography, she has really good songs like Honnou, Gibusu, Ringo no Uta, Kabukichou no Joou, etc. I think she did a really good job on letters, as she managed to transform the song to "herself" rather than just covering it.

Yeah, I think AI's FD kinda lost the touch as well. I think her voice is beautiful, but maybe the background story of the song is lost in this cover. Without that the song becomes quite plain.

I just listened to the youtube version SAKURA drops, the opening music was a wow to me lol. The arrangement blends extremely well with Yosui Inoue's old style vocal. I dunno but I'm kinda stuck to old style sometimes, so his version, while may not on par with hikki (yeah I'm biased towards her), is very very good :D.

ahtka-chan 3rd December 2014 11:46 PM

I really loved Letters and SAKURA Drops.

Didn't like AI's cover, her voice is just so... not my cup of tea.

Haven't listened to Keep Tryin' yet, but I'm so happy that First Love didn't make it. I love it's lyrics but I think it's a pretty flat song.

The first time I actually listened to Shiina was Kalk Samen Kuri no Hana. I did not know what to expect LOL but I really do like her singing style; but there is no denying that her voice isn't for everyone. I do like how you said Letters became more of her song rather than a cover. That's an interesting perspective.

JackieRos 4th December 2014 01:30 AM

I love shiina ringo but I didn't like her rendition of letters.
Letters is my favorite song of Hikki so I think Shiina just ruined it.

Zahara 4th December 2014 05:13 AM

I loved AI's cover. It sounded a bit more like gospel music.

koumori 4th December 2014 06:50 AM

I've liked all the ones posted so far, they have been nice surprises. Looking forward to the rest of the album.

Polyrhythm 4th December 2014 07:02 AM

Oh fuck no....:shakehead

Pieces_of_SEVEN 4th December 2014 04:31 PM

I'm not even sorry...but AI blew hikki's out of the fucking water...

emi♡ 4th December 2014 04:40 PM

I've always admired Shiina Ringo, she's amazing. But I've never been able to listen to her because of her vocals. It's her thing, and it's whatever. I was actually surprised that her vocals weren't as annoying in Letters lol

As I said, these aren't really supposed to just be covers lol They're supposed to be more like personal renditions.

@bluegie: I'm not really a big, big fan of hikki's early arrangements. A lot of them are really basic and dated for me, even if they're somewhat innovative, or were for their time. I just prefer a modern sound.

lol even with Final Distance. I always preferred the piano arrangement to the original. I do think the "sadness" is sort of lost....but I think that makes it interesting.

Also happy First Love isn't here. fml I'm tired of that damn song.

amorphose 4th December 2014 06:20 PM

The range of opinions is baffling me. I can't imagine how varied the reception of Ayu's cover will be. lol

AHS will probably implode, lmao.

Delicious n Bold 4th December 2014 06:44 PM

It'll implode while utada is STILL MIA. ugh
looking forward to ayu's cover though. i mean if you cover 90s jpop trash then you really have to put in effort to fuck up. and ayu's been on that 90s jpop trash train before so i think her choice is right at home.

amorphose 4th December 2014 07:59 PM

Movin' on without you is not trash! :O lol

Surreal17 4th December 2014 10:52 PM

You guys made me curious about the songs! Especially about Shiina's one!! Where can I download the tracks?

Violently Happy 5th December 2014 01:31 AM

Don't like the previews except for AI's version of FINAL DISTANCE. I love Shiina Ringo's unique voice, but I didn't like the arrangement. Sakura Drops was just O_O Keep Tryin' had very weak airy vocals which made me dislike it. I however do not think AI's cover is better than Utada's. I also find that AI's voice is not for every person as some people might find it to deep. My mom and sister thought she was a guy when they first heard her, and they felt her vocals were a bit harsh.
